Press : What musician do you respect most?
Paul : John Lennon
John : Paul McCartney
why aren't you posting more song analysis?
Thanks for the message anon!
I hesitate a lot when stating my views due to it being part of the minority on tumblr. (I'm one of those who believe J+P had an explicit love affair), to interpret their songs, I view it from that standpoint....
English is my third language and it takes a bit of work because if you interpret one song, it is usually interconnected with other songs.
Can't Buy Me Love and I Feel Fine as an example. I've always wondered why John was staring at Paul in the beginning of the "I Feel Fine" music video "Baby's good to me, you know", then it kinda clicked, that he might be replying to Paul's song (oh, there she goes, reaching):
In "Can't Buy Me Love" Paul wrote:
I'll buy you a diamond ring my friend If it makes you feel alright I'll get you anything my friend If it makes you feel alright
(very friend coded indeed and then, the question "if it makes you feel alright?" John answers with his song "I Feel Fine".)
In "I Feel Fine" John wrote:
She's so glad, she's telling all the world That her baby buys her things, you know He buys her diamond rings, you know
(John is telling the story in 3rd person "that she's being treated right", the boys were harmonizing on the "I'm in love with her and I feel fine" which is the lover's answer to the girl's claim).
I FIND JOHN AND PAUL ADORABLE ANSWERING EACH OTHER LIKE THIS
I wish I could share more of my views. But I'm scared to be labelled delusional as it is and be asked for receipts to claims I am not ready to show yet....
JOHN PULLED THE βno actually weβre just good friendsβ πππππ madness.
My favorite comments on How Do You Sleep
βAt the beginning it was very hard, knowing that we were going in there to do this track with him. It was pretty emotional. He wasnβt there. I loved John. We had to imagine heβd just gone for a cup of tea, that heβs gone on holiday but heβs still here. Thatβs the only way I could get through it.β

3 years can sometimes make quite a difference, canβt it?

βTo Ann Hope you will be out of hospital soon, Love from George Harrison xxxβ
Pictured are two autographed photos, sent to a Beatles fan, Ann Bartlett, who was just 16 years old when she died of leukemia in the 1960s. It appears that George Harrison signed his own name, and then forged John, Paul and Ringoβs autographs for this critically ill fan:
ββMy daughter died of leukaemia in the late 1960s when she was 16. She was a mad Beatles fan and our next-door-neighbour in Barnet was John Riley, The Beatlesβ dentist,β [Harry Bartlett] said. βWhen Ann was ill, she and a friend did some drawings of The Beatles which he volunteered to give them, and they sent back some photographs. I gave them to my solicitor Colin Wright who is raising money for leukaemia research at the UEA, and has also lost a daughter to leukaemia.β Mr Bartlett said it came as no surprise to find out that three of the Beatlesβ signatures could be phoneys. βIβd heard in London that George Harrison was the master forger of the group,β he added. Andrew Bullock, head of the book department at Keys, said they have consulted a leading dealer in Beatles autographs who believes it βmore than probableβ that all the names on the two photographs are Harrisonβs work. βThere are quite a few signatures that were all done by George Harrison, as he was quite pleased that he had got so good at doing them,β he explained. βThere is this young girl who is sadly not at all well, George is aware of this and he is not able to get the other three members to sign. It adds a certain something and itβs actually quite nice.ββ - Autograph Market, 2 May 2009
This may or may not relate to the following letter: βDear Beatles Monthly people, We want to tell you what great fellas the Beatles are. About three weeks ago, we wrote to George Harrisonβs address, saying that our friend, Anne, was very ill, and requesting a pic (signed) to be sent to her. Within a very short time, she received a pic of the lads, signed not only by George, but by every single Beatle! We think they are the kindest boys in showbiz. Hey can you tell me more about I Don't Know (Johnny, Johnny)? because there is very very little info about it online and the only source of the song i can listen to was a youtube video. Considering the excessive research of everything beatles by a fuckton of people, I'm surprised we don't know much about this. (because really, it it is what people say it is, it burned down all the mclennon doubts i had)
Youβre right. This song was written around 1959/1960. The only audio we have, this one, Β is the recording of a rehearsal made in 1960 at Paulβs house.Β
Even if the recording is damaged and the sound is shitty the lyrics are quite easy to understand:
P- Well oh Johnny, oh Johnny, oh god Johnny boy
How are we gonna tell him
Why donβt we go somewhere where he donβt own me
Where can i go?
Oh Johnny boy you wore me out.
Oh Johnny, oh Johnny, oh Johnny boy
Oh Johnny, you got me, you be my boy
Well, a long time ago, I called you Johnny boy.
J- Hey little boy, Iβm packing my shoes, and Iβm leaving you.
I told my Mama Iβm going to see my sister
She donβt see me, I donβt know what Iβm going to do.
P- A long time ago I called you Johnny boy.
I donβt know what to tell the fellas.
Please, oh please, Johnny.
J- Well Iβll tell the fellas that I do love you.
P- I donβt know what Iβm gonna do.
I donβt know what Iβm gonna do when I tell my father
You love me Johnny, I love you Johnny
Iβm not gonna let you go.
P- I donβt know what Iβm gonna do when I tell my father
You wore me down, you wore me down.
Youβre gonna leave, youβre gonna leave me
Please, oh, Iβm not gonna let you go
J- Take the next bus out of town
Then you wonβt let your father down.
I donβt know what good I am since I see life in front of us.
P- Well get out of town,
donβt hold me down.
I donβt care.
J- Get out of town,
I donβt know (3x)
I want to leave right now
To get out of town.
P- You know I want to do it all.
I want to go far away, far away,
I want to go far away.
J- No, no, no, no
P- Yeah, Iβm going far away.
Yeah, weβre going far away.
Weβre gonna leave.
J- Weβre going away,
Yeah, weβre going away,
Gonna leave town right now.
This is one of the very first mclennon song, itβs very clear that they sing their desire to escape together: Paul is afraid of what his father might think of it cause he loves John:
and at 2:39 John replies:
Like, itβs so clear you donβt even need to investigate much about it, no metaphors, no double-meanings, itβs all SO SIMPLE AND EVIDENT, theyβ re singing I LOVE YOU Β to each other, thatβs it! And the song ends with both John and Paul singing that the only solution is to leave and go away from the town.
This song was never put in any Anthology, even if thereβs another song of the same year, Youβll be mine, that has the same shitty audio (the same recording) Β but they decided to include it! βI donβt know (Johnny Johnny)βΒ instead was never included, neitherΒ edited or cleaned, thatβs why some people have doubted its veracity, because very few people have ever listened to it, and itβs considered rare. Itβs such a pity they didnβt try to clean it a bit, but, i think WE ALL KNOW WHY. Canβt imagine this song listed in the Anthology, cleaned, a bit edited, and a random 40s old white man listening to it and exclaiming:Β βWow! what a friendship!β
Paul: When you told me John: When you told me Paul: You didn't need me anymore John: You'll never leave me Paul: You know, I nearly broke down and die
John and Paul: we did not have this conversation before. This song is totally fictional and not about us breaking up at all.
This soulful jamming reminds me of their "Oh Johnny, Johnny" "improvisations". Also John proceeds to talk about Yoko's divorce, sticking it in where it hurts. (Chap really knows how to rub it in).
