i’ve spent the past seven and a half years saying “qué peña” instead of “qué pena”.
me, a whole late bilingual, has been walking around saying “what a ROCK!” instead of “what a PITY!”

"Ooh, bar snacks! I'll definitely do chips and dip." Toni fished into her jeans, placing her card on the table. "I'm still going to help pay, you can't stop me." She playfully poked her tongue out at the woman across from her. A finger dragged underneath the words on the menu, her eyes darting between the words and Megan. Their eyes meet, causing an embarrassed flush to spread across her face. 'First date of many.' Oh. Oh! It was a date!
"If this goes well, I'd love to see you a lot more!" Her stomach twisted and turned from nerves. "I just..." Toni looked down, trying to focus on her words. "I don't know if I'm ready to commit to anything right now?" She looked back up to assess Megan's reaction. Her eyes widened, hands slamming flat onto the table. "That could always change! I think you're a very beautiful woman, I just want to get to know you before we put a name on..." Her hand waves back and forth between them, "this."
Her head began to swim, thoughts rushing through her head. Her hands came up to rub her temples, head hanging down. "ugh, I'm sorry. I haven't been on a date in a long time... I'm not really good at the whole 'having a personal life outside of work' thing." Toni felt thick in the head, her mouth moving before her head could think about what she was saying. That's probably exactly the same way Megan had felt and Toni just made it seem like she was expecting more from just one night.
Toni's cheeks flushed, but it was partially covered by the sunglasses she wore. Toni often got compliments on social media, but to get them face-to-face by a particularly beautiful woman is ... much different. She coughed slightly in an attempt to get her mind from wandering and get back to the present. "Thank you. You look..." Toni paused, placing a finger to her lips in an attempt to think of a word. "Is it too forward to say you look ravishing?" Her eyebrow quirked up just slightly above her glasses, her fake trans-atlantic accent peeking out to accentuate her words. It was less of a question and more of a statement. Before she could overthink what she was saying, she tilted her head towards the door. "Shall we head inside?"
