Leon and Ada’s relationship is not ‘forced’: an essay

Here comes the Resident Evil 2 hype again in the wake of its Remake/Reimagination reveal trailers, and with it, all the most stupid complaints I can’t even begin to properly fathom from the shippers’ fanbase.

“Oh but Leon and Ada’s romance doesn’t make any sense, no one falls in love in such a short span of time”, “Leon and Ada’s bond is unrealistic and forced”…

And blah, blah, blah.

Yeah, sure, let’s talk about lack of realism for the romance sector in the same videogames franchise where you have to gun down giant infected zombie frogs. Seems reasonable.

But even so, despite the lore of the game so very distant from what exists in the real world, Leon and Ada’s connection makes sense in and out of its context. Especially in its context, which is the most important part.

Leon is a rookie cop whom, upon his first day in the force, is faced with a gruesome outbreak that wiped out the city almost completely. There are people, dead people, with their deteriorated human faces, attacking to kill. Skinless-only-flesh-blood-arteries-and-human-brain creatures who were once humans as well crawling the delegacy walls. Dead dogs with exposed fractured bones and popping eyes coming as fast as they can for a bite.

And then there’s this woman. “Civilian” woman who’s stuck in the parking garage. Sure, she’s hella attractive, weirdly mysterious, most certainly hiding a few cards of her game, but all he knows is that he wants to save someone – anyone – a human being instead of just shooting undead with HUMAN faces. He has to. He fell straight into this hell not knowing any better because he wanted to be a cop, didn’t he?!

He spends the next total, what? 4? 6? HOURS (maybe even more, since he entered the city by the very beginning of the evening in 09/29, and escaped with Sherry and Claire by dawn/morning of 09/30) trying any imaginable way to escape that shit hole city. Yeah, yeah, the woman runs off on her own like four times, but you have to remember she doesn’t know him at all. When he lectures her about their chances of escaping being improved if they paired up as a team, she seems a bit more inclined to stick with him. And then he takes a bullet in the shoulder for her because that’s what cops do, right? They protect civilians. After confronting Annette, she patches him up, tells him the boyfriend she was looking for is dead, and that they should get going. Escape.

Now, take Ada’s shoes for a sec. She is a secret agent, a spy, on a mission. To retrieve a G-Virus sample. She’s solely in this fucking place dealing with all this apocalyptic situation and the nightmare material monsters because she’s following orders, trying to do her job. She doesn’t need a cop breathing down her neck, delaying her mission’s fulfilment. Plus, she’s looking for the guy she’s been having an affair with the past few months, she expects he’s the one supposed to help her in this: getting her job done, so what good would do her having a cop meddle in all that?

She does her best trying to dismiss him, evade his “hey, let me help you, I’m a police officer, it’s my duty”, runs off, but he seems very serious about it, and what the hell? Maybe this will help her get to John sooner rather than later. Guy gets shot in the shoulder for her, doing his job. While she, doing her job, got stuck in this nightmare filled with horrifying shit that is going to last probably years in her subconscious. Her job is getting her neck in the line for something that is probably harmful to people and even society as a whole, but she doesn’t care (or at least, she’s not supposed to), she does what she’s got to do. His job, on the other hand, involves saving her life, even if demands risking his own well-being for it.

The two are set on escaping, then. They find this cable car that can get them to descend into Umbrella’s lab. Maybe they can find an escape route there. On their way down she gets attacked by a mutated monster, is severely wounded by said monster, but Leon is still very much concerned with her safety, rejecting her pleas for him to move on without her.

Next time they see each other, even though she’s in Umbrella’s Underground Laboratory now, probably already got her hands on that damn sample she needed and should just LEAVE since, again, she’s severely wounded – she finds the time to save him. She’s grabbed and raised in the air like a doll by this massive creature who doesn’t even flinch at her repeatedly shooting at it. Gets thrown in a metal panel, now mortally wounded, and confesses she fell in love with him. In Leon A route, she confesses she wished she could escape with him from… everything.

No need to say that everything doesn’t narrow down to only Raccoon City and their current situation, right?! But also, what got her there in the first place.

Plus, she helps him one more time with a rocket launcher so he can finally leave. Escape this mess. He asks if it’s her. He hopes it is.

Now, if you ever fell in love, you know that things such as chemistry and attraction don’t need YEARS to happen. It can happen in a matter of few hours, maybe minutes or even seconds. It can happen instantaneously. But now, imagine being saved by the person you feel attracted to. Quite literally. Having your life saved by your “crush”.

