Authors Note: And here we see that I have no concept of keeping things nice and easy for a longer than a chapter. Also again, I will say that if you want to be a part of the tag list, either MESSAGE or SEND AN ASK. It’s too hard sometimes to keep up with the notes on things so if you want to secure a spot, do one of those two otherwise you will not be added.
You knew the moment you got home from work that it was going to be a long….well however long you were stuck with this guy.
Both you and Bucky got up to your apartment and he was quick to lock the door and check outside.
“You can’t spend your mornings on the fire escape anymore,” Bucky spoke as he closed the window and switched the latched to close.
You, already irritated from the whole situation while being tired from work, rolled your eyes and peeled off your boots. “And why is that?”
“Because they sent photos of you sitting out there. Easy shot if they wanted to take one,” Bucky said, crossing his arms as he looked over at you.
“Like I care if I’m shot at. Maybe a dead daughter will teach my dad that his work isn’t the best. You know what?” You turned to him as you threw your hands in the air. “You’re only here because my dad says you have to be. Now I just worked a long ass shift and all I want is a hot bubble bath, my bed, and some fucking wine. Not some guard dog telling me what I can and can’t do. My mornings with Miss Liz are not going to be interrupted because you say so. Now I suggest you listen or else this is going to be a lot harder for you,” you explained, clearly exhausted.
But the look in Bucky’s eye made you want to cower. He let out a deep breath through his nose, looking as though he was trying to restrain himself. “I’m not a guard dog,” he glared.
Then again, you were too tired to care about being scared. “Whatever. I call it how I see it. Now I’m going to go do my thing. Watch tv or go to sleep or whatever it is you do,” you shrugged, leaving him standing in your living room as you went into the bathroom and shut the door.
You stayed in the bath a bit longer than usual, your phone softly playing music as your mind raced with the future and the past.
“But why do we have to leave? I was supposed to go to Marcie’s later for a sleepover!” You whined as your mom packed up a suitcase for you. You were only nine at the time, completely unaware of what your father did for a living. You thought he was just some business man. He was, but in more darker trades.
“I know, pumpkin, but what if I promise that Marcie can come over and stay a whole weekend when we get back? We’ll be at the lake house for a week, that’s all. You know, it’s firefly season. Go get your mason jar and net and we’ll see how many we can catch,” your mother, Charlotte, said. It made her heart ache to see you so disappointed. She had hoped that your life would be somewhat normal but unfortunately being around the mafia would leave your life anything but normal. She tried to make sure you got to do kid things.
Charlotte did, but your father was nowhere to be found. He was always working, always trying to fight some silent war going on. It wasn’t until your early teens that you found out what your father did for a living. You blamed him for everything wrong in your life. How you couldn’t keep friends because he was constantly pulling you away or forcing you into hiding out in the house, how you didn’t get to go to prom or homecoming because you would be an “easy target”.
Somehow you even blamed him for your mother’s death, despite it being cancer. You just felt the need to blame him for every bad thing because it always led back to him. That instance, you could agree that you were being irrational. But the one person who always gave a damn about you was now gone.
A few tears fell from your eyes as you tried to picture her in the good ways. Planting flowers in the backyard of your childhood home, teaching you how to bake cookies from scratch, even helping you sew your first dress that you made by hand. Her smile could light up a room and even with your father’s idiotic ways, she still found the good in him. The good you had yet to see. Sure, he was trying to protect you, but you knew it was for his own benefit, not yours. Frankly you weren’t afraid to die. You realized that as a teen. If you were shot in the middle of some mafia war, then so be it. Maybe then your father would see that his work was more harmful than good.
Wiping your face off with your already damp hand, you sighed. Now you had a bodyguard staying with you, one who seemed like he was at your fathers beck and call. Were you supposed to feed him and keep him entertained? He said he wasn’t a guard dog but right now it felt like you had a damn Cane Corso staying in your apartment. The look he gave you earlier was nothing short of a warning but you weren’t scared.
Also you noticed he had gloves on. It’s the summer, why would a guy wear gloves? Was it so his fingerprint wasn’t pushed around everywhere? But you’ve seen other men work for your father and watch over both you and your mother and they never once wore gloves unless it was winter. It didn’t make sense.
After an hour in the tub and at least one refill of hot water, you got out and wrapped a towel around your body. Collecting your clothes, you left the bathroom and turned towards your room. On the way by the guest room, you heard soft murmurs.
“Yeah…this isn’t gonna be easy, she’s already on my last nerve…I know, sir. I promise she’ll be safe…didn’t see anything today….” Of course he was updating your dad.
Rolling your eyes, you walked into your room and closed the door before locking it. After you dried off, you pulled on a large tee and some pajama shorts. Your stomach growled, realizing that you hadn’t eaten at all since this morning. Glancing at the clock, it was nearly six am. You could wait a while longer, you just didn’t want to see Bucky again. Thankfully a bag of chips and the bottle of wine was still sitting on your nightstand from the night before. It may be warm, but you couldn’t care less.
You dozed off at some point, the bag of chips left on one side of the bed as you curled around a pillow on the other side. You had the day off and you slept in until damn near three pm.
Waking up was easy enough, ready to see if Miss Liz left you cookies. She always knew the days off meant you wouldn’t be out in the mornings. Well, morning for you. So she always left goodies. But then you saw the empty bottle of wine and remembered why you were drinking in the first place.
Sighing, you knew you needed coffee, which meant leaving your room. How were you going to be able to coexist with this guy? His face was the last thing you wanted to see right now. But, nothing was going to stand in your way of your coffee.
Sliding out of bed and running your hands through your messy hair, you slowly walked out. The television was on, a rerun of Criminal Minds playing. You glanced over and saw Bucky on the couch, turning his head to gaze at you.
“Sleep okay?” He asked, though you just ignored him and walked into the kitchen.
Bucky furrowed his brow. He was trying to play nice but you weren’t making it easy.
Apparently Bucky already had coffee, considering there was a hot half a pot left. Grumbling to yourself, you poured some into your mug and walked over to the window. Pushing it open while silently daring Bucky to tell you off, you slipped outside and took a seat on the little pillow you kept out there. Glancing to your right, you saw the little Tupperware and a note.
Hey babe, these are just regular cookies today, kinda smoked all the weed instead. Hope you have a good day! -L
Man, you loved this lady. Popping the top open, you took a cookie and dipped it in your coffee before eating it. Soft chocolate chip with a hint of butterscotch. You are about two more before looking down at them. Four remained, making you sigh. You really had to make this living situation at least a tad lighter.
Taking the plastic bowl, you reached out through the open window without looking back. Rustling the bowl to get Bucky’s attention, you heard the tv mute and boots for the ground.
“What are these?” Bucky asked as he leaned into the open window. Setting the bowl down in front of him, you took another sip of your coffee as you stared out towards the park.
“Cookies, do they not have them where you’re from?” You asked, raising your eyebrow as you looked over at him.
“Yeah but what’s in them?” He asked, of course he has to be the cautious one.
“Stuff you make cookies with. They’re not drugged this time,” you shrugged, leaning back against the brick wall.
“This time?” Bucky widened his eyes. You reached over and grabbed the note, setting it in front of him. He read it over and rolled his eyes. “Pot cookies? Jesus. Get inside, someone could be watching you.”
You glared at him as you stayed in your seat. “Yes, pot cookies. And no, I’m gonna stay out here a little longer.”
Bucky grumbled incoherently and pulled away from the window. Setting the cookies on the counter, he walked over to his coat and pulled out his gun. Sliding it behind him in the waistband of his pants, he returned to the window and climbed out.
