Ways to Use Crystals

From Crystal Cure

Put them around your home!

Place a protective stone, such as black onyx, hematite, or black obsidian, outside by your front door to prevent negative energies, including burglars, from entering your home.

Place a rose quartz on a table or shelf in a frequently used room, such as a living room, family room, or den, to fill your home with love and harmony.

Decorate with seasonal stone colors.

Put them in your car!

Placing a golden tiger-eye in your car will help to protect you and your car against accidents.  Place the stone in a secure place where it will not roll around or get lost.  I suggest wrapping it in wire, attaching it to a cord or chain, and then hanging it from the rearview mirror.

Bring them to work!

Place a quartz cluster or purple fluorite cluster next to your computer to help protect you from its electromagnetic field.

Place a smoky quartz on your desk or in your work space to protect yourself against the stress and frustration of your coworkers or clients.

Keep a rose quartz or amethyst with you.  When work is stressful, hold it in your hand or rub it with your fingers.

Bring them with you on your next vacation or business trip!

Carry an aquamarine or moonstone with you for protection while traveling.

Clear the air!

To disperse negative energy, use a black or dark stone, such as onyx, obsidian, tourmaline, jet, apache tear, smoky quartz, or hematite.  These stones, when placed about a room, home, or other area, work as environmental cleansers that purify the area and protect it from negative energies.

Fight pain!

Lapis, malachite, and bloodstone are good pain relievers.   Place them on the affected body part or area of the body until the pain lessens.

Tape a carnelian to your lower abdomen to relieve the pain of menstrual cramps.

For a headache, place an amethyst, amber, or turquoise stone on your forehead, or, if you have multiple stones, place them around your head.

In the case of a migraine, lapis has been used since the time of the ancient Egyptians, if not longer.

Get a good night’s sleep!

Place an azurite, amethyst, or sugilite on your forehead or under your pillow to increase your dreams.

A garnet or amethyst under your pillow will help you to remember your dreams.

A black tourmaline, smoky quartz, or amethyst will chase away any nightmares.

Can’t sleep?  Place a rose quartz or amethyst by your bed or under your pillow to combat insomnia.

Get in control of your emotions!

Moonstone, chrysocolla, aventurine, rose quartz, and blue lace agate are all stones that help to balance emotions.  You can wear them in jewelry, keep them on your person, or take a bath with them.

Use a rose quartz for emotional healing.

Aquamarine, aventurine, moonstone, rhodonite, and rose quartz are calming stones.  Lie down and place one over your heart, or bathe with them, or massage yourself with them.

To relieve stress, worry, fear, and anxiety, use one of the following: aventurine, black tourmaline, black onyx, lapis, sodalite, chrysocolla, rose quartz, citrine, or snowflake obsidian.  Use one as a “worry stone”.  A worry stone is a stone that you keep with you, and whenever you feel worried, stressed, or anxious, you take it out and rub it with your fingers.  You can also wear it in jewelry, bathe with it, or massage with it.

For depression, use amber, smoky quartz or citrine in any of the aforementioned ways.

To help control anger, keep a red garnet, amethyst, snowflake obsidian, or sodalite with you.  Take it out, hold it, and rub it whenever you feel the need.

Increase your brain power!

Use citrine, fluorite, lapis, pyrite, or sodalite to stimulate the intellect.

For focusing thoughts and concentration, use citrine, hematite, lapis, black tourmaline, or fluorite.

To bring mental clarity, use sapphire, peridot, or gold (Imperial) topaz.

To increase memory, use citrine, amber, black tourmaline, hematite, or fluorite.

Use amethyst, bloodstone, hematite, or lapis to relieve mental stress.

For help with problem-solving, use green tourmaline, or citrine.

To help with decision-making, use azurite, fluorite, or sodalite.

To use any of these “thinking” stones, wear them as earrings or a pendant, or place them on your desk or workspace.

Spark your creativity!

Carry or wear an amazonite, azurite, carnelian, chrysocolla, or citrine to get your creativity flowing.

Improve your communication skills!

Sodalite, sapphire, aquamarine, blue topaz, and chrysocolla are all great stones for communication.  Use them to bring self-confidence when public speaking, to help you to speak up for yourself, to be able to explain things in an easy to understand way, to overcome shyness, to be able to speak more clearly and freely , to be able to express yourself better emotionally, and to improve your relationships by keeping communication lines open.  These stones work best when worn as a pendant that hangs close to the throat, but they can also be worn as earrings, or held, or carried in your pocket.

Strengthen your intuition!

To do this, hold a moonstone, chrysocolla, or amazonite to your third eye (brow).

Meditate!

Meditation crystals can be held, placed on the third eye, or placed before you as a visual focal point.  These crystals include: clear quartz, amethyst, celestite, apophyllite, charoite, sugilite, azurite, labradorite, and yellow calcite.

