Chapter 2. Night Crawling

Back to Masterlist

Hana didn’t think a link to her past would come up so quickly. Now, she’ll have to address her past with her potential boss in order to help solve the case. I mean how exactly do you tell your ‘not quite’ boss you used be an assassin? Chapter Title: Night Crawling by Miley Cyrus ft Billy Idol

Hotcher's was busy reading through his files for the other interview candidates, when Hana Fedorov swung open the door and marched into the room.

"Agent Fedorov we finished your interview already, I also don't appreciate you barging into my office" Hotchner chastised as he looked up.

"Giuseppe Montolo"

"Excuse me?"

"Your unsub is Giuseppe Montolo" Hana stated plainly.

"What do you mean?"

"He's been betrayed before." Hana explained before continuing, "What your unsub is doing is exactly what he did to the last contract that tried to double cross him"

At this point had Hana had taken the same seat in front Hotchner she had during the interview. "Montolo's also the only one who'd know anything about a fucking pullycella, or whatever that dude called it."

"He told you?"

"We know each other," She finally admitted, "Suppose you could call us ex colleagues."

At this point, it was clear that she had Hotchner's full attention, he'd closed the file he was looking through and his eyes were solely focused on her. "This wasn't in your file Fedorov."

"It wouldn't be, I was a minor the record was sealed."

"And what would that record say?" He leant forward, and Hana realised this conversation had shifted; she was being interrogated. She figured it'd be easier for to tell the truth by this point.

"The Black Lion." She answered immediately.

"I presume this is what was happening in Russia?"

Hana nodded.

"My father is Grisha Fedorov."

Hotchner couldn't control his expression at that, his eyebrows shifted slightly up in surprise. Which was to be predicted, Hana had just told him she was raised by a man on the FBI's most wanted list.

"Follow me." His voice left no room for argument.

So, she followed the imposing man into the bullpen where the other team members were waiting, Morgan and Reid were on speaker phone as they had just finished saving another potential victim. Hana caught the tail ends that it involved a grenade. Montolo was getting frustrated.

After the two had entered, Hotchner pulled out his phone before dialing and placing it on speaker. "Garcia you're on speaker."

"What can my magical hands do you for you?" A feminine voice replied unperturbed by her superior's formal tone.

"What can you find on a Giuseppe Montolo?"

"I was just about to call" The voice replied, as she began to explain her own research. "Ok, so, a week ago, this guys stumbles into the Atlantic City E.R., having been shot in the jaw. Can't give them his name 'cause of the whole shot in the mouth thing."

"But his fingerprints lit up the Rome police database like a Christmas tree."

"Italian. That explains the pulcinella influence." Dr Reid chimed in from over the phone, followed by Morgan.

"Yeah. They were able to get a name Giuseppe Montolo, which by the way weird you already knew, but anyway by the time Jersey P.D. got there, Montolo had been patched up and made his escape."

"And now he's on some type of payback gig."

"He has no idea who double-crossed him, so now he's killing every customer that he suspects might have done it."

"I tried to use Al's username and password to flush out other clients, but they don't call it the Darknet for nothing."

"Might not work anyway, most clients were instructed to use internet cafes or other public computers" Hana stated simply causing those in the room to turn towards her. "Can't link the IPs to an individual."

"Who was that?!" Garcia exclaimed from the phone, curious if this who had been chosen for the team.

"Garcia." Hotchner chastised.

"Right sorry, not the time." Hana could hear the faint sounds of Garcia typing away on her keyboard.

"We'll have to catch him another way, Morgan Reid you guys keep on the scene see if he's made a mistake. Garcia, keep searching we need everything you can find on him and any potential victims." With that Hotchner ended both calls before turning to Hana.

"This isn't his MO, I've never seen Montolo do anything like this before. He's getting desperate."

"Then we need to make sure we find him."

Hotchner then quickly left the room most likely to give orders to all the bodies still working hard in the bullpen, leaving Hana standing in the conference with the other agents.

"Must say kid, you're quite young for someone who knows how to hire a hitman." The older man, Rossi stated to Hana.

"Let's just say past experience?" She replied with a slight inflection to indicate her sarcasm.

"And the reason you know our unsub." Agent Morgan queried with his arms on his hips.

"Family acquaintance."

At the agents look at her in amusement, and suspicion. Unfortunately, it was clear to Hana that her secret was not going to be possible to keep. At least not with this team. Sighing she leant against one of the chairs around the circular table before continuing.

"I'll explain to the whole team once we catch Montolo."

"I think that's a good idea kid." Rossi stated before making his way out the door, "Now let's catch this son of a bitch."

"I like how you talk Agent Rossi." Hana replied as she followed him out.

He smiled at her, "You can just call me Rossi."

"Just Rossi, got it."

The bullpen was still a flurry of movement she notice a lot of the interviewees were dotted around on phones likely speaking to all the local law enforcements possible. She noticed Hotchner speaking to small group of officers, and began to approach him.

"Sir?" He broke from the group and turned towards her, "Where do you want me to be?"

"At the moment, I want you to wait." Hotch began, "You have history with Montolo which while useful could still be a conflict of interest."

"I understand sir." Hana nodded.

"But..." He continued, "When we catch him and he’s secured in prison I may request you visit him for an interview."

"Really?! Why me?"

"You might catch him off guard." He stated before turning away and continuing to speak to the group of people from before.

So, Hana waited in the BAU for the next couple of hours and watched as the case was solved. Even Tara got involved by pretending to be someone's wife, which impressed Hana. Being a able to analyse someone's speech and copy their inflections was definitely something that she was interested learning, maybe she should ask Tara about it.

Eventually though the bullpen got the confirmation, Montolo was now in custody. In hospital, but still they’d got him. Hana could breathe a sigh of relief that at least one of them was going behind bars. She stood from the seat she’s taken and once more approached the Unit chief.

“I wanna thank you sir for listening to me, I’m glad you guys got him.” She smiled brightly at him.

“And I appreciate your input,” he replied before continuing. “Rossi also told me you plan to tell the whole team about your history but that’s not required of you.”

“I know but I realised it would probably be easier to work with people if everything was put in the open,” it was then that Hana realised she hadn’t been offered a job, “I mean if I’m still a candidate.”

“Well I offered the role we were looking to fill to Dr Lewis for her work today,” Hana nodded although still slightly disappointed. “but, I’ve convinced our Director for allow some extra budget for another agent, if that network of hitmen is still active it would be in our best interest to have someone with previous knowledge.”

“Oh my god!” She could help but shout, “I mean thank you so much sir, I make sure to work hard.”

The corner of the unit chief’s mouth raised slightly into a small smile at her burst of excitement. He gestured for the young agent to follow him and led her towards the small conference room.

“First of all I wanna say a good job to the team, the case was difficult but we got the guy and as soon as he cleared by the hospital he’ll be heading straight to a cell.” Hotchner began, “I’d also like to welcome our two newest agents Dr Lewis and Agent Fedorov, who will both be joining the team.”

“But I thought we were only adding one?” Garcia queried.

“That was the initial plan, Dr Lewis is taking the original position,” he then gestured to Hana. “I believe Agent Fedorov has some incite that will prove useful for future potential cases.”

At this the team turned towards Hana, and she took a breath before fulfilling her promise and explaining; everything.

“How many of you know Grisha Fedorov?”

Dr Reid chimed in with mini rant of information. “Grisha Fedorov born in Russia sometime in the mid 1970s, he rose to the most wanted by the FBI in the early 2000s after he was linked to the assassination of a prominent political figure in Bolivia. After that we were able to link him to a total of 78 deaths globally, but there are probably more. Also, no arrest has ever been made as he’s lived completely off the grid since the age of 23.”

For a moment Hana was silent in surprise that someone knew so much about her father.