It affects you, deeply. Changes you. Changes your outlook on life. Changes what you feel. Ada’s entire identity is shaken by Leon jumping in to stop that bullet. Leon’s entire identity is shaken by those final hours with her – the conflict of having Annette planting a seed of suspicion in his trust that he’s doing the right thing and saving a decent, innocent civilian and then witnessing this same person sacrificing herself to save him from the monster that has been hunting him on and off again the entire night. That traumatic, awful, life-changing night.

That’s why he says she’s like a part of him he can’t let go of. That’s why one and a half decade later, he’s pointing his gun at Chris to protect a woman who looks identical to her not knowing better that isn’t her. That’s why Ada disobeys Wesker express orders to execute Leon and saves him so many times you could say she’s his guardian angel.

They changed each other. In that life-changing nightmare of a night.

You fall in love by much less than that. You can literally fall in love by just an affectionate smile at a loud party. With just a conversation.

Resident Evil is not “unrealistic” with Leon and Ada’s connection. Much like it isn’t with Claire and Sherry’s one, who built a mother-daughter bond that lasts to this day.

That’s it. People should get their shit together and come up with better and more honest excuses for not liking the canon romance for these characters in this franchise.

“Forced” is saying that this other girl who most definitely never showed any romantic interest for him whatsoever is better as his pair because she’s “morally” worthy of him. I’m not even gonna tackle how misogynistic this is, but since when love is primarily concerned with a moral compass? Would be better if it was, sure, but very rarely it is. And Ada is not anywhere near aligned with the bad guys when it comes to moral standards, this is clear in the games.

Cut the crap, really. I’m exhausted. Ship whatever you wanna ship, just don’t be intellectually dishonest and CLEARLY derogatory while doing so.

There are plenty of underdeveloped and forced couples in fiction that mysteriously got the canon status out there to pick on. Ada/Leon is not one of them. Shoo. Get a grip of yourselves and stop replying to all Capcom’s tweets and official social media publicity that features Leon and Ada with those stupid, nonsensical opinions no one asked for. 

PS: Last time Leon appeared in canon he was 36 years old. Maybe even older if we start speculating when Vendetta can be placed in the chronology. He’s a grown man who’s more than capable to analyse and sort things out on his own, not a baby who needs to be protected from that “devil woman”, Ada. Actually, in 1998 he’s 21, not a teen. He’s a man there. An inexperienced one, alright, but an adult man. Stop the misogynistic idiocy of always demanding the female character to be held accountable for everything.

PS2: By the way, the other girl, the more “morally worthy”, has a taste for morally ambiguous baddies herself. So, yeah. Guess she doesn’t want to use her mom instincts in a relationship with Leon.

Shooting and killing the dog attacking him - the one that’s literally seconds away from doing away with him

Running over Mr X when he’s about to choke Leon out

Blowing up Mr X when he’s about to come back to life

This one is a bit iffy, but legit crouching over Leon’s prone body after he gets shot to shoot back at their attacker? Very sexy. She looks very protective there 1000/10

Patching him up after he gets shot so he doesn’t bleed out, despite the fact that it sets her back in her own pursuits

Giving him a rocket launcher that helps him kill an otherwise unkillable monster he’s trapped with

Saving Leon from getting choked out by shooting his captor

Leaving him useful items in re4, from weapons to info to puzzle pieces

Not shooting him in the back and killing him when she had direct orders to do so in re4

Preventing other people from killing him when she has direct orders to kill him herself - saving him from getting stabbed by Krauser - literally rushing to Leon after she hears about Krauser’s involvement

Saving both Leon and Ashley from Osmund Saddler when he goes to save Ashley by first shooting at Saddler as Saddler tries to to kill Leon and then

Preventing Saddler from going after Leon and Ashley by exploding the exit he flees out of, effectively trapping her in the room with a deranged person

Helping Leon find the cure to his and Ashley’s infection - also helping Luis Sera do the same

Not killing Leon when he’s choking her out. Which isn’t really saving him but damn, Leon’s lucky he only got stabbed in the leg

Providing background support for Leon when he’s fighting on multiple occasions (but most notably in re4 and re6)

Giving him another rocket launcher to help him defeat a (once again) unkillable monster that would otherwise be impossible to defeat

Giving him the keys to a jetski that helps not only Leon but also Ashley escape from an island about to explode

Shooting Deborah Harper as she’s mutating. Debatable, but I’m going to count it anyways. One could even argue that it was Helena she was saving

Giving Leon a ring which he uses to escape from a whole horde of zombies about to murder him later on. A ring which also provides him a way out of the catacombs and frees him and Helena from being trapped underground

Helping Leon and Helena fight Deborah, despite no actual benefit to herself, considering she could have legit just walked right around their battle and continued on her merry way without even letting Leon know she was there

Helping Sherry and Jake fight off infected and the chainsaw mutant

Saving Sherry Birkin from the chainsaw mutant by using her grappling hook and grabbing her out of the way

Helping random civilians on (by my admittedly shoddy count) two to three occasions? In re6 when they’re being attacked by infected in the streets.

