- Jeanette Winterson, Lighthousekeeping
Apparently my director went to see a production of West Side Story a few years ago, and the guy playing Chino forgot his gun before coming out for his final scene. Once it got to the big scene where he is supposed to shoot Tony, he screeched “Poison Boots” and kicked the actor playing Tony until he went down. The girl playing Maria then had to jerk the shoe off of Chino’s foot, and had to do the gunshot scene asking “How many kicks Chino? How many kicks, and one kick left for me”.
Khun's absence was not easy. Bam's gaze would return to the empty seat beside him each time, the one stubbornly reserved for his sleeping best friend. It was force of habit by then. He would try to imagine what Khun would look like seated there, remember his voice and face and sly demeanor, the memory eventually becoming a blurred spectre of blue staring him in the eye and plunging a knife through his chest.
Soon he'd forgotten what Khun sounded like, and then he thought, that's it - he's forgetting him, and there's nothing he can do about it.
He forced himself to look forward, and the seat sat empty in the edges of his vision.
When Khun awoke, returned to him warm and smiling, he drank in his image, sated his longing in the marine of his irises and nearly drowned when his hand rose to brush fingertips across his face -
"Your hair... It's gotten quite long."
Khun didn't need to know it was meant to match his, time spent imagining him in the reflection of mirrors in his place; it's a ridiculous thing to admit –
"Yeah. It's not as long as I'd like it, yet."
"Are you well?"
Bam looked at him. Was he well?
Yeah. Yes. He breathed, one of Khun's colognes wafting pleasant in the air, upending nostalgia into his heart, a breath of winter's air–
"With you here," he responded, unable to stop himself.
Khun smiled. Safe haven found in the curve of his lips, carried in his currents, a return to alright, a shifted axis restored. His veins spring hope anew from where ice silenced its flow, and the future will no longer be something for him to face alone.

Summary: Khun can evade sleep but he can't evade Bam.
Bam folded the bed cover over and smoothed it down. The bed was ready and he just had to retrieve one more thing.
He padded to the living room and some night owls were still watching a movie, but no sign of who he was looking for. The kitchen was cold and empty. The training room was dark and a bit scary looking at night.
Bam pushed the sliding door open and stepped out onto the patio. There is where he found his partner, nodding off in front of his lighthouse, hands still hovering over the keyboard. Bam laughed lightly as he approached him.
“Khun-ssi, come to bed.”
Khun grumbled as rubbed his eyes. “I’m almost done, Bam.”
A startle yelp rung out as Bam scooped Khun out of his seat and made his way inside. There was some poignant sighing, but no complaint as Khun rested his head on Bam’s shoulder.
No one gave them any looks as they passed by the hall to their shared room. It wasn’t the first time, and it certainly wouldn’t be the last.
Bam gently put Khun down on the bed, only to find him already quietly snoring. It took a bit of finagling to get the covers out from under him, but he managed to tuck him in. He went around to his side of the bed and settled in under the covers.
As soon as he shut his eyes, hands were reaching out to him, tugging at his shirt and pulling him to the center of the bed. Bam winced as icy hands slipped under his shirt and pressed against his warm skin, but he didn’t mind when he heard the soft sigh from Khun, who was now hugging him close.
He was cold now, but later in the night, Bam would have to throw the cover off because of Khun’s body heat. He wasn’t sure if it was firefish-related, but he dealt with it nonetheless because he couldn’t bear to push Khun away.
Bam smiled and closed his eyes, sleep coming to him easier now that he was comfortable with his other half.

The routine was manageable on days when the sky cleared to something close to blue.
It was the gray what ifs that were killing him.
