Whenever I Visit A City, I Try To Find The Weirdest Little Bookstore Tucked Away In It. Today I Found

Whenever I visit a city, I try to find the weirdest little bookstore tucked away in it. Today I found a very weird one indeed.

The front door has a handwritten sign saying "Backpacks and large bags must be left at front desk." I walk in, and an 80-year-old man at an 80-year-old desk covered in Dr. Seuss books and angel statues immediately drawls, "Ignore the sign. I didn't make it. What're you lookin' for?"

Ancient Rome, of course. He moseys through an aisle that clearly predates wheelchair accessibility laws, and waves at a bookshelf labeled ANCIENT HISTORY, sandwiched between WIMMIN and SPARKLY THINGS.

A bookshelf labeled "Women's misc" and "wimmin"
A bookshelf labeled "sparkly things"

On closer inspection, WIMMIN is actually the first of four book cases of women's history and biographies. There is no section for men's biographies. SPARKLY THINGS is jewelry, and conveniently located next to SCIENCE & HEAVY THINKING.

A bookshelf labeled "science & heavy thinking"

I select a useful-looking book from a surprisingly rich selection, then mosey on through the rest of the store, because you must mosey in a place so thoroughly Texan:

A book titled "God's Word for the Oil Patch: Fuel for the Soul | Oilfield Christian Fellowship." The Christian cross has been altered to resemble an oil rig.

The Christian selection is vast. But our book seller also has a nice range of Jewish literature, Islamic texts in the original Arabic, East Asian religions, and FURRIN LANGUAGE textbooks.

A bookshelf titled "furrin language"

I highlight the drawl out of love, not mocking. I have a drawl, and I think it's cool. (And also a little funny.) I was pleased to find a section on Black history, too.

Next to the Chronicles of Narnia we find MISC MILITARY, which features - what else? - guides for identifying aliens and practicing magic.

A bookshelf titled "misc military" with books stacked on it about UFOs and magic for beginners.

I joke, I joke - most of the store is perfectly well organized, and the family's World War I memorial and knick-knacks make it feel very personal and lived-in. And loved.

A corner of the ship with a classical style statue of a woman, a painting of a peacock feather, and a book on illuminated manuscripts.

On the second floor we find history and geography for specific countries, such as the RUSSKIES, more philosophy, and genealogy CHESS.

A bookshelf labeled "RUSSKIES"
A bookshelf formerly labeled "genealogy," now scribbled out and replaced with "chess"

Ah, the changing tastes of the American bookworm...Here we can also learn about SHOOTING BAMBI, STUFFING BAMBI, and HUNTIN.

Three bookshelves labeled "shooting Bambi," "stuffing Bambi" and "huntin"

And of course, the sign that made me realize I had to share this wonderful place with the rest of y'all, nestled between EDUCATIN CHILLERN and PRE-STRESSED CONCRETE:

A bookshelf labeled "20% off for children buying books on structural engineering or applications of pre-stressed concrete"

As I check out, I'm menaced by a lasso on the wall:

Whenever I Visit A City, I Try To Find The Weirdest Little Bookstore Tucked Away In It. Today I Found

"LARIAT: FORMERLY THE PROPERTY OF PECOS BILL. HE TRIED TO DUKE IT OUT WITH THE BOOKSELLER AND THE REST IS HISTORY."

Anyway. If you're ever in Fort Worth, Texas, do give Barber's Book Store a look. And if you ain't in Fort Worth, check out your nearest indie bookstore anyway. They often have really unique selections, and a feeling of history and personality that you don't get anywhere else. Barber's had a lot more variety than I showed here, and it's 99 years old!

An outdoor light-up sign saying "Books: Barber's Book Store, est. 1925."

As for what I bought? I think it's going to be very interesting...