Saving hundreds of thousands of people by defeating Carla Radames

Appearing in her helicopter after she’s presumed dead to save Leon and Helena from getting cornered by a small army of infected. Shooting at the groups of infected until Leon and Helena get to safety

Helping Leon and Helena defeat Simmons for the first time around while she’s in the helicopter 

Saving dozens of civilians on the rooftops when they’re being attacked by the enemies

Helping Leon and Helena to defeat Simmons the second time around

- Helping Leon and Helena climb the building without getting torn from the rope by Simmons (providing background support as they’re climbing)

- Fighting Simmons on her own in multiple instances while Leon and Helena provide backup support

- Saving Leon’s life every time he’s downed (which is up to the player and the gameplay, of course)

Fighting off Simmons (dropping him from the roof) when he’s seconds away from knocking Leon from the building and causing him to drop to his death 

Possibly saving even more people by killing Simmons’ next mutant experiment and exploding his labs

Giving Leon yet another rocket launcher to defeat a mutated creature that would otherwise be impossible to kill and who would probably kill thousands of other people if left alive, including Leon and Helena

Giving Leon a helicopter that will gave him a straight shot out of an infected and doomed city

Providing Leon with the means to not only prove his own innocence and Helena’s innocence, but to also put Simmons away and prevent him from hurting anymore people

Making the elevators work in Damnation so Leon and Buddy can escape despite, once again, no possible benefit to herself. This action, btw, involved her risking her life to stay in a place where her cover was blown to hack into the palace servers of the president and get the elevators working - in a building overrun by Lickers, Infected, and X mutants.

Edit: + that time Kendo had a shotgun on Leon and Ada swoops in to save him

Edit: + Let us also not forget that she didn’t follow through with shooting anybody when Leon asked her not to

Edit: + Dropping the ladder for Leon after the Birkin fight. It doesn’t exactly save him, but it’s certainly extremely helpful

Edit: + In RE2 OG (Leon B), Ada shoots at Mr X to draw him away from a cornered Leon at her own risk and then later throws him the rocket launcher to defeat Mr X. AND, 

Edit: + in Claire B, Ada still throws the rocket launcher - only its to Claire - despite them having never met! This allows Claire to defeat Mr X and survive

these are only the ones I can think of off the top of my head. if anybody remembers any others please let me know!

It’s Halloween night and you come across Alucard at the bar. You don’t take him seriously when he says he’s a vampire because everyone dresses up as a vampire for Halloween. That was your biggest mistake.

This is also my first time writing. Bear with me here.

It was Halloween and there was no better way to celebrate than by getting plastered at your local bar. You decided to wear a vampire costume this year. You were usually very creative with your outfits, but you were feeling a bit lazy this year.

You stumbled your way to the bar, the alcohol already clouding your mind. You spot a man sitting at the bar. He had broad shoulders and long black hair. His aura should be intimidating to anyone, but not to you. Maybe you were too drunk to notice his glowing eyes as you took a seat next to him.

“What are you supposed to be?” You ask while flagging down the bartender for another drink.

He looks you up and down taking in your painfully obvious vampire outfit. He finds it amusing how you’ve found yourself in the presence of a true vampire who could snap your neck like a twig without second thought.

“Why I’m a vampire of course. The best one around.” His voice comes out like velvet.

You take a minute to examine him. He was wearing a black long sleeve shirt that had chains and buckles attached to it along with a pair of black leather pants. If you didn’t know any better you’d think he was in a gimp costume.

“Did you choose a vampire from a movie? I’m going as one of Dracula’s wives!” You state proudly.

“Oh no, young lady I’m an original vampire. Not one of those ones you see in media,” he offers a menacing smile.

You don’t pick up on his menacing aura. You were far too drunk to notice the situation you were in. You naively show off your plastic fangs to him.

“I finally got these to stay on! One fell off in my drink earlier,” you raise your cup for emphasis, “had to fish it out and put it back on.”

“Fangs really set the whole outfit together don’t they? But…” he leans in close to you until your noses are touching and the smell of a cigar on his breath fans your face, “these aren’t fake.”

Now up close you can see his eyes are a deep crimson shade and seem to be giving off a faint glow. You were amazed by his dedication to the outfit realizing you forgot contacts of your own.

