Hawkins, Indiana 1986 Halloween
Eddie didnât consider himself âbadâ but most of the school didâŚ.and the teachersâŚ.and his classmates. He sometimes wondered if was the way he dressed, that he was from the trailer park, or some other factorâprobably selling drugs, he concluded.
The drugs weren't why he was making his way to the office on Halloween, though. He was far too careful to ever get caught selling, and no one was stupid enough to rat him out. His boots were squeaking against the linoleum because heâd balled up the meatloaf on his lunch tray and thrown it at Jason Carverâthe jock deserved it for shoulder-checking Henderson and causing him to drop his trayâand Eddie was ready to plead his case but was sure heâd still get punished while Carver got off Scott free.
He put his hand on the doorframe and swung himself into the office. He gave a smile to Mrs. Mackey, the secretary, and winked before turning to the chairs lined on the wall outside the principalâs door. was surprised to see his usual chair near the secretaryâs desk occupied. Even more surprising was who sat there. His steps stumbled as he came to stop in front of Chrissy Cunningham. He tried to ignore how his heart sped up and adrenaline shot through his veins, because, duh, Chrissy Cunningham wouldnât want anything to do with him.
He was about to take a different seat at the end of the row when she looked up at him. Her eyes were watery and her small shoulders hunched.
âYouâre in my seat, but Iâll make an exception for you this time.â He smirked at her. She pursed her lips together and began gathering her backpack from the ground. Before she could move, Eddie plopped down in the chair next to her, tossing his lunchbox and backpack in the other empty chair.
âThatâs prime seating. The cushion hasnât lost its spring yet, minimal stains, and you can hear when Higgins is about to come out and ground you.â
âSorry I took your spot,â she mumbled. She tugged her cardigan tighter around her body.
âItâs no big deal. Iâm a regular here, so Iâll get it back next week.â
She snorted. Some of the tension that made her body stiff left, and he felt oddly proud heâd made even that much progress.
âWhatâd you do this time?â
âIâm sure youâll hear about it later from your boyfriend.â
She raised her eyebrows at him before turning her body slightly to face him more.
âWhatâd you do to Jason?â
Eddie clicked his tongue and crossed his arms. âI mightâve thrown meatloaf at him. In my defense, he had it coming.â
He was bracing himself for the tentative warmth in her eyes to vanish and for her to be angry. Instead she laughedâa big, loud laugh that had her cheeks flushing.
âWas he mad?â
Pleasantly surprised at her reaction, he felt his shoulders loosen. âOh, I think his face almost melted off.â
She laughed so hard so had to brace herself with a hand on his shoulder. He pretended very hard that it didnât make his skin tingle through his shirt and that his brain didnât go fuzzy.
âWell, thanks, I guess.â She wiped under her eyes, though there were no tears.
âFor what? Harassing your boyfriend? Iâll do that any day of the week for youâfor a price, anyway.â
âFor giving my ex-boyfriend what he deserved. A hunk of meat to the back of his head.â
âIs that what youâre in for, Cunningham? Did you key his car or something?â Eddie wouldâve loved to have seen Carverâs shiny car that often cut off his beat up old van with a fresh strip down the side. It was the most vindictive thought heâd had in a long time, but he figured the Carvers had enough money to fix it or just buy a new one, if the string of new cars his parents had had over the years were any indication.
âNo,â she said with a sigh, letting her hand fall into her lap. He watched her jaw tighten before she opened her mouth again. âI cut class.â
He fought a smile because this was clearly a big deal for her. âOh yeah? Whatâd you do that for?â
She shrugged. âJason broke up with me, and my next class was with him.â
âLow blow, Carver. My harassment fee has been waived,â he mumbled.
âI just didnât want to be with him. It was English with Corbin, and when she saw me in the hallway during lunch, she sent me here because it was pretty obvious Iâd skipped.â
âWelcome to the bad kids club.â He playfully bumped her shoulder.
âIâm not bad!â She rolled her eyes, but a grin tugged at her lips as though the idea was a little appealing.
âYes you are. This is just the beginning. Youâre on the path to corruption now, Cunningham.â
She shook her head and worked her bottom lip between her teeth. After a moment she said, âChrissy.â
âHuh?â
âYou can just call me Chrissy, Eddie.â
âAnd here I didnât think you even knew my name.â
âHow could I forget you or Corroded Coffin?â
His heart soared. He opened his mouth to say somethingâanything, he begged his brainâbut then the door flew open.
âMr. Munson,â Higgins said. âHere again?â
Eddie popped up from the chair, scooping his things up in one arm.
âHe loves me.â He winked at Chrissy, relishing in her blush, before saying, âSee you around, Chrissy.â
Chrissy couldnât really focus on her reprimand. Principal Higgins droned on about how she needed to be more responsible, sheâs a good girl, yadda yadda. Her mind kept wandering back to the boy she had always secretly admired.
From the day sheâd seen him on stage in sixth grade, part of her had wished she was Eddie Munson. Bold, brave, loud. But she was someone who nearly cried when getting in trouble for cutting class.
She thought for a moment about why Eddie had been there in the first place and felt herself smiling as she crossed the Hawkins High parking lot. Jason had definitely deserved thatâprobably more, but she couldnât think of a suitable punishment for dumping her on Halloween and effectively ruining her plans and wasting a costume.
She hadnât been paying attention and didnât realize someone was behind her until there was a gentle hand on her shoulder. She spun with a gasp, only to find Eddie there with hands up in surrender.
âYou good?â he asked.
âTotally!â Why was her voice so high pitched? Why was her breath coming faster? He was going to know sheâd been thinking of him!
