He points out and praises efforts and improvements. He compliments qualities. He is proud when his child does better than him, not hurt. he was ALWAYS an evil, terrible, awful person. he didn’t just magically become evil one day. he was ALWAYS like that. he didn’t “love” the kids, he loved their powers and using them for his own gain. you could argue that he became crueller to el after the massacre because he believed she was a murderer and a dangerous weapon, but I don’t believe he was ever truly kind to the children in a way that wasn’t manipulative or self-serving. he is seen to be sad and angry when he sees the kids are dead, but he’s not sad because he loved them, he’s sad that his little lab rats are dead and he can’t experiment on them anymore.