“What the hell?” You asked, scooting over to avoid being crushed by his big ass.
“You won’t come inside so I have to come outside,” Bucky said, taking a seat next to you.
You glared at him, knowing he was doing his job but you were entirely annoyed. “Why are you doing this? Why did he pick you and why did you agree?” You asked after a moment of silence while he got situated.
Bucky sighed and crossed his arms, leaning back against the brick. “He chose me because Charlotte hand picked me.”
You lost your breath for a moment, not expecting to hear your mothers name from him. What did he mean that she hand picked him?
Bucky saw your confusion and continued. “I was new to the mafia business. My friend Steve had worked with your dad for a few years and they brought me in. I had just been brought home to Brooklyn after an incident overseas when I was in the army. I was discharged and after a while, I was able to get back on my feet. I started out as just a guard, making sure no one came into your fathers building without us knowing who they were. Charlotte took a liking to me after I helped her a few times with bringing things in and out. We talked for a while and I’m not sure why, but she wanted to make sure I made it in this business. She talked to your dad and he agreed to give me a chance at being more than just a guard. You were a…junior, at the time I think. Your mom loved talking about you, telling me how well your art was doing, how you didn’t want to be a part of this life. She worried about you. And then when she found out she had cancer-“
“Stop.”
Bucky’s words were left hanging in the air as you raised your finger. You couldn’t listen any more, not while you were struggling to not cry. You already did enough of that the night before and you still had a headache from it.
“Just…don’t,” you said, your voice softer than before.
The two of you stayed quiet as you sipped on your coffee, your emotions calming down as the moments passed.
After about ten minutes, you got up and stepped over Bucky before slipping inside. The coffee was gone and your heart ached. Leaving the mug in the sink, you sighed when you heard Bucky step in and the window close.
“Listen, we just…gotta make this work, okay? So you can go back to doing whatever it is you do and I can go back to not being a mafia daughter,” you said as you turned, leaning against the counter.
It caught Bucky off guard but he looked over and nodded. Now that you knew he was doing this because he felt like he had to help since he owed your mom where he was today, you knew she would be disappointed in how you were treating him.
“So I’m assuming my dad gave you money for food and stuff while you’re here?” You asked, to which he nodded. Since Bucky was going to be watching you, your dad gave him a very, very good raise. “Well, I need to go shopping today. I guess you’re coming with. But please, lose the suit jacket. It’s gonna look pretty suspicious when I’m dressed in a tank too and leggings while you look like you’re ready for an important business meeting. Plus, aren’t you hot with those gloves?” You asked, motioning your head towards his hands.
Bucky frowned softly, rubbing the back of his neck with a shake of his head. “Gloves stay, but I can change.”
You raised an eyebrow but shrugged. Walking to your room, you closed the door behind you and decided to keep it simple. Just as you said, a black pair of leggings paired with a dark red tank. Oh how you missed the fall. You threw your hair up in a bun and grabbed your purse, slinging it over your shoulder. Bucky was done before you and you saw how he changed into a pair of jeans and a blue long sleeved Henley. Why did he want to wear long sleeves so bad?
Without questioning him, you grabbed your keys and the two of you headed out.
Shopping was…simple enough. From the things Bucky chose, it was clear he was probably into cooking. By the way your side of the cart looked, it showed that you didn’t cook much at all. At least you had all of the pans and such for him to use. They were all still pretty brand new.
You felt Bucky move closer to your side as you two walked, though you tried to move away. His arm slipped around your waist and that’s when you stopped completely. “What are you-“
His hand gripped your waist, as if to stop you from speaking. “I think we’re being followed. Just walk normally and don’t say anything,” he whispered, slowly taking steps forward and pushing you along with him. You went to look around but he cleared his throat a little before shaking his head. “Don’t.”
You walked alongside him, trying to act normal as if you were just grocery shopping with a boyfriend. Granted, that had never been a thing you’ve actually done. “Is there anything else you need?” You asked, though it had seemed like you two were pretty much done.
Bucky shook his head and the two of you walked to the front near the registers. He put everything on the conveyor belt, including yours to which you were going to stop him but the moment you made a sound, he narrowed his eyes. You chewed the inside of your cheek as he paid for it all, knowing you would pay him back. After everything was bagged, the two of you walked out while his arm moved around your waist again. Sure enough, he spotted the same people he saw before. The two of you put the bags in the car and although you never wanted to be that person, he suggested you leave the cart in the middle of the parking space beside you and drove off.
“Don’t go home,” he said as he pulled the gun out from the back of his pants.
“Why not?” You asked, taking a left turn instead of a right like you normally would have.
“Do you want to lead them to your house?” Bucky looked at you as if you were that dumb.
“They already know where I live. Where should I go?” You sighed.
“Anywhere but home. Just drive around. Go to Jersey for all I care,” he shrugged, turning in his seat and looking out the back window.
You decided to do just that, head towards Jersey. But about twenty miles down the road, a car appeared and Bucky saw that it was the same men from the store. They were coming up quickly and without care, the passenger leaned out and shot at your car. A scream left your lips as the bullet went straight through the windows, swerving slightly.
“Fuck!” You yelled, pushing harder on the gas. Bucky slid into the back seat and proceeded to kick the entirety of your back window out. From there, he had a perfect shot at the men. It was a fire fight back and forth, while you stayed ducked down as much as possible while still being able to see the road. Your poor car was going to be fucked after this.
Bucky got a few good shots in, even managing to knock the gun out of the man's hand and into the oncoming traffic. He could see that he got the man somewhere from the line of blood down the side of the car. The two men decided to retreat and took a side road, heading back to their own base.
You drove for a while before pulling into a parking garage, hiding at a far end. You were somewhere in Manhattan, though you had no clue where. Once you shut the car off, you slowly began to rise up from your crouched position. Bucky shifted and leaned in between the seats, looking you over.
“Were you hit?” He asked, though he didn’t notice any blood. You shook your head, even as your hands shook. You may have had close calls in life with the mafia business, but this took the cake.
The way you looked at Bucky showed your fear. You may not be afraid to die, but then again, you never came that close. In some way, you were hoping that when you did die, it would be quick and painless. Not a car chase with the possibility of being hit.
“My car…” you muttered, your mind buzzing.
“Will be fixed. Are you okay?” He asked, taking your chin with his gloved hand and making you look at him. You hesitated for a moment, though you nodded.
“Get over. I’m driving,” he spoke, letting go of your chin.
This time, you let him.

Loki’s Masterlist
Warnings: angst, fluff, Loki's pissy girlfriend WC: 3.3k (another fic where I got carried away)
You were practically skipping as you entered the communal floor first thing on a Monday morning, it was so quiet when everyone left for the weekend and there was one person in particular you missed most of all. You came to a sudden stop as you rounded the corner and found Loki leaning against the countertop, wearing only a grey pair of sweatpants that were low on his hips. His eyebrows pinched together as the smile on your face fell and he stood up straight to his full height at the sight.
“Everything alright, love?” He asked.
“Oh, yeah, yeah,” You stammered, planting a fresh smile on your face at his concern, “I just forgot I have archery this morning.”
He didn’t look convinced but then again it was almost pointless trying to lie to the god of lies himself. He was missing the lack of your usual bubbly nature in an instant and placed his mug of black coffee back on the bench. You could barely keep eye contact with him but you usually had no problem seeing him shirtless, in fact he regularly walked around in just his boxers, unabashedly.
