Before I get started, a quick preface:

This may not be your experience, but your experience is not universal.
With that out of the way, let’s get started. This is going to be a very long post, so let me just give you the abstract:
Any artist who takes commissions has an obligation to behave in a professional manner and treat their customers’ time and money with respect. Just because art is a creative endeavor that does not excuse abusive business practices, and it’s wrong to take advantage of a customers’ good will. Doing so weakens trust in artists as a whole and harms the entire artistic community, especially new artists just getting started.
