Irish Mythology

VOL 13

Aine Goddess of Fertility

Áine, the legendary Irish Goddess, is the Celtic Goddess of Summer and Wealth who, while known for her healing nature, also had a dark side, as she became famous for how she took revenge on a cruel Irish king.

Áine, pronounced ‘awn-ya’, was a legendary Irish goddess who was said to represent the sun, fertility, and love. She was also said to possess the power to grant a bountiful harvest.

Áine has always been associated with the west of Ireland and with County Limerick in particular, where there is Knockainey Hill, Cnoc Áine in Irish, which was named in her honour.

Interestingly, her name is also remembered in other locations throughout the country, such as Toberanna (Tobar Áine) in Tyrone, Lissan (Lios Áine) in Derry, and Dunsany (Dun Áine) in Louth.

Before she became known as Áine the Irish Goddess, Áine was already special as she was the daughter of a Sea God called Manannán.

She was known and well-liked for her healing nature and knowledge of natural remedies and was widely seen as a symbol of hope and love that people adored.

Áine was said to be very beautiful, and as such, it was said that she had many different lovers who would be consumed by her passion. It was also said that she had a very vengeful nature that was to be feared if provoked.

However, it was her tragic interaction with the cruel king of Munster, Oilill Olum, and its aftermath which forged her place in history as an important figure of Irish legend.

Oilill Olum, otherwise known as Ailill Ollamh or Ailill Aulom, was the semi-mythological King of Munster who had a huge problem.

He made the shocking discovery that the grass in his many fields simply would not grow, which meant that soon his livestock and people would starve and die.

Oilill Olum sought the help of a Druid called Ferchess, who instructed him to go to Knockainey on Samhain Eve, better known as Halloween.

When Oilill Olum arrived there, he suddenly fell into a deep sleep and had a vision of Áine, who came to him as she was the Goddess of bountiful harvests and fertility.

When Oilill Olum met Áine, instead of listening to the Goddess and heeding her advice, Oilill Olum was overcome with lust and desire and forced himself onto her.

During this assault, Áine, of course, became outraged and exacted immediate revenge by biting off his ear.

This act would go on to have huge ramifications for Oilill Olum because, according to ancient Irish law, only a person who is “unblemished” would be allowed to rule.

By biting off his ear, the mythical Goddess had forever maimed Oilill Olum, and he lost his kingdom as he was now deemed by ancient Irish law to be unfit ever to rule again as he was now imperfect.

From that time on, the surname of the king, Olum, became known as meaning “one-eared” in Irish.

Surprisingly despite this, his descendants, who went on to become known as the Eoghanachta, became a powerful Irish dynasty based in the Cashel area in Tipperary that dominated and controlled the southern part of Ireland for many years.

This fact helped the legend of the Goddess Áine to grow wide as she became associated with having the ability to grant power and sovereignty.

Áine was also widely known as the Queen of the Fairies and as Áine Chlair (Áine of the Light). Rites in her honour were held regularly as recently as 1879, where Midsummer rituals were performed by locals in hopes of encouraging fertility and bountiful harvests.

The legacy of Áine the Irish Goddess is still strong today as she is remembered as being among one of the most revered and most powerful of the Irish Goddesses.  She is also remembered for how she took revenge on a terrible king who wronged her.

Most of all, Áine, the Goddess of Healing, Goddess of Sovereignty and Goddess of Sun, will probably be remembered for the duality of her personality.

This is because she was both loving and caring whilst also being quick to get angry and vengeful. Now, she is remembered in the places that bear her name. Knockainey Hill, Toberanna, Lissan and Dunsany.

VOL 6 Abhartach the Dwarf King - The Irish VAMPIRE

The Legend of Abhartach

In the shadowed valleys of ancient Ireland, where mist clung to the gnarled oaks and legends whispered through the heather, there existed a chieftain named Abhartach. His name, meaning “dwarf,” belied the darkness that consumed his heart. Abhartach ruled over a desolate realm, a land where the sun dared not linger, and the moon itself seemed to shiver.

Abhartach was no ordinary ruler. His eyes held secrets—secrets that danced between life and death. His malevolence knew no bounds, and he reveled in the suffering of his subjects. The villagers trembled under his iron-fisted rule, their lives drained by his insatiable hunger for power.

