Weary are the Shoulders that Bare the Crown - An Avatrice Priory of the Orange Tree AU

Hey everyone! I’m back with my first fanction in a while! This is a Priory of the Orange Tree AU where Ava is a Queen and Beatrice the protector sent from the Priory to keep her safe. Spoilers of the book! Here’s an extract from the first chapter and if you want to read more, the link it at the end!

Beatrice had read about those lavender fields, how they surrounded the city of Carscaro and filled the air with their sweet, powerful scent. The books had been true though they had undervalued the sight. From the road leading into the city, the rows of waist-high purple bushes opened like fans, and colored the horizon. The city stood among them, tall and proud, nestled against hard mountains. Camilla had also told her about Carscaro, though she had only visited the city once. She had told her to watch out for crowded spaces, where one was quite likely to lose their purse before they could spend a single coin. Beatrice had no money to spend. She had come to the city on foot, dressed as a pilgrim, the blades she carried hidden beneath her heavy cloak.

She entered the city, like everyone else, through the main gate, dodging between wine carts and noblemen carriages. She kept her gaze ahead, even as she encountered soldiers. She could feel them staring at her. She wondered, still, after weeks on a boat, why Mother Superion had sent her. She stood out in a crowd even as she didn't mean too. Easterners in the West remained a rarity, even as trade routes had opened significantly in the past few decades. Camilla may have less experience, but she would have fit in her native home far better than Beatrice ever could.

Following the instructions she had been given, she made her way to a tavern called The Dragonsbane. She brushed past the zealots preaching at the corner of the establishment and entered. It was the middle of the afternoon, and the tavern was quite empty, except for a few regulars already on their bar stools. She had no doubt it would change soon enough. Within, the smell of lavender had been replaced by that of wine, as if the walls had soaked in it. It made her nose itch.

She found her query easily enough, for their was only one man dressed in fine courtier silks in this small establishment. She sat in the chair opposite him. He held an untouched glass in his hand, swirling the Bordeaux liquid against the glass but never bringing it to his lips.

“I told Mother Superion that there was no need to send someone,” he said as she sat, keeping his voice low. “The killer has been apprehended, we will have the name of his employer soon enough.”

“This is just a precaution, Father Vincent. I won't intervene unless another attempt is made on her life.”

Setback - a Wolfwren fanfiction

A/N: Hello everyone! I just posted the first chapter of my bew multi-chapter story. It's a cooking AU. Here is an extract and if you want to read the whole chapter, the link will be at the end!

“Hello?” a voice came from the front.

Sabine brushed her mouth with her hands, then her hands on her jeans. She left her sandwich aside and picked up her notebook. She didn’t know what to expect when she stepped out of the kitchen. Certainly not a woman her age, with shoulder-length hair. The bottom was dyed platinum blond but she hadn’t bothered dying them again, allowing her natural dark brown to take over. Her green-blue eyes looked over Sabine as she walked around the counter and came up to her to shake her hand.

“You must be Shin Hati. I’m Sabine Wren.”

Shin’s handshake was firm.

“How long has this bar been in your family?” Shin asked.

“Oh, just… my parents started it and I’m hoping to continue it.”

Sabine pursed her lips. Perhaps opening with how close to ruin this place was wasn’t the right way to begin the interview. She motioned for the nearest table.

“Please, sit.”

They sat opposite each other and Sabine flipped through her notebook until she found the right page. She had written down a few questions and what little information she thought Shin would need.

“I was really surprised when I saw your email. I mean, you’re like an actual cook.”

Shin frowned.

“Aren’t you looking for a cook?”

“Yeah, but I mean, I thought I would get applications from fast food people, not Calodan. Why the change of career?”

Shin seemed to chew her words before she spoke them, a small wrinkle between her eyebrows as she focused.

“The way I see it, it isn’t a change of career. I would still be cooking, right?”

“Oh yeah, absolutely. I’m looking for someone to replace my friend as soon as possible. I’m not firing him. He isn’t quitting either. His help was always temporary and he got the job he wanted, so…”

Sabine trailed off. She really wanted Shin to take the position. Wren Stronghold had a reputation for being a good bar, but outside of regulars these days, they didn’t get a lot of customers. She figured if anything could turn that around, it was good food.

