Hi Bruna I've just read your latest kenej fic (hope I spelt that right lol) and now I really, really need to know what kaz's surprise is!! Anyway as usual I love your writing, keep up the good work!đ„°đ
Thank you, my lovely!!Â

Inej Ghafa is not a fan of surprises
and more than that: she doesnât like to be kept waiting
sheâs an impatient one, the Wraith
and Kaz knows it
âWhy do you insist on teasing me?â she asks him on their journey back home, frowning to herself
âAre you pouting at me, Wraith?â
a roll of her eyes is all she received
you know what? Inej doesnât think she likes this version of Kaz anymore
indeed, she tells him just that
âOh no,â Kaz drawls, looking over at her. âWhat will I do with my broken heart now?â
âYou are terrible.â
he truly is
and he grins like he knows
like it pleases him that she knows it as well
the farm isnât so differentÂ
heâd stuffed down memories, hidden them in depths of his mind that heâd rarely allowed himself to go to years before
memories of green fields and the stream behind it, where Jordie and him used to bathe in summer days - days he almost didnât remember, and were now only hazy memories, filled with smoke
sometimes Kaz thinks he mightâve dreamed those images
his brotherâs smile as he tried to catch salmon with his bare hands
his father calling them back home as the sun set
Kaz imagined that if heâd had a mother, sheâd be calling him too
and heâd run into her arms
Kazâs memories took him back to cold nights by the fire - the beautiful hearth that his father had built with his bare hands, and that Kaz had fixed all on his own
he hadnât allowed anyone to touch that particular place of the house - it had been his to fix
he remembered cats and dogs running around, chasing each other, and Kaz chasing them, bruising his kneesÂ
at last, when they arrive, Inej is jumpingÂ
he smirks down at her, taking her hand in his
his limp is worse today - much worse, and Inej noticesÂ
she holds his arm, and he can feel her balance him, even if she is barely doing it
Inej is very subtle in helping him, thatâs something he noticed over the years
âWhere is it?â
âWhat is?â
âMy surprise,â she says as she helps him up the porch stairs
Kaz snorts on a laugh. âYou really donât like waiting for things, do you, Inej?â
âTell me.â
âFor the hundreth time: I am not telling you.â
âWhat is it,â she insisted, watching him. âWhat is it, what is it, what-â
âNo.â
Inej sighs. âIf we ever have a child, I swear heâll take after you in that department.â
and without another word, she walks inside the house
but Kaz pauses on the doorway
the words did something to him
he knew she thought nothing of what she said but-
Kazâs eyes stray to that fireplace - hazy memories of his father there
suddenly the picture of him and his own son there glued to his mind
and Inej, there, too
her arms around them both-
âKaz?â Inej calls
shaking his head to himself, Kaz enters the house
âHe should be here any minute.â
Inej doesnât know if she should grin or be frightened
so her face contorts into something in between
âWho?â She begs
Kaz smiles
she steps into his space. âTell me.â
âThatâs not going to work.â
her eyes trace the line of his jaw, the scar in between his lips and his chin
the strong eyebrows, and his dark eyes
âStop it,â he snarls, and moves away from her
Inej smiles. âI just looked at you.â
âExactly.â
she looks triumphant
suddenly, Kaz looks over his shoulder - to the door he left open
to the figure now walking towards the house
and then-
Inej gasps
not at the girl-
but at what she brings, leashed and golden and furry
âNo, you did not.â
âI did,â he grins
âIâm going to cry,â Inej breathes
âI was prepared for it.â
Inej and Kaz step onto the porch
and sure enough-
the girl smiles and waves, a close neighbour, for the looks of her, and beside her is a very enthusiastic little boy, waving his tail when he sees Kaz and Inej, his tongue lapping out of his mouth
Inej is speechless
âHeâs yours,â Kaz tells her. âIf you want him.â
âShut up, Kaz,â Inej breathes, and takes a step closer
the girl says, âHeâs just turned two months old.â
âOh, beautiful Saints,â Inej whispers, and real tears formed in her eyes as the puppy came right onto her, trying to leap into her arms. âI love him.â
the girl smiles, and Kaz gives her a nod of thanks
âHeâs really ours?â Inej says, looking over her shoulder at Kaz
Kaz can only nod
watching her
thereâs an odd feeling in his face - he can only guess his cheeks are hurting from smile
when the girl leaves, Inej sits on the grass, and the puppy takes the chance to lick her hands, her face
Inej is laughing, wrapping her arms around him
Kaz says softly, âDo you like it, Inej?â
âI canât believe youâd do this,â she tells him as Kaz comes closer, watching her. âI mentioned this months and months ago. We were not even married then.â
âThe day I proposed,â Kaz says. âI remember your exact words. How you would one day get a dog. That it was another wish you would give in to.âÂ
she looks at him with a sort of amazement. âOf course you remember.â
Kaz tentatively sits down on the grass with her, cane by his side, and yelps when the puppy jumps into his lap
Kaz pushes his face away when he tries to lick his face, but gives him a few tentative pats on the head, and the puppy is all too happy to lie there, eyes closed, mouth opened, as if heâs smiling
Inej leans in, and kisses Kazâs cheek. âI love you.â
âIs that meant for him?â Kaz taunts
âFor you,â Inej smiles softly. âFor you, Kaz.â
Kaz looks over her, their lips so close
he leans in, but the puppy jumps up, breaking them apart, and Kaz holds him in his arms, letting out a little laugh that Inej clung to
she adored to see Kazâs face like this
she says, âI might not like surprises. But I might make an exception for yours now.â

I REQUEST MORE OF THE FOUND FAMILY STUFF
Yes! More found family stuff for you! Love you, friendship! And I love this family so much!!! :D
Jerza + Wendy: Found Family
Father-Daughter Dance:
âNow that weâre done with that job we can stay for the festival, right?â Wendy gasped, clasping her hands together. Around the three mages, the town was preparing for a big festival for the following day. Jellal glanced over at Erza who nodded with a small smile.
