ROTTMNT Character Fight Style Analysis - Part 1: Leonardo

Eeeeyyyy it's finally here. This is my analysis of each character's fight style and role post that I teased about a week ago. This turned out to be a hell of a thing, so this will be split into many posts focusing on each character since I have quite a bit to say (and I think Tumblr might break if I put it all into one post). I plan to release one a day, but we'll see how it works out with school.

[Part 2: Raph] [Part 3: Mikey] [Part 4: Donnie] [Part 5: April]

~-~-~

If there's one thing Rise is known for, it is the show's stellar action animation - it's the reason most people started the show to begin with. The visuals are so strong in these scenes, in fact, that Rise could have easily gotten away with having pointless fights each episode (if the budget allowed that) and still be regarded as a fairly decent show. However, Rise doesn't do that, instead chooses to give its action scenes depth by putting thought into the personality of each character and implementing that into how each of them fights, showing the growth of the protagonists over the course of the show.

After rewatching the show multiple times (seriously, so many times) I began to notice patterns in many of the show's big fights, particularly in how the turtles and April fight and how they cooperate with each other as a team.

I thought it might be fun to categorize and examine how Leo, Raph, Mikey, Donnie, and April fight by breaking it down into their unique fighting styles, their roles and strengths in battle, how they apply those roles, and how all of these demonstrate different parts of their character.

BTW: There's a reason for the order in which I examine each character - it will all make sense by the last post. There's also a bit of a TL;DR at the end, but I encourage you read the full thing (or at least skim it)

~-~-~

Let's start with Leo.

Leonardo: The Strategist/Initiator

Leo was one of the easiest characters to analyze since a major focus of his character arc is the development of his fighting skills and his ability to cooperate with his team and act as a leader.

Fight Style:

Balanced/Well-rounded Fighter

Leo is the most balanced fighter on the team. He is a capable offensive and defensive fighter and has enough physical strength and acrobatics to handle many types of fighting styles. We see him fight everything from paper ninjas to the large Foot Brute and Draxum's hired goons (the dog guys) without seeming to be weak against one type of enemy. He may not necessarily be stronger than them but he is very versatile. However, this means that Leo doesn’t have a specific ability that makes him stand out in a fight (mystic and ninpo powers aside) the way his brothers do, and won’t have any inherent advantages that he can utilize when fighting a particular enemy.

ROTTMNT Character Fight Style Analysis - Part 1: Leonardo

Strengths and Roles in a Fight:

The Strategist:

Leo’s role as the team’s strategist is pretty obvious. He may not be given the title of “Leader” until the end of season 2, but we see throughout the show that he is a very quick thinker and is skilled at coming up with clever and effective plans. Of course, each member of the Mad Dogs supplies ideas and plans, but Leo is especially good at developing and implementing them. The most obvious example of this is his fight in the Battle Nexus in 'Many Unhappy Returns, but there are other times when he is the one to put all the pieces together (think of the big attack against Draxum in the Shredder armor in 'End Game').'

ROTTMNT Character Fight Style Analysis - Part 1: Leonardo

The Initiator:

Leo acts as the initiator in battle as he is either one of the first into battle or is the one to start a coordinated attack. This doesn't mean he necessarily has to attack first, but that he is usually the one to put the plan into action. This role relies the most on his mystic powers as his portal and teleportation powers give him the maneuverability needed to accommodate any plan. His abilities allow him to enter and disorient the enemy, or he can portal allies into the fight and create opportunities for a follow-up attack. This plays into his strengths as the Strategist as being the initiator can help him begin a strategic attack by maneuvering people or objects into their needed positions.

ROTTMNT Character Fight Style Analysis - Part 1: Leonardo

Utility:

Leo’s skills truly shine in a fight against a few number of enemies as he can better focus his strategies on a specific enemy and direct the battle in his favor. With less pieces in play, he can properly utilize his mystic powers and act as the initiator instead of bouncing around a battle with no real objective in mind. It becomes easier to coordinate attacks with his brothers and allies since they don't have to spend time fighting different enemies.

However, in a fight with multiple enemies, Leo’s skills can be easily overlooked. Sure, he can direct the fight as the Strategist, but there’s only so much he can do in the middle of the chaos. His role as the initiator isn’t all that effective in a fight with many enemies as well as he and his brothers tend to just rush into battle in those situations. However, Leo’s balanced fighting style means he could theoretically go up against every type of enemy and won’t be at a noticeable disadvantage, which is very useful in a chaotic battle.

