Quick Appreciation Post For „Pumpkinhead“ (1988)

Quick appreciation post for „Pumpkinhead“ (1988)

I was pretty amazed by this movie, I saw it a few years back and just came to think about it again when I finally bought the DVD today.

Honestly I expected a very bad film, but got a mediocre / good creature horror movie. Idk if I would consider it a very good one, but it‘s that kind of movie that you can put on when you are doing your laundry.

First things first:

I love the practical effects on the monster and the design. The concept was interesting but got boring halfway through, tho I have to admit that I like the ending a lot.

Spoiler warning:

Eds (Lance Henriksen) sacrifice was not too heroic but still fits the tone of the film very well. Bonus points for the teaser at the end, that he became the next creature.

And what more can I say except for the fact that Lance Henriksen does a great job as always.

Is this a controversial opinion: the typical 80s flashes add a lot of charm in this movie, sometimes you notice them right away and think of movies like alien or one of the other milestones, but on other occasions you notice them subconsciously, which adds a lot of atmosphere and sometimes even tension.

The film isn‘t scary per se and the deaths are sometimes nearly hilarious (yes I‘m looking at you: Son who „dramatically“ died. I may want to add: even though this was the most impactful death, it was also the worst one. I didn‘t understand that the boy died until the end of the film…), but you can still enjoy it when you when you don‘t look into things deeper (imo).

Best episode imo

It‘s peak comedy

the oingo boingo episode will never not be funny to me

some guy trying to kill five other guys and their dog all for his slut vampire boss follows all the weird instructions from his little brother's magic prophet book, turns an orange into a deadly explosive, panics when backed into a corner and impersonates one of the guys he's trying to kill, gets into a car with them, does such a fucking terrible job at impersonating the edgy loner op 17 year old, somehow doesn't raise any suspicion between the dummy thicc grandpa and the big titty frenchman, eats five cigarettes, acts like he has to take the biggest shit imaginable to escape, only to get blown up by the same orange bomb the flattop frenchman hurled out the window.

Can we like talk about „the invasion of the body snatchers“ (the 1978 version)

I’ll be very vague so no explicit Spoilers

I have so much to say about this movie, as I recently rediscovered my love for it (I‘ll make it short, don‘t worry):

1. The characters, omg the chemistry. Usually those disaster / invasion movies tend to sweep that under the rug and just run with destruction and all that. But here you can truly feel with the characters, the fear they have of losing their loved ones. The resulting performances are great, particularly in that one particular Scene involving Matthew & Elizabeth in the grass (iykyk)

2. The cast. I‘m a sucker for Jeff Goldblum and he crushes his 10minutes of screen time. AND AND AND fucking Leonard Nimoy??? Give me any sci fi / alien movie with Mr. Spock and I‘ll love it. Donald Sutherland as the main Character is amazing, he gives off such an incredible „hard/dismissive“ performance all whilst still being so cute with Brooke Adams and his other friends, showing the audience, that he really does care.

3. The effects are amazing, the scene with Matthew in the Garden of his home is so terrifying and disgusting because of the sound, camera and effect work

4. The ending is omg, I could cry

5. the basic concept is something we have seen before but the execution and little adjustments (the way the aliens take over and alert one another) is just so unique and disgusting

This is not all I have to say but I promised to make it short