âWell,â he said, scratching the back of his head as they moved on towards their little inn. âI donât see why not.â
âI heard theyâll have really good desserts,â Erza said, taking Jellalâs hand in hers. Jellal entwined their fingers offering her a smile.
âI heard they have dancing!â Wendy beamed. Around them lights and garlands were being strung up. Tomorrow the town would look completely different. âAnd maybe Iâll find someone to talk to! My favorite part of jobs out of town is meeting new people. Itâs always good to make new friends!â She skipped ahead of them. Erza leaned against Jellalâs arm.
âAre you going to tell her?â She smiled.
âTell her what?â He sighed, âThat I⊠I care about her like she was my own daughter?â
âYes,â Erza nodded. âExactly that. You know Iâve said it. I think itâs your turn.â
âYou know I feel that way, but itâs not that easy. What if⊠what if she doesnât feel that way at all? What if Iâm just like some guy orâŠ?â
âJellal,â Erza laughed. âI promise⊠youâre not just âsome guy.ââ Her expression softened, and Jellal leaned in close to brush a kiss to her lips. âYouâre going to put it off again, arenât you?â She smiled. He didnât respond.
***
âAh! The lights are so pretty!â Wendy gasped. It was only sunset, but the streets were already brightly lit with all the decorative lights. Food stands and market stalls filled one street, games in another, and down in the square were dozens of dancers. It reminded her some of the festivals in Magnolia. There were some girls that looked about Wendyâs age at the edge of the suare where all the dancing was taking place. A live band was to the side, under the eaves of the old inn. Wendy made her way to where the girls stood. One was blonde, the other with dark red hairâwhich made Wendy think of Erza. As she approached, the blonde haired girl looked up.
âYouâre the wizard girl,â she said.
     âYes!â Wendy beamed, âIâm Wenââ
âWe know,â the red haired girl shrugged, crossing her arms. âWhat kind of girl your age joins a wizard guild anyways?â
âMy mother says guilds are for drunk men and girls with nothing good to do.â
âThatâs not true!â Wendy gasped, âMy guild is like family!â
âWhy?â The girl with blonde hair scoffed, âDonât you have a real family?â
A real family? Wendyâs heart dropped. Like⊠a mom and a dad? She wished she did have that. Grandeeney had always been like a mother to her, but she had been gone for a long time now and⊠A thought crossed Wendyâs mind. Erza. But she shook it away. âThe guild is my family!â She protested.
The girls laughed. âYouâre an orphan? Did your parents abandon you?â
âYou werenât good enough for them?!â
Wendy felt tears welling up in her eyes. Why were they being so cruel?! The announcer near the musicians was announcing a new dance.
âThe father-daughter dance!â The blonde girl gasped, clapping her hands. âWe should find our dads!â
âThe other girl glanced over at Wendy, âYou should find yours too! Oh⊠waitâŠâ she burst into giggles again, but her laughter was suddenly interrupted by a familiar voiceâdripping with rageâas someone stepped into view out of the corner of Wendyâs eyes.
âHer father is right here.â Her eyes shot up to see him: Jellal! Her heart grew lighter as  he rested a hand on her shoulder. The mage looked furious, with such fire in his expression that the two girls stumbled backwards and then ran without so much as another question. âWendy?â Jellal crouched down to meet her eyes, âAre you alright?â
She nodded. What did he say? Had he said he was her father? It was just to get the girls to leave me alone.