“Don’t worry he’s like this a lot.” Agent Morgan reassured before allowing her to continue.

“Right okay,” she nodded before explained further. “He’s my father, adoptive clearly I mean I doubt a full blood Russian could ever produce a fully Korean kid. But anyway, he found me when I was 5 years old and took me under his wing, he also trained me.”

“Trained you in what exactly?” Rossi asked in suspicion.

“How to kill.” She stated plainly, “From the ages of 13 to 17 I was an active assassin for hire, my young aged allowed me to avoid suspicion. I was the best, they called me The Black Lion which is cheesy but it sounded cooler in Russian.”

She was attempting to add little jokes in her explanation to relieve the intense amount of anxiety building inside of her. If her dad had left her with anything it was the incessant need to be liked by the people close to her.

“Eventually, I was caught by Interpol. They gave me choice I could surrender and give them any information they thought useful to catch my father, or I’m charged as an adult in Russia. I obviously took the deal and they let me move to the US where I was placed with a foster family given a social security number and then the rest is history.”

“Hell of a life kiddo” Rossi stated before standing from his seat, “We’ve all got past here but it doesn’t effect out work and neither will yours”

“I have a question?” It was Dr Reid again who, to Hana’s amusement, had actually raised his hand. “If you have the full information for Grisha why was he never caught.”

“Oh he left Russia as soon he saw I got caught, no idea where is now.” She stated apathetically. “I may consider him my father but I was just a protégée to him, I’m sure he’s already found another to manipulate.”

“What do you know about the Dirty Dozen?” Morgan asked.

“It rings a bell, but all I know it was someone or a group of people that not many of the Hitmen I was acquainted with like all that much, pretty sure the Dirty Dozen is on their personal kill list.”

“Well hopefully with you on team might make things easier.”

“I hope so, I’ll help as much as I can.”

After this Hotchner stepped forward and addressed the room, “Now that’s all cleared and out in the open, I want you all to head home and relax, I’ll see you all tomorrow.”

At this everyone gathered all their things together, and made their way into the elevator and heading down to the car park. Here everyone said their goodnights before going their separate ways and each to their own vehicle, except Garcia who Hana noticed joined Morgan in his car.

She approached her car and took a moment in the driver’s seat to think. She had no idea what was going to happen next, and she couldn’t wait to find out.

Chapter 4. Oh My God

Back to Masterlist

Hana first case goes surprisingly smooth, and the Doctor is great company Chapter Title: Oh My God by (G)-Idle

When they finally landed Hana was almost reluctant to leave the comfort of the Jet’s soft chairs, in truth while she had travelled a lot in her early life, she’d never had the full opportunity to fly in a private check. As she stepped onto the tarmac she breathed in a large breath of fresh air and made her way to the SUVs waiting for them

“How do you ever get off that Jet and away from that couch beats me.” She’d chimed to Reid as he help her lift the duffle bag she brought into the trunk of on of the SUVs. The young laughed in response before replying.

“The needs of the many outweighs the needs of the few.”

“Oh don’t get philosophical on me Doctor.” She drawled, before hoping into the right back seat, where she greeted Rossi who’d taken his spot in the driver’s seat. “Buongiorno Agent Rossi, where we headed?”

“We, Bambino are going to the attack site,” He explained fondly to her, “we need to see exactly how the Sarin got on it in the first place. And just it’s just Rossi no need to be so formal rookie.”

“Ooo how exciting first case and I get to go to my first crime scene.” She spoke as the buckled herself in a getting comfortable. At the same time, Reid entered into the passenger seat.

“You know you’re the first person I’ve meet who’s been excited to be at a crime scene.”

“Part of my charm Reid.” She winked at him, as he was turned towards her.

“It does beg the question though, Rookie…” Rossi looked at her through the rear-view mirror, “How are you really feeling today?”

At this questioned Hana was about to answer her reflex ‘I’m fine’, before she realised saying that in a car full of FBI profilers would probably the stupidest thing she could ever do. Instead, she sighed while look down and began to fiddle with the silver ring on her right hand.

“It’s okay to be nervous kid,” Rossi commented, “But I know you’ll do just fine on our team.”

“Yeah I mean it’s been a while since we’ve had someone new and to have to both you and Dr Lewis joining us will be interesting, but in a good way.” Reid added making sure to say the last part incase he was misinterpreted.

Their words of encouragement made Hana feel more comfortable and a small smile grew on her face as she continued to play with her small silver ring. She looked up briefly and made eye contact with Reid through the rear view mirror, who then responded with a bright smile that reached his eyes.

“Hey Doctor, know any cool bus facts that might be useful?” She asked suddenly, happy to spend her time listening to some random facts that she’d probably never need to know. Ignoring Rossi small groan, the Doctor was happy to entertain and inform Hana as they made their way to the location.

Eventually, they pulled up to the crime scene and were greeted with a sight of multiple cop cars and several forensic analysts already collecting evidence. The three stepped out of the SUV and Hana placed her sunglasses on to avoid being blinded by the L.A sun.

One of the local agents approached as they walked towards the bus, “I’m Agent Young” he introduced himself before continuing, “The Hazmat teams says they're almost done with their decontamination.”

“Well, the good news with sarin, if there is such a thing, is that it's a relatively short-lived threat. Once it dissipates, there's very little cleanup to be done.” Reid had stated as Young made his way towards some forensic workers that had gotten his attention.

“If sarin is so fast and deadly, how can someone release it without harming themselves in the process?” Rossi had asked to the two agents.

“Especially in such confined space.” She added turning to the young Doctor who no doubt had the answer.

“Excellent question. The cult members in Tokyo wore surgical masks, and even with them, some of them were still injured. I'm guessing that—“ Rossi was interrupt as Agent Young

“The techs just found this, stuck under a seat in the third row.” The other agent explained before handing something off to Rossi. “It tested positive for sarin residue.”

They crowded round as Hana looked on in confusion at the small circular device Rossi was holding in his hand.

“It looks like some kind of time-release device.” Spencer noticed as his eyes squinted slightly to look at it more carefully.

“Looks homemade.” Rossi chimed in

“It’s battery operated.”

Reid’s eyes suddenly shined with recognition before he began to explain, “You know, it reminds me of an automatic fish food feeder.”

“How would it work?” Young looked to the Doctor for clarification.

“With a fish food feeder, there's a disk inside with multiple slots. Each slot is filled with fish food.” He explained to the group, “As the disk rotates, the food is released at very specific times. My assumption is, with this device, only one slot was filled with sarin, because even in a minuscule amount, sarin is deadly.”

“So someone could have planted that a long time ago.” Rossi added, slowly putting the pieces together.

“How long ago?” Hana asked, already expecting the answer.

“My fish food feeder lasts 6 weeks, so, theoretically…”, he paused before continuing, “The unsub could have left all the slots empty except for the very last one, and then waited 6 weeks for the sarin to be released. We need to look at everyone who got on and off that bus for the last month and a half.”

“Narrow” Hana grumbled to the group.

At the same time, Agent Young sighed slightly, “Great”

After that the small group went their separate ways, with Hana following Reid to the crime scene.

“So you have fish?” She asked as they looked around the bus’ exterior. “What are they called?”

He smiled at her question before answering, “He is called Perseus.”

“Aw cool like the Greek myth?”

“Exactly.”

“Can I meet him?”

“What?” His voice rose an octave with surprise.

“I wanna meet you fish..” she replied more forcefully to make her point, “and I guess us hanging out would be a bonus.”

“You want to hang out?” He asked confused, “with me?”

“Do you know anyone else in the BAU with a fish?” She smirked at him, he smiled back before hesitating and looking down.

“We should head back.” He muttered, sounding colder than he did moments before. Hana recoiled slightly at his sudden change in tone but swiftly followed behind him anyway.

