The festival is usually observed in the month of January every year. Pongal denotes the beginning of the sun's six-month long voyage northwards. The term "Pongal" is intricately tied to rice and signifies the act of boiling. The occasion serves as an expression of gratitude to the Sun God for a bountiful harvest, with a customary ritual of boiling rice in milk offered as a gesture to the sun prior to the festival's commencement. In Rajasthan and Haryana, it is known as Sakraat, while Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh observe it as Uttarayana.
