"Hikikomori" is a social condition prevalent in Japan, where young people, unable to cope with social and academic pressures, shut themselves in their rooms for months, even years on end. Yasuo Yamamoto hasn’t emerged in almost a year. Yet even as his condition worsens, someone still cares for him…

I find the social phenomenon of hikikomori very interesting, as it’s an extreme form of escaping to the world of dreams, “living in dreams and never coming out.” Escapism in general is interesting to explore for my project, as it is a sign of dissatisfaction with reality, and can be approached in many different ways, positive and negative. Reading books, taking drugs, jumping out of planes, staying in your room for decades.
