Anyways. This short fic was inspired by this little bit from the anime because they’re totally a family. *sob*
Nightmares
“Are you awake?” Erza whispered, twirling her fingers through Jellal’s hair. It was a hot, muggy night. Jellal had passed out hours ago, arms wrapped around her hips, head resting against her belly. She traced her finger down the scars across his bare back. “How are you even asleep?” She smiled as her husband’s grip around her tightened.
“’m not,” he mumbled, his lips moving against the fabric of her shirt. “Too hot.”
“It might be cooler if you let go,” Erza said, running her fingers through his hair again. He groaned.
“Never.”
“At least come closer,” she whispered. Jellal sat up, his hair a mess, his eyes shimmering in the pale moonlight streaming in from the window. He smiled. Erza shook her head and grabbed his arm, pulling him down to kiss him. He sighed against her lips, brushing her red hair away from her eyes, and then kissed her again.
Then he groaned. “It’s too hot,” and flopped back over onto his side of the bed. Erza turned to tease him, but the moment she did there was a scream from across the hall.
“Wendy,” Jellal whispered, his eyes wide. He was out of bed before Erza could even respond. It had been a while since she had had a nightmare. Jellal yanked on his t-shirt and was striding across the hall before Erza even had time to react.
Since Erza and Jellal’s wedding, Erza had noticed Jellal was closer than ever to Wendy. She had, for some time now, thought of Wendy as her daughter. And Jellal, when Jellal and Erza had finally started dating, she knew he felt the same way. She almost smiled about it as she threw her blankets aside and pulled herself out of bed. Wendy could ask Jellal for anything and he’d give it to her. Such a pushover.
On the other side of the hall Wendy was still screaming: “He’s coming! He’s coming!” They were familiar words. Erza had heard her scream the same ones every night for weeks after Acnologia. Now… every so often the same nightmare came back. Erza’s heart hurt everytime she heard Wendy scream in her sleep. She saw some things… some things that no little girl should ever have to see. And then she paused in her doorway, clutching the doorframe till her knuckles turned white. No. She saw some things that no one should ever have to see.
Erza sighed, padding barefoot out into the hallway. Light streamed out from Wendy’s room, and she could hear soft murmuring. Jellal whispering over and over, “It’s okay. It’s okay. It was just a dream.” Erza could hear Wendy sobbing. She gently pushed the door open to see Jellal kneeling by Wendy’s bed. Wendy was still sitting on her mattress but was practically buried in Jellal’s arms—sobbing into his shirt—clutching at him like she still couldn’t quite believe that she was safe. Jellal glanced up at Erza, offering her a worried smile. It’s okay. She’s okay.
She was calming down, her trembling slowly dying away, her breath coming in gasps. “I’m… I’m sorry. I’m so sorry.” She breathed. Jellal looked bewildered.
“What…?”
“I wake you so much…” she whispered, pulling away from his embrace, rubbing away her tears with her hands. “And they’re just dreams.”
“Wendy.” Erza said, sitting down next to her on her bed. “You’re right. They’re just dreams. But you should never apologize. Jellal and I, we have nightmares too. And we wake each other up. We’re there for each other. And we want to always be there for you—when you need us.”
Wendy stared up at Erza for a long moment, and then tears welled up in her eyes. “Promise?”
“Of course,” Jellal frowned, “Always.” Wendy pulled them both into a hug.
“Thank you.”
“I have an idea,” Erza declared. “I’m going to make some hot chocolate. We’ll all have some together, and then lets try and get some sleep. This time we’ll have good dreams.”
Wendy laughed a little, wiping the last evidence of tears away from her eyelashes. She beamed up at both of them as they stood. “Alright, can I help?”
“Sure,” Erza smiled, pulling her up to her feet. “You find the hot chocolate mix. I’ll heat up the water. Deal?”
“Deal.”

The cold weather called for laziness
Indeed, Inej had become very fond of afternoon naps
When the snow piled around the farm house, and the cold chillded her bones, Inej finished all her correspondence early and, with a cup of tea, made her way to the main room
Where Kaz was putting some logs into the fire
Leaning into his cane
The cold was specially heartless with his leg
Today, she noticed how difficult it was for him to even stand
Inej had a blanket around her shoulders, and their couch was big enough for two
As she laid down on the couch, her empty cup forgotten on the coffee table, she said, "Kaz."
He turned to her
His eyes had a new light to them
She liked that, she liked the light in his eyes
"Inej."
Without words, she held out a hand
A request
Kaz watched her stretch out her arm out of the blanket and realized what she wanted
What they had spent most afternoons doing when they weren't working
Kaz straightened, "I have work to do, still."
"So do I," she challenged
They would never be able to live slowly, not really
They'd grown up in the world where slowing down meant losing their necks
But they were trying
That's why Kaz's face softened, and he slipped into the couch
Inej made space for him, and he laid down, his spine against the back of the the couch, Inej lying down next to him, facing the ceiling
He placed the blanket around them both
And lying with her there, with the fire on, the snow piling outside-
Kaz had never felt peace
Not really
Not like this
This felt awfully close
Inej was smiling up at him, but her eyes were tired
"Are you tired?" He asked, voice softer than his touch
Kaz's voice would always be in between a rasp and a growl - but not here
His voice was hoarse, but gentle
Just for her
Something that took a while to give in to - was exhaustion
For both of them
But Inej threw that out the window and nodded
Kaz was so warm
He wondered how he would ever managed to leave that couch again
Inej touched his forearm, the skin that wasn't covered by his shirt, tracing the hairs there
It made him shiver
Inej stopped and looked up
They had very few reservations with each other, but at times-
Well, trauma would never really leave them
They were a constant work in progress
But Kaz said, "Your fingers are cold."
He took her bare hand in his
"Look at that," she said, looking down at their hands. "The cold-blooded one is the warm one this time."
"I've put my hands near the fire."
"Or maybe it's just my warmth slipping into you."
Kaz breathed a soft laugh at that. "Maybe, Wraith."
Inej smiled, and touched his cheek
He hovered slightly above her, watching her
"You should rest more often," he told her
Inej shook her head, eyes tracing the contours of his lips, his jawline, like many times before
She said, "It'll go away. It's normal - at this stage."
"So early on?"
"Adjustments have to be made," she laughed softly
Kaz looked down, then hesitantly let his hand wonder to her waist
Inej's eyes grew heavier, but she still took his hand, placing it below her bellybutton, on the small, tiny bump there
Kaz's expression was unreadable
One moment he looked thoughful
He didn't pull his hand away
Inej nuzzled against him, and Kaz brought her closer
Her warmth - forever a reminder that it was real, that she was alive, that she was an anchor, and this boat would remain still and steady, not carried off with the current
And his voice - her forever reminder of a life to come
Of wars won
Inej sighed softly against him as Kaz's thumb brushed her belly back and forth
"Sometimes," she begins to confess, "I am so overwhelmed with the fact that... we created life." A pause. Her eyes unfocus. "I took so many lives in the past. And now I have been given one to protect."
Kaz pulled her closer, protectively. "Every life you took - it was either them or you. And I'm more than glad you chose well."
Inej looked up at him
"We wouldn't be here otherwise," he said slowly. "Neither would our child."
Inej's fingers traced his jaw lightly
Kaz closed his eyes
She said, "I love you."
Kaz opened his eyes, looked into her own, before touching his lips to her brow
Inej's eyes fluttered closed
She knew she was falling asleep, but she still heard him, soft, and gentle, against her. "I love you."