It only took a few days until the case was eventually solved after they were able to stop the unsub before he was able to attack the federal building they were working at. The team were all heading towards the jet when Hana’s phone rang and she stepped aside to answer, and then immediately stepped further away as Reid heard someone speak in a load hurried voice. He watched as she ran her fingers through her hair, worry spread across her face and continued to speak into her phone in gentle tones. It was only a five minute call before Hana hung put her phone back in her pocketed an headed towards the jet where Reid was still waiting.

“Everything okay?” Reid asked as she stopped in front of him.

She shook her head for a moment before speaking, “My friend’s boyfriend just broke up with her, apparently he’d been seeing someone else the whole time.”

“I’m sorry, do you need any help?” He offered as the pair made their way onto the jet.

“Well my plan was to take her out for drinks and clubbing, if that’s your scene you’re welcome to join.”

“I’m not a huge drinker...” He paused, “or clubbing type of person really but I’d be happy to come along.”

Suddenly, Morgan approached the pair with surprise on his face, “Did I just hear our good doctor agree to a night of clubbing?” He then followed up his question by grabbing onto Reid shoulder and shaking him slightly. Meanwhile, Hana giggled softly at Reid embarrassed expression as he swatted the older agent away so he could take his seat.

“You’re welcome to join Morgan, I mean you guys all can if you want?” She questioned to the whole jet.

“You sure, we wouldn’t want to intrude on you and your friends night.” JJ spoke, at which Hana turned to face her.

“Oh no it’s fine, me and Sasha were planning on going out once I got back to celebrate my first case anyway.” She explained, “I think it’s fitting that I invite my new teammates to join us.”

“Sounds good Babushka, let’s say we meet for nine?” Morgan suggested.

“Yeah there’s a nice bar called the Empire, we could go there?” Hana added, to which most of the team agreed all happy for a night to relax. Most surprising was Rossi and Hatch also agreed. She then turned to Reid who had yet to respond. “What do you think Dr Reid?”

He lifted his head from the book he had begun reading as the rest of the team were talking, to look at the newest agent. “Yeah, sounds like fun.” He smiled at her which she returned in kind before taking the seat next to him, to which Reid leaned in and spoke gently. “,and you can call me Spencer when were not on the field.”

“Sounds good, Spencer.” She replied still smiling at him, “You can call me Hana.”

“Okay, Hana.” He nodded before looking back to his book, still smiling gently.

Chapter 4. A Sisterly Agreement

When she reopened her eyes, the first thing she did was immediately close them again, too blinded by the fluorescent lights above her. Mitsuko groaned as she tried to lift her hand to rub her face, quickly becoming confused when she felt resistance.

Slowly opening her eyes, she realised she wasn't at home in her own bed; in fact, she had no idea where she was. Alarmed, she tried to sit up but winced when a burning pain spread from her shoulder through the rest of her body.

Before panic could fully set in, she was able to turn her head and spot her sister sitting at her bedside. Hoshiko was busy looking at something on her phone, so she hadn't yet realised that Mitsuko was awake.

“H-hoshi?” She tried to speak, but she found herself struggling to speak. “What’s... What's going on?”

Hoshiko looked up from her phone at the sound of her sister's voice. Jumping out of her chair, she was quickly by Mitsuko’s side. “Oh my god, you scared us so much.”

“Am I in the hospital?” She asked as she continued looking around rapidly. When looked down, she realised the resistance she felt was from all the tubing connected from her hand to an IV.

Her sister nodded before explaining, “You got attacked by some kind of animal, lost a lot of blood; we thought you were going to die.”

As her sister spoke, a flash of red eyes appeared in Mitsuko's mind, and an overwhelming sense of fear settled in her stomach. “Riley… I saw Riley.”

“What?” Her little sister pulled away from her slightly, looking at her with a confused expression.

“He was there!” She exclaimed as the heart monitor’s beeps began to grow louder and faster slightly.

Hoshiko began to gently stroke her sister’s hair as she whispered in attempts to calm her down, “Hey, it’s okay; if you saw him, I believe you.”

The two sisters were silent for a moment, broken when Mitsuko suddenly turned to Hoshiko with wide eyes as she spoke.

“I think it was him…”

“What do you mean?” Her sister’s brow furrowed with confusion, eyes full of concern for a sister’s well-being.

“I think Riley… attacked me.” She whispered to her sister, afraid that someone would overhear them. Her mind was still going back to that night; Riley looked so different than the last time they’d been together. He seemed colder and more dangerous, two words that Mitsuko never thought she’d use to describe someone she’d known her whole life.

“Suki, what are you talking—“ Before Hoshiko could finish her question, the doors opened, and Dr. Cullen walked into the room flanked by two nurses.

Upon seeing that she was awake, the two nurses began to flutter about the room, checking her chart and adjusting her IV. Carlisle stepped closer to her bed and spoke softly, “Miss Tanaka, it’s good to see you awake. How are you feeling?”

“I feel fine, just a little sore is all.” She said simply, before continuing, “When can I go home?”

“I want to keep you in just for a few more days just for observations; if all goes well, I’ll be happy to discharge you.” He said as he grabbed her chart and began the required checks.

"Your injuries were quite extensive, but I'm happy with how quickly you've been able to recover," he spoke as he carefully shined a small torch in her face, directing her to follow it with her eyes, "and although I did have some concerns about internal bleeding, it seems you got out relatively unscathed, other than the rather nasty wound on your neck."

As he pointed it out, Mitsuko couldn't help but look down as she realised her neck to her shoulder was thickly bandaged, further limiting her movement.

Carlise continued the checks silently, only speaking every now and then to check her pain levels. Mitsuko wasn't in much pain; she was just overcome with a sense of confusion and fear about what had happened that night.

When he checked her right ankle, she let out a sharp hiss as he adjusted it slightly. "Looks like just a sprain," the doctor explained. "Must have happened when you fell; you're lucky that it's not broken."

"Don't exactly feel lucky…" she pessimistically murmured, earning a small slap on the arm from Hosiko, who was still sitting close to her side. "Sorry, I'm just tired.

Dr. Cullen took her attitude in stride, "It's normal to feel this way, especially after a traumatic experience."

Next the nurse carefully lifted her into a sitting position so that Carlise could listen to her heart. As he placed the stethoscope against her, she couldn't help but shiver. Amusingly, she thought his hands felt colder than the metal.

Once Carlise seemed happy with his assessment, he looked at her softly before speaking, “All your friends have been quite worried about you. I imagine you’ll have a lot of visitors these next coming days.”

“Oh gosh,” she exclaimed as she realised where the incident happened, “I ruined the graduation party.”

At her words, Hoshiko jumped forward to grab her face, forcing Mitsuko to look at her. “You didn’t ruin anything; whatever attacked you did.”

“Speaking of which,” the doctor spoke again, causing the two sisters to look at him again, “the police are here to ask a few questions, but only if you’re comfortable, of course.”

“It’s okay…” she replied with a small smile, “You can let them in.”

With that, Carlisle walked out of the room for a few minutes, only to come back followed by Charlie and another partner.

“How you doing, kid?” He asked once he approached her bed, “I know your mom’s been beside herself worrying about ya.”

“Where is she?”

“At work, said she needed to, so she was distracted.” Charlie explained as he looked at her sympathetically. When all she did was nod in understanding, he cleared his throat slightly before speaking, “Do you think you could tell us exactly what happened?”

“I was at the party; erm, I was feeling a bit lightheaded, so I went outside,” she began to explain. “And I don’t know why, but I found myself walking into the woods.”

“Why?” He asked, his face furrowed with clear confusion.