But it was not merely earthly dominion that Abhartach sought. He wielded forbidden magic—the kind that twisted the fabric of reality. His very existence defied the natural order. When the moon waxed full, he would vanish into the ancient woods, chanting incantations that echoed through the hollows. And when he returned, his eyes glowed like embers, and his thirst for blood remained unquenched.

Cathain, a neighboring chieftain, could bear it no longer. His people suffered, their souls crushed by Abhartach’s maleficence. Cathain, fueled by courage and desperation, rallied his warriors. They marched toward Abhartach’s fortress, swords gleaming with resolve.

The battle unfolded—a clash of steel and ancient curses. Cathain fought with valor, each swing of his blade fueled by the collective anguish of the oppressed. Abhartach, however, was no ordinary foe. His wounds healed swiftly, and his laughter echoed across the blood-soaked moors.

Three times Cathain struck him down, and three times Abhartach rose again. The villagers watched in horror as the dwarf king emerged from his grave, his eyes aflame with hatred. The very earth seemed to recoil from his touch.

Desperate, Cathain sought the counsel of a wise druid. The old seer revealed the truth: Abhartach was one of the neamh-mairbh, the walking dead. To defeat him, Cathain needed more than mortal weapons. He required a yew-wood sword—anointed with moonlight—a burial upside down, thorny barriers encircling the grave, and a massive stone to seal it shut.

And so, Cathain faced Abhartach once more. With each blow, he drove the yew-wood blade into the dwarf’s heart. The earth drank Abhartach’s malevolence, and the villagers wept with relief. They buried him head down, thorns piercing the soil, and placed the colossal stone atop the grave.

Abhartach’s reign of terror ceased, but his legend endured. The laght—a sepulchral monument—still stands in the parish of Errigal, a grim reminder. Beware, for Abhartach’s thirst for blood may yet stir in the shadows, waiting for the next moonrise to break free.

And so, the tale of Abhartach echoes through the misty hills, a cautionary whisper to those who dare disturb the slumber of the undead.

Irish Celtic mythology

VOL 2

The Banshee: A Haunting Specter

The banshee, known as “Bean Sídhe” in Irish folklore, is a mysterious and eerie figure deeply entrenched in Celtic mythology. She is a harbinger of death, a spectral messenger who appears to forewarn of impending doom. Let us delve into the haunting details of this ethereal being:

Appearance:

The banshee is often depicted as a veiled woman with long, disheveled hair that cascades down her back.

Her attire is ancient and tattered, reflecting her timeless existence. A flowing gown, sometimes white or gray, clings to her spectral form.

Her eyes are piercing and sorrowful, reflecting the weight of her otherworldly burden.

Cries of Mourning:

The banshee is most renowned for her keening wails. When a prominent family member is about to die, she materializes near their dwelling or by a riverbank.

Her mournful cries pierce the night, echoing through the valleys and hills. These eerie sounds are said to be an omen of impending death.

The banshee’s lament is both a warning and a lamentation—a farewell to the living and a beckoning to the afterlife.

Ancestral Guardianship:

The banshee is deeply connected to specific Irish families, especially those of noble lineage. Each family has its own unique banshee.

She is a guardian spirit who watches over her chosen clan. Her appearance signifies the imminent passing of a beloved family member.

The Three Forms:

The banshee can manifest in three distinct forms:

As a beautiful young woman, singing sweetly by the water’s edge.

As a matronly figure, veiled and weeping, her grief palpable.

As a haggard crone, her features twisted with sorrow and age.

The Morrigan Connection:

Some legends link the banshee to the ancient goddess Morrigan, a deity associated with war, fate, and sovereignty.

The Morrigan, like the banshee, embodies both life and death, weaving the threads of destiny.

Crossing the Veil:

The banshee straddles the boundary between the mortal realm and the Otherworld. Her presence is a reminder of our mortality.

She beckons souls toward the next realm, guiding them through the veil.

Respect and Reverence:

Despite her eerie reputation, the banshee is treated with respect and reverence. Her role is not malevolent; she merely fulfills her duty.

Families honor her by acknowledging her presence and accepting her message.

In the moonlit glens and mist-shrouded hills of Ireland, the banshee continues her timeless vigil. Her cries echo through the ages, a haunting melody that binds the living and the departed.
