Sometimes I see people absolutely losing it over Stan bros fanart because they can’t tell if it’s platonic or a ship—and honestly? It’s because, deep down, they know it could be a ship. And yeah, it gets kinda exhausting how much people feel the need to emphasize “it’s just brotherly!!” Like… if it were that obvious, would you really need to say it?
I don't want to be (too much of) an asshole but the whole "I shouldn't have to explain this isn't Stancest" to me is so sad... And frustrating. I genuinely want to ask these people to take a walk with me and show them their own work... Show them the way the characters lounge on one another, how they sleep cuddled together and live in the same house and kiss each other on the cheek and forehead and hold each other in bed... And then ask them "Would you sleep with YOUR sibling like this?"
Genuinely. Would YOU, the artist, sleep with YOUR SIBLING like this? Look. I wish we lived in a big beautiful world where anyone can cuddle with anyone and it doesn't have to mean anything, but we don't LIVE in that world. There is such a thing as couple codding, and the way that the twins get drawn draped over each other, placing their hands on each other's pecks etc etc... This is COUPLE language. Put ANY OTHER CHARACTERS THAT ARE NOT SIBLINGS in this situation and then look me in the eye and tell me that they are not a couple. Stancest does not have to involve SEX if you do not want it to- queer platonic couples are a THING. What you are drawing are queer platonic Stancest. The worst part is there are a lot of artist who draw QPR or nonsexual stancest, who embrace the term without feeling drawn to the sexual side. And I don't want to be like "Back in my day shit was better", but back in my day there wasn't this same violent hatred there was, and people were a bit more ready to be open about liking it. If you look at old Stancest art from when the show was still airing, you'd find pieces with a LOT more attention then they'd ever get now, and I don't think it's just because of lesser audience. I think the GravFalls fandom is thriving. I just think that fandom is so much more widespread and therefore so much more policed then it used to be. Anyway. It sucks, there's no fixing this, but I'm glad the Stancest fandom has gotten a little laugh out of it. But also maybe don't harass people, all right?
Thought Fiddlestan was a purely comedic ship for a while but now I get it, I see the light. It’s about a man who nurtures and cares for others to the point of heartbreak meeting a man who doesn’t remember what it’s like for anyone to care about him. It’s about them being warm together around the absence of someone they both love. It’s about Fiddleford’s innate domesticity comforting a man whose deepest desire was to come home. It’s about falling in love with the same face again but in a new context that heals your past trauma. It’s about Stan’s unbridled affection finally validating someone who desperately needed the recognition. It’s also about very funny old man yaoi.
When I was 13, I loved scrolling through Google for fanart and reading Pinecest fanfics on Wattpad. Eight years later, not much has changed—I’m doing the same thing with Stancest here on Tumblr and Ao3
any songs that remind you of stancest?
other than that taking what’s not yours by tvgirl is Very post-portal stancest coded
We know that Ford is incredibly guilty about Stan's death, cause he's the one who pulled the trigger, but what about Mabel?
She's the one who gave Bill the rift. And true she didn't know what it was, and true she was just a kid. No one blames her for what happened... no one, except herself
If she just hadn't needed that little bit more summer, if she wasn't so scared of growing up, Stan would still be here
Stan was the only one who tried to cheer her up that day. And what had he gotten for his troubles? He had to sacrifice himself at the end of the world just to save her and Dipper
Sometimes, she wonders if escaping Mabel land was the right call. True, she had Dipper to face everything together with, but neither of them knew how to face this. At least in Mabel land, she couldn't be used as leverage. At least when she was in Mabel land Stan was still alive
Mabel's a very forgiving person by nature. She would have forgiven Ford eventually anyway, but a part of her knows that the reason she forgave Ford so easily is because she blames herself, for all of it.
We Swear It’s the Cold - (Pages 1-9) Part 1
I was rereading one of my fave fics and I really like this one. It’s also one of the first stancest fics I’ve ever read, then I’ve got hooked lol.
For @cheeziswin, you’ve been a super sweetie and I always wanted to draw ya a gift so enjoy!
The fascinating thing about having only just joined gravity falls fandom, but being previously aware of its presence on the internet; is I know a decade ago the only character with major presence out of the fandom was Dipper. Like if you stumbled on fanart or content while not in fandom most of it involved him. Dipper getting possessed, Dipper beat up, Dipper tormenting his family while possessed, him with Wirt of garden wall.
So when I watched I expected a slightly different show. Something slightly less rounded. Something really only focused on Dipper. Primarily I expected more Dipper getting possessed whump. I thought he was possessed for a string of episodes at one point bc of the sheer amount of Dipper possession art I saw roughly a decade ago.
But now the characters with the biggest presence are the old men. In particular theres alot more focus on Fiddleford than ever. Alot of art, analysis, and fic is recontextualizing the traumas these old men have been through. The way the memory gun is an analogy for addiction, the way Bill is just a shitty abusive ex (an entertaining one, but one nonetheless), the way that the show tackles generational trauma so on an so forth.
But thats still not the show in its entirety, the microscope just shifted.
What I'm saying is there is a non zero chance some poor soul will walk into Gravity Falls thinking its more about old man Mcgucket than anything, only to get wildly confused. I wish them luck I can only imagine the show that existed in their head before watching and I hope the tonal disonace was as funny as mine was when I realised Dipper was just some sweaty kid who loved his family.
Was rereading journal 3 and like. When Fiddleford and Ford are talking about their dreams Fiddleford mentions he wants to return back to California after the portals done and become a successful independent inventor, and make things that help people.
And like at first I'm like oh yeah it's another thing to showcase how kind Fiddleford is (and to also compare Fiddleford to Ford and the difference in their dreams etc). But... The thing is this conversation is right before the gremloblin incident that causes Fiddleford to make the memory gun. And Fiddleford expressly in the show talks about how the memory gun can 'help' people. And how he starts the cult as a way he can 'help' people. His invention to help people ends up being the memory gun.
And I think there's something really ironic here. That at first Fiddleford's desire to help is seen as a good thing, but underlying it, it's deeply problematic (and ends up abusive) when you connect it to the memory gun. And it comes down to that even if you believe you know best, removing people's autonomy to make decisions for others is generally not helping people. It's actually more harmful, and just because you have good intentions doesn't mean that changes the outcome.
Something about them being kids and doing kids stuff is so important to me, I love season fun (one)
