Mitsuya hates white lilies.

His mother’s friends, Touman members, your family, the people who went to school with you and him… They sent a bunch of them. Bouquets of white lilies decorated the room and all Mitsuya wanted to do was burn them to the ground.

He hates white lilies. He realizes that the moment he entered the room to see a ton of them littered around, surrounding your casket.

He stops by the entryway, nose scrunching up in distaste at the smell. Hakkai places a hand on his shoulder, as if urging him to continue on and to stop him from backing out. Mitsuya wouldn’t have backed out, he wouldn’t have not come. He wanted to see you, maybe for at least one last time. It’s the least he could ever do.

There were no tears in his eyes when he entered nor when he walked to the other side of the room as people watched him, whispered about him as Hakkai took a few steps back to give him space.

No. The tears only sprung out when he finally stood in front of the casket that held you resting peacefully. It started out small, small little droplets like raindrops in a drizzle. And then he was biting on his lip, shoulders shaking, trying to stop the sobs from leaving his mouth as he gazed at the picture where you were smiling.

Propped up on the very center for everyone to see. A field of grass with a big oak tree at the far back. The sun was setting behind the camera, obvious from how the skies were a pretty mix of purple pink and how it painted you orange.

Mitsuya remembered that picture. He was the one who took it. In the summer two years ago, first year of highschool, when he took you out for a picnic. The clothes you wore were loose, flowing with the wind, hair ruffled as you smiled with your eyes closed, the shine of the sun hitting you perfectly, that you looked golden.

You were beautiful.

It was what made him finally break down.

He was falling to his knees before he could stop himself, trembling with so much anger and pain. Hakkai was trying to help him up, bring him back, but Mitsuya was spiralling. He didn’t care about the whispers nor the stares, he was mourning. He was mourning, he was losing you, he already lost you.

Mitsuya hates white lilies and summertimes and he will forever do so. It’ll remind him of what he lost and the vivid day that brings back only bittersweet memories.

This was the third funeral he’d ever attended.

The first one was Baji’s. Someone he watched grew up, someone he watched joke around and bring up the idea of creating a gang with Mikey as the leader. Someone he watched die.

The second one was his first love, Emma. Someone he loved from the very start, from the moment he met her, from the moment he saw her. Someone he wanted to grow old with, someone he wanted to protect and take care of.

The third one was the person who helped him stand back up after his fall from the tower after Emma’s passing. The person who was always there, patiently holding his hand even when he didn’t ask them to. The person who he gradually fell in love with. Not because he didn’t love Emma, but rather because he respected her wishes to be happy.

The person that was you.

You who grabbed his hand when Mikey walked his own path. You who reminded him that yesterday was over but there was still tomorrow to look forward to. You who taught Draken how to love again.

Draken feels sick as he sits on the same spot he did years ago, more than a decade ago. At the very front with his back straight, shoulders high, fists clenched on his lap as silent tears trail down his cheeks.

Years had passed but he felt fifteen again, losing the person he loved the most. The person that had carved a place in his heart, so deeply that nothing could ever replace it.

You didn’t replace Emma and Draken didn’t love you like how he loved Sano. But it didn’t change the fact that he loved you still. You weren’t Emma and Emma wasn’t you. He was well aware of that. But it never did change his feelings for you.

Emma carved a part in his heart, and you did the same on the other side. But just like Emma, you left it bleeding as well. Left it bleeding and dying, with nothing to ever heal it.

Where had he gone wrong? What had he done wrong? Why does he keep on losing the people he loved? Why does he keep on losing everyone dear to him?

Cursed.

He was cursed.

Ken sits there, not knowing how much time has passed. Not noticing anything happening around him, not knowing anything. Only the fact that you were gone and he’s now forced to be alone once more. Now forced to drown.

This time, there’s no one like you who’ll come around his life ever again.

How many tsuyas had he attended? How many more does he have to attend? How many people does he still have to lose?

Shinichiro, Baji, Emma, fuck even Izana. And now you?

Manjirou had attended too many, far too many one should attend in such a short life, in such a young age. Far too many funerals that were for the people he loved, the people he wanted to save and protect, the people he wanted to save him.