“You’re not going to introduce us?” You asked quietly as you drew his attention to the woman he had under his arm.
His lips parted with a silent ‘oh’, as if he had forgotten her presence completely. “This is Charlotte. Charlotte, meet my dearest friend, y/n.”
“It’s nice to meet you.” You smiled despite the glare she was giving you. “Are you joining us for breakfast? I’m making Kiki’s favourite.”
“Kiki?” She cocked her eyebrow in distaste. “I can’t stay, have important places to be. See you tonight baby.”
You had tried other variations of his name but they didn’t seem to fit him until you settled on Kiki, and she didn’t have to like it, only you were allowed to call him that. She walked off without even glancing back as you said goodbye and you turned to Loki with a look of concern.
“Are you feeling alright?” You asked, touching a hand to his cool forehead before he brushed it away with a laugh.
“Perfectly fine, love.”
“I probably wouldn’t call me that anymore, I don’t think your girlfriend appreciated that very much.”
His brows furrowed together as he sipped his coffee. “But I have always called you love.”
“And you have always been single, but things change - it just doesn’t feel appropriate anymore.” As much as it hurt you, you hid it with a smile. You would miss the endearment he had used so much you answered to it more than your actual name.
“I don’t want things to change.”
You were already walking out of the breakfast nook and into the more commercial kitchen Tony had installed and began to gather the ingredients for waffles. As soon as the scent began to waft down the hall the doors began to open and the avengers filed out. They were never as excited about Mondays like you were but they did look forward to your cooking, stopping to kiss your forehead or give you a hug as they filled their plates.
“So Loki has some news to share.” You said as you sat down beside him and his hand slipped under the table to grip your knee with a side glance. “What? They live here too, they will figure it out.”
“That you two are in love with each other?” Nat chuckled as she drenched her waffle in maple syrup. “Yeah, we know.”
Your neck was heating up and you brushed Loki’s hand away before anyone saw it before shaking your head. “I don’t know, uh, what you’re on about. Loki has a girlfriend.”
Nat’s waffle dropped from her fork and she barely caught it before it landed on her clothes, her eyes darting between the two of you. She looked over at the others, seeing equally shocked faces before turning back to the two of you. You couldn’t understand why everyone was so shocked. Loki was devilishly handsome, funny and charming when he wanted to be, it was a miracle he stayed single for as long as he did.
“Who is she?” Nat asked, her head tipping to the side as she flipped to interrogation mode.
“A model I believe.” He answered after clearing his throat. “I’ll be honest, there is not a lot of talking when we are in each other's company if you catch my drift.”
Your head dropped at the thought of Loki being in another's company, he was your best friend and it was selfish but you weren’t ready to share him with anyone else. An elbow gently nudged you and you looked up to see everyone staring at you absentmindedly pushing your food around your plate. Shaking the thoughts away you turned your attention back to the conversation and Sam who was watching you closely. “Sorry, what was the question?”
“I asked if you are okay.” He repeated.
Your head nodded but it was all over the place, a nod, a shake, something in between. “Sorry, I was just daydreaming about…something.”
You cursed that you couldn’t think of an excuse before taking your still full plate and scraping the waste into the compost, losing your appetite as you gained their attention. With a quiet goodbye you went back to your room and showered with the hopes the water would wash away the ache growing in your chest. Unfortunately it failed and the pain only increased when you opened the bathroom door and found Loki sitting on your bed, reading one of the books from your shelf.
“Loki, you can’t just come in here anymore, what would your girlfriend think if she knew about this.”
“You didn’t call me Kiki.” He sighed, his sad eyes looking up from the pages. “Why are you pushing me away? Did I do something to offend you, love?”
You growled softly in the back of your throat and wrapped the towel tighter to ensure it didn’t fall off as you sat down on the edge of the bed.
“I’m not pushing you away Kiki.” You reassured him. “But, if I were in her shoes, I know I would hate to find you in these situations. I would be jealous.”
“But you’re my best friend, it’s not like there’s anything going on between us.”
You swallowed the lump in your throat and nodded your head. “And you’re my best friend but to her you are a man comfortable in going into a woman’s room while she is practically naked. You have to see how that could be received, right?”
His eyes widened almost as if he only just realised you were practically naked, the towel just covering your breasts and falling to mid thigh. The green irises disappeared into his pupils before he rose from the bed and almost bowed with an apology before leaving the room. This was not a good way to start your week.
You would like to say the month had improved but four weeks later on a Friday afternoon you were glad most of the compound’s residents were heading to their personal homes for the weekend. Your fingers had cuts all over them from the archery lessons Clint had put you through and you were happy to wave him off as he went home to his family. Walking back inside, you tried to avoid the common room since you could hear Charlotte’s voice and after the multiple run-ins with her each morning your seemingly perpetual good nature was finally reaching the end of its tether.
“There you are, love.” Loki called out as he spotted you sneaking down the hall, his long legs quickly catching up to you. “We were just about to go to the movies, would you like to come?”
You looked beyond him to the pair of narrow eyes glaring at you and you shook your head, wishing he would stop calling you that. “It’s been a long week, I’m just going to go to bed.”
His head dropped in defeat and he missed the time he no longer got to spend with you. “What happened to your hands?”
Before you could stop him, he caught you by the wrists and gently unclenched your fists to see the cuts from the bow string and fletchings. His cool hand was soothing against the inflamed skin and he tutted under his breath that you were working yourself too hard. You only did it because you needed the distraction now that his attention was elsewhere.
“It’s nothing, Loki, just getting used to the new weapon.” You sighed and tried to pull your hand back. “Please, I just want to go to bed.”
You tried to smile but even to you it felt like a grimace and your bubbly tone was as deflated as your soul but he released you from his grip and let you escape. Every part of him wanted to follow you and cheer you up, he was meant to the brooding one and you the bubbly one. It was strange when the scales were tipped, it was almost as if the earth were off kilter and he needed to fix it.
“How about a raincheck on the movie?” Loki asked Charlotte as his eyes stayed fixated on your closed door down the hall.
“Your cancelling date night because of her. Seriously?” She scoffed.
“She’s my best friend, I just want to check on her.” He said as he noticed Natasha’s door creak open along with a few others.
“And I am your girlfriend!” She hissed before composing herself and offering a sweet smile with her palm running down his chest. “Come on, Lo-Lo. Look, Natalie’s here, she can check on whats-her-name for you.”
Loki looked at Nat, pleading with her to play along and she nodded before walking off towards your door, but he didn’t miss the clear message on her face that she was going to be talking to him later about it.
“You know her name, Charlotte.” Loki growled when your door closed again, Nat disappearing with it.
“Do you?” She shot back. “Because you only seem to call her by your little pet name.”
“Not this again…” Loki rolled his eyes and grabbed his jacket, gesturing for her to follow since he did not want to have yet another argument in the middle of the common room. “Let’s just get out of here.”
“Ugh, she really called him Lo-Lo?” You scrunched your face up as Nat recounted the awkward encounter. “I’m surprised you didn’t drop her, Natalie.”
Nat screwed her nose up, not enjoying the moniker she used when undercover, and threw a piece of popcorn at you. She had ducked out to the kitchen, making sure the coast was clear before making two big bowls and bringing them back to your room for a movie night. You kind of felt guilty that you hadn’t spent so much time with her, she was a lot of fun but it wasn’t the same as the movie nights with Loki.
“I miss him.” You admitted as the rom-com ended and the friends turned to lovers with their happy ever after, but you didn’t realise the similarities.