To get in touch with your spirituality, use amethyst or charoite.

To gain wisdom, use amethyst, charoite, lapis, sodalite, or sugilite.

To ground yourself (bring yourself back to Earth) after meditating, hold a grounding stone such as, smoky quartz, black obsidian, snowflake obsidian, black onyx, hematite, or jet.

Feel better about yourself!

To increase your self-confidence and feelings of self-worth, use azurite, chrysocolla, aquamarine, ruby, moonstone, or rose quartz.

To raise your self-esteem, use hematite or rose quartz.

To improve your self-image, use moonstone, rose quartz, or pink kunzite.

To learn to love yourself, use rose quartz, rhodochrosite, or pink kunzite.

All of these stones can be held, worn, or carried.

Spread the love!

Rose quartz is THE love stone.  Use it to attract love; to increase romance; to strengthen love between friends, lovers, and family members; to make a friendship blossom; to mend a broken heart; and to keep any relationship balanced, peaceful, and loving.  No matter what the situation, if it has to do with love, rose quartz is the stone that does it all.   But there are, of course, other stones of love.

Here are just a few examples:

To attract love, use magnetite or a tantric twin.  A tantric twin (also called a soulmate stone) is a stone in which two crystals, such as clear quartz, amethyst, or citrine, of about the same size are joined together side by side.

To heal the heart, place pink agate, pink kunzite, or pink tourmaline over the heart, or wear as a pendant that hangs close to the heart.

To balance relationships, use peridot or rhodonite.

To increase or enhance loving feelings, use emerald, ruby, garnet, or diamond.

Love stones can be worn, carried, held, or bathed with.  Place them throughout a room or home to create a more loving atmosphere.  Put one next to your bed to increase romance and intimacy.

Add some spice to your sex life!

Use carnelian, garnet, or red tiger-eye to increase passion, sensuality, and eroticism.

To increase sexual energy and stamina, use carnelian, bloodstone, ruby, red garnet, or pink tourmaline.

Use carnelian to stimulate sexuality.

Use red jasper to prolong sexual pleasure.

Pink tourmaline will release inhibitions.

For lack of libido, use fluorite or red garnet.

Place them next to, on, or around the bed, or wear them as jewelry.

Bring abundance, prosperity, wealth, and success into your life!

For prosperity, place a citrine in the “wealth corner” of your home.  This is the corner to the left of and furthest away from the front door.  If this is where your bathroom is, do not put the stone in there, otherwise any wealth that you acquire will go right down the toilet!

Wealth comes in many forms other than money and material things.  Being surrounded by a loving family can make someone feel wealthy.  To bring wealth of any kind, wear or carry green aventurine, peridot, bloodstone, emerald, jade, or pyrite (fool’s gold).

Keep a green aventurine in your wallet or purse to make your money multiply.

Bring good luck!

Wear or carry a green aventurine or golden tiger-eye with you.

Bring a green aventurine with you to the casino.  Wear it in a pouch around your neck, keep it in your pocket, or hold it while you are playing.

A Crash Course in Warding

Let’s just start a series of crash courses in witchcraft, since sometimes we need to learn things the quick and dirty way. Today, let’s talk about wards.

What are wards? Wards are protective energy barriers. They keep things out. You can place them around your home, certain rooms, even on certain objects. With practice and clear intentions, you can focus the wards to block out everything or only certain things. We’ll get to that in a bit.

Why should I ward my space and my things? Wards can keep out all sorts of things you don’t want in your home. They can block out negative entities, wayward spirits, mischievous entities, demons, and (if you’re really good at what you’re doing) even gods. Some people ward their divination tools so they know there are no spirits tampering with the results.

So what do I need to do first? Cleanse. This is very important. Wards are kind of like walls, or perhaps more accurately, bubbles. If you don’t clean the space first, you might trap things inside your ward bubble. You do not want that. There are lots of methods of cleansing, from burning sage to spritzing oil-infused water. Find a method you’re comfortable with and cleanse everything you’re going to be warding.

I’ve cleansed my home/item. Now what? Now we ward. I’m going to give you a couple methods. Let’s start with my favorite, incense warding.

Incense warding can also be done with spritzes of water/essential oil blends or herb-infused water if you can’t have smoke in your space. Whichever you’re using, you want to have a blend of protective herbs. Bay leaves, cinnamon, ginger, mustard seed, and salt are some great options that you can find in the grocery store, no fancy witch shop necessary. If you’re using incense, make sure you’re using natural incense and not super cheap stuff that’s artificially scented. The magic is in the herbs, and you won’t get that from fake scents.

How to Incense/Spritz Ward an Item

Smoke or spray item.

