THE WITCHER 3: Wild Hunt (2015)
shallowmagics:
Ciri’s nose scrunched up as she smiled. There had been issues between them, beginning and ending with the witch, but Ciri knew Yennefer would rather die than actually hurt her. Yenn had seen the chaos within Ciri, how she was drowning under the weight of it, and had chosen to help her. For that, Ciri would always be grateful. Yennefer made her feel safe.
Lacing their fingers together, Ciri playfully knocked her smaller body into Yenn’s. “I would like that. I don’t have much, the people in town helped me. I don’t have a lot from home either.” The thought was sobering. The people were the most important to her, at least she had one with her now. “Zireael managed to come with me.”
“I don’t understand the technology but the bakery… they’re nice to me. Helpful. How long have you been here?”
A laugh bubbled out of Yennefer as Ciri bumped into her, the sound a true rarity, especially in the past few months of being here on her own. She mirrored the action, lightly knocking into Ciri. Elation couldn’t begin to describe her feelings in that moment. Even if it were only to last a little while, for now she had her daughter, which was the only thing that mattered.
“Its good to know the realms still respect the first rule of being a witcher. ‘A witcher can forget to eat, to drink, to breathe even, but a witcher never forgets to care for their blade,’“ It was a sentiment the pair had heard rattled off by Geralt and Vesemir countless times. She knew the importance the blade held, and was glad it had made it across. For a moment, she wondered if Ciri could escape this place, for she was the only person she knew of who could easily hop between realms. She dispelled the idea with a minute shake of her head.
Yennefer nodded as understood the bit about technology well, “I’m glad they’ve shown you kindness. I’ve been here, oh, five months now? Maybe more. Tracking time was a little hard at first. I was trying to find my way back to you, mostly, but there doesn’t seem to be a way to leave. I’ve got a job at the little metaphysical shop. Its nice enough, but its not as pleasing as what I used to do. You know how well I take being told what to do.”

Catra blushed bright red at Midna’s giggle, feeling even more embarrassed, but xe hoped the dark of the night before them hid xir flushed cheeks. Xe cleared xir throat, trying not to let it get to xem.
“That does sound beautiful,” xe said, once the embarrassment had faded a bit. “People who are afraid of the dark are usually not the best ones to take judgement from anyway.”
Catra swallowed, not making eye contact as Midna became more serious. “Yeah, I’ve got… I’ve got my Adora back home. I mean- my girlfriend,” they said. “I mean, there’s friends too, I guess. Her friends sort of accepted me into their-” Catra made a face, clearly showing her disdain for the words they were about to say “best friend squad. But Adora’s the one I want to get back to the most. She’s…” everything to me.
Midna shrugged off xer comment. At this point, she couldn’t, or wouldn't, judge people who were scared of the dark. It was natural in Hylians and humans alike. She supposed it could’ve been part of the curse the goddesses put on her people so long ago— to not only cast them out, but to make everyone afraid. She didn’t like that notion.
“That's a pretty name,” Midna replied softly. “She sounds like a wonderful person. Missing her must… I know what its like to miss someone like that.”
She didn’t say anything else for a little while, her hands playing with the soft fabric of her skirt. “I won’t say it gets easier, because it doesn't. But you learn how to cope. Funny enough, this place brought me back to the person I was missing, so maybe it’ll bring her here for you too.”

