I have loved your blog for years and have thoroughly enjoyed reading your mclennon posts..I was wondering what your thoughts were about the cherry bomb incident at the Memphis coliseum in 1966..I believe there is a quote from either John or Paul saying that they were worried that the other was shot 😭

Yes I’ve read this story many times and there are various versions. According to the Beatles, it was definitely a bomb. But according to Beatles fans who attended the event, it wasn’t really a cherry bomb but a firecraker, and it wasn’t thrown on the stage but near the stairs of the stage. 

I think The Beatles believed it was a bomb because they were focused on playing and singing and they saw this fire and then the explosion which happened close to the stage, and they were a bit upset, also because it was the period of the “beatles bigger than jesus” controversy with strong Anti-Beatles feelings in America, fans burning their vinyls on the streets and many protests,...so there was tension at Beatles concerts. And that firecracker might have been a consequence of that turmoil.

I remember that John revealed in an interview that when the “bomb” exploded they suddenly looked at each other to check they were fine. Some Beatles fans who have attended the concert also reported that Paul suddenly looked at John to check if he was alright.  ❤

The Beatles during their Netherlands TV Appearance in 1964, singing "All My Loving". This video was beautifully restored by Carter, I pasted the original audio on it when I noticed John mouthing something to Paul mid performance. All I can hear John saying is "already, babe" as his answer to Paul's "hope that my dreams will come true".

Rewatching parts of Get Back and I am once again asking—why does John only direct his comment regarding Yoko’s divorce coming through to Paul? Like not even a glance at George or Ringo or Billy? Excuse me, what is going on?

edit: it’s so funny to me that Paul doesn’t allude to anything queer in his account of Parisian Beatlemania (he even uses these stereotypical old man voices to impersonate the fans) (bc he’s just *that* deep in the closet) yet George will immediately be like “yeah there were a bunch of gay boys clamoring at our door”

When the Beatles were told to help decorate the Casbah Club, owned by Mona Best (Pete Best’s mother), John Lennon — as he finished painting the room he was assigned to paint [the Aztec Room] — decided to carve his name into the wall as a way to sign his “work of art”. He was caught by Mrs. Best, however, and received a whack on the back of his head as a punishment; but nobody covered it up and it’s still there to this day.

Some time later, when the Casbah was expanding itself, the Beatles were again asked to help with the painting of a new room [the Spider Room]. John decided to carve his name once again into the ceiling, adding a sarcastic little “I’m back” to his signature this time

John: Uh, this is John Lennon talking to you from the heart of the West Side of New York in an interview exclusive — full interview — with brand new New Yorker Sean Ono Lennon, spelled S-E-A-N. Okay? Now tell me Sean, what’s your first impression of New York? Sean: [Baby noises] John: I see. 

An interview John did with his son, Sean, circa 1976. The Lennon family had just gained permanent residency in New York. Sean had been born October of the year prior. I apologize for the background music - I didn’t add that. My favorite quotes/partial transcript:

John: I was wondering if the fiscal crisis of New York had any — 

Sean: [Baby noises]

John: Uh-huh, that’s the one I was talking about, yes.

Sean: [Baby noises]

John: Exactly!

John: I see you’re very fascinated by this - this black box that I’m interviewing you with - this tape recorder. In fact, it seems to inhibit you a little bit. I mean, are you conscious - or self-conscious about the tape recorder?

John: Well, he’s turned his head away because he got very paranoid [laugh]. It’s alright, you know. Just think of it as a very dark relative.

John: Well, I think at that point we’ve left the interviewee because he obviously was getting violent at the thought of not seeing Dean Martin and all those people in their prime, as it were.

I stumbled upon this in the mall once (lured over by a large Magical Mystery Tour poster in a clothing store window), and it's probably my favourite article of clothing. A $450 (CAD) band shirt that will most likely be identified as a band shirt by nobody, even without a jacket.
