𝐠𝐮𝐲𝐬...

I saw sinners (twice)...

𝐠𝐮𝐲𝐬...

I don't even know where to start.

I have so many thoughts swirling through my head at such a rapid speed that I can't control.

it's all a jumbled mess of emotions, think pieces, and of course, possible plots/ideas for fics.

I do plan to watch it a third-fourth-fifth-millionth time the moment I get the chance to, and when I do, the plan is to start posting ... STUFF, idk, some of everything (but nothing is set in stone, though, because y'all know me - my upload speed isn't known for being the fastest in the west🥴).

but until then, send some requests in my inbox for me to look at‼️PLEASE‼️, and in due time, they'll get written.

REAL QUICK BEFORE YOU DO THAT, THO, SOME BOUNDARIES, because as much as i'm usually and typically down for writing whatever/taboo themes, i'm already starting to notice some of y'all cuttin' up and acting a fool sumn' REAL FOUL on here about this movie/these characters...

───────── 《 .°•♡•°. 》 ──────────

- NO, I will not do incest or (specifically in this case/fandom) stepcest (other fandoms I write for are free game - minus actual incest ofc - unless I decide to change my mind and state otherwise idk lol).

- speaking of taboo, though, I will do age gaps (nothing illegal, though, get outta here with that). it's vampire media - if you're coming into it expecting a lack of some questionable gaps, then maybe vampirism isn't for you lmao.

- the reader will be black/black-coded a lot of the time (unless requested/specified otherwise, but also, don't get pissy if I turn down something I don't like) (a.k.a., stay out of my inbox if you can't handle the fact that not everything is about/focused on white ppl).

- I can... try to do modern au's ?? won't be very good at them, fair warning, but it definitely helps if you get creative, and i'm always looking for ways to improve my craft :).

- I will write for...

the twins (obvi) stack (elias) & smoke (elijah) (fair warning, though, i'm picky with plotlines - i've never been an MBJ girly, but i'm IN LOVE with these twins personalities and his portrayal of them, so they might be a little hard for me to write sometimes, might not be other times - my apologies🥲🙏🏽).

bo chow (I could be living in the next town over by train, and i'd STILL find a way to get my ass into this man's shop every single day so I could catch a glimpse of this fine babe😻).

remmick (he's a vampire with a sexy southern-irish accent and a sexy face; need I say more😌?).

maybe sammie (preacher boy)?? (😃✋🏽give me something really good to work with, and i'll see what I can do lol).

and NONE OF THE KLAN MEMBERS,,,

without filter, evil lyssa™ ahead,,, 🥰kys🥰 if you're genuinely out here trying to excuse fucking/writing about fucking a literal kkk member. if all it takes is a deep-voiced southern, "hey, baby" for your morals to escape you, you're a weak minded slut with no backbone, and if you don't like that, get tf up or stay pressed🫶🏽 (notsayingitwasn'tsexyintheheatofthemoment/thewayitwasfilmed, itwas, butagain... STAND UP🗣‼️).

───────── 《 .°•♡•°. 》 ──────────

anyways🥰, with that being said and evil lyssa™ gone, go ahead and rack my inbox up :D !! i'll maybe probably idk be back with some think pieces regarding the movie and its symbolizms/meanings, and some thirst pieces regarding how fine everybody is♡.

'til then, byeeeee /ᐠ^3^マ/ !!

Ryan Coogler in this interview describing Marvin Gaye's "I Want You." Sexy as hell.

"I'm strong enough to take, but I want you to want to be taken."

if sinners (2025) taught me anything, it's that it IS actually always about race.

you can be oppressed, and still promote and maintain the very same systems of oppression onto other marginalized people. being oppressed in one dimension doesn't allow you to be exempt from oppressing in other dimensions. the "villain" of the movie, remmick, being from the time period of the english colonization of ireland, all the while wanting to take a piece of sammie's own culture from him, use him for it. and this plot point coming after remmick witnesses the significance of sammie's playing within his culture, for his ancestors and how it would shape Black culture in the future.

even in today's society, ive noticed that people treat Black people like a commodity. our worth is only as much as other people decide it to be, and that's usually dependent on how much the oppressor can take from us. for example, the controversy of"internet slang" and how it is blatantly just AAVE with a bad disguise on

do you listen to Black musicians? do you watch Black movies? do you engage with Black creators? do you defend the racist tendencies you notice in your friends, in your family, or do you stay silent? do you listen when Black people tell you you've said or done something racist? do you actually care about not being racist, or do you just not want to look like you're racist?

i just think people have a very specific take on what racism is, and that if they're not committing KKK-levels of violence on people, then they're not racist. or if you've experienced oppression in one form, you cannot possibly be engaging with oppression in another form. but the ways in which we interact with other people and the world will always be through the lens of race, because that is simply what it means for oppression to be systemic, especially in the US and our current political climate

anyway 10/10 movie. highly recommend

Journal #4

I just saw sinners yesterday and omg it’s so good. It’s so much symbolism and it’s overall a beautiful movie. I could honestly talk about it for the rest of my life if I could, I might just make a few post about it. I really recommend everyone to go see it IMMEDIATELY. And I do hope it wins an Oscar.