Here I Am, Next to You (You Pull at My Seams) - An Avatrice and MaryShannon fanfiction

Hey everyone! Here’s an extract from my new summer romance fic, featuring in equal measure Avatrice and MaryShannon! If you like what you read, the link to the full chapter will be at the end!

On the other side of the pool, Ava was paddling away from the shallow part. She ignored the pain in her limbs and pressed on, all the while Mary was calling from the side of the pool.

“Ava, come back on this side. Don't you want to learn how to swim properly, rather than... whatever you're doing?”

Ava shrugged off her comments.

“I'm fine,” she shouted back.

She was in the middle of the pool now, where the ground was so deep that she couldn't feel it even with the tip of her toes. She was paddling her arms and legs as fast as she could to keep her head above the water. On the side of the pool, a young woman in a black swimming suit stepped up to the diving board. She had long, strong legs. Her hair was hidden beneath a black swimming cap, though a few small one still peaked out, plastered on the nape of her neck. Droplets of water had collected in the hollow of her throat, now running over to the edge of her swimsuit.

Ava forgot to paddle. She stared. It lasted only long enough that she felt herself sinking beneath the water. Panic rose in her chest and she kicked the water hard. She couldn't calm down. Every kick of her legs only seem to drag her further under the water. She tried calling for help, but water filled her mouth and smothered her voice.

She didn't hear the splash, only felt someone grabbing her and pulling her to the surface. She continued to struggle, but her rescuer was strong.

“You're okay,” the voice of a young woman told her. “You're okay.”

Ava finally snapped out of her panic. She was being pulled toward the ladder, held firmly above the water. Once she could finally grab the ladder to keep herself from drowning, she pulled away from her savior. Her heart sputtered in her chest when she realized it was the girl from the diving board.

“I'm...”

Ava wasn't sure what she was trying to say. They stood so close to one another that she could see the freckles on the other girl's face. I'm grateful? I'm Ava?

“I'm dead,” she thought and said at the same time, because she had to be.

The girl frowned.

“No, I... I pulled you out,” she replied with confusion.

“Yeah, no, obviously. I'm not dead, dead. I'm just... I'm Ava.”

Before the other girl could introduce herself, Mary arrived just in time to drag Ava out of the pool.

“I told you to stay in the shallow part. I warned you, didn't I?”

Ava rolled her eyes and exited the pool. Mary threw her towel at her and Ava brushed the chlorine water out of her eyes.

“I was fine. I did it on purpose again.”

Then, she saw her rescuer was climbing after her, and giving her strange look, and Ava was quick to respond.

“I mean I didn't do it on purpose to scare anyone. I had everything under control, totally.”

“That's the stupidest thing you've ever said,” Mary replied, earning herself a glare.

A moment later, another woman joined them. She wasn't wearing a swimsuit, but shorts and a tank top, her long brown hair held in a ponytail.

“Everything alright?” she asked.

“I'm sorry, Miss Masters,” Ava's rescuer said. “I thought she was drowning, I...”

“You did good, don't worry.”

“I'm sorry about that,” Mary intervened. “Ava doesn't know when a joke has gone too far.”

“It's fine. Better safe than sorry.”

“I just got tired all of a sudden is all,” Ava tried to defend herself against Mary's glare without passing for a complete loser in front of the cute girl.

This is the Hour of Lead - a Star Wars fanfiction

A/N: Hello everyone! Here's a little bonus story. It's pretty short, and it's not Wolfwren but it is a character study of Bo-Katan and Sabine after the Great Purge of Mandalore. Here is the beginning and if you want to read the whole story, the link will be at the end.

Another ship landed outside of Kryze castle. Bo-Katan felt its weight as if it had landed on her shoulders. Her first thought was that more survivors had made it out of Mandalore. She should feel relieved, but she only felt more guilty. It was venomous in her chest, and amplified with every oblique glance she was given as she carried bandages and blankets through the crowd of survivors. But upon looking at the ship closely, she recognized that it wasn’t one of their own. It was the Phantom.

She walked through the improvised camp and met up with Axe near where the ship had landed.

“Who is it?” Axe asked, on edge.

Bo placed a hand on his shoulder, a silent order to move his hand away from his blaster. Although she hadn’t received any message, she had a feeling she knew exactly who had joined them.