Book titled "Slavery in the Roman Empire" by R.H. Barrow

what am i smiling at ? the made up scenarios of course

*taps mic* is this thing on? Yeah okay so every vampire in the vampire chronicles is turned at critical a moment in their lives and beyond just the body they are in when they are turned, their mentality stays at that standstill for their entire immortality, Lestat was turned against his will, he was clinging onto Magnus begging him to be freed, so he’s constantly seeking freedom and only finding loneliness and thus turning back to people again and again, however he can’t STAND being told what to do, since he desires agency in his life so desperately, Armand was turned after years and years of abuse and lack of control but such a desire for genuine love, by a man he ‘loved’ so wholly who he felt was barring his love from him, he needs control in his life, he needs a ‘master’ but he does not desire it, it does not fulfill him, he is trapped in a room but the door is unlocked! Louis was mourning his brother, he felt like an utter failure and so he’s always seeking family, seeking people he can care for, he can coddle, he can prove he is good too, but he loves people who either cannot stand coddeling and need a sense of looseness to live (Lestat) or people who grow out of coddling who prove to Louis he will always fail the people he loves (Claudia), Claudias turning, in many MANY ways mirrors lestats in that it was against her will, she was stolen from her home, and in her immortality she desires freedom but unlike Lestat does not have the agency/ form to get it, she will always be small, she will always be looked down on, even by Lestat who cannot deny how much she is just like him *taps mic* ARE YOU LISTENING TO ME!! NONE OF THEM CAN BREAK THE CYCLE!!! TO BREAK IT WOULD BE TO UNDO THE VERY FIBER OF THEIR IMMORTAL SELVES!! THE CYCLE IS THE BLOOD THEY DRINK IT IS THE HEART IN THEIR CHEST AND IT ROLLS AND ROLLS DOWN THE MOUNTAINS AND VALLEYS OF THEIR LOVE FOR EACH OTHER AND IT CAN NEVER BE STOPPED BECAUSE THEY WILL NEVER STOP LOVING EACH OTHER!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have to mention JWJ _Holloway's audio rps. They're sooo good and it's a shame that he's so underrated. He has impressive range and voices all the characters himself (if he had anyone else voice a character I don't remember). Not all of his rps are romance and focus on other types of relationships like parental, friendship, and mentor/protege which I enjoy.

Please give his stuff a watch, I recommend his SCP Hunters, steampunk mechanic, daughter of Kahn, Valentino, Russian and Viking audio rps.

.

Mine says 16 notes but I just need to know what possessed all of the bots. Someone help them

I think my favorite genre of fanfiction is when the author says something like "this was meant to be 3 chapters but it's actually going to be 5" in the notes at the end of a chapter and you can look up at the chapter count and it's like 15 or something

*goes up to a polyamorous triad* so which one of you unspools the thread of fate, which one measures it, and which one cuts it?

So, I saw this image on Facebook, and it was supposedly showing what Queen Nefertiti would have looked like in real life:

So, I Saw This Image On Facebook, And It Was Supposedly Showing What Queen Nefertiti Would Have Looked

Now, I thought this AI generated garbage was just truly terrible on a number of levels; first off, she looks wayyyyyy too modern - her makeup is very “Hollywood glamour”, she looks airbrushed and de-aged, and as far as I’m aware, Ancient Egyptians didn’t have mascara, glitter-based eyeshadows and lip gloss. Secondly, her features are exceptionally whitewashed in every sense - this is pretty standard for AI as racial bias is prevalent in feeding AI algorithms, but I genuinely thought a depiction of such a known individual would not exhibit such euro-centric features. Thirdly, the outfit was massively desaturated and didn’t take pigment loss into consideration, and while I *do* like the look of the neck attire, it's not at all accurate (plus, again, AI confusion on the detailing is evident).

So, this inspired me to alter the image on the left to be more accurate based off the sculpture’s features. I looked into Ancient Egyptian makeup and looked at references for kohl eyeliner and clay-based facial pigment (rouge was used on cheeks, charcoal-based powder/paste was used to darken and elongate eyebrows), and I looked at pre-existing images of Nefertiti, both her mummy and other reconstructions. While doing this, I found photos of a 3D scanned sculpture made by scientists at the University of Bristol and chose to collage the neck jewellery over the painting (and edited the lighting and shadows as best as I could).

So, I Saw This Image On Facebook, And It Was Supposedly Showing What Queen Nefertiti Would Have Looked

Something I see a lot of in facial recreations of mummies is maintaining the elongated and skinny facial features as seen on preserved bodies - however, fat, muscle and cartilage shrink/disappear post mortem, regardless of preservation quality; Queen Nefertiti had art created of her in life, and these pieces are invaluable to developing an accurate portrayal of her, whether stylistic or realistic in nature.

So, I Saw This Image On Facebook, And It Was Supposedly Showing What Queen Nefertiti Would Have Looked

And hey, while I don't think my adjustments are perfect (especially the neck area), I *do* believe it is a huge improvement to the original image I chose to work on top of.

I really liked working on this project for the last few days, and I think I may continue to work on it further to perfect it. But, until then, I hope you enjoy!

researching 17th century piracy tonight. came across this:

One popular pastime amongst pirates was the mock trial.  Each man played a part be it jailer, lawyer, judge, juror, or hangman.  This sham court arrested, tried, convicted, and “carried out” the sentence to the amusement of all. (x)

how widespread could this have really been? how would it have gotten passed from ship to ship? can you imagine a pirate crew at a tavern, bragging to another pirate crew about how good they are at playing pretend? why was their go-to game “legal system”? were they performing incisive satire? is this some sort of pirates-only inside joke that’s been lost to the ages?
