Sometimes you have to see discourse and go âwow, so you donât understand the character or the materialâ and then leave. For your own mental state.

Look! Up on the blog! Itâs a novel! Itâs a poem! No - itâs a new SOC Original!
Anyone who knows anything about my writing knows that the one thing I love to write, more than anything else in the whole world, is characters with superpowers. Why? I donât know. It might be my childhood obsession with X-men: Evolution, or my subsequent obsessions with Static Shock, Batman: Beyond, the Justice League, or any other number of cartoon superhero shows. I started writing about superheroes when I was twelve years old, and I have never gone back.
Of course, writing about superheroes (and supervillains!) for over fourteen years teaches you a few things about how to write superpowers - and how not to. A few people have requested that I make a post about what to keep in mind when writing about superpowers, so here it is!
First of all, when youâre writing a character with superpowers, ignore anyone who says that if you give your character the same powers as another character youâre cheating, being uncreative, or whatever else. Listen, thereâs nothing you can write that hasnât been written, or at least there isnât much. What counts isnât the powers, itâs how your specific character chooses to use them! Just because you have a character who is super strong and who can fly doesnât mean that youâre writing Superman - maybe your character isnât quite as âGoodâ or as law-abiding as Superman, or maybe your character is afraid of their own strength and chooses not to use it at all, or maybe they just donât have a lot of control. Thereâs a lot of wiggle room, so donât be afraid to wiggle!
Second, when you give your character superpowers, give them limitations or drawbacks. These donât have to be directly connected to their powers - they can be a part of your characterâs personality instead. For example, I have a character who can unleash devastating amounts of telekinetic force, but she chooses to suppress her abilities instead of using them because sheâs afraid that sheâll hurt someone - a fear that stems from her past, where she might have accidentally killed someone with her powers. Her fear of her own strength is a limitation on that strength and on her willingness to use it. You can also take this in the other direction and have a character who is so confident that they are helping that they end up doing more harm than good, or a character who so firmly believes that their powers are the answer to all of their problems that they completely miss the simpler solution. There are lots and lots of ways you can do this!
Another thing to think about, though, is powers-specific disadvantages. Yes, we all know the âMan of Steel, Woman of Kleenexâ trope/joke, but honestly, most superpowers have some kind of drawback associated with them, especially when they first manifest. If your character is a telepath who doesnât have great control over their telepathy, they might hear things in other peoplesâ heads that they wish they hadnât, or they might get overwhelmed by the amount of mental ânoiseâ around them. An empath could be overloaded by other peoplesâ emotions, especially in a crowd, and a pyrokinetic always has to worry about starting accidental fires, of course. Figure out what kind of trouble your characterâs powers cause for them. This can also be a list of âsuperpower consâ - reasons why your character might want to give up their powers.
That leads me to my next point - figure out how your character feels about their powers! Are they afraid of them? Are they awed? Do they think their powers are super cool, or are they angry that they can no longer lead a normal life? Do they think they need help learning how to deal with them?
In the same vein, figure out who your character can tell about their abilities - every hero needs someone they can trust enough to be their true selves with. Itâs not good for people, psychologically, to have to wear a mask all the time, even if the mask is invisible. Your hero needs someone they can turn to in times of sorrow or doubt, whether thatâs a friend or a sibling or a parent or a butler.
Your superpowered character needs to have a life outside of their superpowers, but their superpowers should affect that life, too. What I mean is that there are some things that canât be separated from who we are as people, and superpowers fall into that category. Your psychic character wonât only have migraines when theyâre wearing the mask. Your superstrong character doesnât only have superstrength when theyâre wearing tights. They still have lives and families and jobs and things that they have to do that donât involve stopping (or starting) the latest crime wave, but their powers donât go away. Show your readers the impact that has on them.
And, last of all, when youâre writing a superpowered character, think about what drives them. Think about what their morality is, and think about their motivation, and think about how that affects the choices they make with and without their powers. Donât be afraid of the gray areas - sometimes thatâs where the most interesting stories happen, in the struggle between what a character wants to do and what they know they have to do.
I hope this helps you out when youâre writing your superpowered characters. Good luck!

To attract the best version of yourself, and to center yourself in preparation for future blessings.Â
Anywhere between 45 minutes to 1 hour: depending on your preferred bathing time.Â
This spell uses bay leaves, if you are allergic to any of the materials I encourage you to replace the materials with ones that represent the same meanings as the originals. Please do not place yourself in harmâs way to complete this spell the way I have it written, the Craft is different to each of us, and should be explored in accordance with our own magic and not the magic of another.