“I don’t know, just like a… feeling, I guess.” She responded before continuing, “Anyway, I ended up in a clearing and…”

Mitsuko paused; as much as she trusted Charlie, she also knew how crazy she would sound. If she told them about Riley, they’d just put it down as a hallucination from grief or something, and the next thing she knows, she’s in the psych ward.

So, she took a breath and lied, “It’s all hazy from there… sorry.”

Charlie nodded in understanding, but next to him, Carlisle had a strange expression on his face. As if he knew there was more to her story, but before she could question it, he was already leading Charlie and his partner out.

"What the hell was that?" A voice broke Mitsuko from her thoughts, and she turned to face her sister. "Why didn't you tell them what you told me?”

"'Cause I know how crazy it sounds." She replied in a hushed whisper, "If I'm going to find out what happened, I think I need to do it alone."

Hoshiko almost laughed at her older sister's sheer audacity, "Absolutely not; if he tried to kill you, there's no way I'm letting you do this alone."

Shaking her head rapidly, she quickly rejected her sister's offer, "No, I'm not letting you put yourself in harm's way."

"You either let me come with you, or I go out those doors and tell everyone what you told me."

As much as she wanted to call out Hoshi's bluff, she knew her sister. If summer camp ten years ago had taught her anything, it's that Hoshi will do anything that she says she will. So with a heavy sigh of resignation, she nodded her head, "Fine, but if anything goes wrong, I told you so.”

Hoshiko nodded in understanding, "So when do we start?"

"Seattle, I think, but not till I get out of here," she said simply. "For now, you have to promise me something..."

"What?"

"Don't do any investigations without me, okay?"

Hoshiko simply rolled her eyes, so she repeated herself, "I'm serious, Hoshi, don't put yourself in danger for me; this could be some massive crime gang or something."

With a small groan she agreed, "Fine, I'll be careful, promise."

"Thank you," she said gratefully. "Now get out of here; you can't stay here all day; besides, you have school tomorrow.”

Before she shooed her sister out of the room, Mitsuko made sure to pull her into a tight hug. Closing her eyes, she savoured the feeling of having her little sister cradled in her arms.

As they pulled away, they looked at each other one more time before Hoshiko finally pulled away, "I'll see you later, oneesan."

"See you later." With that, her sister left the room, leaving Mitsuko in silence.

Left alone with her thoughts, all she could do was think back to that night again. She knew Riley was there; that was a fact she knew. Yet, as she thought more about that night, she still had no idea what made her walk into that clearing in the first place. It was as if her subconscious knew Riely would be there and guided her to him, but why?

"Stop thinking so hard." She whispered to herself in comfort, "Just go to sleep; everything will be fine."

Pulling the covers up, she shuffled further under them and closed her eyes, letting sleep take over her as her mind still raced.

Elsewhere, a young girl with black hair approached the service desk. The woman at the desk acknowledged the girl carefully before asking, "Where'd you need to go, darling?"

The girl paused before finally answering, "Seattle. I need to go to Seattle."

Hoshiko knew she'd be breaking her promise, but if Riley was who Mitsuko saw in the woods, then she needed to find him and quickly. It was only right to start in the city where he vanished.

Hopefully, there she'd find some answers.

Masquerade | Lyutsifer Safin X Fem!Reader (Smut)

Masterlist | Part 2 to "Cherry" 6 months after the events in vegas, Y/N has a unexpected reunion with the mysterious figure who had both saved and endangered her life. (WC: 3484)

Warnings: smut, vaginal fingering, slight praise kink, AFAB! reader.

----------------------------------------------------

After the incident in Vegas, Y/N had been put on leave for four months. M had told her it wasn’t a punishment but to give her time to recuperate from the effects of the drugs. It had been the longest four months of her life.

Even after her leave ended, she was then given exclusively domestic assignments. Hence why Y/N currently finds herself in the middle of a ballroom wearing a rabbit-shaped mask and an elegant glittering white dress.

She’d been assigned as one of the bodyguards for a foreign princess, attending an exclusive masquerade ball. Thankfully, because the princess was young, she left before nine, and Y/N was permitted to stay and enjoy the ball as an attendee.

“It’s a pleasant surprise to see you again, 'Cherry,” a familiar voice whispered closely in her ear, causing Y/N to turn her and gaze into the piercing blue eyes hidden behind a black wolf mask.

“How did you get in here?” She asked her voice a whisper so as not to gain too much attention.

“I was invited.” Safin had answered, smirking. “I must say I prefer this to what you were wearing the last we met.”

She couldn’t help the blush that rose to her cheeks as he spoke. The silence she experienced during her four-month leave allowed her time to think. As she tried to think back to that night and her next plan of action, she always found herself thinking of him.

“Why are you speaking to me?” Y/N whispered harshly, still staring into his eyes.

"Does a man need a reason to talk to a beautiful woman?" He asked, his voice still low, seductive. Y/N shivered as she felt his eyes on her, moving them downwards as he admired the exposed skin of her chest.

“A man like you does.” She answered, looking away to watch the couples dance in hopes of distracting herself.

"And what kind of man do you think I am, Miss Y/L/N?" Safin took a step closer, closing the distance between them. He lifted his hand, placing it on her waist, pulling her slightly closer to him.

Y/N couldn’t help but gasp at the sudden contact, “A man who definitely has ulterior motives.”

"And what ulterior motives would that be?" He leaned in even closer, his lips nearly brushing against her ear.

She subconsciously leaned backwards into him for a moment before quickly pulling away from him. “I want no part in your plans.”

With that, she shook herself and grabbed the first man she saw to pull her onto the dance floor to get away from him. It was not until the stranger put her hands on her waist roughly did she come to regret the decision. He was a tall blonde, but the smug smirk on his masked face showed her he was an egotistical rich kid.

"Well, you sure are forward." He drawled out as they began to waltz.

“Believe me, this isn’t what I intended to do tonight.”

“Don’t worry,” he spun her, suddenly making her head spin. “I have that effect on women.”

God Y/N just wanted this to end. Instead, the song still had a few minutes left, so she sighed and resigned herself to being stuck with this unfortunate dance partner. The man tried to make conversation, but it was all hallow bragging about how rich he was, or more accurately, his parents.

As the music neared its end, Y/N stiffened as she spotted Safin approaching from behind the blonde and tapping him on the shoulder, interrupting the dance.

“May I cut in?” His voice was cold; it came out as a command rather than a question.

The blonde was about to protest, but a sharp look from Safin made him lose his nerves, and he stepped away. Allowing for Safin to place his arm around Y/N’s waist and pull her close as the next song began.

As they began to dance, Y/N was silent for a moment before she looked up at him and asked, “Aren’t you worried about drawing attention to yourself?”

"I've dealt with unwanted attention before." He replied, his voice low. "And I assure you, no one in this room will dare question me."

He took a step forward, moving her closer to him, their bodies nearly pressed against each other. He could feel the heat radiating off of her, the subtle scent of her perfume filling his senses.

"Oh, I’m aware of your power, Lyutsifer Safin.” Y/N spoke, revealing her knowledge of his identity. After the incident those months ago, she’d secretly researched heavily into the mysterious man who’d broken her cover so easily yet had let her go.

"You have done your research, it seems." He chuckled, amused.

As they continued to dance, Lyutsifer’s grip on her waist tightened, pulling her even closer to him, their bodies now almost flush. He looked down at her, a hint of condescension in his eyes.

"And what do you make of me, Miss Y/L/N?"

She hesitated for a moment before she answered, “To be frank, not much; over these last few years you’ve been a ghost, just a whisper. But one name stands out next to yours. Spectre.”

Lyutsifer’s face hardened at the mention of Spectre, a flicker of anger and pain crossing his features. His hand on her waist tightened to the point of being painful. He could feel the pulse of anger thrumming just beneath the surface.

