'Space Butterfly' Is Home to Hundreds of Baby Stars

image

What looks like a red butterfly in space is in reality a nursery for hundreds of baby stars, revealed in this infrared image from our Spitzer Space Telescope. Officially named Westerhout 40 (W40), the butterfly is a nebula — a giant cloud of gas and dust in space where new stars may form. The butterfly’s two “wings” are giant bubbles of hot, interstellar gas blowing from the hottest, most massive stars in this region.

Besides being beautiful, W40 exemplifies how the formation of stars results in the destruction of the very clouds that helped create them. Inside giant clouds of gas and dust in space, the force of gravity pulls material together into dense clumps. Sometimes these clumps reach a critical density that allows stars to form at their cores. Radiation and winds coming from the most massive stars in those clouds — combined with the material spewed into space when those stars eventually explode — sometimes form bubbles like those in W40. But these processes also disperse the gas and dust, breaking up dense clumps and reducing or halting new star formation.

Be Glad You Don’t Have to Dust in Space!

Throw open the windows and break out the feather duster, because spring is here and it’s time to do a little cleaning! Fortunately, no one has to tidy up the dust in space — because there’s a lot of it — around 100 tons rain down on Earth alone every day! And there’s even more swirling around the solar system, our Milky Way galaxy, other galaxies and the spaces in between.

image

By studying the contents of the dust in your house — which can include skin cells, pet fur, furniture fibers, pollen, concrete particles and more — scientists learn a lot about your environment. In the same way, scientists can learn a lot by looking at space dust. Also called cosmic dust, a fleck of space dust is usually smaller than a grain of sand and is made of rock, ice, minerals or organic compounds. Scientists can study cosmic dust to learn about how it formed and how the universe recycles material.

image

“We are made of star-stuff,” Carl Sagan famously said. And it’s true! When a star dies, it sheds clouds of gas in strong stellar winds or in an explosion called a supernova. As the gas cools, minerals condense. Recent observations by our SOFIA mission suggest that in the wake of a supernova shockwave, dust may form more rapidly than scientists previously thought. These clouds of gas and dust created by the deaths of stars can sprawl across light-years and form new stars — like the Horsehead Nebula pictured above. Disks of dust and gas form around new stars and produce planets, moons, asteroids and comets. Here on Earth, some of that space dust eventually became included in living organisms — like us! Billions of years from now, our Sun will die too. The gas and dust it sheds will be recycled into new stars and planets and so on and so forth, in perpetuity!

image

Astronomers originally thought dust was a nuisance that got in the way of seeing the objects it surrounded. Dust scatters and absorbs light from stars and emits heat as infrared light. Once we started using infrared telescopes, we began to understand just how important dust is in the universe and how beautiful it can be. The picture of the Andromeda galaxy above was taken in the infrared by our Spitzer Space Telescope and reveals detailed spirals of dust that we can’t see in an optical image.

image

We also see plenty of dust right here in our solar system. Saturn’s rings are made of mostly ice particles and some dust, but scientists think that dust from meteorites may be darkening the rings over time. Jupiter also has faint dusty rings, although they’re hard to see — Voyager 1 only discovered them when it saw them backlit by the Sun. Astronomers think the rings formed when meteorite impacts on Jupiter’s moons released dust into orbit. The Juno spacecraft took the above picture in 2016 from inside the rings, looking out at the bright star Betelgeuse.

And some space dust you can see from right here on Earth! In spring or autumn, right before sunrise or after sunset, you may be able to catch a glimpse of a hazy cone of light above the horizon created when the Sun’s rays are scattered by dust in the inner solar system. You can see an example in the image above, extending from above the tree on the horizon toward a spectacular view of the Milky Way. This phenomenon is called zodiacal light — and the dust that’s reflecting the sunlight probably comes from icy comets. Those comets were created by the same dusty disk that that formed our planets and eventually you and the dust under your couch!

My parrot has a vague understanding of the word “no.” He knows to stop doing what he’s doing when he hears it, and he knows how to say it.

