In the 1914 formal photo session, the Grand Duchesses were photographed in traditional Russian court dress as part of a larger effort to promote national unity during World War I. The photos were intended to emphasize the Imperial family's Russian identity, as public sentiment was turning more nationalistic.

Anastasia,the youngest, reportedly found the long photo sessions boring and tiring. In private letters and diary entries from family members and staff, it’s mentioned that she would sometimes fidget or make faces between shots!though, of course, none of that shows in the polished final portraits.