âI was just coming to find you when I heard the announcement,â he smiled a little, around them the music was starting again. âI was wondering if you⊠wanted to danceâŠâ She felt tears welling up in her eyes.
âYes!â She smiled, beaming up at him. He gently pulled her out to the dance floor, holding both her hands. He spun her around once or twice and she found herself laughing, her tears finally gone. But before the dance had ended Jellal paused, letting out a sigh, his smile disappearing.
âWendy,â he said, letting out a deep sigh.
     âWhatâs wrong?â
âI want you to know thatâŠâ he took in a breath, âI was serious about what I said to those girls.â
âAboutâŠâ she frowned, trying to process it. âAboutâŠ?â She felt tears filling her eyes again. About being my father?
âYouâre⊠youâre like a daughter to meâŠâ She couldnât help herself. She burst into tears. Jellal was completely bewildered. âI⊠Iâm sorry⊠I oversteppedâŠâ Wendy threw her arms around his middle, sobbing into his coat.
âNo!â she gasped, hugging him as tight as she could. âIâve never had a dad and⊠If I were to choose one, you would be it.â Jellal crouched down pulling her tight into his embrace. She clutched his coat. Beside them someone else stood, resting her hand gently on Jellalâs shoulder.
âIs everything alright?â Erza whispered. Wendy glanced up, grabbing Erzaâs hand and pulling her down so she could hug them both.
âI just love my family,â she sobbed. âI love you both so much.â
Thanks for reading!Â
Buy me a coffee? :)Â
Anyways. This short fic was inspired by this little bit from the anime because theyâre totally a family. *sob*Â
Nightmares     Â
âAre you awake?â Erza whispered, twirling her fingers through Jellalâs hair. It was a hot, muggy night. Jellal had passed out hours ago, arms wrapped around her hips, head resting against her belly. She traced her finger down the scars across his bare back. âHow are you even asleep?â She smiled as her husbandâs grip around her tightened.
ââm not,â he mumbled, his lips moving against the fabric of her shirt. âToo hot.â
âIt might be cooler if you let go,â Erza said, running her fingers through his hair again. He groaned.
     âNever.â
âAt least come closer,â she whispered. Jellal sat up, his hair a mess, his eyes shimmering in the pale moonlight streaming in from the window. He smiled. Erza shook her head and grabbed his arm, pulling him down to kiss him. He sighed against her lips, brushing her red hair away from her eyes, and then kissed her again.
Then he groaned. âItâs too hot,â and flopped back over onto his side of the bed. Erza turned to tease him, but the moment she did there was a scream from across the hall.
âWendy,â Jellal whispered, his eyes wide. He was out of bed before Erza could even respond. It had been a while since she had had a nightmare. Jellal yanked on his t-shirt and was striding across the hall before Erza even had time to react.
Since Erza and Jellalâs wedding, Erza had noticed Jellal was closer than ever to Wendy. She had, for some time now, thought of Wendy as her daughter. And Jellal, when Jellal and Erza had finally started dating, she knew he felt the same way. She almost smiled about it as she threw her blankets aside and pulled herself out of bed. Wendy could ask Jellal for anything and heâd give it to her. Such a pushover.
On the other side of the hall Wendy was still screaming: âHeâs coming! Heâs coming!â They were familiar words. Erza had heard her scream the same ones every night for weeks after Acnologia. Now⊠every so often the same nightmare came back. Erzaâs heart hurt everytime she heard Wendy scream in her sleep. She saw some things⊠some things that no little girl should ever have to see. And then she paused in her doorway, clutching the doorframe till her knuckles turned white. No. She saw some things that no one should ever have to see.
Erza sighed, padding barefoot out into the hallway. Light streamed out from Wendyâs room, and she could hear soft murmuring. Jellal whispering over and over, âItâs okay. Itâs okay. It was just a dream.â Erza could hear Wendy sobbing. She gently pushed the door open to see Jellal kneeling by Wendyâs bed. Wendy was still sitting on her mattress but was practically buried in Jellalâs armsâsobbing into his shirtâclutching at him like she still couldnât quite believe that she was safe. Jellal glanced up at Erza, offering her a worried smile. Itâs okay. Sheâs okay.
She was calming down, her trembling slowly dying away, her breath coming in gasps. âIâm⊠Iâm sorry. Iâm so sorry.â She breathed. Jellal looked bewildered.