KATE FINISHED WIPING DOWN YESTERDAY’S FACTOID OFF THE MINI CHALKBOARD SHE’D BOUGHT, and thumbed through her phone for the next one. It was one of her favorite bits of the White Rabbit during Pride Month - getting to share information to the community. When did the first gay bar open? 1936 - Mona’s 440 Club in San Francisco. The bell chiming pulled Kate’s attention away from the board, as she smiled at the woman who walked in.
❝ Welcome! We’re not too packed right now, but be warned - it’s poetry night tonight and I’ve had a lot of people promise to come. ❞

River had not had much time to explore town since she had arrived a few months back. Her job kept her busy making lesson plans, grading papers, and coming up with engaging activities for her students. She had heard people reference places here and there, and felt it was high time she actually got around to visiting some of them for herself.
Having decided to go to the White Rabbit after work was one of the best ideas she’d had in a long while. Upon entering it was easy to see why people liked the place so much. She couldn’t remember the last time she had been individually greeted when walking into a bar (but to be completely fair— River didn’t remember much of anything).
“Poetry night?” River flashed a smile, “I had no idea. How exciting!”

“Ah I am sorry about that. I’m Zelda. It’s a pleasure to meet you” the brunette said and smiled softly as they looked at him. He seemed to be a sweetheart and that was a nice change compared to some of the people she had ran into in recent days. People who just assumed that they could stop her just because she worked as a model. It was disheartening, truth be told.
“And holding onto your arm would be nice. Once again thank you so much for being so kind” hooking their arms around his, Zelda took a deep breath in order to make her spinning head somewhat stable.

“Well, its nice to meet you as well,” Sam grinned back at her as they began to walk up the street. He liked them already. In all honesty, he couldn’t fathom the idea of people swarming him in the street like that. What Hobbit would? He would rather stay hidden away indoors forever than have to face that regularly. “Ah don’t mention it, I’m glad to help.” Not wanting to intrude, but still curious, he asked the most prominent question in his mind, “So you have to deal with things like that often? How do you manage it?”
In order to help maintain her balance, he didn’t walk too fast. It took a bit of concentration as he had always had the nasty habit of stumbling over his own feet. As they approached the café, Sam opened the door to let them in first.

DEAN WAS PROUD OF HIS OWN WAND. he’d spent weeks working on the carvings, perhaps even more time scouring ollivander’s resources for the perfect core that called to him and the wood that felt best in his skin. It’d been the first wand he’d been allowed to make on his own, Ollivander claiming that once you’d made one for yourself, every other wand would be easier as it was just seeing which woods and cores felt like they matched. ❝ Thank you. I had my first wand taken from me during the war, and I had stolen a back-up but those never work the same. I was a wandmaker’s apprentice after the war, so I got to make it myself. ❞ It was one of the few things after the war that he was proud of.
HE TOOK HIS WAND BACK, CAREFULLY SLIPPING IT INTO THE HARNESS HE HAD AT HIS SIDE. he liked that he could have it more exposed in sallow hills, tucked carefully at his hip where he could reach it at convenience. ❝ I suspect that there’s similar magic in my home, though wizards just aren’t tuned into it. There’s loads of other magical beings who can do a bunch of stuff we can’t, and it’s probably tied to a magic we can’t control. If you’re interested in that kinda stuff, one of my old professors would be the guy to talk to. I mean, it’s kinda complicated cuz he’s not old here, but Remus Lupin. He’s the guy to talk to. ❞
IT WAS INTERESTING. it wasn’t something dean would want to dedicate a lot of time to studying, but it was interesting how different magic was from person to person. He wondered even in his own world if magic felt different between people. He’d have to ask Harry and Seamus.
Yennefer knew war. She had been in several over the years, and had recently... well... she didn’t want to think about that. They had all come out of it alive, and that's what mattered. Either way, she had some concept of what the boy had been through, even if she wasn’t familiar with the war of his world. “Your time and dedication shows. You’ve impressed me, wandmaker, not an easy thing to do.”
Where she came from, magic was a force to be harnessed; the one casting could attempt to do such a thing in whatever manner suited them best. It could do nearly anything, for a price. Everything had its price.
“Well, if I ever need to discuss the magic of an adjacent sphere with someone, I’ll be sure to give him a call,” she said, knowing that there was little motivation for her to do such a thing. After a brief pause, Yennefer asked what she almost didn't, “You don’t make them anymore? The wands.”