“I think you’ll find my fangs are far more durable than yours,” he traces his finger over the pulse in your neck.

His touch was like ice and sent shivers straight down your spine. The look in his eyes should’ve been enough to make you run, but you didn’t. Whether it be you were drunk or too stupid to sense the danger you were in.

“May I touch them?” You innocently ask as you wonder how he got them to stay on all night.

His eyes darken at your request, “why of course, little one,”

You don’t notice the way the glow in his eyes seems to intensify. You’re only focused on his fangs and how sharp they are. Much sharper than your store bought ones.

You slowly raise your arm to his fang and run the pad of your finger across it. He waited until seemed content with touching his fang before he bit your finger hard enough to draw blood.

You let out a shocked gasp and yank your finger away. You see your blood coating his razor sharp teeth. The action had caused you to sober up a significant amount.

“What the hell?” You angrily ask.

He turns to you with a feigned innocence plastered on his face, “I’m sorry doll. Did I bite too hard?” He licked the blood off his teeth.

Your blood ran cold. Something about his tone made every nerve in your body scream at you to run. You gathered your purse and slammed some money on the counter.

“Uh, nice meeting you. I think I’ve had my fun here,” you stammer over your words quickly putting distance between the two of you.

“That’s a shame. I haven’t had my fill yet,”

His words paralyzed you on the spot. You knew you had to get out. And you needed to get out now. You push past the sea of bodies crowding around the bar. You quickly lost sight of him and began looking for the exit. Once in your sight, you wrapped your sweaty hand around the cool metal bar and pushed.

The cool night air surrounded you and offered you relief from the panic you were feeling. You looked around and found that you took the alley exit, much to your dismay. Your car was around the building. As you begin to make your way to the safety of your car, you hear crunching gravel behind you. You whip around to see no one there.

“Fuck I’m being paranoid,” you think to yourself.

Then you hear it again, this time to your right. You spin around to see the man from inside the bar. Your eyes widen in terror. His menacing aura was felt by you. It was so strong your knees began to shake.

He didn’t give you time to speak before he began, “you know what I find interesting about the human body?” He begins circling you.

“There’s so many efficient ways to drain them of blood. My favorite though,” he stops right behind you, his breath tickling your neck, “is the throat.”

You shiver as his breath fans your sensitive neck. He presses his chest against your back and moves your hair to the side to gain full access to your bare throat.

“Please stop,” your voice comes out as a whisper.

“But we’ve just begun, little one.”

He lowers his mouth to your neck. Your panic begins to set in at full force. You pull yourself away from him and begin to run ignoring the pain your heels were causing your feet. Within a blink of an eye he lunged at you sending you crashing into the cold gravel beneath you.

He grabs both of your arms to effortlessly pin them above your head as he straddles you, “this won’t hurt,” he lets out a deep laugh that rumbles within his chest, “try not to scream.”

Before you could open your mouth to scream, his large hand covers your mouth leaving just his other hand to pin down both of yours. He can’t help but think of how pathetic you look under him. You looked absolutely terrified with tears brimming in your eyes. He wanted to see you cry. It was a sight he found most beautiful.

“Go on. Cry for me. Beg me to stop. Beg me to spare you,” he removed his hand from your mouth to see what you’d do.

You immediately try to call for help. He’s quick to silence you again, more forcefully this time. His hand engulfs the whole lower part of your face reminding you of just how small you are in comparison to him.

He watches the tears that fall from your eyes. He’s delighted to see such a beautiful little thing cry tears for him. He leans his face close to yours before darting his tongue out to lick your salty tears. He lets out a satisfied hum.

“Be a good girl and don’t make this too messy,”

His fangs graze the soft skin of your neck and you whimper. It was music to his ears. He gave a gentle nibble to see what other sounds he could pull from your mouth. He wasn’t disappointed when another whimper graced his ears.

Your blood was pumping so quickly now. He couldn’t contain himself. He sunk his teeth into your neck eagerly lapping up the sweet blood your veins offered him.

You clenched your fists in pain and tried to bite your lip, but his hold on your face made it hard to do much else, so you were left with letting out grunts of pain and muffled cries.

“Yes that’s it. Sing for me,” he had a crazed look now.

Your blood dripped from his mouth down his chin. He was quick to lick the blood from his chin, not wanting to waste any of your sweet gift.

He let go of your mouth. He wanted to hear all the sounds you were going to make for him as he feasted on your blood.

He ignored your pleas as he bit into your skin again. He had no intention of stopping this time. He greedily drank from you while your cries pierced the night.

You really were the best meal of his life.