     âWhatâŠ?â
âI wake you so muchâŠâ she whispered, pulling away from his embrace, rubbing away her tears with her hands. âAnd theyâre just dreams.â
âWendy.â Erza said, sitting down next to her on her bed. âYouâre right. Theyâre just dreams. But you should never apologize. Jellal and I, we have nightmares too. And we wake each other up. Weâre there for each other. And we want to always be there for youâwhen you need us.â
Wendy stared up at Erza for a long moment, and then tears welled up in her eyes. âPromise?â
âOf course,â Jellal frowned, âAlways.â Wendy pulled them both into a hug.
     âThank you.â
âI have an idea,â Erza declared. âIâm going to make some hot chocolate. Weâll all have some together, and then lets try and get some sleep. This time weâll have good dreams.â
Wendy laughed a little, wiping the last evidence of tears away from her eyelashes. She beamed up at both of them as they stood. âAlright, can I help?â
âSure,â Erza smiled, pulling her up to her feet. âYou find the hot chocolate mix. Iâll heat up the water. Deal?â
     âDeal.â

[x][x] IMAGINE BEING KAZ'S LITTLE SISTER WHO HE TAKES CARE OF IN SECRET AND THE CROWS FIND OUT ABOUT YOU.
requested by anon
(Also contains Kanej/Kaz x Inej because jealousy is a good plotline + because originally, this was meant to be a oneshot but I couldn't make up enough content from a vague prompt)
--
There were a lot of things Kaz Brekker had left behind from his past. His name, his brother, feelings, kindness. But you weren't one of them. You were among the only things he had kept, and the only thing that had changed in between you was that he no longer could hug you or show you any physical affection. He hadn't told you the whole story about being the Bastard of the Barrel or Dirtyhands, and he made sure you wouldn't find out about who he truly was when he left your little home. You knew he ran a criminal gang and did heists, but you had still mostly a kind and loving picture of him, he didn't want it to be shattered by telling you what he had done to get revenge for Jordie and in a way, you. If Pekka hadn't taken all your money all those years ago, you would still be a happy family and Kaz wouldn't have to hide you.
You were the only one who remembered the time when he was just that sweet little boy who always protected you. The whole thing with Pekka and Jordie had scarred him for life, and for a long time, you were the only one he found a family within, who he cared about. You had changed your name too to protect yourself and lived in a nice house at the better side of Ketterdam. Kaz visited you late at night two times a week, and extra times if you needed it. You lived at the quietest part of the better area, but visiting you in broad daylight would have been far too dangerous, and Kaz wouldnât do it unless it would be an extreme emergency. Fortunately that kind of a situation had never occurred.
He had made it clear years ago that you canât come with him to the Barrel. He knew it would be dangerous for you - if anyone got to know that Dirtyhands had a sister⊠Kaz didnât even want to imagine what could happen then. He had buried his feelings long ago, but with you he let Kaz Rietveld peek around the corner. You made him black coffee, and your way was Kazâs favorite. He didnât exactly know what you did with the coffee or if it was just the different type of beans. He stayed at your home for an hour or two at a time, checking everything is okay and just talking about how youâve been. You could open up to him, and when you were sick, he dropped by more often. Kaz knew that there was always a risk of someone seeing him visiting you regularly, but he trusted he was being careful.
But the Crows had gotten curious about where Kaz disappeared at night. At first, Jesper was suspecting Kaz had a hidden partner, but he also saw the different closeness between him and Inej and had also suspected Kaz having a crush on her for years, so if he had a hidden partner... it wouldn't make really sense. Kaz wasn't a player, he fought with feelings overall so it felt unlikely that he'd have so strong feelings for two people.
So Jesper talked Inej into following Kaz, claiming that he still thinks that Kaz has someone special hidden away. The Suli girl was reluctant, but agreed eventually, she was secretly worried about Kaz having a partner too.
And when she saw Kaz knocking on a door of a small house at the better area of Ketterdam and a woman opened the door with a smile, her heart sank. But she also felt the black cloud of jealousy and the feeling of betrayal coming over. So all the things Kaz had made her read between the lines were either lies or he just wanted to play with her feelings?
But at the same time, her heart told her that Kaz wasn't like that. He wouldn't do that. But she still left the scene, going back to the Slat, holding back angry tears. And once there, she went straight to the bar counter and poured herself a shot, a confused Jesper beside her.
"What happened?" he asked, and Inej glared at him.
"You were right. Kaz has a girlfriend. Or maybe even a wife." she muttered, causing Jesper to frown as Inej downed the shot.
"I didn't say it- I said it just because I knew that it would get you to go check the situation." Jesper told her and from the corner of his eye, he saw Kaz entering the Slat. Inej looked like she wanted to slap the man.
"Storm coming..." Jesper muttered and made sure to keep his eyes on the glass in front of him.
"Why didn't you tell me about her?" Inej asked the man once he came close enough.
"Who?"
"That woman you meet two times a week."