He knows it’s a word that is used when he’s doing something he shouldn’t be doing. However, being told “no” doesn’t make him stop doing it in future.

If he’s ever out of my sight or if I’m not paying attention, I know exactly when he’s doing something bad.

Because he says “no” to himself as he does it.

A Few of Louis XIV’s Favourite Things

1. Louis XIV’s favourite colour was blue, especially a dark and vivid blue. This blue was the colour of the costume de sacre, worn by French kings during their coronation ceremony. Another name for this colour is ‘royal blue’.

2. You know what figs, melons, peaches, asparagus, peas, st. nectaire cheese, and oysters have in common? They were some of Louis’ favourite foods. If any of these foods were present at his table, they would be gone within minutes.

3. Louis loved the smell of citrus fruits, and this all came down to his favourite perfume ‘orange blossom’. In his earlier years, he wore an array of different perfumes. In his older years, however, he could only tolerate ‘orange blossom’.

4. Even though he was at war with the Dutch, that didn’t stop Louis from having a keen interest a certain flower; the tulip. Tulips were his favourite flower; however, they were not planted in his gardens until after the Treaty of Nijmegen was signed in 1678.

5. Louis’ favourite opera was “Atys” by Jean-Baptiste Lully. That’s how it got the alias “the king’s opera”. It was said that Louis would hum some of the arias out loud.

6. I bet most of you have heard about Niccolo Machiavelli’s ‘The Prince’, but you haven’t heard the fact that it was Louis’ favourite book. In his memoirs, Louis stated that this book was his ‘favourite nightcap’, meaning it was his favourite thing to soothe him before going to bed at night.

sometimes I think about how people in europe (and esp france and spain) didn’t fucking bathe back in the middle ages to avoid sexual thoughts and I just. Imagine aph france and spain never living down how absolutely revolting they used to smell. Humans at least had to bathe when it became a medical problem or an emergency but nations don’t really have medical issues like that? So theoretically they can get away with being way nastier for way longer. Imagine russia, whose people did bathe, visiting frace with his delegates and being like wtf? are you dying? what’s wrong with you? Imagine germany one day admitting to italy that he sometimes feels awkward interacting with france because he’s so suave and crisp and clean and germany feels like he always smells a little of sweat and dirt. Italy just chokes on his coffee and is like omg don’t even worry about it he’s absolutely the last person alive that could possibly judge you for how you smell holy shit

can you give us more lafayette facts???? id like to know more about him and you seem to know what youre talking about

Lafayette Fun Facts: American Revolution Part Two 1778-1781

Lafayette returned home to France on February 12, 1779

He was greeted as a hero!!!

But King Louis XVI still put him under house arrest to show other nobles they couldn’t just disobey his orders

Lafayette did not abide by the house arrest lmao

He frequently met with Benjamin Franklin and became a diplomat for both France and America

He also sought the command of the French forces that were to set sail for America

But command was given to Rochambeau, who’d been fighting in wars since before Lafayette was born!

Lafayette was heartbroken and embarrassed that he, who knew the American army so well, was not given command of the French Army in America

While he was home he was with his wife, Adrienne, and they mourned the loss of their first child, Henriette, who had died in Spring 1777

He also got a portrait of Washington done based off of an American one he already had

He was seriously obsessed with getting portraits of Washington

He absolutely idolized the man

In Spring 1780 Lafayette set sail for American again

He had gone to the King’s Court in his American uniform to prove a point: that he’d been denied a place in the French Army, so he was taking up his one in the American Army again

America was super excited to have Lafayette back!

(While he was gone he missed one of his close friend’s, Alexander Hamilton, engagement!!)

Lafayette at first acted as a go-between for Washington and Rochambeau, but he proved to be too forthright (this is a theme for him)  for the job and ended up accidentally insulting Rochambeau

They all thought they would be attacking New York City once the French Fleet arrived

That plan started to look less and less likely, and they turned their attention to the southern theatre of the war

Washington gave Lafayette command of some 1, 200 men, mostly light infantry, with the order to take them to Yorktown and harass Cornwallis

Lafayette did an excellent job of it!!

