any songs that remind you of stancest?
other than that taking what’s not yours by tvgirl is Very post-portal stancest coded
the implications of ford pulling this photo out of his trenchcoat in the last episode you guys… THE IMPLICATIONS.
look at the state of this thing!! look at its rips! the stain in the bottom right corner! it’s dog-eared, the color is faded, the paper has browned… he’s kept this photo of them since they were kids. through all the years he stubbornly swore to hold a grudge, all the years he and stan never spoke, he kept this photo.
and we can assume he probably didn’t have it dimension-hopping, since i find it hard to believe he would’ve had it on him when he initially got sucked in, but ford pulling it out of his trenchcoat here!! implies!! that he had been CARRYING IT AROUND WITH HIM for some time after he got back!
imagine if he found it in some of his old stuff the night he returned, after punching and yelling at stan, after being sure to keep as much emotional distance between them as possible, and he finds this photo. would he have stared down at it? for a little while? smoothed the creases out on his desk? thumbed the torn, loved edges while he mourned a simpler time? then pocketed the thing to always have it with him?
i dunno. maybe i’m looking too far into it. but i can’t help but wonder if ford kept it because, against all his big dreams and ambitions, deep down he always wondered what his life might have been like if he sailed away with his brother when they were teenagers. never able to throw it away because doing so would symbolically destroy the last remnants of a childhood fantasy, the last piece of him that remains young and hopeful of a future at his brother’s side.
fiddlestan does genuinely at times just feels like stancest but for cowards
like i think it can be fun but guys…
they chillin like old times
Ughhh I love him
that's not to say that there aren't similarities. obviously, the twins have dynamics that can be compared to each other in a myriad of ways, both separately and together.
but it's so very vital that dipper is NOT a 1:1 ford. and mabel is NOT a 1:1 stan.
dipper has ford's love of rationality and mysteries, but he has stan's love of stories and family. mabel has stan's pure chaos, but ford's pre-bill trust in people.
dipper and stan both approach the world with cynicism. young ford and mabel approach the world with wonder.
stan was the twin worried about being left behind, just like mabel. ford and dipper both wanted to carve a path for themselves and their future.
mabel was so scared of losing her brother that she accidentally caused weirdmaggedon, just like stan was worried about losing ford that he accidentally sabatoged ford's science project/collegiate future. but dipper was the one who fought like hell mostly by himself in the apocalypse for three days to get her back, just like stan worked for thirty years to save ford. there is nothing dipper wouldn't sacrifice for mabel.
in my humble opinion, this is why the pines family dynamic is so damn compelling. they aren't carbon copies because that's not how people work. there is a sincerity, an honesty, a relatability between all of these characters and their flaws.
mabel and dipper aren't just the younger version of their grunkles. they are a crazy mishmash of the best and worst traits swapped around and punted to the moon and back.
exploring each micro-dynamic is so fascinating. i love this weird little family.

I think one of the things that bugs me about the way shipping and fandom happens surrounding Ford and Stan is that a lot of times, since the artist or writer is focused on their ship, they more often than not cut out any inclusion of one brother or the other (usually Stanley since this site loves its Fid and Ford and Bill and Ford) And to me, cutting off either brother means you don't have a good grip on their characters. There's so much evidence from word-of-mouth Alex to all the myriads of details in the show and books to show that Stan was always, always, and will always think about Ford, have him in his heart like a promise or in his side like a thorn. And Ford? Holy shit Ford has complex feelings around Stan, but there's so much evidence to show that he never stopped thinking about him. Wrote a secret message saying he missed him in the back wall of the dorm he shared with Fiddle in him and his brother's secret code language... Took pictures of Stan WITH HIM into Gravity Falls and then had one on his person when he went through the portal. Even when he was angry at Stan, he still thought there was something there, even when he was a guy who was too focused on being a hero to see past his ego, he still thought of Stan. He still needed him in his own ways. Pretending like either of them don't keep the other on the mind, erasing the fact that they were both an integral and always present part of each other's lives in one way or another, or SEPERATING THEM so you can ship them and ignoring that Ford basically said he would dedicate the rest of his life to his brother at the end of Journal three isn't just misunderstanding their characters, it's just blatantly not getting the point. I don't know who these "Ford"s and "Stan"s are that you all have been playing with but I watch Gravity Falls, sorry.