"You know about Spectre?" He asked, his voice dangerously low.

She scoffed lowly, “Of course I know about Spectre; I helped bring most of the lower circle in.”

"You helped bring them in?" He repeated, his voice laced with interest. "You were a part of that operation?

“Well, I won’t take full credit." Y/N replied modestly, “Double O Seven did the most work.”

He took a step forward, pulling her closer, their bodies almost touching now. He leaned in, his breath teasing her ear. "How did you end up involved with them anyway?"

Y/N inhaled sharply at his breath before answering calmly, “I was an orphan; MI6 recruited me because I had nothing to lose and nobody to miss me.”

His grip on her waist relaxed slightly, but he didn't pull away. Instead, he looked at her closely, studying her face, trying to gauge her expression.

"I've made my peace with it," she replied truthfully, looking intently at his face with an expression of acceptance.

He gently tilted her chin up with his other hand, holding her gaze.

"You've made peace with a lonely existence, yet here you stood tonight wearing a beautiful dress, dancing the night away." He mused, his voice low and contemplative.

She wasn’t sure what to say in response to his words; instead, she remained silent and focused on the music. Lyutisfer watched her carefully, keeping his hand on her waist as he guided her around the dance floor.

They danced in silence for a while, only broken at her question. Her voice was almost a whisper and showed her vulnerability. “I don’t understand, why me?”

Lyutsifer looked down at her, his eyes holding hers in a steely gaze. He held her close, his grip tight, almost possessive.

"Why you, Miss Y/L/N?" He murmured.

“Just tell me." Her voice was strained, tense from the tension she was feeling between the two of them.

Lyutsifer leaned closer and whispered in her ear, “Perhaps this should be taken somewhere more private?”

She knew deep down that going anywhere private with him was dangerous; it was asking for trouble. His suggestion was both thrilling and terrifying, and she knew it was too late to protest. She found herself hesitantly nodding.

He smiled, pleased with her agreement, no matter how hesitant she was. As the music approached its close, Lyutsifer took her hand and quickly led her from the dance floor and out of the ballroom. The hallways were completely empty save for a few guards, but they ignored the pair as Lyutsifer escorted her far away from the ball and into an empty parlour room.

As they stepped inside, the air grew thick with the sudden tension of being alone. Y/N realised that anything could happen here and no one would ever know. She heard the door click as Lyutsifer closed it behind them. He approached her, keeping his eyes focused on hers as he reached out to graze his fingers on the side of her neck.

A shiver spread through her body, and her gasp filled the silent air. “This is too dangerous.”

He stepped closer and pushed her backwards into the wall. “Then why did you come with me so readily?”

“I’m not sure.”

Lyutsifer chuckled, a low, seductive sound that sent a shiver through her body. He had her trapped against the wall, his body pressed against hers, the heat between them intensifying.

He leaned in, his breath hot against her ear. "You could have left; you could have called for help." His lips brushed her neck, and his voice whispered with seduction. "But you didn't, did you?"

“I should have." It was harder for her to say, “I think there’s something wrong with me.”

"No, darling, there's nothing wrong with you," he murmured, his fingers tracing a line down her neck, caressing the sensitive skin. He leaned in closer, his lips brushing her collarbone, planting a soft, lingering kiss there.

Her back arched as he kissed her collarbone, letting out a small moan in pleasure. Unable to stop herself, she gripped the back of his neck to pull him closer. He continued to trail kisses down her collarbone and neck until he suddenly pulled away. They looked each other in the eye with an unreadable expression before Lyutsifer grabbed her cheeks and pulled her into a heated kiss.

She closed her eyes as she responded to the kiss eagerly. As His scarred lips pushed against hers, desire continued to pool in Y/N’s stomach. Lyutsifer pushed forward, placing his left leg in between her own; in response, Y/N began to gently grind herself on his thigh.

Lyutsifer responded with matching desire, deepening the kiss and gripping her cheeks with a firm, possessive grip. His left hand slipped to her hip, holding her tightly against him.

With a hand against his chest, Y/N pushed against his chest and reached up to hold the mask covering his face. “May I?”

Lyutsifer pulled back slightly, a hint of surprise in his eyes at her question. He looked at her, his gaze intense and unreadable.

"You want to see my face." He stated it as a fact, his voice almost nonchalant. "Why?" His grip on her cheek tightened slightly.

“It’s too impersonal to kiss you behind a mask,” she replied, forgetting she was still wearing a mask of her own. “Besides, I have seen it before.”

He studied her, his expression contemplative, before his fingers moved to her own mask, pulling it off and stroking his hand against her cheek.

"You're right. Too impersonal." He admitted, his voice quieter. "But are you sure you want to see it? It's not exactly pretty."

“But it’s your face; I want to see it.” She replied, already reaching underneath it to pull it up and off his face.

As his mask was removed, Lyutisfer watched her eyes widen as she took in the sight of his face. He knew it was a shock—the scars, the disfigurement—but he didn't look away, holding her gaze in an unflinching stare.

"You're not, repulsed?"

“It’s like lightning, beautiful.”

"Beautiful," he echoed, the word a whisper. "You see beauty in this disfigurement?"

She smiled slightly at him, far more comfortable than she knew she should be. “They may not be as big, but I also have my fair share of scars.”

He looked her over, taking in the way the soft light played across her skin and the way the dress clung to her body. His eyes zeroed in on the hint of scars peeking out from the edges of her dress, and his heart lurched. Scars that mirrored his own, scars that held a silent history.

"Show me." He murmured, his hand coming up to cup her face, tilting her chin up towards him. "Let me see them."

At his words, her confidence faulted slightly. While she’d never been insecure about her scars, she was suddenly aware of how vulnerable she had made herself in this moment. Nevertheless, she carefully turned around and allowed him to unzip the back of her dress.

Her breath caught in her throat as she felt his hand reach out and slowly pull the zip down, revealing her scarred back to him. Across her back were several long, jagged lines of scarring; the lighter colour made them stand out against her skin in the low light.

“I got caught during an undercover; their favourite method of torture was whipping.” She explained quietly as she felt his hands softly trace across her back.

“Beautiful,” Lyutsifer muttered before leaning forward and placing a small kiss in the centre of her spine, causing her to let out a soft, breathy moan. Wrapping his arm around her, he pulled her closer, and he continued to trail kisses upwards to her neck.

“Please.” She breathed out, but she had no idea what she was asking for, having to place a hand on the wall in front of her to steady herself.

He chuckled against her skin, "Please what, Dragotsennyy?" He asked in a whisper. "Use your words."

“I don’t know.” Her mind was racing, but all she could focus on was the feelings of him kissing and breathing on her back.

"You're thinking too much, darling." He murmured against her skin, his lips moving up to her ear, his tone commanding.

Y/N pulled away and slowly turned to face him, her back now pressed against the wall. “It’s hard not to.”

"You have a habit of overthinking, don't you?" he commented, a hint of humour in his voice.

He smirked as he moved his hand from her waist and slid through the slit in her dress, gently massaging her inner thigh. Y/N gasped at his sudden action, arching her back slightly and pressing her chest against his.

After shaking herself slightly, she replied, “Someone has to.”

"You're too independent," he murmured, his hand continuing to knead her thigh. "Too focused on control. You need to let go, sometimes."

Before she could respond, Lyutsifer moved his hand from her thigh and simply grazed Y/N’s core through her underwear. She responded with a loud moan, “Fuck, Lyutisifer.”

He leaned in closer, his lips brushing against her ear. "Language, dragotsennyy." He whispered, his fingers still rubbing against her.

All the young agent could do was whimper in response, her eyes closed as she began to gently grind against his fingers. He chuckled again, feeling her writhe and grind against his fingers, her whimper echoing in the air. Her reaction was exactly what he wanted—a beautiful, desperate need for more.