“You should tell him how you feel.”
“I said I missed him the other day and he promised we would hang out this weekend but then she showed up.”
“You know that’s not what I meant.”
“I have no idea what you are talking about.” You said as you poured her another glass of the wine she had snuck into the room. “The alcohol is obviously affecting you.”
“Oh, no, no.” She laughed. “I am 100%, I won’t say sober but, clear headed. You and Loki are the reason people say opposite attracts. Just remember that.”
Another month passed and you saw less and less of Loki, his absence leaving you to wander through the compound looking for something to keep your mind occupied. You cleaned the already pristine labs and moved Tony’s tools around so they made more sense to everyone else but him, knowing he would put them all back when he returned on Monday. Finally, enough time had passed that it could be considered an early night's sleep as opposed to an afternoon nap, so you started making your way back to the apartment floor.
“No, Loki, I am so sick of this. Y/n this, Y/n that, Jesus, no one cares about her!” Charlotte shouted as you stepped off the elevator and right into the middle of their argument, catching your name on her acidic voice. “It’s time to decide, her or me.”
The silence was heavy and the sound of the elevator door closing could finally be heard, pulling Loki’s attention to where you stood frozen with tears in your eyes. You knew this day was coming, you had tried to be nice and encourage a friendship with her but she had refuted your every attempt. She didn’t want you in her life and now she didn’t want you in Loki’s. The final dagger to the heart was the apologetic look in Loki’s green eyes.
You had seen more than enough and couldn’t stomach looking into his eyes anymore. Your feet carried you from the room, by passing your sanctuary and hitting the emergency exit. You ran down the flight of stairs and broke out the back door, ignoring the alarms that you set off and you stepped onto the helipad with a scream, the months of pain finally released. There was no way you could look at him again, not after seeing the pity he held for you so you hit the panel on the quinjet and walked up the ramp, grateful Nat and Clint had taught you how to fly it.
There was no mistaking the figure that watched the jet take off, you could always spot him no matter how dense the crowd. Flipping the switch to stealth mode, you buckled up and tried to think of somewhere you wanted to go. The only place you wanted to be was somewhere you were no longer welcome, at least you saved him from having to say goodbye.
The nights were long as you settled into the cabin you had hired. There was no internet and no power, you were completely off grid and only went into the village for food and supplies during the single hour of daylight. The crackle of a roaring fire was the only sound inside and the flames from the central hearth sent shadows dancing along the walls. It was everything you had imagined Lapland would be but you were still feeling empty, the childhood dream to visit Santa Claus’ Village falling short without the person you wanted to share it with.
You had taken a seat beside the fire with a large mug of coffee that also had a generous pour of Kahlua to help ease your mind. You had never felt as alone as you did in the middle of the Finnish winter, thousands of miles from your friends and family, but you figured now was the best time to learn how to enjoy your own company. By the time the mug was empty your belly was warm with more than just the coffee and you forwent the hot beverage on the next refill.
You had just topped up your mug and carried the entire bottle of coffee liqueur with you to the couch when there was a knock at the door. The owner had said no one ventured as far as the cabin, especially not in winter, so you slipped your Avengers issued gun into your hand and approached with caution.
“Don’t shoot me, love.” Loki called through the door and you pressed your palm to the wood debating whether or not to open it but knowing you couldn’t leave him out in the cold.
Sliding the deadbolt across you opened the door and felt the freezing air chase away the warmth you had accumulated from the fire. Loki practically leapt inside before you shut the door and locked it, kicking the snow off his boots and shaking the flakes from his hair before using his magic to rid the rest.
“What are you doing here?” You asked as you watched the blue hue of his skin return to his normal pale shade. “How did you find me?”
“You’re my best friend. I know more about you than I do myself.” He said as he grabbed a woollen blanket and draped it over your shoulders, feeling guilty for lowering the temperature with his entrance. “I would have been here sooner but someone stole the fastest mode of transport.”
Your lips tipped up before you could catch them and he rewarded you with a bright smile of his own. “Charlotte won’t be happy with you.”
“I imagine that is already true.” He said with a shrug. “I broke up with her.”
“What, why?”
“She gave me an ultimatum to choose.” His palm cupped your cheek and you rested your face in the soft touch, having missed it for so long.
“That was her mistake,” you sighed with a small laugh, “no one tells Loki what to do.”
“You’re wrong, love.” His own dark chuckle washed over you as he pulled you closer. “I made my choice.”
His lips brushed against yours so softly that you were sure you imagined the feel of them. You could barely breathe as his dark hair fell around you and the scent you had missed so much set your body on fire, your hands running through the locks and pulling his face back down to yours. You had almost lost his friendship and now you were the one jeopardising it as you kissed him, but he didn’t pull away. The alcohol must have been clouding your ability to think as it felt like forever before you realised what you were doing.
“I’m sorry.” You whispered as you pulled out of his hold, touching your lips that were swollen with his kiss. “I, I shouldn’t have done that. I just missed you.”
Loki was already reaching out for you, seeing the panic starting to rise as your pulse beat rapidly in your neck. “Shhh, love, I’ve been wanting to do that for a very long time. Since we met, actually.”
You were sure you were drunk now, Loki never showed any signs that he had wanted you, he was just naturally a flirt. “No, you’re just saying that to make me feel better.”
“I’m not, y/n.” His sincerity struck you more than your name falling from his lips. “I should be the one to apologise, for taking so long to see what was clearly in front of me all this time.”
Your head tipped back to keep his eye contact as he stepped closer to you, his body flush with yours. “When you said you made your choice-”
“It’s you. I chose you.” His hands took yours and raised them to his chest, his heart slamming hard against your palms. “It’s always been you. I just hope I haven’t lost my best friend by admitting how much I love her.”
Your vision was blurry as tears welled along your eyes and you shook your head, looking around the cabin in the middle of nowhere yet he found you. “You could never lose me.”
A smile broke his face and he stole another kiss before resting his forehead to yours. “I would go to the ends of the universe, every universe, for you.”

You stared at the screen for what felt like hours but it was mere minutes.
A newspaper article stated that Charlotte and Alexander were high school sweethearts, having known each other since middle school. They wed in the fall and planned on moving out of the state. That didn’t seem to happen. They were in their late twenties when they got married.
So was that a lie, or was your life a lie?
“Maybe it didn’t work out between them? And she met my dad and they stayed friends?” You tried to reason, to find any sensible explanation for what you were finding out.
“C’mon, Y/N. Look at that photo from your birthday. Would exes really be that cuddly together if one was married to someone else? And I’m pretty sure Michael would never allow that. I’ve heard stories over the years of things he’s done. People have died for a lot less than cuddling his wife. By any chance…have you ever done a dna test with your parents?” Bucky dropped the question and you rolled your eyes.
“You’ve got to be kidding me. You’re not seriously suggesting that man is my father. We look nothing alike. Granted I don’t look like Michael either but I’ve always been told I look like my mom. And you expect me to think the man who supposedly killed my mom is related to us? Or to me at least? I’m not believing a word until I talk to my dad,” you shook your head, sitting up from the wall and looking over at Bucky.
“Would you believe anything that comes from him?” Bucky asked, resting his arm on the desk.
Bucky had a point. Over the years, you’ve learned not to trust what your father said. He made excuses and lies plenty of times. How he would be home for dinner, he would come to your birthday party, the lake house, even something as simple as reading you bedtime stories when you were little. Every time you started to believe him, he would disappoint you.
