New headcanon that Atsushi isn't actually a fan of his birthdays. Especially right after he leaves the orphanage. I feel like on his b-days there things would get extra bad. The only good thing is that the other kids would avoid him instead of joining in on the harassment from the staff, and even then they'd avoid him like the plague, giving him glances that screamed they were disgusted and scared of him. The staff would double down instead. Because of this Atsushi probably didn't mention his birthday to anyone, and was hesitant about it when any of the other ADA members asked. Ranpo ofc knew, and the first time Atsushis b-day passed Atsushi walked in to see a piece of candy from Ranpos stash on his desk. Now everyone knows when it is because of that, but the most they do is take a bit of the workload off of him (AKA get Dazai to do his own work, which he doesn't argue against aside from some complaining that day), and put something on his desk, because they know celebrations make him uncomfortable.

I know I've talked about this before but thinking about Atsushi with tiger traits. Thinking about his eyes glowing at night if any light hits them and night vision. Enhanced hearing that causes a lot of sensory overload, especially during storms. Slightly hissing that just sounds like air leaving his mouth if he gets extremely startled, for example, someone waking him up from a nightmare. But it was something he would get punished for at the orphanage so it only makes anxiety worse.

I read that cats (including tigers) take slower blinks/close their eyes longer around people they trust. I dunno I was just thinking it'd be really funny if Atsushi started taking some slow ass blinks around Akutagawa and he was like "Did he sleep enough??" the whole time.

No thoughts, just Atsushi having tiger instincts. Atsushi having a special pillow he hides in his futon just for kneading. He hides the pillow because he was shamed for his tiger instincts at the orphanage, but as he opens up to the ADA more, different members get to see his more suppressed instincts (they think its the cutest thing ever). Dazai is the first to discover the pillow and Atsushi gets super scared before Dazai reassures him that its okay and that he thinks its adorable. This is the first time Atsushi has ever been allowed to express his tiger instincts, and in happiness, he rubs his cheek against Dazai. Dazai is shocked and Atsushi is too after disengaging with the cheek rub but Dazai quickly regains his composure and hugs Atsushi back, while rubbing his cheek. Atsushi is incredibly overjoyed about Dazai (his family...!!) scenting him and expressing his love for Atsushi that he starts chuffing too. Dazai screams

so much atsushi slander. how do i put into words that his character is so refreshing. that his reactions aren't weak for the situations he was put into and what prep he was given, but endearing to me because he's always trying his best. not in a 'he just messed up and is trying his best sort of way' but in a 'he's experienced so much cruelty that still affects him to this day, but he's still trying his best.' that he hates himself sometimes and can't brute force a solution to the problems he faces. he's just. so realistic.

What do you think would happen if Atsushi tried catnip

Not a question I was expecting to get, but sure! Let's brainstorm.

It would definitely start with confusion—him being cautious when he gets a whiff of something interesting. He smells it before he sees it. But when he finally finds it, he takes it into his hand and sniffs it. Atsushi has no idea what it is, but it smells... interesting.

Then, of course, in a moment, it finally kicks in. He starts to feel relaxed, maybe even a little bit loopy. Meanwhile, Dazai, being who he is, takes full advantage of Atsushi’s state, messing with the younger. Kunikida is a bit concerned but doesn’t insert himself into whatever the heck is happening.

Soon after, the playful side kicks in. He could even start rolling around on the floor, acting more cat-like—on zoomies. He might try to steal Ranpo’s snacks. He better not run into Akutagawa, or he’ll get stabbed. He would definitely knock stuff over, and his ability might go a bit out of control—transforming parts of himself before it fades again. Naomi probably recorded all of this.

After that? Sleepy time. He might curl up somewhere in a sunspot, completely blissed out. Once he snaps out of it, he’s straight-up horrified. He’ll be begging for the videos to be deleted. He won’t be able to handle it.