How it Plays into His Character:

Admittedly, the show is probably the most direct in using fights to show some of Leo's character traits, since so much of his arc is centered on his fighting and use of mystic powers. However, Rise does use this in enough interesting ways to make it worth mentioning.

While his role as the Strategist plays into Leo’s strengths as a character, it also highlights Leo’s problems with team communication. When Leo plans a strategy, he often fails to inform his allies of his plans, which can result in losing the battle or frustrating those around him. The show demonstrates this by having him make strategies in a fight but leaves his allies in the dark and confusing them. Leo does this, in part, to show off, but also because the plan simply makes sense in his head, so it would be easier for him to just do it instead of having to take the time to tell everybody his plan.

ROTTMNT Character Fight Style Analysis - Part 1: Leonardo

The initiator is a good role for Leo’s powers and fighting style, but also feeds into his cockiness and overconfidence in a fight. Leo has a tendency to play the hero and either overestimate his abilities or underestimate his opponent. He may be the best fit for going first in a fight but Rise uses some fights to show how this can conflict with some of his character flaws. When he goes into battle first overconfident and cocky, it only conflicts with the team, but with his own role as the Strategist. He could, theoretically, bring his teammates into the fight after him, but if he thinks he has an easy win in front of him, all strategy goes out the window.

ROTTMNT Character Fight Style Analysis - Part 1: Leonardo

His status as a balanced fighter and lack of specialization in battle is a likely source of some of Leo’s insecurities about his place in the group. We see in 'Portal Jacked!' how Leo doesn't feel like he has a proper role on the team - that he's just the face man - which is reinforced by the way he fights in comparison to his team. Leo is well suited to fight a wide range of enemies, but when his brothers have easily identifiable skills that can give them a distinct advantage, it becomes difficult to recognize the advantages he brings to the team as a well-rounded fighter.

ROTTMNT Character Fight Style Analysis - Part 1: Leonardo

Working as a Team:

As mentioned earlier, Leo's strengths as a fighter make him the one best suited for the first attack in a coordinated team strike as it highlights his skills as the Initiator and the Strategist. It shows how well he can fit those roles when he plays to his strengths and overcomes the character flaws that stand in his way. While the others do have skills that may allow them to start the first attack, Leo's abilities and strengths as a fighter give him (and his team) a much stronger advantage in this position.

Leo also does well when he goes second to last in a team attack, as he can finalize a strategy and prepare for a final blow by putting all the pieces into position. However, this is more situational as there are other characters just as well suited for that second-to-last position and can fill that role when Leo needs to be the one to start a team attack.

Leo’s fighting style, however, does make him a poor fit for a follow-up attack or the final attack in a fight. His balanced fighting style means he isn’t suited for a strong final attack. While he is technically fine acting as a follow-up attacker, it doesn’t really play into his strengths and isn’t that effective when fighting with others who are more suited to that role. His balanced fighting style also prevents him from effectively dealing that final blow to an enemy since he doesn't have a specialized strength in this regard. Again, he can do it, he just isn't well suited for it.

The way Rise develops and explores Leo's fight style demonstrates one of my favorite things the show does with his character (in fact, all of its characters). At first glance, he may seem pretty one-note and predictable, but as we go through the show, we see how both his character is actually more complex than we were first led to believe. The fights Leo participates in reflect that, as not only do his skills develop over the course of the show, but we begin to see how it all ties into his personality and growth as a character - making his fights more meaningful than what they may seem.

ROTTMNT Character Fight Style Analysis - Part 1: Leonardo

~-~-~

[Little bit of a TL;DR: Leo is the team's strategist and initiator in fights, supported by his balanced fight style and mystic powers. These roles play into his greatest strengths but they also expose some of his character flaws and insecurities. In team fights Leo is most effective as the first or second to last attacker but isn't well suited for a follow-up or final attack]

Thanks for bearing with me on this stupid long post. They're all going to be like this btw. Next up will be Raph. I plan to get that done and posted tomorrow.

