Trailblazing & Stargazing - chapter 15

Hermione was thoroughly exhausted after a very long work day and hoped to be able to go home soon, but the education reform was too important, she had to see this through.

When she stepped out of the floo at Malfoy House, still wearing her work outfit, she was surprised to see Malfoy waiting for her and not Carson.

“Hello, Granger.” He said with his trademark smirk. “Are you done saving the Wizarding World for today?”

He was wearing a black suit with a crisp white Oxford shirt and a dark green tie. Hermione felt extremely self-conscious, she had come here straight from the Ministry and looked a mess.

“Honestly, Malfoy. I’m haggard, I could do without further bullying from you. I read your memo, I visited Eniiyi’s memory of the hearing, I really don’t need to be here unless you’re going to be civil.” She chided, taking her discomfort out on him.

“Calm down, Granger. I was just joking, not bullying.” He replied, raising his hands in surrender.

“Do. Not. Tell. Me. To. Calm. Down. Ever.” She growled.

“Fine, fine. I’m sorry. Let’s get some food into you, before you bite my head off.” He took her arm and lead her towards the dining room. "You look llovely, by the way. Green looks good on you"

She huffed but went along with him. Mostly because she was hungry and her fridge was empty, and she did like this outfit very much and she was glad someone had noticed it, even though she was aware that she looked anything but lovely and he was just being nice.

“Daph! You’re back!” Screeched Ginny as she sat down at their table at the Green Viper. “Tell us everything!”

“Well, my work there was done. Fredrik was absolutely wonderful, I honestly thought of staying, but I don’t think he was The One. I considered a few things and I decided to come back. My life is here. I missed my troublesome friends! And I see we have a new member!”

“We missed you too!” replied the others.

Luna introduced Willow, who had since become a well integrated member of the group. Daphne listened to her in awe as she told a few of her adventures on the hellmouth.

“I dated a werewolf, before I became a witch. My best friend dated two vampires. Not at the same time, obviously.” She told her very attentive audience.

“We had a werewolf teacher, he was the best.” Said Hermione. “But vampires? Aren’t they soulless beings?”

“Angel, the first one, was all handsome and broody and had been cursed with a soul because he was a real baddie. He was a puppy with Buffy though, still broody but with googly eyes. That is until he lost his soul because they had sex.” She shrugged “With Spike, we called him captain peroxide because of his bleached platinum hair, it was a perfect enemies to lovers story. They hated each other, then, when Buffy came back from the dead, they began fucking like rabbits and he went out and got himself a soul just to be worthy of her.” She sighed. “Oh, and my other best friend dated a one-thousand-year-old vengeance demon who had come to Sunnydale to kill him.”

“And I though Hogwarts was a dangerous place.” Said Daphne in shock. The others chuckled.

After talking to Hermione and seemingly getting her to talk to him again, Draco returned to his rooms. They were not very different from Hermione’s but his sofa was black leather and the rest of his furniture was black too. He didn’t even like black, but this had been Snape’s flat and he didn’t want to change it. His Godfather was never an affectionate man but he had always been kind to Draco and he missed him.

He had not understood a word of what Hermione had said, but he was pretty sure that that fucking book was at least part of the reason she had been avoiding him. Muggles were probably writing stories depicting him even worse than he felt about himself. He took out his pensieve and revisited the memory.

Not that using his pensieve with memories of his evenings with Hermione was new. He did that almost every day, trying to figure out what he did right or wrong depending on her reactions. He had been fancying her since that very first day when they had found out about the whole Harry Potter books fiasco. He told himself he shouldn’t fancy her, because she could be nice and friendly to him, but surely, she could never forget how he’d treated her, how she had been tortured in his own drawing room as he looked helplessly at her. But sometimes he felt like, maybe, she wanted him too. The mixed signals drove him crazy. He had tried, really really hard, to avoid wanking to thoughts of her, but that battle had been lost long ago. Her lips, her hands, he legs, all of her, now haunted his dreams.

After the fourth time he had revisited the memory he thought he had everything down. He had to find this internet, wherever it may be, and look for this AO3… webshite? No, websight. Yes, definitely websight. Or wherever the fan fiction was kept. It all sounded like gibberish to him. Oh, and Dramione, that weird word on the cover of that blasted book. That seemed important too. He needed help from someone who would know about such things. A muggle born, he would ask a muggle born student. Who could he trust?

Mr Stewart spoke “Lyn, did you sign June up for some fancy school?”

“No, I did not.” She paused and took in the sight of Hermione and Draco, standing in the middle of her living room, wearing clothes that would have been perfect in a museum exhibition.

Hermione was seriously reconsidering her choice of clothing,. “Hello Ms Stewart, June. I’m Professor Hermione Granger, this is Professor Draco Malfoy and we teach at…” June cut in excitedly “Hogwarts! You teach at Hogwarts! But, wait, aren’t you supposed to work at the Ministry of Magic and become the youngest Minister ever? It said so in the epilogue! And why is HE with you? Didn’t he bully you? You’re friends now? How is Harry doing, by the way?” The girl looked expectantly at Hermione, who was totally speechless. Ms Stewart tried to talk to her daughter. “June dear, Hogwarts doesn’t exist, these people are actors, they are probably here to advertise something. I’m sorry, but we’re not interested in buying anything.” Ms Stewart was ushering them towards the door when Hermione pulled herself together.