Visualize the smoke or spray clinging to the item and wrapping around it like a tight blanket, protecting it from anything that would cause harm (or interference, etc.).

How to Incense/Spritz Ward Your Space

Pick a place to start. I always start at my altar, but it’s up to you. If you’re doing multiple floors, start either at the top or bottom floor.

Moving continuously to your right, smoke or spray along the walls and door frames. As you go, imagine a barrier being formed around the walls, ceiling, and floor, pushing outwards to fill the room. Visualize the smoke or spray forming the barrier to keep out anything that will do you harm. [If you have a hard time with visualization, you can simply focus on the intent of the smoke or spray keeping things out.]

Keep moving right, following the layout of your home, making sure you get all the closet spaces. You basically want to outline the entire area you’re protecting, whether it’s you’re room or your whole house.

For multiple floors, repeat on each level.

For big layouts where there are rooms in the middle, go around those rooms as well.

I like to reinforce the wards over outside doors, windows, and mirrors. These are all passages of sorts, and when I reach them, I use the incense to draw a pentagram in the air over them. This is entirely up to you.

You’re done when you’ve reached the point where you began.

So why do we go to the right? Is that important? Kind of. Going to the right is like going clockwise. It’s about making things and progression, where going to the left or counter-clockwise is about deconstruction or reversal. [I read this idea in a witchy book a long time ago and will try to find a source when I can. If you honestly don’t feel it makes a difference, do whatever you’re comfortable with.]

Can I place wards that keep out certain things but not others? Sure. When you’re going around your space/warding your item, your intent is what’s important. I like to ward out entities that mean harm - it’s nice and general and doesn’t keep the fae out. Some people might want certain spirits and not others. Have your intentions clear in your mind as you place your wards.

That’s neat and all, but what are some other ways to ward? Let’s list a few.

Symbol/Sigil Wards

Choose (or make) a symbol or sigil that has protective properties. I’ve done this with Pluto’s astrological symbol because I worship him and it’s my way of being like, “Hey, Pluto. Please protect me, kthanxbai.” Pentagrams are nice and basic witchy/pagan symbols if you like them.

Draw the symbol over doors and windows. You do not literally have to draw it. It can be in water, incense smoke, or just your finger against the surface if you want.

As you’re drawing, make sure you have your intentions in mind - that nothing harmful can pass through this door, that the windows remain closed against entities, etc.

Energy Bubbles (if you have control over your energy)

Pick an item - any item.

Get your warding intentions in mind.

Channel lots of energy into the item. Visualize it emanating from the item in a bubble to fill your space.

If you’ve got mad skillz, you can form the bubble to the walls and be super exact with where its barriers are.

Vocal Wards

If you like spoken (or thought) spells, come up with a small chant to protect your space.

You can repeat this chant as you focus on your item being protected or as you walk around your home, protecting every room.

This is really great to incorporate into basically any other form of warding and gives your magic an extra bit of oomph.

I’ve heard wards can “fade” over time. True or false? Wards are just energy. Like all energies, they can disperse and weaken over time, or if something particularly nasty puts effort into destroying them. Redo your wards every so often (I do mine every few months, but it’s up to you), and especially before spiritual interactions. I also like to do mine after I’ve had lots of company, to kind of clear out family’s lingering energies and reinforce what I don’t want in my house.

In general, the intent of your wards is the most important part. Know what you want to keep out. This concludes our crash course on warding. Now go forth and protect some stuff!

A Crash Course on Channeling

image

What is Channeling?

Channeling is allowing a nonphysical entity to use your physical body, in order to accomplish something. If that sounds, vague, it’s because it is. Channeling takes many different forms and intensity levels! Depending on how it’s done, it can be a medium-difficulty task or one of the most advanced things a spirit worker can do.

Types of Channeling

I once heard channeling described as a car ride, and in my experience that’s very accurate. The car is your body, and you’re in it with an entity. Sometimes you’re in the driver’s seat, and the entity is in the back seat giving directions. Sometimes you or the entity is in the passenger’s seat: not calling most of the shots, but able to reach over and grab the wheel if needed. Sometimes you’re in the backseat watching the entity drive, and sometimes you’re in the trunk. In practice, this can take a number of forms.

Speaking on Behalf. This is the kind of channeling people do most often. The entity isn’t controlling you, just feeding you lines which you can then relay to a third party. You’re translating their messages to something other people can comprehend. If you’ve ever answered a question for a spirit in their words, you’ve done this.

Isolated Channeling. The entity takes control of just a part of the body, usually the hands or fingers. This is mostly used for things like automatic writing.

Assuming Form. Also known as consensual possession. The entity is in the driver’s seat, speaking and acting for themselves without your help. Some people will call this “horsing.”

