Get ready for a slew of Bungo Stray Dogs hcs because I'm so fucking hyped from the trailer. I'm not sure if I've done this before and Tumblr's search function sucks ass but here are some Catboy Atsushi hcs (With some Shin Soukoku) because I am a firm believer that if there's an animal-type character then they should have animal traits
-When he cares about someone he'll do the slow blink, but all the other person can see is Atsushi staring at them kind of intently, blinking slowly, and then returning to his work like nothing happened
-He purrs when he feels comfortable and safe. This could be if someone plays with his hair, curled up before he goes to sleep, situations like that. But it was something the orphanage punished him for so he tries to repress it as hard as he can. When the agency finds out they think it's the cutest thing possible and always try to elicit that response
-He bunts, the thing where cats drag their jawline against something they care about. The first time he does it to Akutagawa they both freeze and Akutagawa just kind of stares at him for a moment. Atsushi promptly realizes what he did and starts panicking and apologizing profusely. Akutagawa's not entirely sure what happened but he thought it was cute, not that he'd ever tell him that of course
-If completely left alone his nails will naturally grow into claws but they were always cut by the headmaster, often cut back so short his nail beds would start bleeding. He still cuts them back

The moon glowed high above the window. Its full glory shone blue light upon the living room floor. Any other person would think of it as peaceful, but the Kunikidazai family wasn’t a group of “normal” people.
Atsushi cowered in the corner, curled up in a ball.
“Don’t let it touch me,” he whimpered. “I’ll hurt you.”
Dazai’s heart ached. He and his husband, Kunikida, had adopted Atsushi quite recently. They’d only been together for about six months, and the abuse Atsushi had suffered at the orphanage still haunted him. Ever since he learned about his ability, he’d been swarmed with fear and worry. Such things shouldn’t trouble a six-year-old. That was horrible, even to an ex-mafia executive.
Dazai had to do all he could to quell his son’s fears.
“You won’t,” he assured. “My ability will stop that from ever happening.”
Atsushi shook his head and buried it in his knees. “I’ll get punished if I hurt you. I can’t… And your ability won’t make Daddy safe.”
His words tore at Dazai’s heart. He looked at Kunikida for guidance.
“See, I’m a problem,” Atsushi mumbled.
“No, you’re not. You’ll never be a problem, okay, Atsu?” Kunikida inched towards Atsushi as to not frighten him more. ‘In fact, I think—“
“Go away.”
Kunikida backed off.
An idea sprung into Dazai’s mind. “You know, if the moonlight doesn’t tough you, you won’t turn into a tiger. So, why don’t we build a pillow fort to block it?”
“A pillow fort?” repeated Kunikida and Atsushi in unison.
“Yes,” said Dazai, motioning for Kunikida to make his way to the couch. “We’ll get lots and lots of pillows, and then the moon will never get you. But I’m going to need your help.”
Atsushi raised his head. “Will you hold my hand?”
“Of course. Pappy’s got you.” Dazai bent down to Atsushi’s level and extended his hand. “I promise to hold onto you as long as you need.”
Atsushi reached forth his tiny hand and clenched his fist around Dazai’s hand.
“Toss me a pillow, darling,” said Dazai. Kunikida obliged. “Would you like to go first, Atsu?”
“O-okay.” Tentatively, he took it and pushed it towards the light, making sure not to touch the places the moon shone upon.
“That’s not too hard, is it?”
“How many do I have to do until you don’t hit me?”
Reality slammed into Dazai like a truck. He nearly choked on a breath. How dare that orphanage director be so cruel? “I’m never going to hit you.”
“Never?”
“I promise. Never, not ever.”
“And me too,” added Kunikida. “We adopted you because we wanted to. We’d never do anything mean to you.”
Finally, Dazai’s heart warmed. Kunikida had originally been very against adopting a child. But now, he cared about Atsushi possibly more than anyone. His words only made that love more apparent.
Atsushi sniffled. “Why are you being nice? No one was ever nice to me before.”
“Because we love you.”
Atsushi processed this. “You… love me?”
Dazai and Kunikida both nodded. “So, we’re going to all build the biggest pillow fort and keep you and us safe. Here.” Dazai grabbed a pillow with his free hand. “I’ll go first. If you just want to watch, that’s okay too.”
He stacked pillows one by one, and after about five of them, Kunikida joined in.
“That’s a pretty big wall,” said Atsushi, gaping at the fort.
Next, Kunikida dragged in two chairs from the dining room and placed them in opposite directions on each side of the fort.
“What are those for?” Atsushi asked.
“Once I put a blanket over those chairs, it’ll be like a new roof. Then, the moonlight won’t stand a chance.”