I (and probably a lot of other people) found the garlic test scene in Sinners reminiscent of the blood test scene in John Carpenter's The Thing but I just thought of another scene in Sinners that reminded me of Carpenter's 1982 horror classic. Spoilers for both The Thing and Sinners btw.

When we are first introduced to the vampire Remmick he is being hunted by Choctaw vampire hunters. He seeks shelter with an American couple who offer him protection from his pursuers. The lead hunter warns them of Remmick but is ignored. Remmick then kills the couple and assimilates them into his vampire hivemind.

The Thing opens with the Thing (in the disguise of a dog) being hunted by Norwegian researchers. The Thing seeks shelter with a group of American researchers who protect it from its pursuers. One of the Norwegians tries to the Americans of the Thing but he isn't understood and is ignored. The Thing then kills the Americans and assimilates them into it.

In both movies a creature pretending to be something it isn't (a human and a dog) is being hunted by a group of non-English speakers. The creature seeks shelter with, and is offered protection by, a group of Americans. The non-English speakers attempt to warn the Americans of the creature but are ignored. The creature then kills the Americans and makes them one with it. The non-English speakers who were hunting the creature are also never seen again after their introductory scene (the Norwegians are killed when they try to kill the Thing and the Choctaw just leave the moment the Sun goes down).

Coincidence? Maybe, but I wouldn't blame Ryan Coogler for taking inspiration from The Thing. Both movies are amazing and I love them.

Edit: Another user pointed this out to me and I really thought I should mention that there's a distinct difference between why the Norwegians are ignored and why the Choctaw are ignored. In The Thing the Norwegian's warning is ignored due to a language barrier. None of the Americans speak Norwegian and the Norwegians can't speak English, so they don't understand what he is saying. Meanwhile in Sinners the lead Choctaw warns the wife of the danger of Remmick in English but she willingly ignores him because the couple are Klan members (or at least the husband is), of course she's not going to listen to a group of Native Americans especially after a white guy told her that they raped and murdered his wife.

In The Thing it's a misunderstanding between two groups who don't speak eachothers language that causes the warning to be ignored but in Sinners it's because of the couples racist beliefs and preconceptions of Native Americans.

As an Irish person I loved the inclusion of the Irish experience in Sinners and how it is comparable to that of black people and the Native Americans. The Irish were colonised and forcefully converted to Christianity, we were stripped of our language, culture, land and religion similarily to the people of the African and Native American tribes. Hell, when Irish immigrants first came to America they weren't even considered white (which really goes to show how arbitrary the term 'white' really is). The Rocky Road of Dublin scene is just so great. To have a mainstream film feature a character sing a traditional Irish jig and do some Irish dancing is so cool, plus the song straight up slaps. I love this movie so much, it better get all the awards.

That being said, just because Remmick suffered at the hands of the British does not justify all the terrible stuff he does. He is still very much the villain of the film.

said by someone who didn't watch the movie... ? i know what you are lmfaooo. only a certain ✋🏻 demographic would see a movie wherein a white man leads a hive minded lynch mob to rob a young black man of his autonomy and voice, and instead of engaging with any of the messages that are actually important, turn it into... slop

I never thought it could be done but somehow Sinners managed to make a story about two men that want to kill each other more homoerotic than death note.

No because that one movie Sinners is coming out soon and once I saw that one possessed white dude or vampire white dude or whatever he is I immediately said “Yeah no I hope white people don’t watch this movie because then they’re going to make it all about him because he’s a medium attractive white man with fangs even though Michael B Jordan is right there” because they always DO

"unracist those motherfuckers" vs what is said about sammie's family's church... i know what you are. how about the themes of colonialism and abusive religion that remmick perpetuates. how about remmick's co-opting of black culture. how about remmick paying no regard to a young and gifted black man's autonomy because he wants his gift to serve him. "i want your stories, i want your music"— i do not think painting remmick as this kumbaya singing advocate of peace and equality was the message in this movie, but showing that racism is not just klansmen who say the hard r and lynch black people (which is essentially what remmick was doing as well). even the music he plays says this— the blending of cultures as sammy transcends time with his music, you see all sorts, but remmick is solely focused on white music, his irish heritage is his only focus in his music. "unracist those motherfuckers" no! he just made them a different form of racist! juxtaposition lol.