2-3 Bay Leaves: representing protection, boosting, prophecy, purification, defense. In this spell representing seeing your future self, the self you desire to be currently.
Vanilla Scented Candle or Tea Light: representing healing, protection, harmony, unity. In this spell representing centering yourself to accept the changes ahead.
Fire/Flame:Â representing empowerment, enlightenment, comfort, rebirth, inspiration, illumination, hearth and heart, manifestation. In this spell representing finding your shadow self where it is now in the darkness, and bringing it back into the light.
Quartz: representing clarity, cleansing, healing, purification, and inner peace, enhancement, amplification. In this spell representing protecting yourself from negative energies around you that may be blocking your aura from reaching itâs full potential.
Bundle of Palo Santo/Sage: representing cleansing. In this spell being used to cleanse the energy of the water, as well as your own energy to prepare it to be reimbued with new purpose.
Run the bath to desired fullness and temperature. You should be able to at least submerge yourself mostly in the water, it is okay if you cannot fully submerge all parts of your body as most standard tub sizes are quite small.
Gather all your materials close to the bathtub with you, but do not yet get into the water. Once all your materials are gathered, disrobe before beginning the spell.Â
This spell is incantation-based, and you will need to cast it with intentions in mind, as well as in order by incantation.Â
Begin reciting the incantation all the way through without interruption, first in English, then again once more in Latin. Both versions are included below these steps.
When following the incantation the physical steps done in time with the recitation should be as followsâ
- Crumple the bay leaves. Sprinkle them clockwise into the water of the bath. Do not stir it. If your drainage system is poor or if you are uncomfortable with bathing with the herbs later, feel free to simply place them in a sachet and stir the tub with the sachet before leaving it in the tub for the rest of the spell.
- Light the Palo Santo/Sage. Use the lit Palo Santo to first cleanse yourself. Everyone does cleansing a little differently in accordance with their practice, but if looking for inspiration: I cleanse by first running the lit bundle across my whole body and then drawing the sign of Lilith on my abdomen in smoke. Then proceed to cleanse the water by tracing the outline of the tub in a clockwise fashion as many times as feels best to you.
- Light the Vanilla Candle. Place the candle on the side of the tub where your head would rest, but do not enter the water yet.
- Pick up the Quartz and hold it in your dominant hand, place your closed fist over your heart, and begin stirring the tub clockwise with your non-dominant hand. Continue to stir the tub holding the quartz against yourself until you have fully finished reciting both the English and the Latin versions of the incantations.
- Once you have finished the reciting portion of the spell, step into and submerge yourself in the water, make sure to get every piece of your body covered even if not all at the same time. For example, splashing water up onto your arms and back, or laying down briefly to dip your head into the water. Leave the candle burning until it either burns down, or you are finished with your bath, in which case please gently snuff it out.
- When getting out of the bath, stand up, and before stepping out or beginning to drain the water, close out the spell. You can do this in any way you please, so long as the meaning is the ending of your casting. Many people choose to say âamenâ, âthank youâ, or may also choose to praise a chosen god/goddess/spirit guide for closing a cast. I personally do not have a token deity in my practice, so I close my spells with the simple âSo Mote it Beâ.
English Version:
In waterâs mirror, I am found.
Floating as leaves towards my true self.
The smoke and scent draw me in,
To clean and steady my soul against the winds.
There I am amongst the ashes,
Safe & Sound in crystal crevices.
Latin Version:
In speculo aquarum invenior.
Flocci versus mei vero.
Fumus et odor trahunt me,
Ut emundare et stabilive contra ventos animam meam.
Ibi sum inter cineres,
Incolumis in crystallis cavernis.Â
( ⥠) get off your damn phone and get on with the game.
- you spend your whole day lying on the bed, scrolling through manifestation pages, in hope to find a 'method' that works for you or to give you 'hope' through success stories or to make you feel good about yourself or maybe to learn how to manifest 'correctly' or whatever might be the reason.
well guess what? you DON'T need 893727 methods to manifest, you were BORN with that in you.
wanna know how to manifest? tell yourself what YOU want to hear.
( ⥠) manifestation is your very nature, you were born with the ability to manifest and you've been using it unconsciously ( default manifestation ) and consciously ( deliberate manifestation ) ever since you were a child. you think you can't manifest? you've been doing that your WHOLE life hun-
stop trying to find 'methods' because there is no correct way to manifest, you set the rules and you create the limits
you don't need to read 1426295 neville books to learn how to manifest, it is your very nature <3
so my only tip for you is to stop scrolling through manifestation success stories, methods, motivational posts etc., and start applying what you already know :D
and remember: if you can imagine it then you can have it