He brought his other hand to her face, tilting it, forcing her to look up at him. His gaze captured her, intense and unwavering.

"Open your eyes, Dragotsennyy," he commanded. "Look me in the eye."

She opened her eyes and gazed into his crystal eyes before almost squeezing them shut when Lyutsifer took the opportunity to slide her underwear aside and immediately circle her clit.

He leaned in closer, his lips practically touching her ear as he whispered, "Don't close your eyes; look at me." His fingers continued their slow, deliberate movements against her.

As his stroking continued, Y/N obediently kept her eyes connected with his stare. Only fluttering slightly as she whined and moaned from his touch.

A small, satisfied smile tugged at the corners of his lips as she kept her eyes on his. He loved watching her in this state, completely at his mercy, completely under his control.

His fingers continued their slow, deliberate rhythm, drawing out her moans and whines, his eyes never leaving her face. He wanted to see every reaction, every expression, and every moment that flitted across her face.

"Look at you," he murmured. "So responsive, so beautiful."

After he spoke, Lyutsifer gently pushed his index finger forward and into her soaking entrance. Unable to control her body, a sudden electric sensation spread through and caused her to arch her back, eyes rolling back slightly, eyes fluttering shut.

“No, no, Dragotsennyy," he chided softly, his fingers continuing their slow, deliberate rhythm. "Eyes on me. Open them." His tone was firm, commanding control.

“I can’t,” she choked out, hands moving to grip his neck. “It’s too much.”

He smirked, loving the way she gripped his neck, needing something to hold onto. He could see the pleasure written all over her face and could hear it in her voice. She was on the edge, about to fall.

"Yes, you can." He countered, his tone firm. His fingers continued to move, but he slowed just slightly, wanting to prolong the moment, the edge of sweet release just out of reach.

"Look at me." He repeated, his voice low, commanding.

Her eyes flew open at his command, ever the obedient. She pulled his face closer so their foreheads touched, still looking deep into his eyes and moaning loudly as she reached her peak,  almost shrieking in ecstasy.

Her scream of ecstasy echoed through the room, her body trembling with the intensity of her climax. He held her close, their foreheads touching, his fingers still moving but far more slowly, bringing her back down gently.

He watched her, captivated by the sight of her, by the raw, unguarded pleasure on her face, by the way her eyes stayed on his, even as she rode out the wave of her release.

He pulled her close as her body finally relaxed, whispering against her cheek, "Beautiful. You're so beautiful like this."

Still coming down from her high, she didn’t speak. Instead, she lent forward and gently kissed him before resting her head on his shoulder as she caught her breath.

She was breathless, her breaths still coming in gasps as she leaned against him, her head resting on his shoulder. He gently held her, his hand rubbing small circles on her back, feeling the slight tremors still running through her body.

"You did so well, Dragotsennyy," he murmured against her ear. "You were so good, so responsive."

As he spoke, his hand trailed down her back before carefully zipping her dress back up, causing shivers to spread through Y/N’s body again. She leant further against him in exhaustion.

“We shouldn’t have done that.” She said, her voice hoarse, and nothing more than a whisper.

He laughed softly, her words a weak, weary protest against what they had just done. He had seen the way she responded to his touch, the way she lost herself in ecstasy, the way her body trembled in pleasure.

"You enjoyed it," he responded. "Don't pretend otherwise."

“That’s the problem,” the young agent answered as she pulled herself upwards in an attempt to move away. “It can’t happen again if anyone finds out...”

Before she could finish, Lyutsifer grabbed her cheek, making her face him. “Then I could claim you as my own; no one would get in my way.”

It was a firm declaration, a possessive gesture that spoke volumes. He was claiming her in more ways than one. His eyes locked onto hers, unflinching, as he continued to hold her gaze.

Suddenly the door opened to the room they had hidden away in, and a mysterious man in a suit appeared. He didn’t seem surprised by what he found and instead looked directly at Lyutsifer and said, "Dr. Safin sir, we have a problem.”

"A problem?" he enquired, his expression turning serious at the man's words. He released his grip on Y/N, turning fully to face the newcomer. "What kind of problem?"

The newcomer glanced at Y/N in slight caution before turning back to his boss, “I think it’d be best to discuss in private.”

“It’s fine I was just leaving.” She spoke up as she pulled herself away and moved towards the door.

"Wait," he said, his tone firm. He watched as she hesitated, her hand on the door handle, then turned back to him, "We're not quite done here."

“I’m sorry, but I think we are.” With that, she turned the handle and swiftly left the room.

Footsteps echoed as she excited the room and quickly walked down the corridor to the main entrance, afraid she was being followed. When she left the building, she quickly found a taxi to take her home.

It was almost cruel how similar this was to that night all those months ago. She allowed him to get to close again, and she had run. And yet, despite how much danger she had already put herself in, all she wanted to do was run back inside.

Return to Masterlist | Next Chapter Chapter 1. The Tanakas

In all the time since the Cullens had moved to Forks, Mitsuko Tanaka had probably spoken to them once. Even when Bella Swan had moved into town and had somehow quickly become entangled with them, Mitsuko still only ever saw them in passing.

If it wasn’t for a friend’s severe mental state, she probably wouldn’t have noticed when the Cullens left a few months ago. She’d tried to be there for Bella, often appearing at her house with various baked goods, but her friend remained unresponsive. Instead, she began to help Charlie around the house since Bella was unable to help in her condition.

This continued for nearly half the school year, Mitsuko’s worry never lessening even after Bella rejoined the group’s table. Then suddenly one day she’d arrived at school to discover that the Cullens had suddenly reappeared, their table occupied once more.

She’d asked Bella what had happened, but her friend simply excused that The Cullens had simply missed their friends too much. ‘What friends?’ She remembers thinking. The only people the Cullens interacted with was Bella, and that was mainly because she was dating Edward.

Yet, despite the mysterious disappearance and reappearance of the Cullens, the strangest thing Mitsuko experienced was that Edward would now follow Bella to their group's table at lunch. Mitsuko had never even had a single conversation with this guy, and now he was suddenly sitting with them at lunch. Additionally, even then he never really spoke to her; he simply held Bella’s hand and would listen to the rest of the group interact.

She tried to ignore her overthinking and focus on her studies; graduation was coming up, and she wanted to be prepared for college and enjoy her time with her friends before some moved away.

Mitsuko had grabbed her lunch bag from her locker before going to the cafeteria and sitting down at her usual table. She uttered a ‘Hi’ to Bella and her boyfriend, who was already sitting down, before joining in with the lively conversation.

"Jess, are you still worried about your speech?” She’d asked her friend, and she scribbled away on a notepad.

“I just don’t want it to be a stereotypical graduation speech, ya know?”

“You’re getting too stressed about it, here." Mike spoke before stealing the notepad from the girl, “My fellow students. Cool. Right? We are the future. Anything is possible, if you just believe.”

Both Mitsuko and Angela laughed at his antics, with Angela adding a sarcastic “Nice” between her laughter. Ignoring the two, he continued, “Blah, blah, blah, and you got yourself a speech.”

He passed the notepad back to Jess, who ripped the bag out before speaking, “No, this will be my speech. When I want everyone to throw diplomas at my head. So, thank you.” As she spoke, she crumpled the piece of paper and threw it back at Mike’s face.

He ignored the paper and smiled smugly before replying, “Ya gotta embrace the cliches, Jess.”

“They have the bread and butter of all valedictorians,” Eric chimed in from next to Angela, causing her to also chime into the conversation. “And that is why you are not valedictorian.”

“Give the guy a break, Ang,” her boyfriend Ben spoke up, his arms wrapping around her shoulder.