He draped a blanket over the chairs as described. “Now, all that’s left to do is go inside. If you’d like to.”
Atsushi pursed his lips. “Will you and Pappy be in there too?”
“Of course, if you want us too.”
“Okay.”
———————————————————————————————————
Atsushi lay on the bed of pillows, snoring gently.
Dazai hugged Kunikida’s shoulder against his own, smiling at their son. He didn’t need to say anything. All he had to do was just watch his dear little boy sleep.
“Are you sure he’s not going to transform?” Kunikida asked. “I really do want to keep my promise.”
“No, I think we’ll be fine,” replied Dazai, shifting his view to Kunikida. “And if he does, all I need to do is touch him. It’s impossible for me to get hurt by his claws. But, perhaps it’d be better to sleep in here tonight.”
“I’m fine with that,” said Kunikida. “Anything to let him be happy.”
Lately I’ve been really enamoured with the idea that the tiger is like. a secondary personality in atsushi’s head that he can speak to, and occasionally the living incarnation of gremlin brain
atsushi, grocery shopping: okay so i’ve saved enough coupons to eat this week tiger: fish. eat. consume! atsushi: no, i’m not transforming in the middle of the supermarket so you can go apeshit on the raw fish section. tiger: but….fish prey atsushi: but money can and should be exchanged for goods and services tiger: useless square leaves.
atsushi: smiling is a display of affection, okay? tiger: baring your teeth is a challenge and an invitation to fight or submit atsushi: well, how would you show affection? tiger: slow blink to display trust. rub scent glands against them. chuff. curl around to share warmth. atsushi: that’s– listen I know I had a weird childhood deprived of affection, but I really don’t think that’s how it works. tiger: ….bring prey for them to consume? atsushi: no. i still haven’t been able to look Kunikida in the eyes ever since you left the dead rat on his back porch tiger: was gift. atsushi: he doesn’t eat rats! tiger:…bring mouse? atsushi: you know this would be a lot easier if you didn’t keep suggesting dead animals the rest of the ADA, who’s been watching this one sided exchange go down: 0_0
Atsushi and Akutagawa just cuddling, well TRYING TO CUDDLE
Idk but like I have this one idea that anytime when Atsushi starts to feel like strong positive emotions that tiger is gonna kick in thus I can see him being very careful with Akutagawa with that happens 😂 idk why but it be funny if Akutagawa was just thinking in head going HOLD ME LIKE YOU MEAN it or something
Does Acchan know of the cookie monster? I feel like he would enjoy the cookie monster or see him as a rival
Baby Acchan LOVES the muppets. They're bright and colorful and soft and fun!
He also immediately goes into stalking behavior anytime Big Bird is on the screen, and Atsushi's had to replace the television twice.
HES SO CUTE AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH
headcanons? about bsd? if so i have a headcanon that atsushi tends to do things that he was forced to do at the orphanage subconsciously like maybe if he drops something he would immediately look around and cover himself from getting hit etc etc
Yes, that’s it. You can send me ideas about BSD and I’ll write ideas about it. I’ve wanted to do it since a long time but I was too anxious to ask. I hope you find it interesting. (I apologize in advance if there are mistakes)
Kyouka :
The first time she stayed at Atsushi’s appartment, it can be seen she was the one to make breakfast. However, Atsushi has been raised thinking he had to be the one to take do the chores. From here, a very ridiculous competition started. Atsushi would do his best to wake up as soon as possible to prepare breakfast only for Kyouka to wake even earlier the next day. Kunikida was the one to stop them after one week when he saw how tired the both of them were. He created a whole planning about who had to do what and when they had to do it.
Also, since tofu is quite cheap, it was one of the main meal at the orphanage (when they were fed) so Atsushi knows exactly how to cook it. Kyouka didn’t stop pouting for days when she noticed Atsushi was better at preparing it than her. However, she stopped quickly and instead ordered him to cook it for her. This is how Atsushi stopped seeing cooking as a bad part of his past and started seeing as a way to please his little sister friend.
Junichirou and Naomi :
They both are very tactile people. Naomi likes hugging every members of the agency and Junichirou - even if he’s not at the same level as his sister - likes physical contact to congratulate his friends or to greet them.
The first time the young woman tries to hug Atsushi, the young man jumps meters away from her. Just like the feline which represents him.
When Junichirou tries to high five, he looks at him as if Tanizaki is going to slap him. His whole body tenses, waiting for a punch.
After this, they both are careful with how they interact with him. They invite him to initiate contacts without downright forcing him. They watch carefully and wait for him to be relaxed to try anything.