Zuko, Candid Cam

zuko, candid cam

I’ve been really happy that AtLA has finally dropped on Netflix USA - I know a lot of people haven’t seen it before, and I’ve been watching it virtually with some friends who haven’t either. I hope yall can enjoy it! Please see if you haven’t already!

Apart from some episodes from season 1, I’ve only seen it once while it was airing on tv the first time all those years ago, but it had such an impact on my life! And on our culture and western animation especially. I’m pursuing animation now, actually :D For this one I really wanted to practice with acting and facial expressions, and I feel like I’ve learned a lot. I hope you like it ;u;

I feel like I only ever draw fan art of Zuko lol…

I love your eleutherophobia! What are other fics that most influenced that that you recommend?

First and foremost, a huge honking caveat: Most of these are not Animorphs fan fiction.  I am sorry about that, especially if you’re here looking for Animorphs recs.  I tend to be super-picky in what I read in general and that tends to be quadruply true for Animorphs.  There are lots of good stories that I know I am missing, and for that I’m sorry.  This is just my own wildly eclectic and deeply idiosyncratic list of Things That Influenced Eleutherophobia.

Sword and Shield, Jewel and Song

Author: Elecktrum

Fandom: The Chronicles of Narnia

Genre: Action/Adventure, Family

Length: 1k to 104k (several fics in a loosely interconnected series)

Summary: Details the first two years of the Golden Age of Narnia from Peter’s and Edmund’s points of view, as the Pevensies deal with curses, quests, political tangles, cannibalistic giants, grumpy dwarves, and coming of age.

Why I love it: This writing is complex, disturbing, hilarious, and deep.  It features characters who are so fleshed out you feel like you could meet them on the street, imagery so powerful it haunts your mind’s eye for days after reading, and dialogue that seamlessly melds with the original novels’ writing style.  More importantly, it updates and refines C.S. Lewis’s work for a modern audience through adopting a contemporary perspective on gender, race, and social roles.  It has irreparably re-terriformed Narnia in my mind, and for that I am grateful.

What it gave me: This author understands absolutely how to write siblings, including a set of four siblings with a deeply complex history such as the Pevensies.  I gladly take lessons from this series not only on how to write families but on how to write leadership and consciousness with one’s public role interacting with one’s extreme youth and inexperience.

The Maddest House

Author: Busaikko

Fandom: Harry Potter

Genre: Romance (Remus/Sirius), Kid Fic, Adventure

Length: 43k

Summary: Sirius gets custody of Harry after James and Lily’s deaths.  Over the course of his first decade as a parent, he and Remus must learn to forgive each other for past transgressions and eventually to fall in love again.

Why I love it: This story makes incredibly creative use of some of the devices and concepts from the original Harry Potter series while also adding a lot of its own flairs and twists to the plot.  The writing is so good specifically for all the things the author doesn’t say: for instance, we never find out the exact circumstances of Remus and Sirius’s breakup, but all the tiny hints allow us to infer a very disturbing picture.  It’s also notable that this author resists the temptation to make any of the characters anything extraordinary, instead celebrating the fact that they are a handful of mostly-incompetent mediocre blokes thrown into a situation beyond their control who nevertheless rise to the occasion.

What it gave me: WORLD BUILDING.  There are dozens of running jokes and small elements in this story that really make Sirius and Harry’s life feel real, from the book of domestic spells that worms its way almost accidentally into every aspect of Sirius’s life to the question of what it would really be like on an everyday level to have one-seventh of Voldemort living inside one’s soul.

Redefinition

Author: KilroyWasHere

Fandom: Blue Bloods

Genre: Family, Adventure

Length: 137k

Summary: Schuyler Van Alen learns self-defense, befriends her antagonistic cousin, finally goes on a date with her best friend, discovers her family history, and generally gets her groove back.  Oh, and she prevents Lucifer from rising and ending the world along the way.  Canon divergence as of Masquerade.

Why I love it: This story draws attention back to a lot of the coolest aspects of the Blue Bloods series (the protagonists as Grigori, the plethora of female heroines, the idea of high school drama echoed on a literally cosmic scale), most of which Melissa De La Cruz sort of tosses out and then leaves untouched on the table.  Other commenters have said that this story is a more worthy sequel to Masquerade than the deeply problematic Revelations, and I could not agree more.