Kaz looked at the Suli girl in visible confusion, but then it dawned to him. "You were following me."
Inej took another step towards Kaz. "I knew you're a liar and a rotten, lost cause but I didn't think you'd spin two women in between your fingers like this." Inej growled. "You know that I have difficulties in trusting people, and then-"
Kaz cut Inej off. "She's my sister."
"Your- what?"
Kaz sighed. "She's my sister. I visit Y/N so I know she's safe. I also give her money so she would manage. I just don't talk about her because she'd be in danger if people knew who she is, and she doesn't know about the Bastard of the Barrel or Dirtyhands and I'd like to keep it that way. And I don't 'spin' anyone in between my fingers, I don't have time for relationships, I thought you knew that."
The anger in Inej's heart subsided quickly and it was replaced with embarrassment. "I'm sorry."
Kaz nodded slowly, sighing again and making his way upstairs. Jesper came to stand beside Inej. "Well. At least you still have your man."

A/N: I know you requested a "fic" and probably waited for a longer piece but as much as I love Kaz, I can't keep breaking my own rules to make all my Kaz pieces long when the request is gif imagine-sized because otherwise I could burn myself out with Kaz because people would always assume long pieces even from the vaguest of requests and that would eventually also mirror itself on other characters I don't crush on. I'm sorry if I've disappointed you by not providing a oneshot.

it didnât matter that he was a year older
she terrified him
not in the way that the kids at school frightened him, not at all
but in a way that made his heart catch in his throat
that made his chest acheÂ
especially now, as he watched her walk the rope that sheâd tied between two thick oak trees, graceful as a bird
ever since they were little, Alf and Liza hadnât missed a single weekend together
they were inseparable
Alf could remember being smaller and running around in Kaz and Inejâs farm, chasing her through wildflowers and trying not to trip on rocks
he could remember feeding the little ducklings at the pond with her
and saving a little bird that had fallen from his nest - how brave sheâd been that day, to climb the tree and place the little one back
âYou should be careful,â he tells her now, watching her and wincing with every step she took
she never fell
or he never saw her fall
at last, Liza jumps to the ground, landing like a cat
she smiles tauntingly, âOne of these days, you have to stop worrying about every little thing.â
she has grass stains all over her dress
and leaves in her black, wild hair
âLet me have my worry,â he says back, crossing his arms
Liza pushes his blond hair away from his eyes and said, âYou worry too much, Alf. One of these days youâre going to get a headache so bad you wonât be able to move. Or youâll grow another brain so this one can rest,â she pokes the center of his forehead and laughs when he pushes her hand away
the summer afternoons are long and lazy, with them lying on the grass and bathing in the pond, catching frogs just to let them go again
now, she falls backwards, spreading her arms over the flowers
she says, staring up at the sky, âPapa is teaching me card tricks.â
Alf lies down next to her, breathing in the summer air. âYeah?â
Liza rises on one elbow and looks at him, âI think Iâm pretty good at it.â
âYou should show me sometimes.â
âI wonder, though, where he learnt it,â she frowns. âPapa is really good at it.â
Alf looks at her. âAsk him.â
âI have,â she says. âBut he always says he learned on his own. He never says anything else.â
âMaybe thatâs all there is.â
âThereâs always more to a story,â Liza murmurs, and lies back down
that makes him think
thatâs what she told him once, one day after school, where sheâd caught him crying after some kid made fun of him
called him Bastard
Alf didnât even know what a bastard was supposed to be then - heâd just thought it to be a rude word you called people that you didnât like
heâd learned over the years what the kid had meant
Alf didnât have a mother - had never met her
his dads had told him the story - how his aunt Inej had rescued his mother in one of her travels, how sheâs given birth to him on that boat, how sheâd passed away right after
theyâd wanted him to know, they said
they told him what his mother had told Inej that day - the day he was born
they told him of his father, a fjerdan on his way to return to his wife, only to be assassinated on the way to their house
that day, Alf had also learned what assassinated meant
thought his dads had put it gently, Alf had always been a smart kid
he read a lot
so he knew that mean people had done terrible things to his biological parents
he also knew that, if it hadnât been for Inej, if it hadnât been for his dads, he probably would never have found himself here - next to Liza, watching the skies, his hair still damp from swimming
Liza had told him, after heâd been angry at the kids for making fun of him, for calling him bastard, âThereâs so much more to you than what they think you are.â
