If you haven’t heard of her, Laika is a Soviet dog sent to space during the space race in 1957. She was the first living animal to orbit the earth.
Her trip was tragically one-way.
Her trip played an instrumental role in proving that space was livable and we owe her so much. I suggest you read more about her as my summary was very short and barely touches the amazing and tragic story of Laika.
I made this piece for a school project and I’m pretty happy with how it turned out. The assignment was to incorporate song lyrics into a design, and I chose Arcade Fire - Neighborhood #2 (Laika). It’s a great song and I knew I wanted to base my drawing around it. I also find interest in Laika’s story, so this song was a great match for me. I’m pretty happy with how this turned out and I’m definitely going to make more art centered around her. In the mean time, go check out her story and Arcade Fire’s music!!
Also, before anyone comments, I know that the lyric is ‘should’ve’ rather than ‘shoulda’. I made the change to help with formatting, so before you say something please know I am aware that it is incorrect!
ok. icebreaker-type question. imagine time travel exists, but all of the serious super big things that likely come to mind when time travel is a factor is stuff youre not “qualified” for, as a civilian. what stupid, petty, thing do you use time travel for?
personally, i’d buy this one limited-time pin from a con i had no chance of going to, and also buy some transformers animated toys while they were still being sold.

oh my god it’s laika day everyone drop what you’re doing… we honour a little dog who was sent up into space 65 years ago today. she was found as a three year old stray mongrel wandering the streets of moscow. her ability to endure hardy conditions got her chosen as the candidate for a journey she was never meant to survive. she passed away seven hours after liftoff. I hope she died dreaming of chasing rabbits up in the stars I love u laika forever and ever

did laika know she would be so loved so long after she was gone? did she know people would write songs and poems about her? she was barely loved throughout her life until the scientists kissed her nose before they sent her to her death. do you think that heat death was the closest she felt to a warm embrace? i miss her every day. im not alone in that. she’ll never be alone up there in the stars.

Fun(?)fact: Kudryavka means “curly” in Russian. I have no idea if the creators did this on purpose or if it is a total coincidence, but I like to think that actually his name is a small reference to Laika ;-;