“And Jess doesn't need clichés. Speech is gonna be epic.” Bella spoke up, smirking at the boys, earning a proud smile from Jess.

“Epic? It'll change lives.” She stated confidently.

“I’m sure it’ll change mine." She nudged Jessica as she spoke, earning an appreciative side hug. The group was interrupted from continuing when three other Cullens approached the table and sat down.

Alice and Emilie would occasionally join their group during lunch, mainly so Alice could spend time with Bella. However, Mitsuko found herself getting along with the pixie’s gorgeous girlfriend the more they spoke. Today, Alice had somehow managed to drag Jasper to the table as well, pushing him down into the seat next to Mitsuko.

“I’ve decided to throw a party.” Alice announced brightly as she took her seat.

“After all, how many times are we gonna graduate high school?” Emilie smirked as she spoke, and Mitsuko heard Edward stifle a laugh. Weird.

“A party? At your place?” Angela asked, confused by the sudden invite.

Jessica had immediately perked up at the invitation, “I’ve never seen your house.”

“No one's ever seen their house.” Eric leaned in, replying to Jessica.

“I’ve heard it’s in the woods or something…” Lauren spoke up in mock disgust, but Mitsuko knew she was just as excited as Jessica.

“Another party, Alice?” Edward uttered, seemingly annoyed with his sister, to which Alice insisted, “It'll be fun.”

“Yeah. That's what you said last time.” Bella spoke, agreeing with her boyfriend’s hesitation.

“I think it’ll be fun…” She began to encourage when she noticed Alice start to zone out, probably upset at the less than enthusiastic reaction, but trailed off when she noticed Jasper stiffen next to her. “Hey, you okay?”

Surprised at the sudden question, the blonde turned towards her.  "Apologies, just had a sudden thought.”

“Oh yeah, I get those too; don’t worry.” Mitsuko comforted, unconsciously patting his arm in comfort. He stiffed again, and she was going to apologise until a feeling of dread washed over her. “Hey Angie, could you pass me my clear bag?”

Her friend furrowed her brows in confusion but still pushed the clear bag towards her. Mitsuko quickly unzipped it to pull out a strip of tablets. Before she could take her tablet though, a loud pained scream blared into her head, causing her to jump slightly and cover her ears.

"Suki, are you okay?” Katie whispered to her gently to avoid too much attention, “Did you miss your dosage this morning?”

Her close friends were the only ones aware that she took medicine due to her auditory hallucinations. She’d had from the age of fifteen, just before the Cullens had moved to Forks. Her mother had consulted with several doctors who had all come to the conclusion that while it wasn’t schizophrenia, they didn’t have any other diagnosis; she’d been on a prescription ever since.

The scream was continuous and getting louder, joined by various other screams making Mitsuko press her hands into her ears harder. Her head was pounding from the noise, and she was completely unaware of what was happening around; expect for a single comforting hand on her back rubbing her in circles. She tried to focus on the motion of the hand, forcing the screaming to quieten, allowing her to remove her hands and lift her head back up to face a table of concerned faces.

“I’m sorry guys, I don’t know what happened." She said quietly, still recovering from her small episode.

“It’s okay, we’re just worried about you, is all. Maybe you should go home and have some rest?” Angela suggested gently.

Mitsuko nodded in agreement and gathered her things, and as she stood, the hand finally moved from her back, and she realised who it belonged to. Jasper Hale had been the one gently rubbing her back; he was the hand that had grounded her. ‘Don’t overthink it; he’s just being nice,’ she chastised herself mentally before her mind could reel.

As she was walking through the cafeteria, she spotted her younger sister, Hoshiko, sitting with her own group of friends. She figured she should tell her sister rather than letting her worry, plus she was her ride home. “Hoshi!” She called to her sister, getting her attention.

“Suki, are you okay?” She asked as Mitsuko got closer. Hoshiko was aware of her older sister’s mental health and hallucination issues, but Mitsuko had made sure it didn’t affect her life too much. As the older sister, she felt her sister should always come first and had also instructed her mom as such, even when they were only a year and two months apart.

Mitsuko waved her sister off before reassuring her, “I’m okay, but I am going home early today, so could Rory give you a ride today?”

"Yeah, that’s fine." Hoshiko nodded in understanding, “Just message when you get home, okay?”

“Of course.” She then placed a soft kiss on her sister's head before heading to the nurse office. After she got the okay from the nurse, not that she really needed one, Mitsuko left the building and began walking to her car. It was a little white Mini Cooper; she was lucky enough to find one she could afford that was still in pretty good condition. She opened the doors and tossed her pink shoulder bag onto the pink leathered back seats, which she had done over the summer.

She tried to ignore the leftover feeling of dread from her episode and listened to the music on her custom CD on the way home. It was luckily a very relaxing car journey. Lucky because as she pulled in to her house, she noticed a police car waiting outside.

Concerned, Mitsuko scrambled to grab her and things and got out of the car. As she stepped into the house, she was greeted by Charlie and her mom sitting down in the living room, pausing in their conversation when the door audibly latched.

“I um had an episode today,” she said meekly, explaining her early arrival home. “What’s going on?”

“What don’t you sit down?” The police chief offered as her mom shuffled on the couch to give her daughter room to sit. Cautiously, she walked to the couch and gently sat down, preparing herself for the obviously bad news. “It’s Riley Biers; he’s gone missing.”

As Charlie spoke, Mitsuko felt the felling of dread return. She let out a small gasp in disbelief. “He’s studying at UW; he should be in Seattle.”

“Nobody’s seen him since last November,” he replied grimly. “Have you heard from him at all?”

“We haven’t really talked since he moved; he said that he’d been too busy with his friends.” She answered, rubbing her lips together while trying to stop the tears. “Why are you only telling us now?”

“His parents were mainly talking to the Seattle police, but they’ve just closed the case." He explained, his voice measured and calm, “So they’ve contacted me, and Forks PD are going to take the case.”

Mitsuko nodded in understanding, but her mind began to buzz, overwhelmed with her emotions. Her mom pulled into a hug, and she finally broke down as a sob escaped her lips. They stayed there for a few minutes, Charlie wanting to let her calm down before he left.

“I’m sorry, kid; let me know if you need anything.” He said to her a final time before heading out the door. Still buried in her mom’s tight embrace, she barely lifted her head to nod before burying her face again when she heard the click of the lock.

“I’m so sorry, Mitsuko.” Her mother whispered softly to her, pulling away. She allowed her mom to gently wipe her tears away. “How about to get some rest and make you some tea, okay?”

She nodded as much as she could with her face cupped in mom’s hands. Her mom stood and made her way to the kitchen to get everything ready. Mitsuko made the decision to get off the couch and make her way upstairs to her room; she pulled back her covers before lying down. Under the comfort of her bed, she felt her eyes grow heavy; the day had clearly taken its toll on her.

So tired, she fell into a deep sleep, only awoken when she felt some pull back the covers again and crawl into the bed next to her. She opened her eyes to come face to face with her younger sister’s concerned face. “I guess mom told you what happened?”

“Yeah…” Hoshiko whispered back, “I just can’t believe it.”

She nodded before reaching out and pulling her sister into a tight hug. The sisters had always been close to Riley, having been his neighbours since they moved to forks at the ages of ten and nine, respectively. While Riley had drifted from them as he grew up, he still contacted them every now and then, always making the same joke about how they were only a year away from being twins. Neither of them would get that message again.

Yet as they held each other close, their pain washed away. While the world was harsh, the Tanaka sisters would always have each other.

Chapter 5. Minor Complications

Mitsuko had been in the hospital for three more days before Dr. Cullen finally came in with the good news: she was going home.

Yet when Charlie walked through the door to collect her instead of her mom, her relief quickly turned into an uncertain sense of fear. As they walked down the hallway together, several nurses stopped what they were doing and looked at her in sympathy.