thereâs so much more to a story
Alf guessed it was easy for her to stay that - she was brave, and unrelenting, and didnât care what people thought
ââAre you okay?â She whispers to him now, worried, bringing him back to the present
âYeah,â Alf says. âJust thinking.â
satisfied with that, Liza pats his knee. âIâm going to swim again.â
âIâll be right there,â Alf murmurs
Liza runs to the pond, and flings herself in, dress and all, startling some ducks that lounged on the grass
Alf watches her, sighing quietly to himself
he never thinks about his biological parents much
his dads are all he ever knew
and they are his, entirely his, even if he isnât blood
they are his family
as much as Kaz and Inej aer his family
as much as Nina and Matthias are his family
as much as Liza is, too
she calls for him and he waves at her, smiling, mouthing that heâll be right there
he lies down in the sun for a couple more minutes, thinking
he pities the end his parents got
it unsettles him that there are still people out there that do terrible things to others
it unsettles him even more to know that there are children that will never have his luck
he closes his eyes, trying to push the thoughts away
and then he feels water drip into his face
hovering above him is Liza, smiling down at him
and squeezing the water out of her hair right on top of him
he groans, pushing himself away, âAH! Why would you do that?â
âYou were falling asleep in the sun,â Liza laughs. âLook at you - youâre going to get red all over.â
âHow friendly of you - to warn me with water on my face.â
she smiles, then takes his hand. âThat duckâs been giving me the eye ever since we got here, letâs give him something to talk about to his stupid, snobby friends.â
âDonât make fun of the duck,â he says, glad to be distracted. âPoor thing.â
Liza scoffs, then sits down at the edge of the pond, before diving down again
the duck flutters his wings and walks away
Alf laughs then, shaking his head, sitting down where sheâd previously been, his legs on the water, his shorts wet
she surfaces, then rests a hand on his leg to keep her steady. âYouâre not well today.â
she notices everything
that also terrifies him a bit
âIâm just thoughtful,â he splashes her gently. âLet me be.â
âIâll never let you be,â she shows him her tongue, and he laughs. âTrying to get rid of me will only make me bother you more. Whatâs on your mind?â
Alf sighs softly, âIâll tell you one day.â
Liza rolls her eyes. âTell me tomorrow then. As good a day as any.â
he smiles, watching her swim, opening his mouth to retort-
âLIZA, ALF.â
Alf turns as his uncle limps his way to the porch
âCome back home, dinner is almost ready.â
âWeâre coming, uncle Kaz.â
Liza waves, grinning, and Kaz gives her a smile, gesturing with his head for her to come home. âGet yourselves dry, then come eat.â
Liza gives Alf a secret win. âIâll find out how he knows all those tricks.â
Alf grins. âI suppose you want my help.â
In the kitchen, Inej secretely watches through the window
Kaz comes around, wrapping his arms around Inej from behind her
âDid you see it?â She whispers to him, as Kaz nuzzles his face on her neck
Kaz grins. âSheâs good. Sheâs like you.â
Inej turns to him, biting her lip as if to keep her smile to herself. âCan you believe I taught her that dismount once?â
âI can,â Kaz nods. âSheâs your daughter, of course sheâs good at it.â
Inej smiles. âSheâs her fatherâs daughter, too. I know youâve been teaching her tricks.â
Kazâs chuckle is hoarse and raspy. He says, âSheâs too good. I used to go mad with rage because I had to repeat the motions time and time again, but she...picked it up the first time.â
Inej rests her forehead against his chest, smiling to herself
Kaz holds her, kissing the top of Inejâs head. âEight years ago, I was petrified that I would taint her;â he murmurs, as if heâs speaking to himself. âI thought that, somehow, some of that... darkness would be born in her, too.â Kaz looks out the window thoughtfully, watching as his daughter dances around in the sun. âBut sheâs the sun.â
Inej looks at him, then touches his cheek. âWhat darkness?â
âI-â
âWhat darkness?â She whispers, pulling him down for a kiss
Kaz breathes against her, leaving his cane on the side, his hands touching the counter behind Inej
she pulls back with a smile, then kisses the tip of his nose. âThat is livesâ away. Think only of light, Kaz. That is our life now.â
he nods, speechless, his brow touching hers
the garden door opens, and Liza stands there, making a face, Alf on her heels. âGross,â she tells them both, before making her way to the table
Inej pats Kazâs chest, laughing softly to herself
they share a look, but say nothing as they depart, and join the children at the table.

Hi there! I live for your SoC fics. Youâre such a talented author and I love all of your work. Thanks for everything you do for the fandom! Could you please write something of Kaz playing with Inejâs hair? Thanks so so much đđđ
Hey, lovely! Thank you so much! I hope you donât mind that I mixed your idea with some others, I think they fit quite well.