She cleared her throat and shifted her feet.
âWhat are youââ she began just as Eddie said, âYou have anyââ
They both paused. He motioned for her to continue.
âWh-what are you doing tonight?â she asked, feeling especially bold. She clutched her history textbook tighter to her chest.
âMe? Oh. Uh. Just a party down at the quarry.â
âCan I come?â She wanted to jump in front of a car as the words slipped form her mouth. She felt her face get hot.
His mouth popped open in surprise, and she noted some red in his cheek.
âIâyeahâof course, but itâs not really your crowd, just so you know.â
âCan I wear my costume?â
He paused, giving her a thoughtful look, as though sheâd surprised him. âOnly if itâs cool.â
âItâs probably cooler than yours.â
He scoffed. âDoubtful, Chrissy. Very doubtful.â
And thatâs how Chrissy ended up Eddieâs van dressed in the cutest cowgirl costume heâd ever seenâwith pigtails for Christs sake!
She hadnât gotten his Aragorn costume, and heâd resisted going into deep detail about Lord of the Rings, instead saying he was a knight. Sheâd smiled and told it was âvery Eddie.â
They chatted until he killed the engine in a darkened field. A few of his friendsâ cars were already there.
âYou sure you wanna hang out with this crowd?â
âHow bad can it be?â
That was what he asked himself from the moment sheâd asked to come. This was a mixture of his Dungeons and Dragons friends and hisâŚless mainstream friends. There would be drugs and drinking, both of which Chrissy had assured him she was fine with.
âIf it gets too much, let me know, and weâll get out of here, okay?â
âIâve got you got keep me safe,â she said with a delicate little shrug before bouncing out of his van. He sat there shellshocked by what sheâd said for a moment before grabbing his foam sword and following after her.
She trusted him to keep her safe, and Eddie would do anything to make sure her trust was upheld.
âYes!â she yelled, throwing her arms up. Eddieâs friends at other end of the beer pong table groaned as she landed another shot.
She slung her arms around her friendâs neck. He ran his hand up her back, making her shiver. She pulled away and straightened her hat. To distract herself she stuck her tongue out at the other players.
Despite his warnings, Chrissy found that the friends here werenât particularly rough and tumble. Sure there were more drugs than she was used to, but that was just to be expected with older people at the party. Surprisingly, Eddie hadnât touched any drugs or drinks beyond the few shots the opposing team had landed during their gameâand that wasnât many.
âYour girlfriend is mean, Munson.â
She froze and felt Eddie do the same next to her. To correct or let it slide? Her brain told her to correct it, obviously, but she couldnât get the words out of her alcohol addled mouth.
They were saved by a very drunk, very large man falling on their table. She squealed and latched onto Eddie. He held her as she giggled and stumbled. She was a bit more drunk than she usually got at parties, but she couldnât help it. Sheâd had a stressful day, and somehow she knew he wouldnât let anything happen to her.
âHow you doing?â he mumbled.
âIâm good, Eddie. Really good. And you know what?â
âWhat?â He gave her a soft grin.
âI think Iâm glad Jason broke up with me,â she whispered with a big smile.
She giggled again. She thought she heard him say something like âme too,â but she wasnât sure.
Someone started up a boombox, and she gasped. She dragged Eddie closer to the bonfire roaring in the center of it all.
âDance with me?â
âOf course.â
And he looped his arms around her, resting his interlocked hands on the small of her back. She rested her hands on his shoulders. The two swayed, staring at each other in a way that made her stomach flutter.
She was just about to maybe lean forward and place her lips on his when a voice broke through the music.
âHey, freak! Get your hands off her!â
Eddie was convinced the universe hated him. Chrissy had been looking at him like more than just Eddie âthe freakâ Munson when Jason Carverâs hands were gruffly shoving him. Chrissy protested and stumbled. He moved forward to steady her, but Carver shoved him. What seemed like the whole basketball team stood behind Jason, forcing Chrissy to step backwards as they filed in. God, where had they even come from? It was like theyâd materialized out of the dark.
âThe fuck is your problem?â Eddie asked. He heard the music cut off and knew everyone was staring. Carver shoved him again, but this time Eddie grabbed the other boyâs shirt.
âStay away from her,â Jason said softly. âI wonât let you have her, freak.â
Eddieâs vision went red. He already despised Carver, but his newfound protective streak of Chrissy had him pushing the other boy to the dirt. Carver yelped in surprise, but seemed too shocked to defend himself. No oneâs ever fought back, Eddie thought grimly. Well, heâd learn a lesson tonight.
Chaos broke out. It was the misfits against the jocks. Fists flew, beer cans met heads, sneakers were lost to the night, and Eddie ended up straddling Jason in the dirt. He slammed the other boyâs head against the gravel and dirt before yanking him up by the shirt collar and bringing his fish squarely onto his nose.
âS-stopââ
He paid the plea no heed. Everyone thought he was so badâmaybe tonight heâd prove them right.
He landed another punch. He pictured the teachers nodding and talking of how Eddie Munson had always been a bad kid, how his mugshot was inevitably etched in his future. His chest was tight. Thatâs all he was to themâa future convict, a kid whoâd never make it out.
As he raised his bloodied fist again, it was stopped by soft hands. He didnât need to look back to know it was Chrissy because even without seeing her, she set his skin aflame.
âThatâs enough,â she murmured. She pushed down until his arm fell limply at his side. She ran her fingers through his hair. âLetâs go.â
She stepped back, offering him a hand. The bonfire lit her up from behind, turning her into an angel.
My Angel, he thought groggily.
Without another word, he took her hand and took her home.