Once upon a time, Mikey had a lot of people with him. His family, his Touman, his love. All these people that surrounded him, so many people that cared. And then they slowly start to leave, slowly start to pass the bridge, to the point that Mikey starts avoiding the rest because he doesn’t want to see any more people leave before him.

Once upon a time, Mikey had a lot of people with him.

And then there were none.

Because the moment he lost all of them, Mikey lost himself as well. Manjirou was nothing without them. So there was no one left. Only a husk of who he once was.

Manjirou sits there, holding a white chrysanthemum. A flower for grief and goodbyes. A flower he offers you for the last time.

He remembers. The first flower he had ever gifted you was a red chrysanthemum, handed to you with a soft smile at the tender age of fourteen. A symbol of love, a great contrast to its white counterpart.

Back then, Mikey thought that he would never lose you. That death had missed you by an inch. That Emma was the last person to be taken from him. That he would be with you forever and a day more.

He was wrong because now he sits in that room, not caring that people were suspiciously looking at him. He may be Bonten’s leader but he’s your lover first and foremost. He falls deeper into the darkness with no you to help him back up as people watch him cautiously, ready to call authorities.

They didn’t need to worry. The only person he’s going to kill today is himself.

And then there were none.

author’s note — yes, i’m totally late for the party and its not even fashionable in any way. but i still want to celebrate it because hanemiya kazutora deserves the world. (@walhalla i’m gonna need a spare brain, mine is still fried)

there are times when you’d notice your boyfriend spacing out. considering how overwhelming his life has been, kazutora cant help but feel lost sometimes, in life and thought. so when he leaves your shared bed in the middle of the night for a long ride, you dont question his action at all. you’d wait for his return, fully aware of his search for a sense of peace you’re unable to provide.

one of the times when his aimless wanders would go further than any others is the night before his birthday. you’ve been together for years, but on every morning of 16th july, you’d find his side of the bed cold, as if he’d never been there at all. he’d then come home with a fake smile plastered on his face, and your heart broke into pieces.

when the next 15th july rolled around, you prepared yourself yet again. except it didnt happen like you’ve expected. that night, kazutora held your hand in his slightly trembling one, eyes dancing with a mixture of emotion, ‘come with me?’. you didnt even bother to change out of your night dress.

and as the memory of the wind howling alongside blinding headlights, roads and sceneries gradually became unfamiliar and fast beating of your boyfriend’s heart underneath your embrace burned to your mind, you felt like you’ve entered a fragment of his world that he had kept hidden away.

'we’re here’, he said as you scanned the unknown land. the 'here’ in front of you presented itself in the form of a vast grassy field on a cliff overlooking the sea. the stars above accompanied your long, silent night of waiting. and if he didnt caress your fingers with his callous ones, you’d thought that he had forgotten that you’re there at all. before long, the world faded away as you drown in the sound of his heartbeat next to your ear.

morning greeted you with feathery kisses by the salty breeze and warmth of your boyfriend’s jacket that had shielded you from the chill of the previous night. 'good morning’, you sat up, expecting nothing in return. only to feel his lips connected to yours in a long, delicate kiss, it left you breathless.

'another year for me to live’, kazutora sighed softly, a familiar emptiness in his eyes. a silent 'another year i dont deserve’ left unuttered. caressing your fingers for a few moments, he continued, 'i’m sorry i made you wait for so long. i-’. you captured his lips in a desperate kiss, wanting him to stop thinking, needed him to.

'i’ll wait for you forever. as long as you need, i’ll be there for you’. your eyes met his in a pool of tears. 'so dont ever apologize!’, your voice broke, and his own tears that he had been holding back spilled down his cheeks in a steady, unstoppable flow.

'is it really okay for me to keep living?’. instantly, he’s in a tight embrace you’ve pulled him into, whispering, 'more than okay’. you kept holding him close as he wailed his heart out until he’s reduced to a delicate, sniffling mess.

on your laps, his eyes were puffy from crying for too long, dried tears on his red cheeks. but there’s a soft smile on his lips as he gazed up at you. 'you can say it now’.

his smile widened to the sound of your sweet laughter that makes his heart flutter every time. leaning down to place a kiss on the tip of his nose, you felt your own heart skipping a beat. 'happy birthday, my love. thank you for being in my life for another year’.

kazutora caressed your chin with his thumb, intertwining your fingers with his in another hand. 'no. thank you for being in my life at all’. connecting your lips with his once again, he’s finally found his peace.

