Cultural Differences - Blog Posts

Something I love about writing fantasy that includes multiple nations/kingdoms/cultures is the small character interactions between people from different places

An example from my own work is the way two people from different kingdoms drink tea. One puts the leaves in the cup and pours the hot water over it, and the other steeps the leaves in the pot. The one who has the leaves in the cup always explained it as “if someone doesn’t want tea, they can have hot water instead.” And the other kind of just, watches thinking, “this is odd, but it’s genius”

So yeah, cultural differences lead to fun character interactions

(I deal with this irl through teaching my white friends how to eat Asian food)

Tbh it is kinda funny how so many Americans are convinced that every house over like 10 years old has a ghost.

"This house is ONE HUNDRED YEARS OLD. People have DIED in here" like ok and...?

Werewolves and vampires court with passion and zealousness once they find their mate, not that you knew what your company really was.

Contrast that with the Darling's sense of stranger danger –everything was moving too fast! Only the second date in, and he was trying to whisk you away...somewhere?! The man said he was bringing you to the countryside to watch the stars like he did in the days of old, to help ease your anxiety. His strange mannerisms didn't help. His words almost sent you into a panic and you thought of asking him to stop the car or jumping out.

The roads were getting darker. All you could think of as you passed empty meadows was how this was the sort of place where young women disappeared.

You told your best friend beforehand you were going on a date. Now that the plan derailed, you were discretely sending live feed of your location. If you weren't going to make it through the night, you hoped they'd at least find your body...

Well I know most suburban American homes often have a small room( normally near the garage) that is just for the washer and dryer. Or they could be put in the garage or basement, or we just say fuck it and do all our laundry at the laundry mat at the strip mall.
