170: “Armadillo” G.I. Joe “Real American Hero” Series 7, 1988
Phew! This is the first vehicle drawing for the 1988 series and WOW what doozy. This vehicle is so epic it could possibly be considered a play set in the same vein as the Mobile Command Center. This vehicle is so big it comes with an additional TINY vehicle. This thing is over 3 feet long and comes with what I would guess are the two largest rockets ever released with a G.I. Joe toy set?
The sad part to me I guess is that the vehicle far outshines the driver “Armadillo” that comes with the Rolling Thunder. If I’m being honest, I find that to be the case with a vast majority of figures that come with a vehicle.
This vehicle art took a long time to complete. I decided to up the ante a bit for the context I put the vehicle in, and create a dynamic background. I brought some of my other art styles to the mix, doing a bit more of a “painterly” style to the background, particularly with the clouds. I wanted to have some purples and oranges in the sky to compliment the green of the Rolling Thunder itself.
Like I said, I know it took an epically long time to get this out but thanks for sticking with me and I hope you enjoy the final result!
