I've never learned to meditate properly, but sometimes when things are frustrating for reasons beyond my control, I'll smoke a mental cigarette. Not menthol, but mental, but it can be menthol too if I want it to be special.

But anyway, when shit gets too much I can just sit down, calmly imagine the feeling of a firm but yielding cigarette filter between the mid- and forefingers of my left hand, feel how the texture of the smooth paper and spongy filter feel against my lips, draw a deep breath and remember the sensation of warm, heavy smoke filling my lungs, and then slowly blow it out, vividly feeling the greasy smell and taste of the smoke as it flows out of my mouth and my nostrils. And then take another drag if I need one, until I'm calm again and ready to go back to what I was doing.

The one cig can last exactly as long as I need it to, be done exactly when I'm done, costs me absolutely nothing and has no negative consequences to my health. I haven't smoked an actual cigarette for years now and don't have cravings of any sort, but every once in a while things just suck ass so bad that I need a fucking cigarette.

It really sucks that structural ableism makes it hard for disabled people to connect in person because let me tell you some of the best advice I’ve ever heard in my life is from disabled people.

It’s nice talking to someone who doesn’t want to fix you just wants to listen and commiserate because yeah things are shitty and it’s not fair

I like to think that during Buck’s first year at the 118, he was enthusiastically taking any shift he could because he loves being a firefighter and his real life is lonely.

Then one day, he comes into work and Bobby is just like, come with me. They get in Bobby’s car and he drops Buck off at his house, “If you keep going like this, you’re going to burn out. Take the time.”

And then a few hours later, the 118 comes back from a call and Buck is in the loft. Making a grilled cheese.

Bobby gives him a look like, what the hell. Buck’s eyes go wide and he asks genuinely, “You meant all day?”

“Since you’re Grammy nominated artists now, I think We all know that’s going to open you up to a lot more people. Any celebrity crushes you’re hoping to meet?”

The guys all shot pointed looks at Eddie, Jeff being the first to say “Eddie has a huge crush on this one NHL goalie.”

Eddie felt his face slide into a pleased grin as he nodded. “Steve Harrington. Toronto Maple Leafs.”

The interviewers eyebrow crooked. “Oh yeah? You a big hockey fan.”

His mouth opened but Gareth beat him to it “No, you don’t understand. He had never watched a full game before this in his whole life. The only things he knows about hockey is what has to do with Steve.”

“Eddie, what’s a breakaway?” Jeff asks

Eddie shrugged. “No clue, dude.” Genuinely having no ideas what that meant.

“How many shutouts did Steve have last season?”

With no hesitation, “Five.”

I love when someone reads an account from someone who experienced severe abuse and says “wow! I have never been abused in my life and I think of abuse survivors as fundamentally Different than me but for some reason I hyperidentify with these feelings of humiliation, despair, and self-disgust, and react the exact same way to authority figures. how odd!” and then you find out what their home life was really like.

It's so funny when a guy in your class starts realizing you're un-fuckable cause the speed he reached while vacating our friendship HAS to be a record.