“She’s one of ours,” she told him.

The ramp opened and Sabine Wren stepped out. Her helmet was on and Bo couldn’t see her face. A surge of emotion stifled her lungs. She had no idea what was going on through the young Mandalorian’s head. Sabine stopped at the bottom of the ramp, her visor turned toward Bo-Katan. The former leader straightened her back and took a step toward the younger woman.

“Sabine…”

A blaster shot singed the grass at her feet.

Kiss the Hills for me, just once (then - I am ready to go) - A MaryShannon fic

A/N: Hey everyone! Here’s the beginning of my new short and bittersweet fic! It’s Mary and Shannon, it’s canon compliant, and it’s their last evening together... If you want to read the whole story the link is at the end!

Shannon was ten when she first entered a confessional booth, in preparation for her first communion. She had no great sin to confess but a great many questions about God and Jesus which her local priest, in his benevolent patience, was kind enough to answer as best as he could. When she asked him who he spoke to when he had to confess something, the voice on the other side of the screen had come as chuckle:

"Well, I speak to God quite often. I know that He will always be here to listen. But when I do need advice, I seek out one of my fellow priests."

Some fifteen years later, Shannon still thought about that conversation, as she finally came to empathise with the older man. Though she prayed often for guidance, she always seeked out Mary for advice. Which made it all the stranger when Shannon began to keep things to herself. Mother Superion could tell. The other sister warriors could tell. And most of all, Mary could tell.

She had tried all she could think of to breach the subject. Talking about it in public hadn't worked. Talking about it in private had made the Warrior Nun clam up even more. So Mary had given up, which was quite unlike her. Even Lilith had teased her about it. Mary had glared at her and explained that Shannon would talk once she was ready. She truly hoped it would be tonight.

For a few years now, they'd started a routine on every Thursday night. If they weren't out in the field, then the two of them disappeared on Mary's motorcycle for a few hours. All sorts of rumors had started swirling up from their little escapade. Some of the sisters thought they were wandering the streets, beating up bad guys like two vigilantes. Others thought they rented a motel room – or, more luxuriously a hotel room, or better yet they had their own small apartment – where they could have really hot and loud sex away from the convent. Mary couldn't blame the sisters for all these stupid rumors. She and Shannon were so tight-lipped about what they did that she understood their curiosity. But this was their special thing, a Mary and Shannon alone thing, and neither would ever reveal what they were up to.

That evening, as Mary leaned against her motorcycle, holding her helmet in her hands, she almost thought Shannon wasn't going to come. It wasn't like they had a set time when they should leave, but they never met more than a couple of minutes apart, as if they could sense the other's eagerness to leave. She checked her phone again for the time. Footsteps echoed on the pavement. She looked up and spotted Shannon coming toward her at a hurried pace.

"I was beginning to think you'd stood me up," Mary shouted at her, partly as a joke and partly to her release her own nervousness.

"I'm sorry. I was with Father Vincent and Mother Superion, putting the final touches on tomorrow's mission."

Mary was quick to brush the subject of the next day's mission aside. This was their special night, which meant no work-related talk.

"I'll forgive you only if we leave in the next minute and a half."

Mando'a Lesson - A Wolfwren fanfiction

A/N: Hello everyone! This is the sequel to my halloween High School AU that a lot of you enjoyed! You will find the beginning of the story below but if you want to read the whole thing, the link will be at the end!

Shin unlocked her front door like a thief. She passed her head through and listened to the quiet home, waiting for Baylan’s calm strong voice to ask her if she was back from school. But he never spoke, because he wasn’t home yet. She had chosen this day specifically because Baylan worked later than usual. Once she was sure of it, she let Sabine in and locked the door behind them.

“This way,” she told her as she hurried up the stairs without giving Sabine a moment to look around the entrance hall or the living room.

Upstairs, she snuck Sabine into her bedroom. Her girlfriend paused on the threshold, taking in the room. The walls were that most neutral shade of gray. Shelves heavy with trophies hung on the walls, leaving little to no space for posters. A single one hung over her desk, an ad for a fight between Obi-Wan Kenobi and Darth Maul. The room was clean without so much as a straight piece of clothing on the floor. Sabine took off her orange leather jacket, sat on the desk chair and pivoted it to face the room.