Sighing, you ran a hand through your hair and glanced at the screen again. “Print it out. Looks like we have to go see dear old dad tomorrow before work,” you huffed. You felt lost and alone. Charlotte was gone and you couldn’t ask her the truth. She never lied to you, but she never mentioned being married before Michael either.
Collecting the scrapbooks off of Bucky’s bed, he began printing out the page and watched you. “It’s gonna be okay, you know,” he spoke softly, seeing how frustrated you were.
You looked over as you held the books to your chest. “I wish I could believe that,” you sighed before leaving his room.
Sleep didn’t come easy that night. Thankfully when you ordered groceries, you managed to remember some sleeping pills on the list. It wasn’t much, just a couple to help you get at least a couple hours. And you did. Of course the nightmare decided to change from the men shooting at you to replaying the memory of seeing the man being shot over and over again. By your hand at that. You weren’t a killer. You begged Michael not to make you pull the trigger. Bucky was nowhere to be found.
Bucky woke you up that morning after hearing your cries again. You shot up, tears streaming down your face as you clung to his arm. It was a first. Usually you woke up and told him to go back to sleep. You never touched him, but today you needed a little bit of comfort and he didn’t put you away. Instead, he pulled your back to his side, the arm you clung to holding you close, his free hand brushing your hair back.
“Shh, you’re awake now,” he whispered, feeling how you shook under his hold. His fingers softly caressed your stomach and you could feel the heat radiating off of his bare chest. He knew you needed this too and frankly he was tired of hearing your cries. You deserved a better life.
He held you until you slowly let go of his arm and moved back to your spot on the bed, facing him. “I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have-“
“Hey, it’s okay. If you need a hug to calm down, I can do that,” Bucky nodded, reaching out to wipe your leftover tears away.
“How do you handle all of the death?” You asked, reaching up and taking his hand, cupping it between both of yours.
Bucky thought for a minute, frowning. “I saw too much of it over the years. Being in combat sort of threw me into it without a crash course. I…do still have nightmares. Every night. Sometimes I’m still out in the field with my men, sometimes it’s things I’ve done while working for Michael. I just have to remember that I’m still alive for a reason. And right now, my reason to make sure you stay alive,” he explained, feeling your fingers brush soft lines on his palm.
“But what about after this is over? Whether all of the deals are done or I get killed like my mom? What’s your reason then?” You asked.
Bucky had to think for a moment. “Then I live for me I guess. I never really thought about what the reason was, only that there must be one.”
You nodded softly, looking down at his hand. “Thank you,” you whispered.
Bucky smiled and squeezed your hand. “Hey, get dressed. Neither of us ate last night and I’m starving. I want to take you to a place I like before we do what we have to,” he suggested, though he was fully ready for you to protest food.
You knew food wouldn’t be easy to hold down, but it also wasn’t a good idea to go on an empty stomach. Especially since you worked later.
“Okay,” you nodded.
Bucky gave your hand one last squeeze and left the room, shutting the door behind him.
On the other side of that door, Bucky hated the smile he got while thinking of you. A bratty mafia princess and now…he found himself wanting to make sure she was happy no matter what the circumstance.
Dammit. He had to reel those feelings back in quickly. You were his job. His boss's daughter.
The two of you got ready and within an hour, you found yourself in a little cafe. A little hole in the wall place that seemed to rely on regulars to keep it going. Bucky chose a booth in the back, making sure he could see the whole place in case something were to happen.
“How did you manage to find this place?” You asked, taking a sip of the coffee you ordered. The food was already cooking, pancakes for you both as well as extra bacon.
“I used to come here a lot growing up. There used to be tons of people who visited. Now it’s competing with the big chain restaurants. They won’t let it go until it can’t run anymore, so that’s what I really like about it,” Bucky leaned back in his seat. He wore his usual jeans, blue Henley, and a jacket with gloves. You had a change of work clothes in the car, only opting to wear a red tee and some black jeans out.
“If things start to settle…we should come back here,” you suggested, surprising him. Were you really trying to ask him to be friends outside of the job?
“I’d like that,” Bucky smiled just as the food came out.
“Oh thank god. Smells delicious as always, Pam,” he chuckled as the waitress put the plates down in front of both of you.
“Thank you,” you looked up at her while also trying to burn the sound of Bucky’s laugh into your brain.
Wait, were you falling for the man? Wanting to hear his laugh more? Jesus, something was wrong with you. You wanted out of the mafia life and here you were, finding the guard dog that you were saddled with extremely attractive when he wasn’t annoyed.
The two of you ate in silence more or less. You had been more hungry than you thought by the way you scarfed down the pancakes. Both you and Bucky shared the plate of bacon, though you didn’t want to admit you ate a couple more pieces than him.
When the food was gone and you were back in the car, you knew what you had to do next.
“We don’t have to go today, you know,” Bucky said as he glanced over while at a stop light.
“I know. I just…if I don’t do it now, I’m gonna think about it until we do and it’s going to fuck with me. I already feel nauseous. I need to know, Bucky,” you spoke, looking from the window to him.
Bucky nodded gently and turned the radio up, already having realized music had a tendency to calm you a little.
Not long after, you found yourself in the elevator with Bucky, heading up to your fathers floor. You didn’t get as many weird looks this time, only because you weren’t in obnoxiously short shorts. Those were in the car.
You told his Secretary that you were there to see him and that it was urgent. Of course he thought it had to do with being followed, so he excused the meeting from his office. The men walked out before you and Bucky walked in.
You wasted no time putting the piece of paper along with the baby photo of you on his desk in front of him. “What is this and when were you going to tell me mom was married before? To the asshole trying to have me killed?” Your voice raised slightly.
Michael picked up the photo of you and looked in the background, closing his eyes for a moment to steady him.
“Never. You’re my daughter, I raised you. He was nothing, terrible to Charlotte,” Michael spoke.
You glared at him, moving to sit on one of the chairs while Bucky sat beside you. “So I’m not even related to you?”
Michael sighed. “Not by blood, no.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?” You asked, leaning forward.
“We had no intention of telling you. Look, your mother and Alexander…they were kids in love. But then he got into the mafia business and things went south with them. He became vile. Her and I had met over the years because of meetings and galas, so I offered everything to stay at my home when she couldn’t take his antics. She had you before then. You were almost three when the two of you came to live with me and…we fell in love,” Michael spoke, a look in his eye and a tone in his voice that showed that he did indeed miss her.
“Why did that man say that they killed mom?” You asked, sitting more on the edge of your seat now.
Michael got up from his chair and walked over to the window, looking out at the busy street. “Because they did. There was a rat in the midst of my group. Sitwell. He had been tasked to watch over your mom since you were at school. He…poisoned her. Small doses of thallium,” he crossed his arms as you furrowed your brow, about to open your mouth to ask what it was but Bucky spoke before you could.
“Rat poison.”
Your eyes grew and your hands gripped together. “So what, he killed mom because she left him and he’s trying to kill me too?” You asked. You remembered Jasper but you never spent time around him. You were a teenager and a bratty one at that. Everytime he offered to make you food or something to drink, you rolled your eyes and made your own food. Now you know why he was so pushy.
Michael nodded and moved away from the window. “That’s one reason I decided after she passed that you should have your freedom. You weren’t directly involved with me nor any of the mafia business you’ve hated for so long. It gave you time to have a life. I hoped they wouldn’t be able to find you, but they did. To be fair, you lived a better life here than you would have with him,” he tilted his head.