also michael b jordan as a blood-soaked sweating shirtless vampire thank u ryan coogler. thank u god.

the comparison of the Irish experience to the Black experience, finding out that Remmick comes from a time when the Irish were colonized... while still acknowledging that he was able to use that privilege to escape the vampire hunters... and the first thing he did was un-racist those fuckers in the home he ran in to.

and the absolute juxtaposition of Sammie escaping the vampire hivemind with his life, only to go back home to the church where he is expected to give up the music of his life to assimilate into his father's church

FUCK

Ryan fuckin Coogler the man that you are

i'm not going to shut the fuck up about this movie

likeeee mind u the fucking kkk still exists yall some weird fucks seriously get help.

I think it's really crazy how this movie was supposed to circle around black people, but the Elmer's glue skinned people had to fuck it up by their crazy ass fantasies. "Sammie x Remmick" "Remmick x plantation owner daughter" "stack x smoke" I also seen "kkk member x reader" like what this actual fuck, shipping remmick with Sammie is one thing and outrageous but a kkk member is a actual different level of insane. I can't make anyone do anything but the least y'all could do is take that shit to ao3 so we have the choice to avoid it.

I mean we just can't have shit without White people fucking it up. They always and I mean ALWAYS find a way to make it about them. As expected we could have had something great I mean stack and smoke are right there why are not focusing on the actual fine shyt's. The internet always finds a way to disappoint.

Went for a round two. Probably best movie of the year so far. Only On Becoming a Guinea Fowl comes close. Spoilers ahead.

Cannot stop thinking about thresholds. This time around, my brain is broken.

There is of course the threshold of the door, the entryway to a building that directly correlates (here) to an entry into a community of people brought together by their shared identity and experience. This threshold is what most immediately elaborates the vampire metaphor: Remmick seeks community, but a community through his own dominion, without realizing that the distinctions between different peoples allow those communities to exist. This will be important later.

The next immediate threshold is that of time. We are separated from the past and from the future, and it is in the present moment that we establish community (but with a foresight and hindsight that let us interface with interpreted history and development). The stated thesis of the movie is that music, acting as a cultural throughline, can allow us to demolish this barrier, and participate in broad stretches of time in a much more ontologically informative way. The first dance scene in the juke joint ties these two barriers together: Sammy annihilates the temporal barrier, allowing a temporally continuous community to manifest, but symbolically 'burns the house down', and so also (for a moment) annihilates the barrier of the home, of the community, and allows Remmick to observe, cultural voyeur, even behind closed doors. When you let in the good, you may also let in the bad. This can be understood as an alternate thesis.

There is, in my accounting, one more primary layer of thresholds (although the layers of the threshold symbol continue to unravel as I consider them, so this is obviously not 'complete'). This is the threshold between individuals. It is extremely significant that Coogler focuses the vampire's telepathy almost as much as their exclusion from entryways. Remmick, and those under his influence, believe in the annihilation of the individual exactly because the individual represents an inherent exclusion of the other. In many ways this separation is oppressive (it is certainly a primary source of oppressive thought in that it limits empathy). In this sense, individuality is the most significant barrier, that between the self and the other, and of course those creatures excluded from culture, excluded from homes, excluded from life could see the annihilation of the ultimate exclusive object, the self, as a thing of beauty. And of course Remmick, with his dominating personality, would believe that his individuality should supersede those of others, essentially because it can. He fails to be empathetic because he believes too deeply that human experience can be singularized, and as his only real reference of self is himself, he exerts it on others, possibly even unconsciously. He fails further to realize that the community, the home, and the life he seeks exist only within the context of the separated individuals, seen not as the self and the other, but, for a moment at least, as a composition of distinct but interrelated subjectivities, spanning time through the one thing that even Remmick knows can connect people in a way his domineering telepathy cannot: music.

Watched Sinners

Watched Sinners

Listen to them, the children of the night. What music they make!

Phenomenal. That first dance scene is a revelation. Everything Coogler does, from the timer of the setting sun to the Lord's Prayer to the end-credits, he pulls off perfectly. The music (and the rest of the sound in those distorted states in the first half of the movie) deftly conveys the emotional states and sociopolitical allegory. A level of complexity to the use of the vampire motif that if I start talking about this will get way too long. Deeply moving. Great move to watch if you're terrified of death.

Will ye go, Lassie, go? And we'll all go together To pull wild mountain thyme All around the bloomin' heather Wlil ye go, Lassie, go?
