Happy First day of spring!
Learning German grammar like
the most compelling thing a guy can ever say is to another guy and it's "i wish you were a girl" . like record scratch. wow the implications that this phrase has. i think it needs its own bechdel test
seduces u with evil tricks like caring about u and wanting to hear about ur day
Thinking about how succinctly LM 1972 was able to convey the Montparnasse and Éponine dynamic. First by simply having her use a less formal greeting for him than she does for the other gang members, the way she does in the Brick.
Then, check out her reaction when he pulls the knife on her. There’s this fleeting expression of surprise, fear, and dare I say hurt? Before she switches back to that bravery and tells him he doesn’t scare her. But that brief moment, it’s SO GOOD—with just a fleeting facial expression we get such a clear suggestion of their history.
And then THIS MOMENT. The way he looks back at her is so chilling and threatening. Especially because when they’re making the decision to leave, he looks so angry with her—dude’s jaw is so tense. So then when he looks back like this it is incredibly menacing.
And then the way she lets herself fall apart afterwards really solidifies the danger and the menace of what we just saw.
Like future adaptations please take note—you can give us a sense of the connections between various characters that are present in the Brick without taking up very much time at all.
some people think writers are so eloquent and good with words, but the reality is that we can sit there with our fingers on the keyboard going, “what’s the word for non-sunlight lighting? Like, fake lighting?” and for ten minutes, all our brain will supply is “unofficial”, and we know that’s not the right word, but it’s the only word we can come up with…until finally it’s like our face got smashed into a brick wall and we remember the word we want is “artificial”.
