Wiping away the tears that managed to spill down your cheeks, the sniffles not having subsided just yet.

You couldn’t stand confrontation, especially when it came to one of your loved ones. Voicing your opinion only pushed the matter to become worse, and the envelope ripped open to reveal anger, hurt, and demise. Words were exchanged and as someone who experienced bouts of anxiety; it was detrimental.

Having no real destination planned in mind, you found your way down the streets of New York, aimlessly searching. The rain was in a light drizzle, thunderstorm clouds gathering overhead for an enraged downpour. You just hoped you made it to wherever you were going without getting completely soaked.

Grasping the fabric of your t-shirt, you could feel your heart pounding violently in your chest. Squeezing your eyes shut, your hands shook as you tried to work your way through breathing.

If you could just steady yourself long enough, you’d be okay. But when a loud crash of thunder sounded overhead, it made you yelp and begin racing faster down the length of the sidewalk.

Gazing to your left, the solid black front door caught your attention, the familiar home seeming too inviting.

Loki.

Cutting over the lawn and pressing your sneaker-covered feet on the steps to the small wrap-around porch, your eyes were met with the gold-embellished doorbell. Inhaling sharply, a streak of lightning illuminated the sky and pushed you onward to ringing the bell.

“Please wake up, please wake up…” You trailed softly under your breath, tears still bubbling in your eyes. You glanced up to the second floor to the flicker of light break through the curtains of the bedroom. Breathing out a small sigh of relief, it wasn’t long before the door was being pulled open.

“Darling?” Loki’s sultry voice called out to you. He saw the ends of your hair dripping with water and without hesitation, he reached forward and pulled you inside.

Closing the door, his blue orbs cast into yours and he quickly saw the look of fear present in your eyes. He was able to pick up on your moods with ease.

“What happened?” Loki questioned, already taking your hand and leading you up the staircase toward his bedroom. You remained quiet, unsure of what to say.

“It’s nothing…. It’s stupid, really. I got into a fight with one of my family members. It’s okay, we just exchanged words, but… You know how I am.” You said sheepishly, a few tears streaming down your face. Loki had led you into the comfort of his bedroom where he soon was helping you change out of your dampened clothes. As he pulled one of his larger shirts over your frame, a loud crash of thunder sounded, causing you to jump closer to his chest.

Loki wrapped his arms protectively around you. “It’s okay,” He said, planting his lips to your forehead. “But why were you out there tonight, Darling?” He questioned.

You shook your head. “I couldn’t bear to go home and be alone… I was hoping maybe I could stay here for the night.” You breathed out uneasily.

Loki’s eyes pooled into yours. “Love, my home is yours. Of course, you can stay here. I just want you to be okay and feel safe.” He whispered. He could feel your body shaking against his, seeing as your breaths came in labored pants. Quickly, he took your hands into his.

“Hey, look at me,” Loki softly spoke. Your eyes lifted to meet his and Loki held your gaze intensely. “Deep breaths, okay? You’re going to run yourself into another panic attack if you aren’t careful… Focus on me, Love. I’m right here.” He encouraged you to take big breaths. Soon, you were following his breathing pattern and a wave of calm slowly began to flood over you.

Loki led you beneath the blankets. He removed his shirt for the second time tonight and tossed it over the chair by his reading nook. Wrapping his arm around you, he kissed your temple and felt as you curled into him.

His grip on you relaxed as you rolled onto his chest. Burying your nose into the crook of his neck, Loki began to draw circles into your back. You smiled gently, your lover nuzzling closer into you.

Pretty soon, you had drifted off into a peaceful sleep. Loki’s arms were secured around you as he planted one more gentle kiss to the top of your head, whispering a sweet ‘goodnight’ into your ear before turning off the light and giving in to his own rest.

Ready to Comply: The Google Translate Soldier

Who here doesn’t like some good old Winter Soldier angst? Raise your hands. Now leave, this post is not for you.

Just kidding. Stay if you want. But be warned: it may get a teeny bit angsty.

Okay, so, we all know The Phrase. We’ve had this phrase destroy our souls again and again, in the canon, in fanfiction, in our unruly daydreams about the beauty and tragedy of a certain brainwashed supersoldier.

Oh god. The feels. But on we go.

I want desperately to use this phrase in my fics for obvious angst purposes, but here’s the thing: I’m a native Russian speaker and a professional translator, and the Russian version of the phrase from the movie is cutting my heart into tiny miserable pieces every time I think about it. (Which is, admittedly, A LOT.)

So, what is wrong with it?

In Captain America: Civil War, we hear Bucky say in an accent heavier than his metal arm, “я готов отвечать” [“ya gotov otvechat’”], after being put into the mindless killer machine mode by a bunch of horribly mangled Russian words and phrases. According to the subtitles, it means “ready to comply.”

Except that it doesn’t. The Russian verb “отвечать” [“otvechat’”] has a range of meanings, from “to reply” to “to account for” and so on. The only context in which it can correspond to the English verb “to comply” is when talking about a gas pipe complying with safety requirements or a rant post complying with Tumblr community guidelines.

So, “я готов отвечать” can mean something like “I’m ready to answer [your questions]” or “I’m ready to assume responsibility [for something],” turning the scene into some kind of an interrogation or an investigation, while we all know that it’s neither.