Rolling your eyes, you leaned back in your chair. “This is just great. Well at least I’m not related to you. Makes sense on why you were never there for me growing up. Mom deserved better though. Just…” getting up from your chair, you were ready to pull your hair out. “Do something about Pierce. I don’t want to lose my life because of choices others have made for me. Afterwards, I don’t want to be a part of this. I’m changing my name and moving far away from anyone who could track me back to this shit. And to think, I was hoping you were doing this because you cared about me. No, I’m basically a pawn in this. One wants me alive and another wants me dead. I should have let Sitwell poison me,” you ranted, angering Michael farther.
“Y/N!” He yelled, making your footfalls pause. “I do care about you. You’ve been like a daughter to me and that’s why I’ve been doing this. Making those deals with Pierce. It kept him at bay, or so I thought. Your mother knew you were supposed to have a life and right now I’m trying to make that happen for you. Hell, I’ll give you the money to move but what I need from you right now is to stop acting like a child. I put you in Bucky’s care for a reason and so far he’s proving more than capable. If all of this ends and you want to tell us to fuck off and not see us again, then by all means. But until then, you need to stay quiet and safe,” Michael leaned against his desk, glaring at you.
“Bucky,” you glanced to him. “Let’s go. I have a job to get to.” Leaving the photo and the printed out wedding announcement, you stepped out of Michael’s office. Bucky gave Michael a tight nod before following you out.
All of the anger that had come to a head slowly started to dissipate. You knew he was right. He did what he needed to keep you safe, but it felt like your whole life had been a lie. While you were falling apart on the inside, Bucky stayed quiet and walked you to the car. He didn’t particularly like the idea of you running off and leaving the city, let alone the state. Of course it was your choice but he hated the feelings in his chest, telling him to be there for you as more than just a guard dog.
Work was somewhat easy that night. It was an early weekday which meant it was just the regular drunks. Bucky sat at his designated table while you and Courtney worked the bar. When you had a minute, you would refill Bucky’s drink and make sure he was okay.
“I’m more worried about you,” Bucky whispered as you say a basket of fries down in front of him.
“I’ll be fine. Just got a couple more hours and then we can go,” you spoke softly, patting his shoulder.
Those couple hours passed by quicker than you expected, and you were on your way home.
“You know, after this is done…keep my number, okay? If I gotta fly out to help you with something, I will,” Bucky said, breaking the silence as you straightened out the tips you made.
Looking over with a furrowed brow, you set the money in your purse. “You don’t have to. I know you’re only doing this because of da…Michael,” you corrected yourself. You had no dad.
“At first, yeah. But would a guard dog really go so far as scouring the Internet for information about your mom? I don’t think so. Or let you cuddle their arm when you wake from a nightmare?” Bucky gave you a look as if to say he wasn’t just a bodyguard, he was a friend.
“Yeah, I guess. Let’s just see what happens, okay?” You asked, but you really should have chosen a better set of words.
And a better stoplight to catch a red at.
Immediately gunshots rang out and broke the windows. You screamed, sliding down in your seat. Bucky started to drive away but when he started to swerve, you looked over to see blood gushing from his chest.
“No, no, no!” You yelled. Hiking your leg over the console, you hit the gas and grabbed the wheel. “Siri, call Michael!” You managed to slide your phone out from your pocket and put it on speaker.
At four am, the streets were somewhat bare so it was easier to speed away.
“Hello?” Michael’s tired voice spoke from the other end.
“Bucky’s been hit! Just got off work and people started shooting. I’m driving us away but he’s passed out,” you spoke, giving him the next street you drove down until more shots rattled off. You hit the gas and pushed the car to top speeds trying to take roads to Michael’s house. He always had some men there.
“Y/N,” Bucky gasped, his speech slurring slightly.
“Stay awake, Buck. Please,” you begged, setting your phone down onto the dashboard. With one hand you drove, the other you pushed on Bucky’s wound to keep pressure on it, and you still had one leg in the footwell of the passenger side. Talk about multitasking.
One of Bucky’s hands rested on your back, trying hard to keep himself awake. He heard tires screeching and that’s when three of Michael’s cars passed you and started shooting the men who started the gunfire.
Slowing down, you pulled over as Michael left one of the cars that stuck with you.
Sliding into the passenger seat, the driver's door was pulled open.
Getting out, an ambulance that no doubt Michael had on his payroll rolled up and quickly they got Bucky in. You started to jump in the back but Michael protested.
“He’s no good to you right now,” he said, tugging on your hand.
Pulling away from him, you stared him down. “He’s the only understanding one right now and I’m not going to let him die,” you yelled before jumping in the back of the ambulance.
You really, really hoped he didn’t die.

It all started on a sunny Tuesday. You and Bucky were currently laying on the sofa in the common room of the tower, Bucky was laying between your legs, his hips were on yours pining you down so you couldn’t move, not that you want too anyway.
It was a bad day today. You knew it was because he was like a lost puppy dog following you around all day begging for his safe place.
And that’s how you ended up pinned under a super soldier, with his face gently nestled in between your boobs while you were reading your book. A comforting silence washed over you both, making Bucky sigh with calmness. His hands trying to go around you so he could be closer, so you arched your back slightly to help him and relaxed when he connected his arms.
You heard a muffled “thank you” causing you to giggle slightly at the vibrations in your chest.
“You’re most welcome bubba.” You whispered, kissing the top of his head as to not disturb the peaceful silence between you both.
It was a little over an hour when your silence was interrupted by the ding of the elevator, causing you to look up from your book to see Sam walking out with his head in his phone.
“Hey.” He greeted, doing a double take. “What is he doing?”
“Hi, Sam.” You greeted back, smiling at him, and then going back to your book. “It’s not a good day today.”
Sam nodded understandingly, hearing a muffled “piss off pigeon” causing him to shake his head as you giggled again from the vibrations.
“Feel better soon, Tin Man.” Sam called before walking away, making Bucky growl into your chest.
“Hey. Less of that.” You scolded playful as he whined, snuggling into your boobs more and sighing happily.
He wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.
You are Bucky’s safe place.

RECAP: “Do I know you?” Axel asked as he pointed the weapon at Bucky. “You look familiar but I know you don’t belong ‘round these parts.”
“Nah.” Bucky smirked, not showing an ounce of fear as he looked down the barrel of the gun. “I’m just here for her hands.”

“The fuck did you say?” Axel growled as he stepped closer to Bucky but you moved in to intercept him.
“Ax, I’m just fixing his bike.” You said as you placed your hand on his gun arm and tried to lower it. “That’s all.”
“Not that it is any of your business.” Bucky commented.
You wished he would go back to being quiet, you didn’t understand why he was suddenly talkative but you would certainly ask if you all made it out of this moment alive. For now you had to try to stop your ex from putting a bullet in Bucky’s brain. That goal was getting harder by the second as he glared down at Axel and neither man looked ready to back down from the staring contest.
“You are not helping, Bucky.” You pointed to him before poking Axel in his leather clad chest. “And you, you know better than to come here. Go home to your wife and fix your fucking fence.”
“When did you grow a set of balls?”
Axel sneered at your sudden confidence but there was something about knowing Bucky was there and fearless that gave you the courage to talk to him in ways you never had before.
“Just get off my property.” You sighed and pointed out the garage door. “You’re not the only one with a gun, remember.”
“You’re lucky I’m late for church.” He growled before getting up in Bucky’s face. “You touch my girl, you’re dead.”

You shook your head with a bitter laugh. “You going in unarmed would not make me feel better.”

“Are you doing anything this weekend?”
