How to write a character-driven plot

The Character-Driven Plot Wheel

1. Emotions drive actions.

Make your hero act on their deepfelt emotions. This not only adds meaning to their actions, but also helps communicate to readers your hero’s core emotional struggle.

2. Actions trigger consequences.

When your hero acts, give their actions consequences that affect the plot, themselves, and/or the surrounding characters. For example, driven by curiosity, maybe your hero opens Pandora’s box; maybe they act recklessly and someone dies; or maybe they stand up for what they believe in, but at great personal cost. Consequences raise the stakes and empower your hero with agency.

3. Consequences compel change.

Use the consequences of your hero’s actions to create a crucible of growth — challenges and situations that force them to take the next step on their character journey. That step may be forward, or backward, and it may be large or small; but something inside them changes.

4. Change influences emotions.

When a character goes through a change, even a small one, allow it to affect them emotionally. Maybe they feel increasingly frustrated or guilty. Maybe they’re afraid, having just taken another step closer to abandoning their old way of seeing the world. Or maybe they finally feel peace.

Regardless of the form it takes, remember to reflect your hero’s change in their emotions. Then let their emotions drive action, to trigger consequences, which will compel further change.

Lather. Rinse. Repeat.

And there you have it! That’s how you write a character-driven plot.

AU where Tim has known who the Batfam are the whole goddamn time and pretends all his life not to know.

And the family all love Tim and will only go to the galas and shit if he’s there because he’s Nice and Sincere and seems to always give good advice as an observant third party. And if they ever need a favor or whatever from him he’s all “No problem!” Doesn’t ask too many questions. Gives them the benefit of the doubt. Just a true friend. One time Cass said “cause a scene” and Tim didn’t even ask why, he just comically tripped and knocked over the nearest ten foot ice sculpture.

So of course the batfam all secretly want him to know the truth. Like, yeah. It’s against the rules but Tim is their friend! He deserves the truth! He’s so trusting and honest with them and it makes them feel so guilty. Like everytime someone cancels lunch plans w/ him cuz of crime, he’s always so cool and understanding?? And they all feel so bad lying over and over to poor Tim who just naively believes them

So then individually all the batfam have the idea to “accidentally” let it slip who they really are.

One time Dick got “caught” wearing his Nightwing outfit and Tim was just like “Holy shit! Nice outfit! Way better than my Halloween costume” “Halloween? Tim, it’s August.” “Right? So cool that you’re into it enough you’d plan so far ahead” “uh. Yeah. Okay. Halloween. Sure”

Damian is at a gala when he curses and walks off to the bathroom, dragging Tim along with him, telling him he needs help resowing his stitches

Damian’s shoulder has a bite mark taken out of it courtesy of killer croc. Damian tries to explain, come clean about why he has this horrible wound,

“Drake. I’m sure you must be wondering why I have-”

“Oh, no. No need to explain. I know you love animals. And if you happened to break into the Gotham zoo to try and free the alligators and accidentally got bitten? Well, I’m sure Bruce doesn’t need to know”

“…yes. that is… exactly what happened. Truly, Drake, your detective skills are adequate. Even impressive”

“Don’t go all sappy on me here, Damian”

Timeline of Naruto Universe

For my own purposes, I want to sort out a timeline for how I’d like to believe the events unfolded, starting with the founding of the villages as Year 0. There are a lot of contradictory statements about how old people are, when the village would’ve existed, etc. One clear example: I have to disregard the statement that Hashirama became Hokage 67 years prior to Naruto’s events. Since he was Hokage at the time of Madara’s defection, it was actually 74 years prior to Part II at minimum that Hashirama became Hokage, based on the ages of Hashirama’s grandchildren. 

So a lot of this is going to be 1) pure conjecture and 2) selective reasoning. It’s also not going to pay much mind to birthdays aside from their year date, as that might make this overly complicated. It’s a fruitless endeavour, really, but I thought it’d be fun to try to make sense of it all. Below the dates I have character ages where it is useful or relevant, as well as notes on how it fits into the narrative/in respect to other established dates. I’m sure there are better and more precise ones that exist, but this one’s mostly just for me anyway.

So without further ado, here’s my timeline:

Year 0: Konohagakure is founded; village system established 

Characters: Hashirama and Madara approx. age 25

Notes: Konoha is founded in the years following Izuna’s death, who is approximately 24 when he dies. Madara and Hashirama both appear to be 1-2 years older than their siblings based on their appearances as children.

what if it seems like batman has safehouses all over the country because he’s a paranoid maniac always ready to go into hiding in iowa, but actually he just goes on a lot of business trips for his day job and when he sees a cute house he buys it and stays there. he grew up in a big mansion with a butler, a house with only three rooms is like camping for him. he thinks it’s fun. he gets to play house and eat cereal for dinner. the flash accidentally committed some light treason and needs to lay low for a while so batman sets him up at this little place in maine. flash is like “wow he really does plan for everything” but no, he just saw an old queen anne with green shingle siding and white accents and he couldn’t help himself. it had a wraparound porch and a spire. a spire. technically it wasn’t in his carefully alloted ‘whims’ budget but he sold an extra yacht to make room. “geeze bats i get that it’s a safehouse but couldn’t you have stocked the pantry with something besides kix and peanut butter?” flash asks. “they’re shelf stable,” batman says, as if that is why he bought those things, as if this is not just What He Does when alfred leaves him unsupervised.
