NICNEVIN: SCOTTISH GODDESS OF SAMNHAIN

“In modern practice Nicnevin is believed to ride out on The Wild Hunt at Samhuinn Eve as The Queen of Elphame with her spirits and mysterious creatures, whereas others say her sacred days are 9th and 11th November. Yule or Midwinter is also said to be sacred to her. Nicnevin can be called upon for aid in otherworldly travel, communicating with spirits, protection at night, and pretty much everything within the domain of witchcraft. “

Black Salt AKA Witch’s Salt

So firstly, to be clear, we’re not talking about the black salt used in Indian cuisine, which is volcanic rock salt and found in some supermarkets. The Black Salt we’re talking about here is generally homemade. I’ve seen various ‘recipes’, with increasing numbers of ingredients so I’m going to outline the basics for you.

Why use Black Salt?

Black Salt is used for banishments, removal of negative energies and protection. It can be sprinkled around doorways and windows to protect the home, left in a dish under the bed to protect from nightmares or added to baths after a stressful day. It can also be used in jinxes, hexes and curses. Used for protection, it should be swept away/disposed of regularly (anything from once a week to once a month, depending on the degree/frequency of negativity it’s dealing with). Black things in witchcraft (salt, crystals, candles) are used to absorb and dispell negativity, and so need cleansing/recharging/renewing regularly in order to keep doing their job. Unused Black Salt can be kept for future use, preferably in an airtight container made of natural materials.

How do I make Black Salt?

Black Salt can be as coarse or as fine as you would like. You could mix together the ingredients as they come to you, or grind them yourself and then combine. In it’s purest form, Black Salt is made up of just two ingredients, in roughly equal measures:

Salt Ash

Easy. Sea salt or Kosher salt are prefered. For the ash, any source is fine but sources linked to magic are best. Some possible sources are:  Incense ash (cone or stick) Herb bundle ash Paper ashes (from burning lists etc)* Charcoal disc ash (used for burning loose incense) Fireplace ash Barbeque ash

*It is not recommended to keep ash for future use if it was created during banishing, letting go, jinxing, hexing or cursing. These should be disposed of immediately after the ritual/spell is complete. Depending on the ash used you may find your Black Salt doesn’t actually look particularly black. The colour black adds power, as it absorbs negativity and banishes ill-meaning spirits. There are a couple of ways you can remedy that if you wish to, just gradually add as much as you need to get the desired colour: Activated charcoal Food colouring

One more common ingredient used to strengthen Black Salt is black pepper. Fresh ground is slightly more potent but powdered will work fine. A little goes a long way.

TL;DR - This is what you need to make Black Salt:

Salt Ash Activated charcoal or food colouring (optional) Black pepper (optional)

However you choose to make your Black Salt, remember that intention is key. As long as you are clear about what you want the product to achieve, you can get results with even the simplest of ingredients.

Lazy "Wards"

So today, I was lying in my bed, and I was thinking about how I desperately did not want to refresh my wards. I was feeling tired, burned out, frustrated, and just generally awful. I knew I needed to refresh them, but I also knew that it was going to take so much effort that I didn't have. Thus began the thought:

Is there an easier way to ward my space?

Turns out there is! Now, I know wards are normally random things you put in your room and re-do every once in a while, but ✨️these ones are fun and cool✨️. I compiled a list of the five easy wards I do for when I'm feeling absolutely AWFUL. Here they are!

Morning and Night Playlists

Make two playlists— one that you'll listen to as soon as you wake up, and one that you'll listen to right before you sleep. They don't have to have any specific genre; just do what you feel like you need during those times. Maybe even create a playlist cover photo if you're feeling inspired!

Turn your fan on

I am dead serious with this one, folks. It could technically be considered cleaning, but FUCK IT. Open your window and/or your door and turn on a fan. Let that air flush OUT the energy from inside and pull IN the good shit from outside. I would probably do this like once a week. Have fun with it! Maybe even play those playlists and have a whole dance party!

Stuffed Animal of the Month

That's right. You heard me. Choose a stuffed animal that will protect your space for a month. Next month, choose a different one. Repeat that for, like, forever or whatever. The important thing is that you choose a stuffed animal, you tell them "Hey, I need you to guard my shit," and you give them LOOOOTS of cuddles in return. I love this one a little too much.

Tape a picture of a sigil on your door

This one's for the people who are able to be out as a witch. If you can't do a sigil, even putting a picture of an animal or object is good enough! Just tape it to your door, either facing you or the outside, and let it do its thing.

Incense and screaming

This is more of a cleansing method than a ward. DO IT. Open your window and/or your door again, light that shit up, and scream out all the energy that you've been building up. Tell it to get-the-fuck-out or you'll roundhouse its ass. But also find the good shit and ask it to join you!

I hope yall like this post. I really liked making it!! These methods are probably not all new, and I'm most definitely not the one who invented them, but STILL. I like them and I hope you do too!

It’s Hard Sometimes To Stay Balanced While On The Road —

It’s hard sometimes to stay balanced while on the road —

you cast sigils, perform simple rites on the roof of your homestay in another strange city, pull morning tarot card and walk the streets carrying moon in your heart — still, that can be overwhelming, especially in these days of full moon.

It’s great time to sit with your pack of tarot cards and let yourself to dive deep.

This full moon spread for:

***someone meeting this full moon with a feeling - I wish to understand the life circle I’m moving through

***someone struggling these days with a lot of emerging stuff - insecurity, doubts, old emotional clutter

***overwhelmed wanderers, moving to fast witches, tired travelers

Tips:

*best to perform on the days when full moon energy is high - September, 13-15

*sit in moonlight if you have such an opportunity, be with the moon for a while, honor her, speak to her, feel her

*draw a simple picture of waning - full - waxing moons (like in the image below) to visualize the circles of changes

*sip your green tea

And here is the spread…

1 - what to let go

2 - what to keep

3 - things yet to come

4 - how the world affects you

5 - what to give

6 - what to receive

7 - what to learn

Enjoy!

And all the moon blessings!

Protection Pennies
Protection Pennies
Protection Pennies

protection pennies

I have been using protection pennies in my space warding for years now, and I find them to be a really useful aspect to my home wards. They are very simple and one dimensional, so they work best layered with other warding or protection practises. However, I do find them to be useful as a physical representation of protection.

ingredients:

shiny and clean pennies, one for each threshold that you wish to protect

salt, you can also use green or black salt

conker shells, or something else that is symbolic of protection

a black permanent marker

warding & protection sigils

method:

Take your pennies and wipe them over so that the surface is clean. Then, use your black marker to draw warding and protection sigils on the tail side of them.

Once the ink has dried on these, place them in or on something that you associate with a protective home. I used halves of a spiky conker shell, which there are lots of during this time of year. You could also use snail shells or sea shells, just make sure you are obtaining these ethically.

Cover your pennies with salt, you can make black salt for this step. This is where conker shells come in handy as they act as little bowls for the salt and the pennies.

Leave to charge for a little while, preferably under a dark or waning moon. Once they are charged, place the pennies above doorways, entrances and windows in your home. Ensure that your space is already cleansed before you place them.

Recharge periodically, either under the moon, with salt or with quartz crystals.