heâs tired, she can tell
Kaz has the stamina of a hero in a story
but Inej knows that heâs far from invincible
Kaz is human - too human, at times
and she now sees the strain of his shoulders, the tension in his jaw, the dark rings under his eyes
he should be triumphant now, celebrating a job well done
a job they both won
but as he walks beside her along the canals, Inej knows he has not slept for days
heâs limping more
he sees her watching his leg and turns his cane to his other hand
with his other one, he holds hers
gloves on gloves
but still
theyâd gone through so many layers already
Inej looks up at him as they move through the shadows and dark alleys
though they have on ear on the streets, listening for any trouble that might come their way, they allow themselves to pay attention to each other, for just a little while
Inej smiles softly as his fingers slip through hers
a silent reassurance - Iâm fine
she says to him, âI miss home.â
and itâs like someone struck him across the face
Inej raises her brows at the surprise flashing in his eyes
she understands why
Inej believes that Kaz, try as he might, will always have a difficult time trusting when she says that she found home with him - on his fatherâs farm, that they rebuilt together
it stuns him everyday - that thatâs their permanent home now
and that Ketterdam is now just a place they go to not as often
to do their job - what they promised each other they would do
after a moment, Kaz says, âWe can go back tomorrow, if you wish.â
Inej had bought herself a nice little apartment in one of the nice buildings of East Stave
of course, when all her neighbours were concerned, nobody moved there
not that Inej was intent on hiding anymore
she had a reputation
but still - it was nice to be anonymousÂ
it is to that nice little apartment that they walk to now
Kaz stayed every so often
most days, actually
well, most nights
days were busy for the Wraith
but the nights were for both of them
when they get there soon enough, she makes tea, and Kaz stares off into space, leaning against her kitchen counter
Inej pauses what sheâs doing, a spoon of sugar hovering in the air
she tells him, âGo take a bath, Kaz.â she puts the spoon in her mouth. âYou need to relax, and rest.â
heâs silent, his eyes focusing
he doesnât look at her when he says, âTake one with me.â
Inej almost drops her spoon
he looks at her then. âYou asked me back home - if I would ever... if we would ever be capable of it.â He runs his fingers through his hair, looking away as if heâs shy. âWe could try, if youâre alright with it.â
Inej pauses
would she?
Kaz had seen her bare more times that she could count
heâd pushed down her barriers, one by one
not like punching bricks, hoping theyâd come apart eventually
but more like removing satin curtains, pushing them gently out of the way
she did the same for him
but this - this was something that maybe he wouldnât be able to go through
still, Inej nods, and says, âGet the water running. Iâll be right there.â
without another word, he grabs his cane and makes his way to the bathroom
Inej knows that it took Kaz years to be able to bathe in a bathtub
even that was difficult
step by step, brick by brick, he got there
back home, Inej sometimes sat by him in the bath, tea in her hand, chatting with him as he laid there, bubbles on his chin
Inej waited a minute, finishing her tea, and then she trudged to the bathroom, to see him undressing from the doorway
she smiled at the contours of his back, the muscles of his shoulders
âOggling much?â He says over a shoulder
Inej shrugs, turning her eyes to the water filling the bathtub
steam already clung to her brow, to the mirror atop the basin
the last piece he removes before getting in the tub is his gloves
Inej says, âYou have not complained about my oggling since we have been married.â She crosses her arms, leaning against the doorway. âNor before.â
Kaz sinks into the water, watching her with dark eyes. âWho says Iâm complaining?â
âExhaustion makes you cheeky,â Inej points out
Kaz leans back. âYou have not complained about my said cheekiness since we have been married,â he throws back. âNor before.â
âClever,â she taunts
he gives her a too-modest shrug
Inej closes the door to keep the warmth in
she undresses fast, methodically
Kaz is very still
âWe can do this some other time,â she says to him
âItâs fine.â
but she can see the tension in his jawline
Kaz puts his elbows on the edge of the tub, swallowing down, as if bracing himself
he looks conflicted, but-
not afraid
âLet me,â he requests
Inej steps in, and allows him to undo the laces of her pants. âYou know,â Inej begins to say. âI meant what I said back there.â
âYou say a lot of things, treasure, I need you to be clear.â
Inej pulls down her pants, the rest of her clothes
she is bare in front of him without a hint of worry
how long did it take her to get here? so long
how many times would she still succumb to the fear? too many
but it was progress
and she took it gratefully
âWhen I told you I missed home,â Inej says. âI miss the farm.â
she loved the feeling of freedom - the journeys she took through the seas
but she loved to come back home - to him, as well
Kazâs dark eyes flash with emotion, but he says nothing