ZSASZ CHUCKLED A BIT AT HER POLITENESS. it was obviously, now, that she’d been around politicians (or perhaps royals in her world ?) before. He was surprised he hadn’t picked up on it before. ❝ Just Zsasz is fine. Some people from home call me Mr. Zsasz, though that’s more for formality. ❞
HER CLOTHES WERE NICE, IF A BIT DIFFERENT. though zsasz couldn’t comment on that front when he was in nearly entirely leather and had around six weapons stored on his body at the moment (which was on the low end). Of course, most of those weapons were concealed aside from the one hand gun he had in his shoulder strap.
❝ I CERTAINLY LEAN TOWARDS THE DARKER SIDE FOR MOST THINGS. but it is never that simple, i’m sure you understand. We all have our loyalties, and the things we care about. For example - I am a vegetarian, because I dislike how animals are often treated in the meat industry on this planet. ❞ But killing people was fine. It was strange, but it was who he was. ❝ And of course I have my rules. I think we all do, at the end of the day. ❞ No kids. No one who was connected to Oswald or Falcone unless that person ordered it. Nothing that will start a war you aren’t ready for. And of course, there were the hits Zsasz would do for free - when it came to the people who were somehow worse than himself.
“Zsasz it is, then,” the mage smiled a cat-like grin. It lit up her face in a pretty way. Yennefer was an exceedingly pretty woman.
Loyalty was the name of her game as well. It had been ever since she had left Aretuza. First it had been to her only friends— Sabrina, Triss, Istredd. Then, after a long while, her mentor Tissaia joined the list. Now, the list was emphatically belonging to Ciri and Geralt and Jaskier (even if she would never tell the bard out loud). Her duty was first and foremost to keep them safe, no matter the jobs she signed on to do.
“Interesting— I like that. We all have our stances in life, and I can respect yours greatly. Even when I don’t agree with someone’s moronic stance on morality, I can respect holding to your morals,” Yennefer said as she leaned against the counter, shifting the weight on her boots. “Indeed. Having rules is important. You lose yourself if you don’t have them, in my experience.” She had lost herself a few times when she had broken her own rules, and she had never wanted to experience that again. Especially around her Chaos. When you break your rules, you risk everything being taken away from you.

He laughs at her words but shakes his head at them. ❝ I don’t think he was lying, but that does sounds a bit skeevy though. ❞ Literally hypnotic, perhaps not, but when someone as beautiful as she comes with her equally beautiful eyes, it makes a person stop and stare.
The talk of her father caught his attention for a multitude of reasons. He thinks that if Shepard were here, he’d probably have a million and one questions to ask her about that. And it’s not that Simon didn’t have those same questions, but he’s not as brave as his friend when it comes to prying into other people’s business.
Another reason that it calls his attention is the fact that her words don’t shock him as much as they should. It’s almost as if this isn’t the first he’s met someone with a unique bloodline like that, but he can’t place a face or a name to that thought.
❝ It’s nice to meet you too, m’am. And sorry again, for making a bit of a mess. ❞
Yennefer shrugged. The idea of ‘skeevy’ men was a norm for her, and it didn’t throw her off as it once did long ago. She was able to separate the gross from the genuine now, and knew Simon hadn’t meant it that way. Still, she remained focused on him, wanting to know his intentions for visiting the little shop.
“Don’t worry yourself over it. What's done is done. And to be completely honest, I don’t have much grounds to be cross since you set things straight again. Not many have the decency to do such a thing,” she waved a hand in vague dismissal. She had an urge to probe for more information, though if she were a better person, she would have felt more guilty for poking around someone with what she was thinking to be town-caused amnesia.
Crossing the room to set things back to absolute perfection, she was still eyeing him up. Thankfully for Simon, there was little in her gaze past curiosity. “So, Simon, what are you searching for exactly? It's not everyday I see kind boys like you walk into this little place.”