Only when the siblings escape a life-or-death situation does Atsushi answer to their offers. It’s nothing big or amazing, he just catches sweater and refuses to let it go.
It’s a start.
Kunikida :
Everyone in the agency knows Kunikida is an early riser. He’s always the first one to arrive at the agency. The first one to prepare for work. The first one to finish his job.
One day, he and Atsushi have to leave Yokohama to work on a case for the military and end up sharing a room.
That’s when the man discovers how Atsushi doesn’t really sleep. It’s more like cat-napping. He dozes off for a few minutes and startles seconds after.
The morning after, Atsushi is already ready for their investigation, totally dressed. It’s especially concerning since Kunikida didn’t even hear him do it.
It becomes obvious the boy doesn’t really sleep per se.
From here, Kunikida is careful to his subordinate’s sleeping pattern. He watches for when Atsushi will be about to collapse because of exhaustion and is always ready to collapse. He asks Fukuzawa if they can create a spot where he can rest if everything becomes too much (Shut up, Dazai ! It is not favoritism ! ).
Dazai :
No matter to who you ask, they will always give you the same answer : Dazai isn’t the spokesman for mental health. He spent more of his youth torturing and killing people, hurting his subordinates and bathing in the darkness.
He’s not naive enough to expect himself to totally change but he can try.
Odasaku didn’t transform him, he only made him discover new possibilites. Possibilites he had ignored his whole life before : he could be a good person.
So when he had met Atsushi, he had quickly understood the orphan was the perfect opportunity to prove Odasaku was right.
Dazai can’t change Atsushi, he can’t alleviate his loneliness or give him physical comfort. He’s just not good at it. However, pissing people off, this he can do.
Atsushi is not good at expressing his feelings. He hides them and don’t let anyone see his anger or his sorrow. Most of the times, he only offers soft smile as if he doesn’t want anyone to see his negative pulsions. It just won’t do, Dazai concludes. So he starts ploting.
Some of Atsushi’s belongings start disappearing, Dazai steals his food everytime he lets his guard down. To summarize it : he finds every sore points and play with them. It’s only when Atsushi throws a pile of papers to his face that Dazai allows himself to smile truthfully.
This bright boy will be alright.
His nose is probably broken though.
Once again, I apologize for any grammar mistakes I didn’t pay as much attention to it as I usually do. Sorry.
Headcanon: Atsushi can only fall asleep when he’s either completely exhausted or when he knows he’s safe.
He rarely got a good nights sleep growing up. Something that carried over when he was abandoned to the streets. He’d walk for hours despite having no energy hoping it would tire him out enough.
The first true good night sleep Atsushi had was during a game night with the Agency. Dazai was in the middle of antagonising Kunikida when Atsushi slump forward.
Luckily he only lightly head butted Dazai’s shoulder.
But he didn’t move.
Dazai was going to ask what was up and then noticed Atsushi was knocked out. He got everyone’s attention and Ranpo deduced it was because Atsushi was exhausted.
Kunikida made a note to make sure Atsushi wasn’t overworking himself (hypocrite.) While Dazai attempted to gently pry Atsushi off him. He froze when Atsushi cried out and clung to Dazai’s arm. His whole body shaking with fear.
Ranpo’s grin left his face, he took off his glasses and simply gestured for Dazai to stay.
Dazai frowned but did so. Running a hand through Atsushi’s hair and reassuring him he was here. It was a relief to them all when Atsushi calmed down. Make an adorable chuffing sound as he did so.
Kunikida questioned what was happening and Kenji said he seen animals on the farm act like this. Ones that were injured or had been mistreated by others would act on edge.
But when they found others that made them feel better they’d act more like themselves.
And stick to the others like glue.
And the Agencies were Atsushi’s glue, his safety.
A blanket was wrapped around Atsushi and in the end they all had a sleepover in the living room of the dorm building.
Because after that none of them could bare to leave Atsushi alone right now. And Atsushi had the best sleep he’d had in years.
big shoutout to red in tooth and claw for putting a name to my obsession (it's been 3 years i think this is going to stick with me for life)
Rewrite x3 adventures: oh god why did I start this I am Not Capable
Also rewrite adventures: this paragraph could probably be cut but!! If you weren’t a coward he would’ve licked the injury
Atsushi’s tongue feels too large in his mouth. The tiger in him urges him to dip his head and groom Akutagawa awake, to clean the wound with firm swipes, to press close and share warmth with a too-cold body. Atsushi droops, only to jerk back the second he catches himself, swallowing hard. He is not a tiger, he repeats silently as he carefully straightens Akutagawa’s supine form. Licking would be gross and not helpful and Akutagawa would be mad.