Jerza + Wendy: Dad
“Shh…” Erza laughed a little as Jellal leaned over to press a kiss to her cheek. “Shh…! Don’t wake her up!” Wendy was fast asleep, pressed between the two of them on the couch, blanket wrapped snuggly around her shoulders, popcorn bowl set aside on the coffee table.
“She fell asleep during the movie,” Jellal grinned, “I think she’s not going to wake up any time soon.”
“It’s late,” Erza murmured. The TV was glowing in front of them, on the home screen for the film. “We should get her into bed.” Between them, Wendy jerked a little, as if she was dreaming. Erza paused, watching the girl closely. Another nightmare…? She glanced over at Jellal, their eyes met. She could see he was worried as well. Wendy had nightmares every so often. They were always bad. The girl between them let out a whimper—she was afraid. Her eyelids fluttering.
“D-Da…!”
“Wendy!” Erza whispered, “It’s just a dream, dear, wake up!”
“Dad!” Wendy shuddered in her sleep, and then her voice rose to a scream. “Dad! Dad! N-no! Dad!”
“Wendy!” Jellal gently shook the girl’s shoulder, “Wake up! It’s just a dream, it’s just a dream!”
Wendy’s eyes fluttered open. She was only conscious enough to realize she was alright, realize she had been dreaming. “D-dad…” she mumbled, dropping into his arms, “You’re okay… you’re…” she was asleep again before either of them had time to ask her if she was alright.
For a moment the room was silent. Erza’s eyes met Jellal’s and her lips turned up in a bright smile. “Dad.” She mouthed.
Dad? Jellal glanced down at the girl in his arms. Do I… really deserve to be called that? Was she dreaming about someone else…?

When Wendy woke up her body was sore. I had another nightmare. Her body was always sore after the bad ones. She felt guilty. That means Mom and Jellal had to deal with it. Her gut twisted in knots. She hated that. That she was such a burden to them. She hated her nightmares—how she could hardly remember them when she woke, only flashes, and how Erza and Jellal always remembered them and how she screamed for them.
Those nightmares… they were always the same. She could always remember flashes—Acnologia…. And someone she loved being hurt—right in front of her. It made her feel sick. Just don’t think about it now. It’s over. She slipped out of bed, her muscles protesting, pulling on her warm knit sweater and slipping into slippers. It was early, she left her hair down, tiptoeing downstairs to the kitchen to get something for breakfast. She was hoping no one else would be awake, but Jellal was sitting at the table, reading a book and sipping tea. He glanced up when she stepped in.
“Good morning,” he said, smiling a little. “Do you want some tea?” She nodded once, and he got up to grab a mug, filling it with the warm drink and setting it in front of the chair next to his. “Come sit down.” She padded over to the table, pulling out the chair and dropping down to sit next to him. The tea was hot, so she wrapped her hands around the ceramic mug to warm them, and let the steam warm her face.
“Thank you,” she said softly.
“You’re welcome,” Jellal responded. There was a pause, before he said, “Wendy, there’s something I want to ask you.” Wendy glanced up at him to meet his eyes. “Do you… want to call me ‘Dad’?”
Her eyes widened, and she glanced down at her hands. Why is he…? Suddenly she remembered waking up the night before, screaming for him—screaming Dad.
“I… If you… I mean, if you… if you’re…”
Jellal laughed a little, reaching out to pull her into a gentle hug. “I’d like that, if that’s what you want.” Wendy felt tears sting the corners of her eyes, as she gripped Jellal’s shirt and held him tight.
“Yes!” She whispered. It made her heart warm. I have a mom and dad. She smiled, holding Jellal close. I have a mom and a dad.

Knights of Favonius: Are you lying?
Venti: That depends on how you define lying.
Knights of Favonius: Well I define it as not telling the truth, how do you define it?
Venti:
Venti: ... reclining your body in a horizontal position.
Knights of Favonius: Get out of here.
Venti: That’s fair.