Possession. While the word “possession” could technically cover all of this, within the spirit work community it’s usually reserved for channeling where the human did not consent beforehand. This doesn’t necessarily mean in a violating way- I once had a friend who got possessed just long enough for an entity to yank them out of danger; once I was taken for just a moment to convey a quick (but very direct) message to a devotee, and snapped out of it right after.

Reasons to Channel

Everyone will have a different reason to channel but most of them fall under a few categories:

Helping Someone Else. You’re channeling on behalf of someone who can’t [easily] reach the entity themselves, in order to ease communication between the two parties. This is often seen with mediums contacting spirit guides and Ancestors.

Aid in Other Works. The entity is better suited to accomplish a certain task than you, so you let them take the lead. This is often seen with a familiar or spirit companion, someone the practitioner works with closely enough to know their strengths and trust them.

Easier Communication Overall. Channeling is a way to get really familiar with an entity’s energy. Again, we often see this with spirit companions and is more to bond than to achieve another goal.  This would include automatic writing or letting a spirit experience things “through” you.

Ritual Invitation. In some traditions, it’s common to invite deities to ritual events. Often, some type of channeling/possession is expected and is usually reached through ecstatic experiences. It’s taken as a sign the deity has arrived at the party, either a sign the offerings have been received or a time for the deity to convey important messages.

Before-You-Begin Essentials

Know How To Protect Yourself. This is non-negotiable. Is your discernment tuned enough to spot an impostor or malevolent entity? Do you know how to end a session early? Do you know how to banish a spirit in an emergency? If the answer is no, then study up and return to channeling when you’re ready.

Know Your Entity. Channeling, by nature, puts the practitioner in an intimate and vulnerable place, so you don’t want to give that access to an entity who may misuse it. If it’s your first time channeling, make sure you trust this entity with your life.

Don’t Channel Alone. When you channel, you’re in an altered state of consciousness. Having someone grounded near you helps keep the session on track and keep you out of trouble should you need it. (Either by forcing an entity out if needed or just keeping you from climbing that tree.)

Other Notes

It’ll Probably Take a Lot Out of You. Have something ready to ground and rehydrate yourself after a session, and make sure you don’t have anything high-demand planned after.

Start Small. No need to jump head-first into the most advancecd and high-intensity types of channeling! Start with automatic writing or painting and get used to the feeling and work your way up.

Don’t Make It Weird. Basic etiquette still matters. Channeling is not a pass to give unsolicited messages to other practitioners, speak on behalf of their deities to them (unless they’ve specifically asked), or say hurtful things cushioned by: “What? It wasn’t me who said it.”

Messages Are Rarely “Pure.” This means everything is still filtered through you, the practitioner. Your values, morals, biases, and beliefs can inform what messages get through and how they are conveyed. Nobody wants to send out a message they disagree with, after all. This becomes less of an influencing factor with experience as one learns to hone their skill and let go more, but it’s important to always keep in mind. (If a channeling friend says a deity doesn’t accept your gender identity or something, that’s a good sign that really your “friend” doesn’t accept it.)

General Etiquette for Working with the Dead

These are some of the guidelines I follow when working with the dead:

When entering a graveyard, be sure to greet and leave something for the guardian of the graveyard.

Never walk on the graves of the deceased.

Never take anything out of the graveyard without permission of the guardian or a specific grave’s resident.

Never take items people have left for their loved ones off the graves.

Only gather graveyard dirt from the perimeter of the graveyard, never from the graves themselves.

Upon leaving the graveyard, say farewell to the dead you encountered, and the guardian.

Never force the dead to work for you, if they are unwilling or unable to aid you try again later or try another spirit.

Be mindful of the dead’s beliefs in life, not all will be friendly to those who practice magic.

Give the dead the same respect and thought that you yourself would wish to be given.

Obey your local laws and ordinances regarding the dead and graveyards/burial sites.

There’s A Reason This Salt Dough Recipe Is The First Thing In My Grimoire. Very Few Tools Have Been

There’s a reason this salt dough recipe is the first thing in my grimoire. Very few tools have been quite as versatile as this. I have made offering bowls, a measuring spoon, a deity statue, runes… and I could go on.

Salt dough is wonderful for witchery because you make it yourself, it’s cheap af, you can make it with things you steal from the kitchen while you’re stealing McCormack herbs (don’t lie, you know you’ve done it), and it’s salt based which is like the witchiest of witch things.

The small discs on the page are my latest idea, which is outlined in the second note on the page. I mixed dried herbs into the salt dough, formed discs, let it dry, and now I’ve got these portable little magic herb discs. The ones on the page are basil and powdered sugar for drawing wealth at work. But the possibilities are endless. If you can make an herb sachet or powder, you can probably also make it a salt dough disc.

Witch tip: set these out on a dish to dry by your window to give it all that good sun and moonlight.
