Each fall, millions of monarch butterflies migrate to California and Mexico for winter. North American monarchs are the only butterflies that make such a massive journey (up to 4,830 kilometers/3,000 miles). They use the sun to ensure that they stay on course and on cloudy days Earth’s magnetic field as a kind of backup navigational system. (read more here)
Just as a heads up, this pattern is not really recommended for beginners. There is not a whole lot of explanation of the basic techniques, and it requires a fair bit of precision, two types of fusible interfacing, and an assumption that you can keep a consistent seam allowance and do some hand sewing and know when to sew things right sides together and such.
I am not promising anything, different methods will yield different results, I have never made a pattern exactly as it was written and neither should you. If you want something the same as the next person, go to the shops.

Why? Bookbinding let’s you stitch your stories together. Like papermaking, bookbinding has a long history of being an excellent resource for recording thoughts. To bind a book you simply need to attach pages together. Stitching techniques can be as decorative as you’d like, or as simple as a staple. Binding your own book means you can bind your own sketchbook, and no artist should be without a sketchbook.
What else? Bookbinding gets us thinking about the sequence of things – the cover, the beginning, the middle, and the end of the book. Construct your own narrative of a real (or imagined!) event by writing, illustrating, and binding your story. More curriculum connectors can be found here.