「 Mikey 」

Mikey’s baffled at the fact that you’ve never celebrated your birthday. 

It’s painful just thinking about no one wishing him happy birthday, seeing as he's an attention whore.

This birthday is going to be the best birthday you ever have, well it’ll be the best with anything he does seeing as you've done absolutely nothing for the past ones.

He came to you the morning of your birthday to tell you happy birthday and you thanked him with a kind smile. It was the first time hearing that for the day and it’s already 11am. 

Your parents left without a word that morning, they seemed in a hurry from the way they passed you on their way out as if you didn't exist.

He was good at distracting you for the day as the others prepared the party for you back at his place.

They also complained, not because they had to prepare the party, but because mikey wasn't doing any hard work. He left them to do everything, offering to distract you.

At exactly 8pm on the dot, mikey offered you to sleep at his place. On your way there, you were both silent, the only sounds being heard were the cars driving by and the slight gust of the wind dancing around you.

From the corner of your eye, you saw mikey’s lips converting to a soft smile. What’s he smiling about?

It didn't take much to see the lights up ahead, they were practically blinding. No doubt they’ll attract moths if they happen to fly by. 

If it weren't for the not so quiet, they’re here, and mikey's displeased sigh, you wouldn't have the slightest clue of what's behind the gate. “Baji’s an idiot.”

Opening the gate, your friends, both the ones apart of toman and the ones you made through them, jumped out from their hiding spots and shouted, happy birthday.

They looked ridiculous due to the tiny party hats on their heads, every one of them, the only exceptions being luna and mana because of their small selves, but nonetheless, you felt a surge of gratitude towards everyone there.

Luna, mana, emma and hina were the firsts to pull you in for a hug, followed by hakkai, mitsuya, and the others. You were overflowing with happiness and they all knew it by your eagerness when taking part in all the activities they planned.

Mikey following right behind you, same eagerness in tow, matching your own, all to see you that smile on your face.

In the comfort of his bed with his right hand holding you to his chest and his left intertwined with your own, you broke the silence by softly saying, “I had a lot of fun today mikey.”

「 Chifuyu 」

When your birthday came around the corner, chifuyu was extremely excited, it being your first birthday as a couple.

He had everything planned for your birthday a week prior, although it wasn’t much he had planned, it was extremely cute.

The first stop was at a bakery then he’s taking you to the carnival that was in town for the day and at the end, at the top of the ferris wheel, he was going to be all sappy and tell you how much he loves you.

But you weren't as ecstatic about it as him which was concerning leading him to ask the question.

“Why aren’t you in the birthday mood? It’s tomorrow y’know?” 

“You see babe, my parents think it’s unnecessary and a waste of money to throw birthday parties or give gifts, so I've never really celebrated my birthday?” Your answer came out more of a question than a solid response.

“Never?” He asked in disbelief and you simply nodded. He thought your parents were odd for not doing that, the bare minimum, it’s not like they were struggling financially or some other thing came up.

“Not even when you were little? Do they even tell you happy birthday?” You laughed at him, his face clearly surprised by the fact. “Never chifuyu and no they don’t tell me happy birthday. None of us do, we just go on with our day whenever someone’s birthday turns up.” 

He doesn't exactly know what to say at the moment other than he’s sorry, but you reassure him that it’s honestly ok, it’s really not his fault and there’s nothing he can do about it. You’re also used to it by now so your birthday is considered to be just another day to everyone around you, nothing special.

Sure, he couldn't do anything about it in the past but he’s your amazing boyfriend who can do something about it now. Yes, he already had the day planned but wouldn’t it be better for you to experience a small get together with all your friends who were in toman to show you even more love?

Truthfully he preferred his original plan. The idea of spending the entire day with you sounded like heaven but baji convinced him to do otherwise, wanting to celebrate your birthday also.

