I just found out that in Irish myth butterflies are a message of the faeries, a sign of metamorphosis of the spirit waiting to be reborn. The butterfly's meaning can be good or bad depending on the colour.

The Merlin writers could've been foreshadowing the huge change about to happen with Arthur's death as well as using the butterfly to show Merlin's happiness at having his magic back. They were possibly geniuses or I'm just reading into it too much

If they had filmed Arthur's reincarnation, it would've been really cool if that butterfly showed up again 🦋
