as covid cases spike in the US, i really hope the rest of the world knows that the majority of the US does not want states to reopen, kids to go back to school, and life to “return to normal”. the majority of us still practice social distancing, still wear masks, still want the US to remain in quarantine until covid is under control. it only seems like the US doesn’t give a shit bc we have an incompetent fuckhead in the White House and bc the loudest people are the morons who want to get their hair cut, want to go to the beach, want sports games to resume. the squeaky wheel gets the grease, so the loudest Americans, the ones complaining about quarantine, are the ones you’ll hear

in the original post i was referencing sensory processing disorder, which is very common among autistic folk. i’ve only done limited research, but it’s my impression that sensory processing issues can be comorbid with/a subcomponent of a number of other mental health issues. basically, it’s a good conversation for the neurodivergent community to have! 

different sensory stuff can cause trouble for different people. E.g. your example of the sound of chewing/swallowing. some common sensory issues I’ve seen people talk about:

sound of styrofoam

sound of utensils/ceramics/plateware/etc

chalkboard & nails (very common one!)

fingernails scratching on certain surfaces 

the compulsion to ‘balance’ out footsteps, physical actions (such as blinking, hand gestures, etc). for instance stepping ‘too hard/not hard enough’ on one side and needing to ‘make up for it’. 

the feeling or sound of rough surfaces

feeling of old/dirty/wrong fabrics

those are some of the more common ones, but there are plenty of others. often there’s no predicting it–it’s a nuisance, but there aren’t always rules!