What it gave me: I should admit that I’m biased, since I betaed this fic and its author currently betas my stories, but this is the one story that taught me more about the possibilities of fan fiction than any other I’ve read.  It updates and complexifies the canon work, challenging its casual sexism and also celebrating its daring scope.  It actually takes the time to explore the implications of her universe and its rules in full, bringing considerably more depth and nuance to the characters’ relationships than are present in canon.

The Tocsin

Author: Beth Epstein

Fandom: Animorphs

Genre: Canon Divergence

Length: 7k

Summary: After Tom breaks his leg, the yeerk inside him gets replaced—with a member of the Peace Movement.  He teams up with Jake and ends up acting as an older brother of sorts to the entire Animorphs team.

Why I love it: This was the story that got me intrigued about the possibilities of Animorphs if the kids actually had someone they could lean on instead of each other.  It was also, for many years, the only work of fan fiction on the entire internet that offered any speculation at all about what Tom Berenson would be like if he was ever given a voice in the canon series, and I must have reread it 50,000 times as a result.

What it gave me: A fascination with Tom, for one.  I don’t know that I even paid much attention to him as a character before I encountered this fic and then immediately returned to reread #31, wondering for the first time about the person underneath the homicidal alien using his body.  Needless to say, I’ve been wondering ever since.

Another Brother

Author: AvocadoLove

Fandom: Avatar the Last Airbender

Genre: Family, Action/Adventure, Canon Divergence

Length: 224k (INCOMPLETE)

Summary: Hakoda finds a mysterious firebender child with a very distinctive scar on his face but no memory of his past life, and decides to take mercy on the little boy.  Zuko grows up as a middle child between Sokka and Katara, until the arrival of the avatar at the South Pole brings his old life crashing into his new one.

Why I love it: It’s probably painfully obvious by this point in the list that I’m an utter sucker for stories that focus on families and how they influence the observed lives of fictional characters, and few fics do it as well as this one.  This story is complex without being difficult to follow, plotty but undeniably character-driven.  It’s probably the only incomplete story I can unambiguously recommend, and it holds that status for a reason.

What it gave me: The plot of this story leans heavily into the unique strengths of fan fiction as a literary genre through making use of the readers’ knowledge of the canon work to set up and then subvert expectation after expectation.  Right from the very first moment that Hakoda encounters a child with a burn scar over his left eye, this author uses that dramatic irony to raise intriguing questions and ramp up the tension in this story.  The contrast between the Zuko we see in this story (trying to live up to Hakoda’s expectations, wavering over how to be an older brother to a younger but more-competent Katara, acting as a fond but exasperated mentee to Sokka) and the Zuko we see in canon (with Ozai, Azula, and Iroh in those roles, respectively) raises really fascinating questions about the roles of nature and nurture in shaping canon characters.

The Infinite Coffee and Protection Detail

Author: Owlet

Fandom: Marvel Cinematic Universe

Genre: Angst and Humor

Length: 3k to 144k (several fics in a loosely interconnected series)

Summary: Bucky Barnes has been dehumanized for the better part of the past 70 years, meaning that when he tries to put himself back together he remains in some ways fractured.  However, the ability to make his own choices and to seek out hedonic experiences more than makes up for the confusion of freedom.  Too bad he’s trapped in perpetual indecision about whether or not to contact the former best friend he recently tried to kill.

Why I love it: I first opened this story on a Tuesday afternoon when I had errands I meant to run—and when I looked up, it was evening, nothing had been done, and I’d had an entire new universe implanted inside my brain.  Prepare to be swept away by this writing from the moment you first dip a toe into its waters.

What it gave me: Humor and angst in equal measure, without either one overlapping or diluting the other.  It makes really good use of an experimental writing technique (which I’m normally wary about in fan fiction) to give us an enormously deep emotional connection with its deeply unusual narrator.

ways i have tricked people into thinking i am competent:

bought a really nice looking fountain pen

that sounds like a joke but fountain pens are cheap as shit and when you use one people look at you like you’re a fucking wizard