“I’m sorry, you took me by surprise there, but I really need to talk to you. Your daughter has, indeed, been selected for Hogwarts school of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Which you should know nothing about, by the way. May I ask where you got all this information?” June took Hermione’s hand and led her to the sofa, leaving her mother and Draco behind. Mr Stewart was still staring from the kitchen door. Eventually the other adults recovered enough to go sit in the living room.

He had always been beautiful. Even when his features had been pointy and his face distorted in an angry sneer, she had always known he was objectively beautiful. His hair was so distinctive of him, she could spot him anywhere, in a crowd, from a distance, as he zoomed in the sky on that bloody broom all her friends seemed to love. She always knew where he was. Sometimes, in class, she would find herself staring into the back of his neck, where the silvery white of his hair met the pearly white of his skin, as if hypnotized. Nobody ever noticed, luckily, but she blushed anyway when she snapped back to reality, barely in time to prevent her fingers from brushing against his skin. His eyes, though she didn’t have many chances to look into them, if not when they were spitting venom at each other, she knew their unique shade of grey was another tassel added to the overall beauty of his face. She appreciated the beauty of the box, even though it seemed to contain only hatred and spite. Somehow, though, he had always been sure that, digging deeper, beauty and kindness could be found within him, too. She felt it in her bones.

When everyone had laughed at the poem the gnome had sang to her best friend in second year, she had blushed furiously, knowing she had been this close to doing something similar. To this day, she still remembered the silly poem she had written and immediately incendioed. Writing poetry was not one of her talents.

He smirks and he sneers,

He hangs with the worst peers.

But his hair shines like goblin wrought silver,

When he looks at me, I feel my heart quiver.

On Saturday morning, Hugo had a guitar lesson and Rose met with some friends from her primary school. Hermione stayed at home and read a book, trying not to think about the upcoming conversation with Ron.

In the afternoon, the three of them went to Central London for some shopping in the muggle shops, went to the cinema to watch ‘The Croods: A New Era’, which had them laughing the entire time, and stopped for dinner at a small kebab restaurant not far from their home. Hermione enjoyed spending time with her children, they were growing up to be beautiful humans. Once home, after Hugo had gone to his room to play his guitar again, Hermione asked Rose to stay with her for a moment.

“I know it’s none of my business.” She began, clearing her throat as it felt constricted. “And I won’t ask you questions. But I want to make sure you’re fine and you’re being careful, with Scorpius. In case you’re having, or planning to have, sex.” Hermione looked into her daughter’s eyes, trying to see something, anything, in them.

“Mum! Do we really have to talk about this? It’s embarrassing!” Rose visibly cringed. “Can’t I talk about this with Auntie Ginny? Or Auntie Fleur, maybe?”

“Rose, I’m not here to ask details. You have your friends for gossiping and swooning over boys. And I’m sure Auntie Ginny and Auntie Fleur will be more than happy to help if you have more… practical questions. I understand that talking about such things with your mother may be uncomfortable. Even though I do hope you know that, if you want to, you can talk to me, about anything. I’ll never judge you, I want to be sure you know that.” She paused, waiting for a sign from Rose. When she nodded, mildly exasperated, Hermione continued. “I’m here to make sure that whatever you chose to do, or not do, you are prepared. Do you know how to cast a contraceptive charm?”

Rose shook her head. Hermione demonstrated the wand movement and recited the incantation and then asked Rose to do it. She managed it on her fourth attempt. Hermione made her try again a few more times, just to be sure.

“Good. Now, we should talk about consent.” She said when she was happy with the results.

“Mum, we’ve already talked about consent. A million times.” Rose whined.

There is also an AO3 collection. Feel free to post on all four platforms if you so choose!

If you post for a prompt that hasn’t come up yet, (for example, posting day 20’s prompt when it’s September 14th) we won’t share the post until the indicated day comes up. We will reblog/retweet for previous days’ prompts if you post past the indicated day!

- All works posted to the collection will be hidden and anonymous until the relevant day/prompt occurs, i.e. if you post a work for the Day 20 prompt, it will remain hidden and anonymous until September 20th. Works posted for a previous date’s prompt will not be hidden.

- Works with sensitive and explicit content, including dead doves, are allowed. Please use AO3’s tagging system for all relevant warnings and potentially triggering content. Works with ‘Author Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings’ will not be allowed.

If this is the case, please claim one of the final Free Day (either Day 29 or Day 30) prompts. The only drawback we can see from this is that AO3 now limits how many tags a work can have, thus you may not be able to tag everything relevant for your single work. Another possible downside is that some readers may be turned off by a long wall of tags, with no easy way to know which chapter which tags apply to.

We recommend posting each prompt claim as a single work, and placing each of your works in a series (separate from our Collection) so readers can navigate easily through your prompt fills by clicking 'Next Work' at the bottom of each work.

-When your work is revealed, please remember to change the posting date to the current date!!

- Again, posting to AO3 is optional.
