#how is it that making shimei a girl somehow made the story gayer? lol I love this tag because that's so true. I think making Shimei a girl makes it clearly romantic in the show and then he picks a guy over the girl so I feel like it's gayer than if they had kept Shimei a guy (and tried to show that relationship as platonic) in the show. I kind of love it but I still don't think this show will ever air.
It’s not just that Moran picks a guy over a girl (canon Moran is possibly bi anyway, or at least bisexual and gay-romantic or w/e, if we want to assign modern Western sexual orientation to a fictional Chinese period fantasy character, which I always feel a bit weird about).
It’s that NOW an evil, world-destroying woman tries to come between the pure love of two men - she literally has to enchant one (Moran) into thinking he loves her because otherwise there is no way he’d pay attention to her instead of the man he truly loves; and then she is obsessed with the other who would literally rather bang a sentient corpse of the evil alternate universe version of his male lover than be with her.

There is obviously no way anything even close to the novel would be approved by the censors. Frankly, even if they made Moran or Chu Wanning a woman and thus the main ship was het, the story would STILL be a compilation of everything the censorship office hates. (I once made a post about it but I am too lazy to dig it out.)
I assume since the makers are working within that system and are familiar with it, they presumably know how much they can push and how much they have to alter - I am not surprised that the first cut got rejected by the censors but I assume it will eventually get released.
I almost wonder if all these leaks with various body contact scenes and TXJ dragging CWN off or the blood hourglass or whatever, are leaks on purpose because they know they will have to shred the story to bits and that way they get fandom goodwill by going “see we tried really hard, you saw the leaks, don’t hate us!”
Honestly, I have NO expectations for the drama, not really. I hope it gets released in some form, though I will settle for the trailer, because their casting is on insane point (if I was making my ideal cast, I would pick Chen Feiyu and Luo Yunxi myself) and I want to have some visuals in my head for rereads.

During a drunken game at a work dinner, Adachi and Kurosawa are asked to kiss.
Adachi braces himself. He’s uncomfortable with the whole thing and it shows clearly on his face. Kurosawa, who’s leaning over to plant the kiss and get it over with, notices his distress. So, instead of kissing him on the lips, he drops a quick peck on his forehead.
Adachi - who can hear thoughts through touch - is startled at Kurosawa’s thoughts. He’s sorry. He didn’t want to force a kiss on Adachi like this. Since Adachi already knows Kurosawa’s feelings for him, he follows the man out to check on him. This time when Adachi’s fingers accidentally touch Kurosawa, Adachi is the one to notice the other man’s internal distress.
Kurosawa is wrestling with himself. He had already told himself that Adachi would never reciprocate his feelings. So even though a small part of him was happy to get close to Adachi, most of him was crushed at the thought that Adachi must have hated the kiss.
The reason this scene is so great is because of what happens next. Kurosawa is the confident, outgoing colleague Adachi has always been in awe of. Adachi is introverted and doesn’t express himself too well. But because Adachi has heard Kurosawa’s most intimate feelings, he feels the unfairness of knowing too much. He understands that there’s an imbalance and feels compelled to correct it.
You can almost feel the crushing pressure on his narrow shoulders as he pushes himself to explain to Kurosawa why he looked distressed. It wasn’t because of Kurosawa, it was because he was inexperienced and afraid. He didn’t hate the kiss.
It wasn’t a confession, just a deep desire not to hurt the man who’s been exceptionally kind to him and somehow also seems to really like and respect him. But saying just that much would have been beyond Adachi, if he didn’t suddenly develop mind reading powers which made it impossible for him to ignore Kurosawa’s feelings.
The guy who would usually keep to himself, second guess anything he did notice about others, and live by a motto of inaction was pushed to speak out because he couldn’t pretend he didn’t know Kurosawa was hurting.
Of course a scene like this could be written without magic realism, but for a character as insular and hesitant as Adachi, you’d need magic to make this happen.

SVSSS is my favorite novel so far, I know it's very simple unlike the other MXTX novels, but I really like the story a lot, personally I'm in love with this danmei.
