I've been breakin' hearts a long time
look not to be heterophobic but there’s no way a straight person could write folklore
‘kay i guess it’s time to share my interpretation of betty bc the straights are causing a ruckus. james is not a boy and james did not cheat. james is a teenage lesbian whomst is secretly in love with her best friend, betty. (obviously the angsty secret feelings are hella mutual) james is too scared to shoot her shot with betty, but they’re really starting to connect and they’re on the brink of something romantic. then the dance rolls around. james shows up with her high heels on cobblestone, psyching herself up to ask betty to dance, to make a move. but then she sees betty dancing with some guy and, understandably, she’s hurt and heartbroken. she leaves the dance feeling the embarrassment and hopelessness of being in love with a girl who you think has chosen a dumb boy over you. as she’s walking home, her friend “august” pulls up and offers james a ride and a talk. they bond over james’s failed crush on betty and become really close really fast. “those days turned into nights” implies that the intentions weren’t originally romantic, but when you’re gay and young and trying to bury feelings for a girl who likes someone else…..things happen, you know i mean? days do indeed turn into nights. when betty hears - from inez, the untrustworthy dramastarter who actually has a heart of gold in there somewhere - that james is gettin it on with august, she’s now feeling how james was at the dance. james is ghosting her and there’s this huge misunderstanding. it’s an acutely sapphic mess. james daydreaming about apologizing to betty is literally as gay as it gets. “would you kiss me on the porch in front of all your stupid friends?!” is saying, will you love me enough to be brave? to proudly be with me, even though it might mean losing some homophobic, small minded people you’re close to?
james isn’t saying “betty, i cheated on you, lol sry…wanna makeout?” it’s james saying “betty, i love you. for a long time i was scared of that and of telling you how i felt. i hurt you with my dishonesty and my silence. i made you question our relationship and yourself because i didn’t have the courage to tell you this before. i’m sorry that i spent the summer with another girl. i thought i could make those feelings go away, but you can’t seem to stop taking my breath away. will you please give me a second chance? this time i’ll be braver. i swear it, betty. but if i ruined it forever, if you need to tell me to go f*ck myself…i’ll respect that, too.”
or at least that’s my take on it.
Genuine question, but could TN actually help/what could they do in this circumstance? I hope something is addressed though (especially since we do know Taylor supports the community) And actually is there anything we can do to help too?
Yes I do truly believe they could help by at the very bare minimum making a statement about it, something along the lines of “Taylor Swift and our community do not stand for bigotry or discrimination of any kind. It has been brought to our attention that some of our LGBTQ+ fans have been doxxed and outed on social media platforms recently. Not only do we want to make it explicitly clear that this is not acceptable, but we will also be providing support to ensure that these culprits are reported and any necessary further action is taken. We stand with our LGBTQ+ fans and the broader LGBTQ+ community as a whole, and we will do everything in our power to protect every member of our community.”
Frankly this is something that has been festering for a long time, the violent homophobia and transphobia in this fandom has been waiting just under the surface. And the whole situation with the song Betty was just the spark that lit the fuse. This is something that has needed to be addressed for a LONG time and it hasn’t ever really been fully addressed. Taylor has been vocal about her support for the LGBTQ+ community, but the internal fandom homophobia and transphobia really has not been addressed. And it fucking needs to be.
@taylornation @taylorswift
we don’t need a hundred posts from the fandom listing reasons why you shouldn’t doxx and out someone and why it’s fucked up to do. what we need is a heavily homophobic and specifically lesbophobic fandom to realize everything they have done to contribute to what’s happening right now. any post you’ve ever made or reblogged or liked about how it’s gross for sapphics to speculate about taylor’s sexuality or to read her music as gay, any post you made joking about how you don’t hate the gays you just hate kaylors (who are mainly sapphics), any post about how it’s an invasion of privacy or disgusting or uncomfortable or projecting to speculate if taylor is part of the lgbtq+ community, any post that targets and alienates and isolates lgbtq+ fans is what allowed this to happen. doxxing and outing is not the first time this has happened in this fandom and it sadly will not be the last. if you’ve ever supported the posts that contributed to this culture that makes sapphics, minors and adults alike, a target of hate and violence, if you’ve ever thought it would be fun to make an anti kaylor blog and spend your free time screenshotting and publicly making fun of queer fans, if you’ve ever followed an anti kaylor/gaylor blog and read their posts for fun, if you’ve ever logged in to hate-read posts from kaylors and privately make fun of them in groupchats with your homophobic friends, if you’ve ever posted things like ‘why can’t kaylors just all die,’ if you’ve ever made tasteless jokes and laughed at our expense on your blog, you contributed to minors being outed, poc being outed, sapphics in countries where it’s not safe to be gay being outed.
you’ve contributed, whether you think you have or not. we’re telling you that you have and you continue to and i hope the guilt of this eats you alive. i hope the idea of your homophobic posts leading to real people being outed haunts you. and don’t think you’re innocent if you’re just some blog who has never *really* said anything *too* bad. if you’ve ever made a complete mockery of kaylors/gaylors just because you’re uncomfortable with the idea of taylor being with women, you contributed to this culture that makes other people think it’s okay to go to the extreme lengths of outing someone. you are fucking responsible. and who are the ones who have to pay the price for your reckless and dangerous homophobia you’ve been perpetuating in this fandom? it’s the lgbtq+ fans erasing their social media (the only safe space they had to talk about being lgbtq+) and running for the hills and fearing for their safety and their lives all while you all are posting photos of the folklore photoshoot and talking about how pretty taylor is.
your homophobia has lead to real people being outed to their families and friends. you, yes, you. and the best you can do is say “it’s bad to out people!! friendly reminder!!!” as if everything you’ve been posting for the past six years since taylor joined tumblr has not contributed to letting people think it’s okay to out someone. i’ve been watching people be outed and threatened for five years, it’s happened to me, it’s terrifying and there’s nothing we can do to stop it. don’t write panic posts about how it’s awful to doxx and out people. instead step back and evaluate who the fuck you are as a person, what you can do to remove all of your homophobic microaggressions from this fandom, and why you think real people being outed is proper retribution for them thinking taylor swift might be gay.
it’s a love story
