hey this is weird but im also a biotech major (btech) and im in my 3rd year and my ass doesnt have any idea how and when to do internships any advice

HI!

So I'm finishing a 3 year BSc Hons degree and I recently got an internship for my bachelor's thesis. So I can tell you what I have experienced myself and what I have gleaned from my seniors and faculty.

There is no bad time to do an internship. I honestly wish I could have done atleast one more but certain global pandemics that must not be named meant that I couldn't do any for the bulk of my college life. But internships are all about your own skills, time management and interests. You can find part time ones during week days or full times ones during the summer break.

The harsh truth I have noticed is that getting research internships at prominent institutes is really difficult without knowing someone or having some kind of contact to get face time with your preferred researcher. HOWEVER, you should still try to contact these professors and researchers anyways. So you can do that by:

Going through the institutes website and look at their departments, faculty, professors, research groups and recent papers. Focus on identifying what exactly matches your own interests.

Prepare a CV - look through examples online. Put your information across in formal language and proofread over and over again. If you feel like your CV is lacking, sign up a course or two on Coursera, EdX or NPTEL. (Pro tip - You can just audit the course instead of paying for the certificate in Courser and EdX. The course page will have a free track or an audit option). Put almost everything in your CV in a detailed but concise manner. Try to Google "how to put ____ in a CV". Limit the size to two pages MAX.

Identify specific researchers you want to work with and familiarize yourself with their work (you don't have to go too in depth but just get an overview). Prepare a cover letter for each researcher you are interested in. And make sure to express your interest in their work and why exactly you are interested in the topic.

Send your cover letter and CV to their email id. Sit tight and hope. You can remind them of your application maybe a couple of weeks later if you don't get a reply.

You will be rejected by most of them. It's alright. It's almost certainly not personal. Try again with the next researcher.

A lot of institutions, companies and other organizations also generally have specific slots open for interns especially during the summer. So, you can find out if your university or one of your teachers can help you sign up for these or notify you when the applications are open.

NGOs are an excellent place to gain experience and contribute to society while also building up your merits and your CV. And NGOs are always looking for volunteers and interns. So, you can try to narrow your selection down to the kind of work you are interested in and apply to their HR department or even go in person of that is possible. Some NGOs also take in interns from different states to work from home with online resources. So you can look into that too.

I'm including some links to resources about making CVs and drafting cover letters:

Basics of building a CV:

academicguides.waldenu.edu
Academic Guides: Curriculum Vitae Guide: Build Your Curriculum Vitae (c.v.)

Basics of cover letter drafting:

Internship and Career Center
Informational Videos Watch this and other videos on our informational videos page. Check back often for new uploaded content.

Yeah that's about how much I know right now. This is by no means an exhaustive guide. So try to reach out to a teacher you like for further guidance. You can even send them your CV and cover letter drafts so they can help you hammer out any and all kinks.

All the best!!

Just found knew that you want to learn data analysis while you are majored in psychology. I am also majored in Arabic language and literature but I want to be a data analyst :))

I'm struggling right now with statistics and data visualization on excel 🤦 this is so hard!

Could share with me your learning resources if you don't mind? I'm using Nanodegree on Udacity

hi, yes i can definitely share the resources i’ve been using :) i’m still working through many of these myself, so i can’t vouch for quality, but the full list is:

for data viz and machine learning:

data science and machine learning bootcamp

harvard’s CS109A and CS109B

stanford’s CS229

ubc CS 340

for statistics:

MIT 18.650

MIT 18.05

UCI 131A

carneige mellon probability and statistics

i also recommend checking out this repo for a complete list of data science resources. i would also recommend learning about pandas and seaborn for data viz, those are libraries used pretty much all the time in the industry, even more than excel imo :) scikit-learn is another library i’m learning about that i would recommend you look into as well!

Language timeline

I wanted to share the timeline I am using to learn my target languages. Keep in mind, mine is set up for nine different languages, but if you aren't learning nine at the same time (because most people aren't insane like I am), you can modify it to match your learning easily.

Before I show you my timeline, I wanted to talk a little bit about why I decided I wanted to tackle nine languages at once, and why I chose the languages I did. First of all, I am self studying all of these languages except ASL. I am in a college level course for ASL, and will still be posting about learning it, just less than I will about any of the other languages.

All of the languages on my list are priorities right now, but I will focus the most on ASL, Frisian, Arabic, Korean and Afrikaans. I am doing it this way because I want to learn many languages, of course, but doing both easy and hard languages at relatively the same time can make it easier on my brain. This might not be the same for you, but my special interest is languages and I want to learn as much as I can right now. Obviously, this isn't going to work for everyone, as learning one language at a time is pretty difficult in its own right.

Now onto the reasons I'm learning each language. I am learning Spanish because it is extremely useful in daily life and in the professional world, I am learning Ukrainian because I want the challenge, I am learning Finnish because I have always had a fascination with the language as I am part Finnish, I am learning Frisian because its interesting to learn a language so close to English, I'm learning Korean and Arabic because I love the writing systems, and I'm learning Afrikaans because not only is it a beautiful language, it can give me a foundation should I want to learn Dutch later on as they are similar. Finally, I am learning ASL for the ability to communicate well with deaf people and because I am interested in the culture.

My timeline is weekly view. I plan on studying three languages a day, studying for two hours each day. Thursdays are for practicing a little of everything, focusing on things I need more time to understand or need to research a little bit more, as well as trying to form sentences and practice pronunciation more.

Study To Success

When Studying To Code, Especially As A Beginner, It’s Super Nice To See How Far You’ve Come In The

When studying to code, especially as a beginner, it’s super nice to see how far you’ve come in the future, so wouldn’t it be nice to have a way to track your coding progress? I think so! I have some ideas as to how you can~

Keep a journal 📔

You can use a physical or digital journal to write down your coding goals, summarises what you worked on each day, and any challenges or successes you encountered! I have a physical bullet journal to add goals but I also have a Google Sheets spreadsheet to track the challenges I do and any moments of big achievements like when I finish a major project at work!

Use a task or project management tool 🔨

I work on a lot of projects in one go so I find these very useful! There are many tools available that allow you to create tasks and track your progress. Some popular options include Trello (which I personally use the app), Asana, and ATracker.

Use version control 🖥️

As you get into coding projects, you might of heard of version control - sounds huge but it isn’t! If you're working on a software project, you can use version control systems like Git to literally track your code changes and be able to see the history of your code! Mix that with GitHub and you have a real image of how your project has progressed!

Use a code timer ⏱️

There are tools out there that allows you to track how much time you spend on different tasks or projects - in minutes, hours, days and even the past month! This can help you identify areas where you're spending too much time, and identify ways to be more efficient. I’ve shared on here using Wakatime which even allows you to set daily coding time goals! It definitely helps me! Other timers include Toggl, Study Bunny and Focus Quest-Study Timer!

Share your progress with others 🤗

Consider sharing your progress with a mentor, friends and families, colleague, or an online community. Online communities are my best choice! Tumblr, Twitter, YouTube, your own blog website, anything! Discord is another fav, I’ll probably make a post of some Discord servers you could join that help people on programming! They’ve helped me a lot and I got to meet cool people, get inspired for new project ideas and just get to talk to people about programming, technology and even tech jobs!

━━━ ⋆⋅☆

Well, that’s all I have to share! Whether you're working on a personal project or part of a team, tracking your progress will help you stay on track and make the most of your time. Happy coding and have a nice day/night! 💻🤎