she can see it though - joy in his eyes
hesitating, Inej steps in
the tub is not huge
she begins by sinking down opposite to him
her legs to her knees
Kaz watches her like heâs trying to think of nothing else but her
âDo you want to try to touch me?â she says
âNot yet.â
âOkay.â
steam curls his hair
Inej leans back, no part of her touching him
she knows that talking is good
for both of them
so she says, âI was thinking...â
âDo tell.â
Inej distracts herself from her aching heart by pulling down on her braid, gently taking it apart
âWe could have the others over one day, if youâd like,â Inej says, trying to weave her fingers through her knots, noticing Kaz watching every move. âThey have yet to see the house.â
Kaz says, âHelvar will be immensily proud of his terrible painting skills.â
âDonât be mean. He was very kind to offer to help us with the fence.â
âIâve never seen so many different shades of white, thatâs what Iâm saying.â
Inej grins, and then laughs at him
the water shakes with her
Kaz finds himself smiling, too
âI guess I can bear their presence,â he says, shrugging
Inej smiles. âYou miss them.â
âI miss you, and Iâm next to you. I donât have energy to miss any of them.â
âHum,â Inej smiles, but she knows better
Kaz goes silent, wary
he says, âI can wash your hair.â
âReally?â
âDoes it bother you?â Kaz murmurs
âIâm not sure, Iâve never had anyone wash my hair besides my mother, and that was a long time ago.â Inej pauses. âIâll turn.â
Kaz nods, and he watches as Inej turns on the tub, still not touching him
though his legs are on either side of her
his knees so pale in comparison to her body
Kaz thinks of warmth
the warmth of her body sleeping next to him on their bed
the sun shining as she smiles when he brings her too-sweet tea in the morning
the gentle way she pushes back his hair from his face as he lies there on the pillow, her legs entwined with his
how different is that from this?
he grabs a bottle of her scented soap
places a small amount on his hands
he says, to take his mind off it, âI might have... something of a surprise when we go back.â
Inej goes very still. âWhat?â
âItâs a surprise, Wraith, thatâs the point.â
âI donât like surprises.â
âYouâll like this one.â
she looks at him over her shoulder, eyes wide. âWill I?â
âWhy are you so suspicious?â
she raises her brows at him
and Kaz lets out a snort
Inej turns back around, but doesnât tell him to get it over with
she waits, patiently, conversing with him like what theyâre doing isnât new. âTell me.â
âI want you expectant,â Kaz tells her, âso no.â
He watches the waves of her long hair
it disappears in the water
Kaz takes in a breath, and gently places his hands at the back of her head, spreading the soap there before massaging her head
Inej doesnât move, but he asks, âInej?â
âIâm enjoying it,â she says, âperhaps a little too much.â
indeed - Inej shows him her arm, and the hair standing up there
âSo you like me running my fingers through your hair,â he says thoughtfully, keeping himself focused on what heâs doing. âNoted.â
âIâd forgotten about it,â Inej says with a hint of sadness
Kaz swallows down, and says, âI like it when you do it to me.â
âI noticed that too.â He can feel her smiling
he grabs a bath cup and says, âTilt your head back.â
she does
Kaz washes her hair slowly, running his fingers through her soft strands, and something like joy makes his heart jump when Inej gives a happy little sigh
âHow is this, Kaz?â She asks seriously
âItâs fine,â he says, surprised at himself. âItâs actually fine.â
she looks over her shoulder. âIâm glad.â
not wishing to push himself or her, Kaz slowly leans in
Inej watches him
and knowing what he intends to do, she tilts her head to the side just slightly, explosing the side of her neck, her shoulder
Kaz takes a breath
how different is it, really?
than kissing the rest of her body?
than slipping his hands underneath her shirt to touch her back?
Kaz leans in, touching his lips to her shoulder
so softly
barely a brush of his lips
soap flurries around her, bubbles popping on her legs
as kaz removes his lips, but keeps himself close, Inej admits, because she know heâll ask, âI like this with you.â
Kaz is silent for a moment watching her
then he softly says, so close she can feel his breath on her ear. âI like you.â
âDo you, now?â
âIâll prove it to you, when we get back home.â
Inej sighs, âAnd I see my surprise?â
âYouâll like it,â he reassures her
Inej couldnât possibly imagine what that was
but still
she touches his chin once, flicks his nose, and moves out of the bath
Kaz watches her as she places a towel around her and begins drying her hair with another. âIs it going to frighten me?â
âWhat could I possibly take out of my pocket that could frighten you, Inej?â
she laughs. âNina dressed as a clown.â
âFuckâs sake.â
she sits on the edge of the tub and flicks his nose again. âTell me.â
Kaz leans back, silent
âYouâre going to make me wait a whole day?â Inej frowns. âWhy did you have to tell me in the first place then? You couldâve just surprised me.â
âMaybe I like ruffling your feathers.â
Inej raises a brow at him. âYou definitely need sleep.â
as Inej goes to her bedroom, laughter follows her - her own, and his