They both planned everything with slight help from their friends, and on the day, chifuyu did in fact take you to the carnival, he even won a giant teddy bear for you, but you didn't stay too long because he had a big surprise.

Covering your eyes, he has the widest smile on his face as he shuts down all your objections of not wanting any more surprises for your birthday.

"No I can't tell you. It's a surprise for a reason."

"I don't want a surprise though."

"I never asked but we're here." Chifuyu could be so rude sometimes, but he brought you to a party, a birthday party, with all your friends present.

"My favourite person!!" You knew all too well who that was.

"Hi baji." You knew he has a soft spot for you, he just doesn't want to admit it.

"Happy birthday [nickname]."

"Thank you baji." He took you in for a bear hug practically crushing you in his arms, only letting go when you gasped out, I can't breathe.

Chifuyu on the other hand was anxiously awaiting your response to his little surprise, but it never came. You were dragged away by emma and a few of the others before you could say anything, but guessing by your smile that never faltered, not even once, he knows he did a good job.

Until later that evening when everyone left, leaving both you and your boyfriend behind.

"Did you–"

"I loved it! I didn't get the chance to tell you earlier but I loved it!" Practically tackling him, you both fell onto the floor with a hard thud. The pain rushing through him was burning, but seeing and hearing your happiness made him forget about that.

「 Sanzu 」

Upon hearing about this, sanzu didn't say anything. He gave you a curt nod and left. It’s convenient that you never expect much from anyone, and it being your birthday and all, his cold response didn’t shift your mood or hurt you in the slightest. 

After all, you weren’t remotely new to this sort of reaction around this time of the year.

Your day went like it usually would, the only difference being, you haven't seen your boyfriend since earlier that day but that wasn't out of the ordinary considering his loyalty towards toman or more specifically a certain leader.

You haven't been dating that long either, you knew each other for a fair amount of time before that though.

To your surprise, before you could get into bed that night, you got a phone call from non-other than your boyfriend informing you to meet him at a location he’s about to send to you. 

Was he calling for another late night conversation? But he would’ve come by here like he usually does. Or is he injured again? 

While on your way, you couldn't help but overthink all the possible things he called you out to this unknown place for, but the figure in a toman uniform up ahead stopped your train of thought.

There he was, standing idly, his back facing you as he looked out into the quiet sea ahead of him.

You couldn't help but notice a small gift box wrapped in your favourite colour behind his back. Despite you both knowing each other for a generous amount of time, you never told him your favourite colour. Coincidence maybe?

“Why did you call me out here?” Facing you, he gave you a closed eye smile, the same one you would often see whenever he saw you first thing in the morning. “Happy birthday y/n.”

Taking the box in hand, you unwrapped it to find a jewellery box. He gifted you a silver necklace with a pendant of your favourite animal. “I thought you didn’t care?”

“Who said that?” He scoffed at you, you really thought he didn't care? Although he hasn’t said it outwardly yet, he loved you too much to not care about your birthday and just let it pass by as if it never existed.

“It just seemed that way by your response.” Taking the necklace from your hand, he turned you around and placed it around your neck. “It’s a locket.”

Sanzu opened the locket from behind you and you came to see a picture of the two of you from your first date. You laughed at the memory, remembering what you had to do to get the picture. Shower him with kisses. That was one of the few times he acted remotely affectionate towards you.

“You said you never celebrated your birthday, so I wanted to give you a gift.” His motive is what made a few tears slip past your eyes and down your face, dropping onto the back of sanzu’s hand.

“Why are you crying?” He giggled, finding you adorable for crying about something so simple as a birthday gift.

“This is my first time– I’ve gotten a birthday gift and it’s so... beautiful.” You were babbling as tears cascaded and made a path down the sides of your face. Taking a look at your horrible state, sanzu pulled you into his chest and stroked the back of your head lovingly. “I hope you take care of it.”

“I will.” Of course you would. After all, it was your first ever gift, to top it off from your boyfriend who you couldn't help but love too much to the point it was sickening at times.

“Come. I hope you didn’t have anything to do tonight, we’re going to your favourite to get food with mucho and a few of the others.”