You straightened up from where you had been bent over the engine of a Subaru and turned to see Bucky leaning against your workbench.
“When did you get here?” You asked as you looked around the empty workshop, Chip and Dale long gone.
“Few minutes ago, I didn’t want to interrupt.” He admitted with a smirk. “So this weekend?”
For the last three weeks Bucky had rolled into the parking lot at 7 o'clock on the dot and you had quickly grown used to the routine that had formed. He would take you out for dinner then quietly watch you work on his bike, slowly beginning to like your music that played in the background, before going upstairs and watching a movie. Sometimes they were modern, sometimes they were black and white pictures of a bygone era. You didn’t mind what you watched, your attention was more on the man beside you than the tv.

Bucky’s Masterlist
“Excuse me, sir, you need to pay for that.” Your words were polite but your tone was cool as you caught the would-be thief's hand by the wrist.
His face was mostly hidden by the cloak that wrapped around his shoulders, the hood only revealing a pair of oceanic eyes. The apple fell from his fingers and you caught it before it could land among the rest and bruise them, lowering the sale price even more.
“The cost?” He asked quietly, a satiny voice that seemed too smooth for a man in a filthy, raggedy cloak filled with holes larger than your fist.
His eyes fell to the fruit with longing and you felt sorry for him, looking over your shoulder to see your boss in a conversation with another market vendor. “A smile.”
He blinked slowly as he turned all his attention to you, his hood falling back a bit to reveal a pair of full, pink lips. “A smile?”
“You think it too much, sir?” You teased as you held the ruby red apple up.
“Hardly.” He chuckled, his lips curling into a smile that left your pulse racing and he leant in closer, his teeth biting into the apple in your hand. You were mesmerised by the way his jaw clenched with every chew until his adams apple bobbed with his swallow and you swallowed deeply in appreciation. “I would have been willing to part with a kiss.”
Your lips parted with a sharp intake of breath but before you could respond there was a commotion breaking out as soldiers entered the marketplace. A King’s guard marched towards your stall and you reeled back in fear as he raised his spear, only to stab it into the ground and salut.
“Your Majesty,” the guard bowed, “it is the Queen Mother. She urgently requests your presence in the palace.”
The apple fell from your grasp, the pure flesh landing among the filth on the floor, much like the King entering the lowly marketplace. You fell to your knees in the mud and bowed your head as your eyes filled with fearful tears, begging for forgiveness and leniency for touching him - an act punishable by death. A warm finger curled beneath your chin and tipped your head back to see those bright eyes and you chided yourself for being so foolish. Eyes like that could belong to only one man, King James.
“Stand.” He beckoned as the pressure to your chin increased and you rose up as gracefully as you could.
“I’m sorry, your Majesty, I didn’t know it was you. Forgive me.” You whispered as the tears broke the line of your lashed defence, streaking over your cheeks to spill on his hand.
“You didn’t know it was me.” He nodded in agreement, his hand coming to rest on the silver and gold hilt of his sword. “Yet you were still offered your goods for a smile.”
“I did.” Your body trembled as you confessed and you closed your eyes while you waited for him to draw the sword and end your life with one fell swoop.
“Steven, bring the lady to the palace.”
You opened your eyes and saw the guard that had met the King look you over before nodding. A crowd was already gathering and you could hear their whispers spreading rumours as you took the guard's arm that he offered, wishing you could run in the opposite direction.
“He’s made a mistake, I’m no lady.” You pleaded with Steven as you watched the King shrug off his hooded cloak, revealing a fine suit beneath. “I’m just a farmer’s daughter.”
“Just stay calm, take a deep breath.” Steven said before you heard him whisper to himself. “They’re gonna eat you alive.”
You knew there was no point fighting but your pace slowed until Steven’s hold on you tightened and your sandals began to skid through the dirt.
“Listen up, farmer’s daughter.” Steven growled beneath his helm as he turned his ice blue eyes down to you. “The King has given his order, now I am going to deliver you to the palace but it is up to you whether it is on your own two feet or not. I have no quarrels with tossing you over my shoulder if it makes my life easier.”
You sighed in defeat before grabbing your linen skirt and tugging it up so you could march faster towards Steven’s horse. The beast was huge and nothing like the old girl that slowly dragged the plough through the fields at home. This was a royal steed, purebred for strength and stamina in wars, and from the heavy stomping of his hoof he did not seem happy to have his rider replaced.
“Steady, Boulder.” Steven soothed his horse as he ran his palm along its neck before it reared back and snorted, steam exploded from his nostrils like the dragon on his crest.
“She’ll ride with me.”
The King had seen the fear in your eyes as Boulder reared and he pulled the reins in your direction, leading his golden haired stallion towards you. You looked between both horses, their muscles rippling beneath shiny coats and standing at the same height.
“I could walk.” You muttered as you looked to the distant palace. “I promise you, I won’t dally.”
“Nonsense. Now get on.” James ordered as he held his hand down for you.
You looked at the leather riding glove and swallowed the lump in your throat as you placed your hand in his. His strength surprised you and you barely caught the small squeal that built as he pulled your feet off the ground and over the space he left in front of him.
“Wonderful.” You grumbled to yourself as you rearranged your tangled skirt layers and settled into the hard saddle. “This is just perfect.”
“More than you know.” James’ voice was barely more than a whisper before he cleared his throat and clicked his tongue to set his horse off at a trot. “You are going to hear things in the palace that should not be repeated. Do you understand?”
“I don’t understand.” You shook your head. “I did one good deed and now I am to be punished. No, your Majesty, I don’t understand anything.”
“You are not being punished.” James sighed, the sway of the horse’s walk rocking his lips closer to your ear. “And, please, when it is just us you can call me Bucky.”
You turned your head away with a scoff and watched the cherry blossoms opening as the sun rose higher over the land, warming the cool spring air. You would have thought the day perfect for a ride, if only you had a choice on where it was you were headed.
The crunch of hooves of the gravel path began to grate on your nerves and your spine stiffened as the towers of the palace began to peek over the trees. You were so rigid that when you felt Bucky’s hands loosen the reins and come to rest on your knees you jerked and nearly fell off his horse.
“Sorry, habit of riding alone.” He chuckled as his hands caught your waist and steadied you back in front of him. “You can hold the reins if you wish.”
You shook your head rapidly at the thought of trying to control such a beast and leant away from them as if the leather bands were a pair of vipers. The retreat pressed your back into Bucky’s chest and you felt his lips brush lightly over your neck, a gasp escaping your lungs at the electric shocks the touch sent down your body.
“I’ll take that as a no then.” He chuckled quietly in your ear, goosebumps prickling over your skin as he once again gripped the reins and laid the fists over your skirt.
Every jostle shifted his hands and your heartbeat harder every time, a similar beat beginning to throb between your legs.
“Bucky?” You asked, feeling his chest rumble with a deep hmmm in response. “If I am not being punished, why am I being taken to the palace?”
His chest rose and fell against your back as he pondered how to answer you until he could see no good outcome for any excuse he gave. “You’ll see.”
The dress you had been gifted was unlike anything you had ever worn before. The fine embroidery told a story with its delicate thread, roses and dragons, thorns and fire. The theme danced around the skirt while the corseted bodice left you feeling breathless but beautiful.
You were desperate to find Bucky and get answers but every time you asked where the King was you were shushed and told to be patient. Patience was not your virtue and you struggled to sit still as the ladies surrounding you tried to arrange your hair that now smelt of rose water and patchouli. You had offered to do it yourself but quickly closed your mouth at the glare reflected in the mirror.