Eventually he was told to really keep Cornwallis busy as the American and French forces secretly descended upon Yorktown, where Cornwallis was camped out

Cornwallis was soon trapped, and the Siege of Yorktown began

Lafayette was the commander of the charges on Redoubts 9 and 10

Hamilton was under his command, and led the charge of Redoubt 9

They won the redoubts in under 20 minutes!!!

This was a crucial part of the battle

And Lafayette emerged from it a true hero

Two days after this, Cornwallis surrendered

Lafayette, at the age of 24, had helped lead the American Army to victory

This forever endeared him to the American people, who at times over the course of Lafayette’s life, appreciated him more than the French

After this battle, Lafayette went back north with Washington before heading home, his service to America as a major general done

He embarked on his next mission: helping America and France become and remain great allies!

Thank you for reading!!! If you want more on Lafayette post-American Revolution let me know and I’d be happy to do a post on it! I’m always happy to talk about anything in early American history! <333

was barron von steuben gay? a while ago someone told me he was and he was kicked out of the army because of it

Here, I made a presentation that includes this. But yes! He was gay!

Baron von Steuben was one of the first cases of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.“

Benjamin Franklin learned of a "brilliant Prussian” military genius, Lt. Gen. Baron Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben, who had a string of successes across Germanic Europe. There was a problem- he’d been asked to depart many of those states and countries because of his “affections for members of his own sex,”.

Then in 1777 von Steuben literally escaped imprisonment in what is now Germany and traveled to Paris. There, Franklin was interviewing candidates to assist Washington back in the colonies when his fellow Colonial representative Silas Deane brought von Steuben to his residence for an interview.

During the process, Franklin discovered von Steuben’s reputation for having “affections” with males and the issue became pressing, as members of the French clergy demanded the French court, as in other countries, take action against this sodomite, whom they considered a pedophile.

Those allegations were fueled by von Steuben’s close ties to Prince Henry and Frederick the Great, also “widely rumored to be homosexual.”

Franklin decided von Steuben’s expertise was more important to the colonies than his sexuality. Along with Franklin and Deane, and personal friends of the baron: Pierre Beaumarchais, author of the “Figaro” plays and an arms dealer who supplied arms for the ship von Steuben eventually sailed on, and Claude Louis, Comte de Saint-Germain, the minister of war under Louis XVI. What the letter didn’t mention was that he was about to be arrested and appear before judges in France.

“It has come to me from different sources that M. de Steuben is accused of having taken familiarities with young boys, which the laws forbid and punish severely. I have even been informed that that is the reason why M. de Steuben was obliged to leave Hechingen and that the clergy of your country intend to prosecute him by law as soon as he may establish himself anywhere.”

Washington rewarded von Steuben with a house at Valley Forge, which he shared with his aide-de-camps Capt. William North and Gen. Benjamin Walker. Walker lived with him through the remainder of his life, and von Steuben, who neither married nor denied any of the allegations of homosexuality, left his estate to North and Walker. His last will and testament has been described as a love letter to Walk and has been purported to describe their “extraordinarily intense emotional relationship,”.

Adding to that were the constant rumors about his sexuality, which by 1790, reached one of the revolution’s first families, the Adamses of Massachusetts.

Charles, the son of John and Abigail Adams- was what today would be called the black sheep of the family. His biggest problem was alcoholism but, as revealed in letters among the various members of the family, the Adamses had other concerns.

“There are references to [Charles’] alleged proclivity for consorting with men whom his parents regarded as unsavory.” One of these men was von Steuben. Charles had become infatuated with and adored Von Steuben. It is clear from the family letters that the Adamses were concerned about a relationship between Charles and the baron. Von Steuben’s sexuality was an open secret, one that he himself never challenged, other than to ask Washington to defend his moral character. But John Mulligan another one of Baron von Steuben’s “boys” was extremely close with Charles.

It was von Steuben, a gay man, who played a giant role in not only the creation of American military, but the idea of military academies, a standing Army and even veterans organizations. As said by many: if George Washington was the father of the nation, then von Steuben, a gay man, was the father of the United States military.