There’s another version, straight from our dear Google Translate.

(I love Google Translate so much. It always proves that the need for human translators will never cease.)

What’s wrong with this one? Well, “я готов подчиниться” [“ya gotov podchinit’sya”] is much better in terms of word choice. The Russian verb “подчиниться” [“podchinit’sya”] does, indeed, mean “to obey, to submit, to surrender” and so on. The problem is with the verb form.

Verbs in Russian have two aspects: the perfective aspect, which indicates a one-time action, and the imperfective aspect, which points to a more ongoing kind of thing. Unaware of the context, Google Translate uses the perfective aspect, which turns the phrase into “I’m ready to comply, but only just this once, don’t bother me after that.”

The proper form would be “подчиняться” [“podchinyat’sya”] instead of “подчиниться” [“podchinit’sya”] (yes, it’s a one letter difference, but see how huge it is?). The whole phrase would then be “я готов подчиняться” [“ya gotov podchinyat’sya”], which might even pass for an adequate translation.

But there’s one more thing.

The English phrase doesn’t have a first-person pronoun. In fact, it doesn’t have any pronoun at all. It doesn’t indicate the speaker in any way, because the one saying it isn’t supposed to be a person. The ‘who’ here isn’t important. What is important, is that whoever (or whatever) it is, is ready.

Here, have a tissue.

The Russian phrase, however, begins with “Я” [“Ya”], which means, unsurprisingly, “I” and is not syntactically mandatory in this case. Just like in English.

Moreover, it doesn’t figure much in standard military expressions. Why waste precious army time on such meaningless things as personal pronouns? Again, there are no persons here. Only soldiers.

My personal favorite for rendering “ready to comply” in Russian is “готов служить” [“gotov sluzhit’”], which means “ready to serve” as in “to serve one’s country.” Or one’s captors. Take your pick.

Oh wait, you’re not allowed to choose. Sorry.

The pros for this version are: it’s a standard phrase that indicates one’s willingness to obey and submit and is primarily used in the military context. Moreover, it’s a standard Russian phrase, and seeing Bucky utter it like some common Soviet private would be so much more heartbreaking. (Yes, even more.)

The cons are: it’s a standard phrase. As far as I understand, “ready to comply” isn’t standard military lingo, so maybe the Russian version should reflect that as well. Or maybe I’m overthinking it.

In conclusion? Marvel couldn’t splurge on an actual Russian speaker to proofread a couple of sentences, and now I’m forever torn between wanting a phrase that sounds like idiomatic Russian instead of machine translation and wanting to make a recognizable fandom reference.

Peter would absolutely stand behind you and massage your shoulders and neck while you work. Those big hands and long fingers are wonderful at unclenching your muscles. 

He would show up with a backpack full of treats. Your favorite snacks and drinks piled in there. If you ran out, he would find the nearest vending machine and empty it out for you if you asked. He does the coffee runs and brings you lunch/dinner when it’s time. 

Constantly making sure you’re hydrated and trying to force feed you water when you get too in the zone. 

If he could do anything to help like taking notes, making flashcards, or helping you research anything he’ll jump at the opportunity. 

Every few hours he makes you get up, stretch, and walk around the block with him. He says that sitting hunched over for that long is not good and you need the fresh air. You complain about it but he’s always right. You’re always more focused after a quick walk outside and come back with a new determination. 

He’ll quiz you with flash cards and makes up dumb, little games for you. (like you get a kiss if you get something correct)

Sometimes he’s more a distraction then a help. His attention span isn’t the best. He’ll get fidgety and start drumming pencils on the table or bouncing his leg, something that is done repetitive enough that it starts to get under your skin. He might get bored and start playing with the ends of your hair or trying to hold your hand while your in the middle of the something important. During those moments all you have to do is shoot him a death glare and he’ll get the hint, opting to go on another coffee run or take a bathroom break to give you some quiet. 

He’s the best at pep talks though. Peter obviously thinks the world of you so he’s great at hyping you up. “What do you mean you can’t do it? You’re the smartest person I’ve ever met in my entire life! You a gift to this world and everything you have to offer is nothing less than magic.” His hyperbole and enthusiasm make you roll your eyes but, secretly, it makes you feel a little more confident in yourself. 

If you ever break down from too much stress, he’ll jump up and pull you into his arms for a hug. He’ll rub his hands over your back and snuggle his face into the top of your head. He whispers sweet things in your ear until you start to calm down. Then he forces you to take another break. This time taking you with him to the 7-Eleven and having you restock the snacks. You guys will share a Slurpee on the walk back (even though Peter ends up drinking most of it, you knew you should have just gotten two). 

When you start to doze off and lay your head down on the table, Peter unzips his sweatshirt and draped it over you. He gently steals the books from under you and continues taking notes from where you left off. 

And lastly, when everything is over, he will reward your hard work with a lot of this: 

It kills me how Tumblr will see the most broken, traumatized, impossible to talk to, emotionally unavailable dark haired person and be like: "yes this is the person I'll fall in love with"

And then proceed to write fanfics, fanart, headcannons to the point where it trends every two weeks or so