“May I come in?” Bucky asked with a knock at the door.
“It’s your palace, your Majesty.” You replied as you rolled your eyes before you cried out in pain and saw the seamstress waving her needle at you in threat of another poke.
“Everything alright?” Bucky asked as he heard you and pushed the door open. “Oh, wow, you look absolutely stunning.”
Your eyes turned to the floor as you shied away from his heated gaze, your fingers tracing the golden thread of the dragon's head. “Thank you, your Majesty.”
He stepped closer to you and held his elbow out for you to take, your silk gloved hand coming to rest lightly on his forearm. “Did I mention how wonderful you look?”
“It’s the dress.” You mumbled as you followed his lead through the candlelit halls. “It’s very beautiful.”
“It is, but so are you.”
You were sure the silver necklace that hung around your neck would melt from the heat you were producing but the ruby pendant remained set between the valley of your breasts. Unable to form a reply without confirming that he had your mind in a tizz, you remained silent and focused on walking in the heeled shoes that had been buckled to your feet.
“I know I have been secretive about why you are here, and I am sorry for that.” Bucky said as he came to a stop outside a fair of formidable iron doors. “I am also sorry for what you are about to hear but I hope you will forgive me in time.”
The air froze in your lungs as the doors opened and you were led into the formal receiving room that was filled with royal advisors and the Queen Mother. Bucky’s mother rose to her feet as she saw her son, her eye’s barely giving you a cursory glance before she descended on the King.
“What is this I hear of you traipsing through the market like a peasant?” You struggled not to flinch at the icy tone of his mother and instead focused on the feel of Bucky’s muscles clenching in his forearm as his hand formed a strained fist. Looking up you saw his cheek ticking, the shadow of a beard sharpening his jawline as he suppressed his blatant anger. “I have spent the entire month convincing King Anthony to arrange a marriage with his daughter and on the day of her arrival you are nowhere to be seen.”
“You shouldn’t have troubled yourself needlessly.” Bucky stated.
“Needlessly?” She scoffed. “You know the law, you need a Queen to produce an heir if you wish to remain on that throne your father died to put you on.”
Bucky’s free hand came to rest on yours, a small squeeze given as he squared off with his mother. “I need a wife, not a Queen.”
You tried to pull away as Winnifred turned her cold eyes on you but Bucky held your hand firm, his strength overpowering yours tenfold. She may have been shorter than you with her age but she still managed to look down her nose, scrutinising every part of you - even the depth of your soul seemingly. Other than the wide eyed, petrified look on your face there was no way of knowing you were one of the ‘peasants’ from the marketplace, you looked as adorned and pampered as the rest of the ladies in the room.
Turning back to her son, you breathed a sigh of relief that her intense stare was no longer on you. “You would crown a nobody when you could have a princess?”
“I would rather crown a kind nobody than have another frigid bitch living within these walls, mother.”
His fingers tightened on your arm as he felt you trying to pull away. The corset suddenly seemed too tight and you couldn’t draw the air needed into your lungs.
“The poor woman is going to faint. She will never survive Court.” Winnifred laughed, turning her back on the King and walking back to her chair set aside from the pair of thrones centre to the room. “Tell me, darling, the treasury is waning - what dowry do you bring? What can you do to make this union profitable?”
You hadn’t known the country was in a dire financial state, in fact, from the lavish balls that were thrown each month behind the high palace walls you would have thought the opposite. Clearing your throat, Bucky looked at you with surprise as you stepped forward with a sudden fire in your belly. You didn’t want to marry the man you had just met, you didn’t want to be standing in the throne room of the palace, but since that was where you were you had a duty to your fellow lower class people to speak up.
“For starters, tax the rich.” You stated boldly, a chorus of scoffs and mocking laughter circling the room before the previous Queen held up her hand to silence them.
“And when they revolt? How will you stop them from fighting?”
It was your turn to laugh as you shook your head incredulously. “I’m not sure how battles were fought back in your day, your highness, but I’ve never seen the rich or royal fight. You hide in the safety of your palaces while you send poor sons and fathers to their death.”
You turned to look around the room, glad to see at least a few ashamed faces unable to hold your stare until you face Bucky, that same smile he had given you in the market sending your heart racing. His arm curled around your waist and he nodded to his mother before guiding you back out of the room, his grin never wavering as the heavy doors closed behind you.
Pulling yourself from his touch you turned and poked your finger into his hard chest. “You smile at the idea of war?”
“Not in the slightest.” He smiled with a shake of his head. “There are very few people who would disagree with my mother. Ever since I saw you arguing with the forecourt master, I knew there was something special about you.”
Your feet stumbled as you remembered the argument the week prior. The price of hiring a market stall had increased twice in the last quarter and it was getting harder to sell products with the inflation - customers opting to travel further out of the city to where prices were cheaper. There had been an audience to the arguments but you hadn’t paid enough attention to the individuals to notice if there had been a cloaked figure among them.
“Why have you been watching me?” You asked as you backed away from the King, the hem of the long dress tripping you and nearly sending you falling into a tall candelabra.
Bucky surged forward and caught you around the waist, your breasts straining dangerously close to the top of the corset as he cradled your arched back and you threw your arms around his neck in case his strength failed. “Because I require a wife to keep my title, and I think you have the qualities needed in a Queen.”
“I’m not a royal.”
“There is no written law that you have to be, trust me, I have read them all.” Bucky sighed, pulling you upright but keeping you in his arms.
“How can I trust you? I don’t even know you. This morning I was ankle deep in mud selling fruit and now I’m,” you tugged at the dress, falling short on the word you wanted, “this. It isn’t me. I’m sorry but you should marry the Stark princess, your Majesty.”
“Forget the dress, just for a minute, forget the hair and the jewellery, even the palace.” Bucky begged, his eyes glowing bright in the midday sun that filtered through the windows of the hall. “You are brave, everyone in that room has witnessed it first hand. You understand business and commerce, albeit on a smaller scale than a whole country - but it’s really not that different. Most of all, you care about other people - even when there is no benefit to you. That is a rare sight to see and it was the moment I knew you were the one to rule at my side.”
“Bucky, stop.” His fingers tipped your head back and you could feel the warmth of his breath across your cheek, your body ready to betray your mind as he leant in, but you turned away at the last moment. “You claim to know my character but you have yet to ask the most basic information about me.”
“I’m not saying this will be easy, and I promise we will get to know each other with time.” He sighed.
“So you don’t even want to know what my name is? My birthday? Where I live?”
“You think I didn’t find all this out before I arranged our wedding?” He chuckled. “I know everything about you, Y/N. That is why I know you are perfect for me.”
The room began to spin as his confession battered around in your brain. “I can’t marry you.”
“You can and you will.” Bucky promised as he cradled your cheek while you froze beneath his touch. “Your father has already accepted it, with more than fair share of remuneration I might add, so I suggest you do too - and quickly.”
You swallowed the lump in your throat and sagged in defeat, knowing your family needed the money as much as you needed your head to live, something that you were at risk of losing if you disrespected the King. “Fine.”
“I know this isn’t what you wanted, but we can learn to love each other.” He murmured gently as his thumb stroked your cheekbone. “You can’t deny the spark between us.”
You closed your eyes, the small shake of your head giving him hope as he wrapped his arms around you. There was no way to deny it, in his arms you could almost forget where you were as his scent drove you wild and his touch threatened to set your body on fire. Resting your head on his shoulder you hoped he was right, but only time would tell.
