I wanted to start a little art series of the ZR characters as Greek gods/goddesses and heroes. To start it off, I drew Janine as Athena (goddess of wisdom and war/strategy).
To explain why I’m doing this, I will give a replay of the moment the idea came to me:
Me: Janine is such a goddess.
Some deep crevice of my mind: “’’’’’Janine is goddess.”’’’’’
Daniel Powell season 2 design??
I made something!!!!
Everyone has amazing designs for their Runner Fives, so I thought I’d throw my hat in the ring with mine! Goodness gracious I haven’t drawn in a long time :,)
Some fun facts about my Five:
- Like my url (and like myself) my Five is from the midwestern US. She is singlehandedly responsible for the word “ope” infiltrating Sam’s vocabulary.
- She is so!! restless!! all the time!!! As soon as those gates are open she has a tendency to fly off like a shot. Jack and Eugene curated a playlist for her that’s mostly comprised of bass-boosted EDM music to help her even out. She uses the beat to pace herself so she doesn’t burn out too fast.
- Because she is touted as a hero, she has a hard time letting loose and feeling human. She prefers to be the strong and silent machine of a woman whose only purpose is to help Abel township. She and Sam have been working on opening up and being more in touch with her emotions. (This is the basis for 90% of my angsty 5am feelings)
- When not running, her favorite activity is helping with the animal friends in Abel Township. Her favorite activity is teaching the youngsters how to care for them.
It’s been forever since I actually completed any artwork, so this was very nice. I’m back to the bike and back to my missions starting tomorrow!

[ID: the images are studies of frames from “Howl’s Moving Castle” but featuring Jon (as howl) and Martin (as Sophie) from The Magnus archives. In the first image, they are on a fragment of a wooden floor suspended in a rocky gorge. Jon is laying down, looking up at Martin, who is next to him and looking down at him, smiling. Martin has light brown skin, white curly hair, stubble, and large round glasses. he is wearing a blue button up and an apron. Jon has dark brown skin, long greying hair, a short beard, rectangular glasses and various scars. he is wearing a white tunic. his face looks confused and harried, and appears to be speaking. the text at the bottom says “I feel terrible, like I’m trapped under a stone”. the second image is of Martin looking down at Jon, smiling fondly while speaking. The background is a slightly cloudy bright sky. He is saying “Oh, yes, a heart’s a heavy burden” end id]
An early apocalypse doodle of Five, before she made her way to Abel. Supplies were already running low… it’s either Spaghettios or ravioli, or maybe some SPAM. If she’s lucky.

season 1 -> season 4 comparisons
“When we came to make Zombies, Run!, I deliberately put a line in the very first mission, when you, Runner Five, are just arriving at Abel Township, the tiny, shivering remnant of humanity left after the zombie apocalypse. I had one of the characters say: “If you can move above a slow shamble, we can use you.” Why? Because I am so sick and tired of the best and nicest exercise-based treats being reserved for people who are already in peak physical shape, and I’m sick of the notion that having fun while exercising is something you have to earn; that, until you look a certain way, moving ought to be boring and unpleasant if not outright painful. Your body is there right now. You did not have to earn a thing. It is a gift. You are a hero every time you step out of your front door to do some exercise.”

There’s No Morality in Exercise: I’m a Fat Person Who Made a Successful Fitness App — Matter — Medium (via brutereason)
This is one of the reasons I love Zombies Run! so much. I can’t run. Even if I want to, I physically can’t. Some days I barely move above a shamble. Some days I can’t walk without debilitating pain at all. I can be Runner 5 on the good days. I get a workout, and I’m not worried about losing X number of calories or fitting a size Y dress.
It’s freeing. And it’s wonderful to know someone who isn’t in physical peak condition can be a hero.

Forgot to mention I’m very invested in this app, so here’s my Five ✌🏻
