Moving onto another major branch of Neoaves, we have the Gruiformes, the first family of which we'll look at is Rallidae: the rails. There are 152 living species with a cosmopolitan distribution. Pictured are the pūkeko (Porphyrio melanotus) and the clapper rail (Rallus crepitans).
Rails are generally terrestrial birds, often seen skulking around in dense vegetation. This terrestrial habit, combined with their penchant for dispersing to islands, has made them one of the champions of independently abandoning flight; an estimated 31 extant and recently extinct rail species have independently become flightless after finding themselves on an island. The diets of rails tend towards omnivory, though some species have become more herbivorous. Many species inhabit wetlands and are adept in the water, while others are more strictly terrestrial. One lineage, the coots, have converged on a grebe trait by developing lobed toes to aid in their more aquatic ecology.
Coots are also infamous for the treatment of their young. Pairs typically hatch more chicks than they can reliably feed, so the parents will target certain chicks in their brood to harass and attack when it begs for food, until it eventually stops begging and starves. The pressure of a lack of food is a brutal force.