Ways I Have Tricked People Into Thinking I Am Competent:

this hero 901 cost me $3 on ebay and i don’t know why people assume that this is a pen for intelligent people but they do

it works better when i am using a nice notebook and not the avengers notebook that makes it look like the hulk is grabbing my sweet pen

i write in code which for some reason leads everyone to assume that i am some kind of da vinci motherfucker, instead of the reality, which is that i am writing about dicks and don’t want anyone to know

it looks like i am constantly taking notes on everything which is both intimidating and inaccurate, just the way i like it

i bought a usb clicker/laser pointer for $11 and now it seems like i’ve got this shit on lock, like i am so pro at giving presentations i even own accessories

holding a clicker makes you seem at least 10% more like you know what you’re talking about i’m pretty sure

i check the weekly freebies on creativemarket every monday so now i have a huge folder of pro-looking website themes and powerpoint templates and fill-in-the-blank resumes (also a lot of autumnal clipart and watercolor flowers and script fonts but that is less relevant)

i bought a ceramic coffee mug at world market years ago and it makes me look like a productive coffee-drinker because no one knows it’s full of hot cocoa

i don’t know why drinking coffee makes you look busy it just does even though i’m pretty sure it statistically reduces productivity

Ways I Have Tricked People Into Thinking I Am Competent:

bonus: not only does no one know i’m just drinking Depression Chocolate but they think i am being Environmentally Conscious rather than Poor As Shit

extra bonus: i can take a sip whenever it looks like someone is going to ask a question and then they ask someone else

i almost never have to answer questions and i leave the room a lot because i have to pee constantly so double extra bonus

“That’s a very good question, and one that deserves an in-depth answer, so if you’d like to leave me your card I’d be happy to discuss it with you later one-on-one” aka “how DARE you suggest i waste everyone’s time answering this question right now” aka “lmfao i have no fucking clue what you just said please let me secretly google that okay”

bonus: now it seems like you are a sophisticated grownup who assumes everyone has A Card and if they have to settle for writing their email on a scrap of paper you can feel smug about it even though in your heart you know that you are no better

i’ve got anxiety and poor impulse control and anxiety about my poor impulse control so i generally say jack shit about shit and this constant silence is often misinterpreted as aloof observation

no one knows that my air of mystery is actually a bad case of the shy and i am too shy to correct them so it works out

when i’m on my laptop and i don’t want anyone to notice how much i’m dicking around i turn the brightness way down so they can’t snoop without being obvious

at least one window of notepad++ with some random html page or css stylesheet in it makes randos assume you are some kind of genius doing some genius shit, unless they are CS major randos, in which case i guess find an intimidating looking excel spreadsheet and hope for the best

Headcanon that Bruce’s children take over the world after he retires.

Dick marries Kori and becomes the king of Tamaran. He leads the efforts in terraforming Venus to become “New Tamaran.” Thus bringing together Human and Tamaranian in what many are calling a “new golden age.” However he is nowhere near as famous as his daughter, Princess Mar'i Grayson, whom the media quite absolutely adores. His story arc would focus on fighting off Anti-Tamaranian terrorists and dealing with race relations in the media.

Jason rules over an immense Yakuza-esque criminal syndicate that punishes the worst of the worst. His relationship with the others is strained but they all still love him. His story arc would center around coming to terms with himself and Bruce after rescuing Duke Thomas off the streets and taking him on as his ward.

Tim takes over the mantel of Batman alongside Cass (focusing mainly on Justice League affairs) as well as Wayne Enterprises, growing the company to twice it’s former glory. His story arc mainly revolves around him dealing with corporate espionage and struggling to fill Bruce’s Legacy on the world stage.

Cass takes over the mantel of Batman (focusing mainly on Gotham) and creates a world class charity that helps those in need around the world. Her story arc revolves around her learning to become a mentor for Helena and dealing with everything that goes on in Gotham.

Damian becomes the leader of the League of Assassins, turning those who follow him into a force for good. Not all of the league follows him though and he remains at war with them in the shadows: “The Right Hand of the Demon.” His story arc would center around him coming to terms with his identity amidst the mess that his Grandfather had created.

Helena becomes Robin under Cass and still has yet to grow to her full potential. The hungry media gobbles up any information they can get their hands on, all speculating what the next “Wayne Wonderchild” will go on to accomplish. Her arc would center around trying to step out from Cass and her father’s shadow and go out on her own to try and be her own hero eventually leading to the reformation of the Teen Titans.

Idk what the rest of the Batfam would be doing but I do know that Barbara would eventually become the President of the United States.
