A girl stands alone in a field. The weight of the world is placed on her shoulders.
A farmer walks past. “please. help.” The girl says.
The farmer responds. “can’t you see I’m hauling this load of hay? How selfish must you be, asking me to set aside my own burden to help you”.
The farmer leaves.
A girl stands alone in a field. The weight of the world is placed on her shoulders.
A noblewoman walks past. “please. help.” The girl says.
The noblewoman responds. “Help you? You seem to be managing well on your own. How lazy must you be, asking for me to help a burden you can very well carry”.
The noblewoman leaves.
A girl stands alone in a field. The weight of the world is placed on her shoulders.
A knight walks past. “please. help.” The girl says.
The knight responds. “Whoever would I help you? Every man is given a burden to carry. How weak must you be, asking your burden be relieved”.
The knight leaves.
A girl stands alone in a field. Tears flow down her face. Her back is breaking. Her arms are so weak. She hasn’t felt her legs in days. The weight of the world is still on her shoulders. She lets it go. She is crushed.
News of the girl’s death reaches the capital.
“What a shame” said the farmer. “if only I could have helped”.
“What a shame” said the noblewoman. “if only I could have helped”.
“What a shame” said the knight. “if only I could have helped”.
A great memorial is erected in the capital, honoring the girl who gave so much.
“So selfless” said the farmer.
“So driven” said the noblewoman.
“So strong” said the knight.
“If I had met the girl” says the farmer, “I would’ve taken the weight from her. It would be easy for me to stow it in my cart”.
“If I had met the girl” says the noblewoman, “I would’ve taken the weight from her. I carry so little, it’s the least I could do”.
“If I had met the girl” says the knight, “I would’ve taken the weight from her. I am strong and noble, I could surely carry such a burden more readily than she”.
The girl is still dead.

Well, my brain thought of a dark prompt (tw: death)
You know the sad version of beautiful boy and everything? Well imagine if that was Raz dying during a mission, trying to calm down his kids after they found him almost dead (do I know how the kids got there, no) and during the last little bit if the song, Lili finally find the kids, next to their dying father as he giving them one last smile before he dies.
(GODDAMMIT MAKING ME CRY OVER HERE. WELP I guess every happy story should at least have a dark time-line or somthing for EDGE.)
TW I guess?? In case this bothers anyone, this is gonna be kinda sad, for losing a father/fatherly figure, injuries and blood, and also because my mutuals love to torment me and I'll be writing this through ugly tears :')
"Hurt? This is nothing. Now, what did I tell you two about staying away from danger?"
Is what Raz had said when he took the blow for the first time. Of course he was lying in hopes that his terrified kids wouldn't be so afraid. Of course he had adrenaline on his side then, too. But now, everything was starting to set in. His side ached with a numbing throb that seemed to grow by the second.
"I... I don't know what to do..." Dmitry said. His voice was shaking, his eyes were expressionless. His face was stuck with an emotion of disbelief. A major contrast to his brother who paced back and forth, on the verge of hysterics. "What can we do?!" Cecil cried. "This isn't what's supposed to happen!" He dug his fingers into his hair, his eyes darting around the room.
"Hey, hey little buddy, it's okay-" Raz tried to calm him down, but he quickly cut him off. "No! No it's not!" He sobbed. "He's just trying to help while he can!" Dmitry snapped. The boys began arguing. That's what they do. They are brothers, after all.
Raz groaned. He really didn't have the energy to shout at them to stop fighting. "Come on, knock it off you two..." The boys stopped and stared at him. Dmitry inhaled sharply, squeezing his eyes shut. Cecil still had tears streaming down his face. You would've thought he'd melt into a puddle at any moment. "Sorry..." They both said, quietly.
Raz held up both of his arms, best he could without making his injury hurt worse. He sighed and smiled. "Alright... Come here for a sec." The boys took a seat next to him. One on each side, and he put his arms around them.
"I probably should have told you boys that, missions aren't exactly like the comics. You don't always make it out alive, or unscathed." He looked at his side, dark red soaked his sweater. "Sometimes... the 'Hero' doesn't win... I-I'm sorry for the let down." He chuckled, but then groaned in pain.
"You're going to be okay." Dmitry said, his voice shaky but dull if determination. "You have to be okay!" Raz smiled sadly. "I'm afraid not, Dee. This is pretty bad." He winced, trying to move himself up a bit. Cecil wrapped his arms around Raz's neck, burying his head in his shoulder. "Please don't say that..." He sobbed. "Hey, hey! It's going to be alright Cece."
Dmitry rested his head on Raz's chest. "You're going to be alright though... right dad...?" He could feel tears begin to prick the corners of his eyes as he noticed how faint his fathers heartbeat was. Raz rested his hand on Dmitry's head.
"It'll be alright... It's nothing..."
psychonauts is a good series