“I could help you repaint your room, if you’d like.”

Shin rolled her eyes and sat at the foot of her bed. She set her school backpack beside her and opened it.

“Help me pass Mando’a first, we can talk about repainting my room later.”

She pulled out her notebook and flipped through it. Her brain was completely phobic to Mando’a. She had been studying it for years at school, yet she could barely remember the minimum. And she had put it off for so long, focusing on her strongest subjects and her competitions that, now that she was actually likely to fail, the private lesson was an emergency. Lucky for her, her new girlfriend was fluent in Mando’a.

Paradise by the Dashboard Light - A RubyxChristina fanfiction

A/N: Hey guys! This is an extract from my new Ruby/Christina story, it’s a high school AU in which Leti sees Ruby disappear in a mysterious silver car and decides to investigate who the car belongs to. It’s just a lot of fun. If you’re interested, the link to the full story is at the end!

Leti left school at four, and her desire for ice cream still hadn't subsided. She decided to make a stop by the ice cream parlor on her own. It was a sunny and warm day, probably one of the last few before fall settled over Chicago. It was now or never. She took a turn to the left instead of the right, forgoing the bus, and made her way toward the ice cream parlor.

She was halfway there when she noticed someone walking ahead of her. She had absolutely no doubt that it was Ruby. She recognized her outfit, the strap of her bag passing over her shoulder, and her walk. She had headphones on, so even if Leti tried to call her, she wouldn't respond. Leti wondered where her older sister was going. The study groups usually met at the school's library. Maybe she was going to the public library, but that wasn't the way to the library either. Leti thought it would be funny if they ended up one behind the other at the ice cream parlor. Maybe she could ask her then.

However, Ruby took a turn to the right, away from the ice cream parlor. Leti frowned again. She stopped at the red light where Ruby had crossed and watched her sister walk toward the nearby park. Leti couldn't help but wonder what her sister was up to. It wasn't like Ruby to lie to her or have secrets. When the light turned green again, Leti hurried after her sister.

She kept her distance, making sure that Ruby wouldn't notice her. Ruby was indeed going to the park, but she didn't walk in, instead, she made her way around it. There was a car parked beside the sidewalk. It was an old-looking silver car, with dark windows. It was impossible to tell who or if someone was inside. Ruby stopped by the car and knocked on the window. The door opened. Ruby slid inside, and Leti was very confused. Ruby was seating in the driver's seat, but shortly after she'd stepped in, the car drove away. Ruby didn't know how to drive. Marvin had tried to teach her but after she'd accidentally crashed his old pickup, they'd both given up. So Ruby couldn't be driving.

Leti watched the silver car disappear at a corner and drive away. She remained on the sidewalk for a moment, her brain full of questions. Ruby had lied, at least she was certain of that. But why? Who did this car belong to? Certainly, someone rich, to own such a luxurious looking vehicle. Leti pulled her phone out and called Ruby. She wanted to know the truth, and know why her sister had lied to her.

"What?" Ruby said as she picked up.

Leti couldn't find her words. What was she supposed to say? That she'd accidentally followed Ruby and seen her setting into a stranger's car? An expensive car at that?

"Leti? What's going on?"

Leti swallowed, and with the only voice she could find, she asked:

"Are you at your study group yet?"

"Yeah, we're kind of busy."

A cold bolt of betrayal struck Leti then.

"It's... it's not important. It can wait. See you later."

"Later."

Ruby hung up, and Leti lowered her phone. She couldn't believe Ruby had lied to her again. She didn't even want to get ice cream anymore. Instead, she made her way back home, deep in thoughts. Why would Ruby lie to her? Who was the man – it had to be a man, only men had nice expensive cars like this one – who'd picked her up? Could he be her boyfriend? She thought Ruby knew she could tell her if she had a secret boyfriend. They were sisters, it had to mean something.

Wolfwren headcanon that I don't know how to turn into a fanfiction:

Shin and Sabine are playing sabacc. Every round they lose, they have to take off a piece of clothing (like strip poker basically). First one naked loses.

Sabine thought she was going to win if she wore her armor.

Shin spent her entire childhood and teenage years around mercenaries, pilots, smugglers and the like. She is a beast at sabacc.

By the time Sabine is naked with only her helmet on, she finally admits defeat.
