When George Harrison And Olivia Arias Married In 1978, George Hired The Mariachi Group, Sol De México,

When George Harrison and Olivia Arias married in 1978, George hired the mariachi group, Sol de México, to perform at their private ceremony. Later in 1998 he hired them again to translate and arrange Dark Sweet Lady into a Spanish version for Olivia. He asked them to perform it 5 times at a party he arranged while they were visiting family and friends in Los Angeles (shown in these photos), and there is a tape of this version in the Harrison vaults.

“He invited us to London […] We played at their wedding in 1976 (sic), they have always been in contact with us and when George died, he gave my foundation $30,000 to teach mariachi classes in Los Angeles. Olivia, invited us to make a presentation for the George Harrison Foundation together with the London Symphony; as well as a tour of Russia, with four concerts with Fernando de la Mora,” -  José Hernández, creator of Sol de México

The following article describes a separate occasion from the one above:

Beatle Without Borders (09 December 2001)

by Ruben Martinez

It was a warm fall evening in 1997 and on the patio of the Wilshire Ebell Theatre, mariachi trumpets were blasting. The occasion was a family reunion, and it was in all ways a typical Mexican fiesta–except for the presence of a handful of guests who stood out among the Old World elders and Mexican American kids. Huddled together at a table were George Harrison and some of his friends, including Indian sitar legend Ravi Shankar, Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne of Electric Light Orchestra and session drummer extraordinaire Jim Keltner.

But the rock ‘n’ roll royalty was not the center of attention that evening. Harrison’s in-laws, Maria Louise and Esiquiel Arias, as matriarch and patriarch, had the spotlight. Harrison was there because of their daughter, Olivia Arias, whom he’d married in 1978, thereby gaining a huge Mexican American extended family in Los Angeles.

The former Beatle has been eulogized since his death last month for his cross-cultural collaborations, for popularizing the sitar in Western pop, for serving as a bridge between East and West. But perhaps his most fundamental cross-cultural endeavor was in his personal life.

Remembering The Lovely LINDA McCARTNEY Who Passed Away On This Date, April 17, 1998.
Remembering The Lovely LINDA McCARTNEY Who Passed Away On This Date, April 17, 1998.

Remembering the lovely LINDA McCARTNEY who passed away on this date, April 17, 1998.

“ Linda means beautiful in Spanish, and my Linda was certainly that — inside and out. — Anyone who met her, however briefly, was touched by her genuine interest and gentle kindness. I never stop thinking of her as my girlfriend, even though she became my wife, my children's mother, and my Lady. — The beauty of her spirit never failed to communicate itself to those she encountered, whether they were young or old, male or female, or whatever, they were worthy of respect and so she treated them exactly the same and they invariably felt very comfortable being with her. — Our love of animals was something we discovered, we shared as time went by, and they too enjoyed the same deep respect given to them by her. Her vision of the world was, and is, a simple one. Love, kindness, respect and thoughtfulness for one another and for our fellow species and a deep distrust of people who neglect these values. I am blessed to have shared thirty loving years with this uniquely special woman, a fact which I will remain eternally grateful for. “

— Paul McCartney, Club Sandwich - 1998.

My favourite part of the Venus and Mars re-release email is how the little graphics perfectly represent Paul’s attempts to reconnect with John in the mid-70s

Our Boys.

Our boys.

Sgt Pepper era.

Our Boys.

Just a little discreet physical contact between John & Paul. From shoulders to knees.

No change there then.

i think one of the most interesting things about the "frankly, i miss paris" quote is the fact of its existence. how did may know that was a significant enough thing to remember and to put in her book? was there something in paul's face? in john's voice? a charged silence, a charged look, an awkward cough, a hurried topic shift?

we know john wasn't talking to may about paul. he declines to discuss him after they see the mccartneys for the first time, and it's also clear that her characterization of paul is heavily informed by public john not private john. so what did you notice, may pang? what did you witness?

Paul McCartney covering Twenty Flight Rock in One Hand Clapping (filmed in 1974)

“I went round to see [The Quarrymen] afterwards in the church hall place. I talked to them, just chatting and showing off. I showed them how to play ‘Twenty Flight Rock’ and told them all the words. They didn’t know it. Then I did ‘Bee Bop a L[ula],’ which they didn’t know properly either. Then I did my Little Richard bit, went through me whole repertoire in fact. I remember this beery old man getting nearer and breathing down me neck as I was playing. ‘What’s this old drunk doing?’ I thought. Then he said ‘Twenty Flight Rock’ was one of his favourites. So I knew he was a connoisseur."

+

“I was pissed that day,” says John. “So I probably wasn’t all that clued up. I was very impressed by Paul playing “Twenty Flight Rock.’ He could obviously play the guitar. I half thought to myself ‘He’s as good as me.’ I’d been kingpin up to then. Now, | thought, ‘If I take him on, what will happen?’ It went through my head that I'd have to keep him in line if I let him join. But he was good, so he was worth having. He also looked Elvis. I dug him."

I love watching people living their domestic life and seeing how that goes. I always thought Jane and Paul were very tense. I do remember very clearly an evening at Cavendish Avenue where she wanted the window shut and he wanted the window open. That really was like a Joe Orton play. It was fucking great. I sat there all night watching Jane get up and open it, and Paul close it, and it was just like, nothing was said. And quite soon after that they split up, which of course I could have told anyone they would.

Visits to Paul and Jane Asher weren't quite as relaxed as those Mick and I spent with George and Pattie. With hindsight I can see that they were rather uptight. There were constant little frictions. Mick and I were very close and we would never have done anything like fret about windows being open or closed, or anything as petty as that, but this is what happens when couples start to come apart.