Surely nurses would look more relieved than sympathetic when a patient has been deemed healthy enough to leave? At least that's what Mitsuko thought.

It was worse when she got home. Her mom was home; her car was in the driveway, which meant she could've come to get her, but for some reason she didn't.

Charlie guided her into her house and straight into the living room, where her mother was sitting, but she wasn't alone. In the room, sitting on the opposite couch from where her mom was sitting, were two other officers. One of them had a notebook open with several lines of writing on its pages, but Mitsuko was too far away to see clearly what it said.

Her steps slowed until she halted just at the entryway of the living room; she looked around cautiously as she spoke, "What's going on?"

As she spoke, all heads moved to where she was standing; Charlie moved past her before turning back to her with a strange expression on his face, "Why don't you take a seat, kid?"

"No," she refused. "Just tell me what's going on!"

It was at this moment her mom stood and took a step towards her: "It's Hoshi."

The pit in her stomach grew. "What about Hoshi?"

"She left three days ago, said she was having a sleepover," her mom explained, choking up slightly as she spoke, "but she hasn't come home, and the girl she said she was staying with hasn't seen Hoshi since Monday last week."

The room grew silent as they awaited Mitsuko's reaction to the news, but she found herself frozen, unable to speak or even move her face. Concerned, her mom stepped forward and grabbed onto her arm, shaking her slightly to get her attention. "Miko, honey, do you understand what I told you?"

She shook herself slightly before finally responding, "Hoshi's gone missing?"

"I'm afraid so, kid," Charlie chimed in. "We've got officers canvassing the area, and we're also in touch with Seattle police in case she's ended up there."

Seattle. Of course.

At the mention of the city, Mitsuko's eyes shined with recognition. She thought back to the conversation she had those three days ago in the hospital room. Hoshi had promised she wouldn't do anything without her sister, but Mitsuko had forgotten how stubborn her little sister could be.

All she could do in that moment was slowly nod her head before speaking with a slight tremble, "I'm... going to head to my room."

She began walking away, only turning around when her mom called after her, "I just need some time to process... this."

Turning back around, she climbed the stairs and made her way into her room. Where she stayed for nearly two full days. After the second day, Angela and Jess had come to visit her, having heard the news and wanting to check on her.

Instead of seeing the usual smiling face, the two were greeted by the sight of Mitsuko staring intently at a map of Seattle she'd pulled up on her computer.

"Suki?" Angela had called in an attempt to get her attention, "Everyone's really worried about you; your mom says you haven't come out in two days."

When that didn't get a response, Jessica sighed and stomped over and yanked the computer's power cord from the wall. "Seriously, Suki, this isn't going to help anyone!"

That seemed to have gotten a reaction from Mitsuko, who twisted her head to face her friends with a dark expression.

"What do you want me to do, Jess?" Her eyes quickly filling with tears as her face crumbled. "I can't act like nothing has happened; she's gone!"

"We're not asking you to do that!" Jess argued back, "But we both know Hoshi wouldn't want you torturing yourself over trying to find her."

"I'm just so afraid she'll end up like..." She couldn't finish that sentence, but it was clear her friends understood at least to some degree. Yet they'd never understand just how much she didn't want Riley and Hoshiko to share the same fate.

"You shouldn't think like that." Jess chastised her again, "The investigation is still ongoing; for all we know, she's run off to watch one of those bands she likes so much on tour."

It was so like Jess to think that way; there was always a best-case scenario that she would remind people of. Maybe it was because she hadn't experienced much hardship, or maybe that was the only way Jess knew how to comfort her friends.

"Maybe you're right," Mitusko finally admitted, "I just can't stand the thought of her being alone and hurt somewhere."

Angela stepped forward again, pulling her friend into a tight hug. "We know, but we, as your friends, have a responsibility to make sure you're okay."

All she could do was nod before burying her face into her friend's shoulder. They stayed like that for a few minutes, with Jess eventually joining in and making it a group hug. After a while they pulled away, and Angela gently reached out to wipe away her friend's tears.

"How about we have a nice night in and watch a cheesy chick flick?" She suggested, to which Mitsuko smiled softly and nodded.

The three of them spent the night curled up on Mitsuko's bed as Legally Blonde played on the small TV in her room. When the movie had finished, it was already dark, so Angela and Jess bid their friend goodbye and left.

With her friends gone, the silence became suffocating once again, but the presence of her friends had helped heal at least a little bit of the damage in Mitsuko's heart.

She'd finally crawled out of bed to have a quick shower, groan in pleasure from finally feeling clean again. With her hair still wet, she'd then thrown her pyjamas on and shuffled back under the covers. After only a few minutes, she felt herself drifting off in a deep slumber.

Knock knock knock

Mitsuko's eyes flew open at the sound of the furious banging against her bedroom window. Disoriented, she glanced at the clock on her bedside table to see it read 3:46 am.

Thinking it was just the branches of the tree outside hitting against the glass, she simply pulled the cover over her tighter and closed her eyes. Thankfully she was tired enough that it didn't take long for her to begin drifting again.

Knock knock knock

The banging continued, but it seemed to be getting louder and more frequent. This time she sat up and reached over to flick on her bedside lamp. It took a few moments for her eyes to adjust before she could stand and slowly approach her window. It was too dark for her to see what was outside, so all she could do was unlatch it and swing it open.

The moment she did, she was almost knocked to the ground when a large body jumped in through the now open window. Before she could shout in alarm, a cold hand covered a mouth, followed by a harsh hiss.

"Shhh," The voice whispered, "It's me, Suki. It's just me."

Her eyes focused on the face in front of her, and her breath hitched in surprise. She tried to speak but was muffled under the hand on her mouth. "Hoshi?"

"If I move my hand away, you're not going to scream, are you?" Her sister asked, to which all she could do was nod.

The hand was slowly removed from her mouth as Hoshiko took a step away, keeping what she deemed a safe distance from her older sister. The distance also allowed Mitsuko to fully take in her sister's appearance.

Although she looked similar to how she did only a few days ago, she was also somehow completely unrecognisable. Yet the thing that stuck out the most, the thing that made the pit settle back in Mitsuko's stomach, was her eyes. The once dark brown, almost pitch black, was gone, replaced by a startling crimson red. Just like Riley's.

"What happened to you?" Was all she could say, breaking the silence that had fallen between them.

"I don't know..." Hoshiko muttered, even her voice was different, "It's all just like a blur; one moment I'm talking to you in the hospital, and the next I'm... burning."

She bit her lip from her nerves before speaking again, "Hoshi, your eyes are..."

"I know..." her sister spoke, "I saw them in a mirror, not long after I woke up."

The expression of absolute confusion and defeat on her sister's face made Mitsuko's heart ache once more. Without thinking, she took several rapid steps forward before pulling her little sister into her arms.

"Fuck..." She couldn't help but cry out when the rock-hard body slammed into her, "Sorry, you're like a boulder."

"Yeah, sorry about that." Her sister rested her head on her shoulder but kept her hands at her side, not trusting her newfound strength. "Turns out I'm like super strong or something now."

Mitsuko pulled back from the hug to look at her sister once more. "How did you even get back here?"

"I ran." Was all Hoshiko willing to say at the moment, "I think I have super speed too."

"Are you saying you've turned into some kind of superhero or something?"

"I think mutant might be a more accurate description." Hoshiko joked, a small smile on her face.

"Shit." The oldest said, looking down with a stressed expression, her hands going to rest on her hips.

"Yeah, I know." She sighed, running her hand through her hair. "But I think with some practice, I can learn to control it.

Instead of agreeing, Mitsuko shook her head before speaking again, "No, I mean how are we gonna tell Mom about this?"

Pause.

"Shit."
