In 1992, Opel South Africa entered the highly competitive WesBank Modifieds series with a heavily reworked Opel Calibra, driven by Mike Briggs.
Unlike the road-going Calibra, this version was a purpose-built race car, featuring a 3.5L turbocharged V6 engine developed by Ryan Falconer in the USA. Producing around 600bhp, the car was equipped with a Hewland transaxle, carbon-fiber prop shaft, and space frame chassis (the regulations were fairly open).
With Briggs behind the wheel, the Calibra was competitive but off the pace of the eventual BMW champion. This was just the start for Briggs who would go on to win the South African touring car championship in ‘93 and ‘95 with Opel. Pete
